At this epoch of Mankind’s evo­lu­tion, where democ­racy and respect for human rights are being immor­tal­ized as indis­pen­si­ble virtues which every soci­ety must pos­sess and are uni­ver­sal yard­sticks by which the actions of gov­ern­ments are mea­sured, it is almost incon­ceiv­able that there are still those who con­tinue to reject the idea of repa­ra­tions for descen­dants of African slaves. Recently, a book on the sub­ject by Pro­fes­sor Sir Hilary McD. Beck­les, pro-​vice chan­cel­lor at the UWI Cave Hill cam­pus a lead­ing activist and eco­nomic his­to­rian was pub­lished. Enti­tled Britain Black Debt: Repa­ra­tions for Caribbean Slav­ery and Native Geno­cide, it sets out a com­pelling case for Repa­ra­tions from Britain which can­not be coun­ter­acted by any of the sophisms and spe­cious rea­sons posited by cyn­i­cal detractors.

    The education i had in my was more aligned with the African civilization and culture, if people actually know where they originated the psychological benefits are known to balance the negatives of beastly experiences re the African Slave Trade, more European fantasy will however continue the programming that is so deeply entrenched and embedded in the majority of Caribbean people. There is African history that most black Caribbean people are not aware of and would be shocked and happily enlightened if only they had access to the information.

    John…………..have you ever heard of DNA registries, these can adequately and accurately pinpoint which tribe in which section of sub-saharan Africa the black people’s of the Caribbean originated, with every argument you bring i can bring four.

    So …… am …… er ……… how exactly do you plan on using DNA to determine if an African is a descendant of a slave?

    Are you saying there is some genetic predisposition to being a slave?

    I know of no scientific work that would back up your apparent belief!!!!!

    Yes, I had meant to address exactly that mitigation of Psychological Trauma that apparently afflicts some Black peeps even today. Surely the Education I have in mind would be developed and designed to Fully Educate ie recount the Horrors of Slavery BUT emphasise real life Case Histories of poor Black peeps preferably starting from just after Emancipation (before too) who were determined to succeed, whether by Tertiary Education (Law/ Medicine etc) leveraging their Technical skills or Entrepreneurial activity. eg in Bim would be London Bourne, Ms Pringle ( gotta tek out the Prostitution angle tho/ just the Bar/ Hotel)

    No amount of research on dna will allow the identification of whether a Black person born in African has an ancestor who was a slave or not.

    Just not possible!!

    He/she may be able to, within certain confidence limits, identify where ancestors may have come from but there is a statistical aspect to the data.

    I know if I provide a sample to one of the various genealogical testing services available I may, with a certain statistical “certainty” be able to say if I share common ancestors with someone in their database.

    Here is what ancestry.com has to say about its results:

    “How accurate is the AncestrybyDNA™ test?

    The AncestrybyDNA™ test provides your ancestral proportions based on years of collaborative research of populations representing 4 ancestral groups. This research identified 176 informative markers in our DNA, called Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs).

    The results typically give you a 95% confidence interval, which is a measure of the statistical strength of the test. The only way to achieve 100% accuracy in an ancestry test would be to go back in time and test each and every one of your ancestors. Since this is impossible, we rely on statistics to make a prediction of your most likely ancestry mix.

    The scientists who developed the Ancestryby™DNA test have conducted extensive validation studies with various numbers of markers to create a test that was economically feasible as well as provides the most robust statistical data. The first version of the test used 71 markers—today we test 176 markers to obtain a much higher confidence level while keeping costs to a minimum. In a validation study that used a simulated 100% European population, for example, the test results showed less than 3.3% of total average contribution from African, Indigenous American, and East Asian ancestry, indicating the level of “statistical noise” that is to be expected from the results.”

    Maybe in a CSI lab it is possible to achieve absolute certainty but only on TV.

    John………you still do not get it, there is still information available on where slaves were transported FROM, in other words, on which coast of AFRICA the slaves were kidnapped, stolen……..it’s just a matter of DNA testing the peoples of these countries in Africa and matching these DNA strands with Caribbean people’s because they are whom the lawsuit is supposed to benefit…….you are making seem like it’s rocket science……..DNA experts don’t always need dead bodies of ancestors to determine the origins of specific species of humans…..

    Moeybrain………i don’t believe the lawsuit regarding reparations was addressed to you, we all know who benefited and still does from the former slave trade…………seeing how much you care about blacks in Barbados, it would be great for you to warn them of the pit falls and dangerous of being re-enslaved, those of us who know realize that the Caribbean is once again very vulnerable to re-enslavement, don’t tell me you can’s see the signs.

    John……………….never discount the proven FACT that black Caribbean people still have the DNA of black Africans who are very much alive in AFRICA running right through their DNA strands……….a DNA registry for black people in the Caribbean only has to be set up with a corresponding registry in AFRICA to achieve and prove without a doubt ancestry and lineage to a specific African tribe who was kidnapped out of Africa by the Europeans, your argument is very weak, cut and paste is not proof. If you are saying you are black, which i doubt, they will find your DNA match in AFRICA.

    A person born in Africa and alive today cannot tell with any certainty whether his/her ancestor was a slave or not using dna!!

    Simple fact of life!!

    A person born in the Caribbean today of African origins can with a high degree of probability tell whether his/her ancestors were slaves.

    However, Africans have been known to travel before and after slavery ….. another simple fact of life!!

    The Moorish occupation of Spain up to 1492 is an example. The Moors mixed with the Spanish. That is one of the reasons many Spanish are of dark complexion.

    Many of the Spanish who colonized the New World first were of African origins!!

    DNA testing of Caribbean people descended from the first Spanish colonists will show them to be of both African and European Origin … and perhaps may other origins for the simple reason that early peoples traveled too …… not necessarily by ship or plane, …. but sometimes on M2!!

    Also, please note that of the 6000 or so slave owners in the 1817 returns in Barbados about 10% were listed as “free negro” or “free mulatto” ….. including our national heroine Sarah “Ann” Gill!!

    Sarah “Ann” Gill’s descendants if any are alive will meet the criteria of “descendants of African slaves” but they will also be described as “descendants of owners of African Slaves” ……. just like me …. and perhaps you too !!!!

    Your dna result may very well mark your ancestors as European ….. and dna results do not lie …. right!!

    @Well Well. I think you are getting sidetracked with John’s highly questionable smoke and mirrors tactics. All a claimant in the Cribbean really needs to do is to prove that he has African blood. It is then clear beyond any shadow of a reasonable doubt that this blood came from slaves. End of. Unlike John, who seems to have a handle on his ancestry, many do not and will likely not find it. For someone who indispudely has African blood to go, as John suggests, to the Department of Archives and research their ancestry, many of which records were lost and destroyed in fires and hurricanes, is patently silly and not necessary. Now, John may thrill to the idea of DNA testing and researching at the Department of Archives may be his idea of an orgasmic hobby, but those of us who are obviously of African descent, no matter to what degree, do not have to prove the point – nd there are many other ways other than DNA to establish this. And I doubt that there is a single court anywhere that would dispute that and demand the evidence that John suggests we waste our time and resources finding.

    The question is simply “Is there a case?” I suspect that there is, but not for governmenta, which are and will be deemed to be “successor governments”, but for individuals as part of a class action. It would require more research on the part of the law firm retained and an estimate of the chances of success. There is BIG bucks in it for the law firm, so researching it without being paid would seem to me to be as tantamout to a capital outlay – like any business selling to the public has to do. Then, through the magic of the Internet and at minimal cost, names and details of defendants can be sent in, either to the Governments as agents, or directly to the law firm. IF the law firm concludes that it has a 70% chance of success. IF the law firm wants the case, let them expend the resources to get it.

    Please, my friend, do not follow John’s track – or even waste your time bothering to comment on them.

However, I was willing to pay for great schooling, excellent books, and other meaningful matters.

    What Bim must secure is FOOD/ Produce. Why does the Govt not develop a proper plan for Agriculture? Why have they NOT invested in Ships to procure and transport the bounty of Dominica et al, they have loads of edibles rotting???

    These IDIOT “leaders” will not appreciate that the West is in economic tumult and excellent strategies MUST be developed for survival. The Milk and Honey Days DONE! FINITO!     Africans slaves in Barbados can be traced back to specific tribes by DNA analysis some are Eboes, Paw-paws and Igbo. It wasn’t same tribes people that sold their own into slavery to British slave traders, like some disingenuous posters are trifling. On macro level UK Government would be responsible for reparations to Caribbean Islands like Barbados as they established slave ports, plantations, slave trade and subsequent businesses in the island

    John……….do you know how long i have been try to get you to admit that….hell, you just have to look in the faces of the black people in the Caribbean and realize they are descendants of African slaves, no DNA tests needed, but you insisted on going around and around like if melanin and African features lie…….anyway, you stopped before i can give you proven examples of DNA testing used widely to prove with deadly accuracy, ancestry.

    Amused…………i was really amusing myself with John, i knew he knew better but was playing the ass. What most people are not realizing about the reparations case is that it would give the descendants of enslavers and exploiters pause, they are now in a situation and with a wide open door available to them where re-enslavement of blacks is highly possible because of weak leaders in the Caribbean. I see the lawsuit as being a stepping stone to Caribbean people having the power to reassert themselves as being major players and not just the descendants of slaves, the Japanese, Jews and others did it, there is no reason for Caribbean people to sit around and be continually profiled.

    Moneybrain…………………..while living and working in New York up to the 90s i made a comment one day to a group of blacks that the credit card scam is the most evil perpetrated since slavery, why, because it was designed to enslave everyone, black, white and in between, they could not then grasp what i was saying and that was NY in the 90’s, they paid/are paying to learn…..fast forward to Barbados in 2005 when i visited and noticed they were embracing the credit card scam, when i mentioned my theory, they looked at me like i had two heads…….bet you they are not so obnoxious anymore, black people refuse to hear that they are slaves to consumerism, that word is easily translated to making others rich, most people don’t know that most of the credit card companies are domiciled in Delaware, home to the Duponts.

    The idiot leaders as you call them, like their African ancestors before them are leading their own people right down the garden path to be re-enslaved, they are too busy stroking themselves on attaining a man made title, greed and just plain stupidity to see what is happening in the world around them, case in point, i was in Canada earlier this year and knew that there would be a shutdown of the US Feds, also knew of certain other happenings that i am sure you are also aware, yet the leaders in Bim still found themselves in England and the US trying to borrow funds that they should have known no one is going to lend because of a myriad of ongoing factors, so we have leaders who are ‘educated’ idiots and a populace who are just dumbed down consumers and slaves to their wants………encouraged by the same leaders to remain consumers (slaves)……we will see another brand of slavery materialize under a new and very attractive name.

    Kiki………there is more than enough proof available that Barbados was the clearing house for transatlantic African slavery perpetrated by the British……just like banks in the US have their clearing houses in Delaware or Texas, Barbados was the clearing house for African slaves, they were then transported to other Caribbean islands, US and wherever else the slave traders believed they could enrich themselves……there is more than enough written proof in Merseyside, most of the information, log books, etc, can be found there…..the posters who are trying to deter the reparations movement don’t know half of what is going on..

    I have an ancestor who was as far as I can tell of Portuguese extract.

    My dna will show African origins not only because my ancestors came in the days of the Atlantic Slave Trade (provable) in the holds of slave ships but also because they came from Africa via the Iberian Peninsula!!

    The Moors, out of Africa, up to 1492, were present on the Iberian peninsula, Portugal included.

    The Trans Sahara Slave Trade moved millions of Africans from the same sources as did the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

    In fact, whereas the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade went on for perhaps 3-4 centuries, the Trans Saharan Slave Trade went on for 14 centuries, four times as long.

    Historians estimate 10 – 18 million Africans were taken between 650 and 1900.

    Estimates of Africans who were brought to the New World on ships are put at 12 million.

    Slaves from the same sources that came to the West Indies walked in caravans to the North Coast of Africa routinely and provided the cheap labour to the Moslems in Spain, Portugal and all along the Mediterranean.

    They no doubt mixed with local populations and shared their dna, like they did here. In fact, their dna had far longer to spread outside of Africa.

    Caribbean peoples who clearly have African Blood may have it not because their ancestor was a slave who came on a slave ship.

    That is why there is a probability that a person in Barbados whose dna shows African Origins has no ancestors that came on a slave ship, as a slave in the hold.

    The ancestor may well have been its captain!!

    That’s the wonderful diversity of God’s Creation.

    It is pretty clear to me that neither one of you have ever heard of William Shakespeare and the play he wrote called Othello.

    It is about an African/Moorish husband, Othello and his European wife, Desdemona.

    Such relations were common as for a period, the Moors ruled Europe.

    The trans Saharan slave trade supplied over a period of 14 centuries slaves from the same areas of Africa as the trans Atlantic slave trade did.

    Many ended up in Spain with their Moorish Masters and their dna spread throughout Europe.

    It follows that Europeans themselves also brought African dna to the New World.

    John…………it’s well known by a minority of blacks, including myself that the Black Moors of Africa once ruled Europe, well after all, who never heard of Hannibal invading Italy and impregnating all the Italian women hence they (the Italians) have those olive complexions, it’s just that 99.99 percent of black people did/do not know that Africans once ruled Europe and the story behind how Europeans were given information by the Moors on how to control the world, thereby getting themselves deported from Europe shortly after, when the Europeans realized that knowledge is power and they had just acquired knowledge because of dumbass black moors……having said that, that is absolutely no excuse to enslave, kidnap, rape, brainwash etc. etc, a whole continent of people for centuries and all the more reason to bring the reparations lawsuit to fruition.

    What you can do, since you insist you are black is to post more information about when Blacks ruled the world so that Caribbean black people can lose the notion that all they are good for is to become slaves and consumers. Better yet, post information on when black females ruled the world so the current dumb females would stop wearing those ugly weaves and wigs and embrace their beautiful strength that lies in their beautiful strong black skin and hair.

    Reparations are being sought for descendants of African slaves ….. and I need to add …. who were victims of the trans Atlantic Slave Trade, not the Trans Saharan Slave Trade!!
