At this epoch of Mankind’s evolution, where democracy and respect for human rights are being immortalized as indispensible virtues which every society must possess and are universal yardsticks by which the actions of governments are measured, it is almost inconceivable that there are still those who continue to reject the idea of reparations for descendants of African slaves. Recently, a book on the subject by Professor Sir Hilary McD. Beckles, pro-vice chancellor at the UWI Cave Hill campus a leading activist and economic historian was published. Entitled Britain Black Debt: Reparations for Caribbean Slavery and Native Genocide, it sets out a compelling case for Reparations from Britain which cannot be counteracted by any of the sophisms and specious reasons posited by cynical detractors.

  1. @ Well Well …who said..
“…In an update today re the US shutdown, the Chinese stated and i quote “because of the pernicious state of the US shutdown, the world needs to become de-americanized and a new centralized currency introduced.” They currently hold 3.5 trillion dollars of America’s debt, talk about calling the shots. I hope the leaders in the Caribbean understand the ramifications of such utterings.”
    ************
You better hope that your AMERICAN friends understand the ramifications…..
This shutdown may well be the catalyst that leads to the long proposed creation of a new global currency….and will put an end to Uncle Sam’s ability to just print dollars willy nilly.
Wunna ass will be immediately in the grass – rough – rough…. LOL ..ours too, but at least we know how to do ‘poor’ better than wunna..

  2. Schupseeeeee. Ras go find some meaningfull work nuh?

  3. Bush Tea, if I owe a man $50,000, I worried. If I owe him $5 trillion, I eint worried no more, cause now he nuff more worried than me.

  4. Excellent point Konkieman, except that the man you talking bout is a half – a -idiot who don’t see things the way we do….
This is a fellow who does think 500 years down the road; who have no problem with a couple million lives here or there..

The other trick is to borrow 5 Trillion dollars and then force the currency to be devalued to the extent where that $ 5T is now worth next to nothing (easily done through quantitative easing) otherwise known as printing money…..

Either way…. It will backfire when the world decides finally to drop the US $ as the international trading currency. The day after that happens the USA (and all it’s appendages like us) will implode

  5. Bush tea;
Right. That is another situation staring us in the face that few in Barbados seem to be aware of. China will call in its chips sometime. Not necessarily now, but sometime in the not too distant future.

Yuh talk ’bout we ass is grass? Grass (vegs etc.) may be all we will be able to afford then.

  6. LOL @ Checkit-out
Grass (vegs etc.) may be all we will be able to afford then.

…so why you think Bushie is a BUSH man….?

  7. China made a statement today that with all the drama occurring in the US, fiscal cliff, debt ceiling etc the world needs to decouple from the green back. Wil try to find the link.

“Watch WWII footage about the discovery of death camps and you will realize it was a secret kept even from the German people.”

the only thing kept secret were the death camps. Germans paid with their lives to resue Jews. it was wrong but it was the law to accommodate jews, just like it was with the slaves, their captors knew it was wrong but laws were enacted to make it legal and yes just like the jews, whites were punished when discovered rescuing them. i agree with Pinkie, the Jews got their justice in the form of money, the ancestors of slaves are entitled to theirs

  9. If we get some reparations then I telling wunna now, I want piece personally cause everyone been telling me for years I part black.

  12. On a trip to Bergen-Belsen,some years ago, while serving in BAOR, when the locals were asked for directions to the old extermination camp, just like during WW2, they pretended that they were not aware of such a place. That is why towards the end of the war when the Yanks crossed the Rhine and came across Bergen-Belsen,General Eisenhower , rounded up all the people in the surrounding villages ,and showed them what was going on in their neighbourhood,,and as he so rightly put it…..”because someday some bastard is going to say that this never happened.”

  13. It has been reported that Caricom has hired Leigh Day & Co., the legal firm which recently won the case for compensation for the Kenyan Mau Mau rebels, who were tortured by the British government in the 1950s and 60s, wherein the British government agreed to pay £19.9 million to thousands of Kenyans survivors.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

How on earth can reparations be paid to survivors of slavery which ended nearly 200 years ago?

Is Caricom going to be able to somehow give legal status to duppies?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh … I get it, our leaders will be paid the reparations and see to it that the duppies get it!!

That way the duppies don’t need to have legal status.

    Simply brilliant.

    Do you mean descendants?

It isn’t the descendants of the Mau Mau that are getting reparations.

It is the actual living survivors of those who were tortured.

Similarly, after WWII, many survivors of the Holocaust were alive and had been wronged by the state.

  15. Final for the night …..

It is pointless looking for survivors of slavery that was abolished nearly 200 years ago.

    There are none.

What survives is the thinking which led to the abolition of slavery as a legal construct and a moral norm.

Thousands of years of history were changed.

Man’s heart was changed by God.

This change is what survives and this is directly traceable to access to the Bible which has its own rather horrible history.

Give God the Glory and stop looking for financial handouts.

  18. For those who have not read the submission here is what it states near the end:

The following is a non-exhaustive list of practical means by which of compensation can be made:

    – Free education

    – Free healthcare

    – Land grants

    – Interest-free loans

    – Rehabilitation centers

    – Cultural and Social programs to instill solidarity among the members of the African Diaspora.

Though there may be many other specific ways of providing compensation, ultimately reparation has to become a complete science of doing repair and providing redress for injustice. After the reparations program is undertaken, there should be experts and fields of study in providing reparation. The benefits to be derived will be tremendous. Effective implementation would help foster understanding and promote tolerance; uniting the global village under a common banner of good will.

  20. Bush Tea…………i do poor even when loaded with cash, remember i eat only one full meal a day, by nature not a consume, don’t need to buy everything my eyes see,, don’t wear weaves or anything that is fake…….i have undies nearly as old as you, and maybe in better condition ….LOL….i drink a lot of bush tea…….just see me watch the consumers disintegrate under stress and pressure.

  21. Baffy…..Problems…..C4 and Lawson need checking on the Octoroon scale as well as the abducted or sold status of their Black ancestor……BT says you have to be black to get anything….looks like time for the melanin counter…..this getting difficult….some of us may not pass….

  22. @Vincent

Of course you have conveniently ignored other suggestions how funds can be distributed. You flippant responses by trivializing an issue which is important to many Blacks is noted.

  23. David…would be greatfull if based on the discussion to date, you can show me how I have trivialised the issue of reparations,by highlighting the difficulties of arriving at equitable distribution of whatever reparations that are agreed upon for the progeny of what occurred over 200 years ago.

  24. @Vincent

If reparations were to go the route of being distributed to a national fund (getting ahead of ourselves) how does measuring ‘blood’ remain relevant?

  25. David my comments are based on the writings of BAF(blood line),Amused,Jeff,BT,C4 and Lawson.Still need to see how I have trivialised anything.

  26. John | October 14, 2013 at 10:54 AM |

speaking like a true descendant of a slave would have spoken just after emancipation…who does not believe he deserves what was stolen from his ancestors and thinks by siding with the white race, it brings him closer to them….SMH what utter shame

  27. David

I am not trivializing anything just reducing your submission to simpler terms.

I too read the bit at the end, besides the bit about the survivors of the Mau Mau.

What is so difficult to understand about the difference between a survivor and a descendant?

There is not a mention of the descendants of the Mau Mau but the article is replete with mentions of the descendants of African slaves.

There are no survivors of slavery to benefit from the following non-exhaustive list of practical means by which of compensation can be made:

    – Free education

    – Free healthcare

    – Land grants

    – Interest-free loans

    – Rehabilitation centers

    – Cultural and Social programs to instill solidarity among the members of the African Diaspora.

Though there may be many other specific ways of providing compensation, ultimately reparation has to become a complete science of doing repair and providing redress for injustice. ….. there are no survivors to benefit from this science.

After the reparations program is undertaken, there should be experts and fields of study in providing reparation. Since there will be no survivors around after the reparations program, there will be no need for the experts.

The benefits to be derived will be tremendous but alas, there are no survivors around to enjoy them.

Effective implementation would help foster understanding and promote tolerance; uniting the global village under a common banner of good will. ….. what a load of rubbish!!

  28. @John

What we are having is a Reparations Debate and yes there are loose ends. The pursuit of reparations by Caricom has taken on a moral cause rather than in the Mau mau’s case survivors of a criminal act asking for judgement.

  29. I am a descendant of African slaves …… a simple fact. I don’t need a dna test to prove it, my pedigree is available.

This article is directed at descendants of African slaves ….. like me …. but does nothing for me.

So Bush Tea, it has nothing to do with Blackness, the qualification is “descendant of African slaves” and you can console yourself in the knowledge that even if you are an oreo or an octoroon, a quadroon or any other weird and wonderful creation of nature, once you are a descendant of African slaves, the article applies to you!!

    Read the article!!

I, and you cannot be equated with a survivor of the Holocaust or a survivor of the Mau Mau rebellion.

I, and you cannot ask for reparations for what happened to my and our ancestors 200 years ago.

… but I, and you can deal with the now.

And we can do so because my and your ancestors, whether they were African, European, Jewish, Amerindian, Irish or Scottish, or whatever else were led to a way of thinking that allows us to do so today.

  30. face it David
This reparations thing is simple MENDICANCY.
Begging for handouts by playing on people’s guilty conscience.

    Reparations Bushie’s pooch!!!
Trust CARICOM to be obsessed with that shiite at a time where we need to stand up like MEN and WOMEN and carve out a future for ourselves…. Steupssss

For the last 50 years we have been exploiting the people’s guilty conscience with sugar quotas, special grants, easy loans, visa wavers, development aid…all kinds of MENDICANCY…… and now instead of having GROWN up! we begging like likkle blasted children… Steupssss

When Barrow talked about moving from the canefields he actually meant moving from such mendicancy and to the point where we could STOP loitering on the damn people doorsteps…..
…by being innovative, hard-working, productive and enterprising….NOT by damn extortion…..
    Brass bowl lackies…..!!!

  31. @Bush Tea

We live in a world where deals have to be made to ensure survival.

    Join the cause!

  32. Here is an example where reparations is being sought in a law court for the descendants of Aztec slavery.

    =
It’s all about Timing when historical racial crimes by Governments will be looked into

60 Years ago struggle for civil rights, blacks were segregated, hosed by police, shouted and spat at for attending a school, lynched as norm

25 Years ago Apartheid State of South Africa was releasing Mandela from Jail for 25 years prior to dismantling Apartheid and Mandela becoming President

  34. Obama broke a Glass Ceiling and unwritten law that Blacks couldn’t become President

Extremist Whites are reinstating that unwritten law by reinstating Debt Ceiling

  35. man David Bushie could NEVER join any cause that seeks to put a dollar value on what was done by those devils to our ancestors….. NEVER!!!
    …also Bushie don’t beg!
    …also Bushie don’t NEED their money….indeed,….
….shortly, the descendants of those devils will be approaching the bushman for justice…..

We live in a world where “survival” is NOT the REAL objective….but strength of CHARACTER is….

  36. The article said:

“”Sure, it was legal to cut out hearts back then, but that doesn’t mean these obsidian knife manufacturers and mining companies shouldn’t be held to a proper moral standard, even if it is 500 years later,” said Cabrera-Estevez.”

    ________________________________________
I believe that statement says it all re reparations.

Bush Tea…………i do agree with some of your comments, but dammit, just like these lawmakers shout from rooftops about criminals being held accountable for murders and all manner of evil crimes……..their ancestors and by extension they themselves should not just benefit from criminality and live happily ever after….that is not moral standards, that is telling them they can do the same evil again, because why, their evil ancestors got away with it, they were never going to lock up themselves A serious message needs to be sent, why, because we are the survivors and can do so successfully.

  37. Well Well. | October 15, 2013 at 10:45 AM |

Carry that to a court of law with precedents to support it.

What you may have to ask that a new law be enacted.

  38. I believe reparations are a step towards reconciliation and integration with respect. The White Superiority Racial Myth has to named and shamed for the sake of our children and link to the future, next generation of toddlers will be strong

  39. @ KIKI
I believe reparations are a step towards reconciliation and integration with respect.
    ************
    It could be.
…..if the descendants of the slave exploiters exhibited genuine remorse, repentance, and CHOSE to give their ill gotten inheritance to the poor (cause Bushie got more than most of them anyhow) and sought Bushie’s forgiveness…..

Wuh shiite man…… OF COURSE Bushie would forgive them. OF COURSE they could be integration and respect….

But that is not the same as seeking to force them to hand over their ill gotten inheritance …… LOL Wuh that is probably exactly how their ancestors saw the original slave trade anyhow…..of forcibly taking something that they felt was rightfully theirs…..we would be just like them – except instead of taking stuff ‘vi et armis’, we would be taking it ‘vi et courtis’…. LOL Ha Ha …or is it ‘de lege lata’?

How ya like Bushie Latin GP? …

  40. Bushie……becarefull…..David does not like loose talk on this subject…..he raps knuckles and notes positions…..By the way how black is black?

  41. Bushman, try being less egocentric, this isn’t about you, who feels it knows it… it is about perpetrators inheritors admitting wrongs, apologising before forgiveness, eliminating inherent manifest white racism still present which was the moral justification for the crime. White kids should be taught to explain why slavery and racism is/was wrong, so black kids don’t have to

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you go by the article published it matters not how black ( !!??) you are.

All that matters is whether you are the descendant of an African Slave … which for example I am.

It follows therefore that an African who may be as black as the ace of spades but whose ancestors never became slaves does not qualify for reparations.

Skin colour does not apply …. hey this may actually described as a completely non-racist act.

  43. John…………..i believe we can truthfully and without any reservations whatsoever say that the blacks born in the Caribbean during and immediately after slavery will definitely and without a shadow of a doubt qualify as descendants of slaves and African Slavery, it is not rocket science, they did not take a plane or boat from Africa and decide to migrate to the Caribbean…………..you are nitpicking much.

  44. WW

Go to the archives or easier, go onto familysearch.org and see if you find a single baptismal certificate “immediately after slavery” which says whether the child, or adult, is black, white or blue!!

In some cases there are no records!!

How do plan on truthfully saying what you want to?

There will be no record saying WW’s great great great great grand parent was born on such a date to such and such a slave!!

I can show that one of my many ancestors was born to a mulatto slave around 1816 because it so happens the child was baptized and she is shown in 1802/3 baptizing her first of 10 children described as a mulatto slave property of xyz!!

However, for many at the time of emancipation, there is only a first name in the slave register with no surname.

    That’s just how it was.

I can also show another of my many ancestors from a will of the owner was probably around in 1721 when he was freed but there is absolutely no record of his birth in church records ….. and not because he was a slave.

I have other ancestors who also do not appear in Church Records for the simple reason they did not attend church ….. like most other families of the era ….. and not because they were slaves!!

I believe they were “white”, but would not put my hand on a Bible and swear this was the case given what I have found out in my research.

    I am dealing in reality!

For an African, born in Africa it will probably be impossible to tell if he or she is the decendant of an African slave.

That is just how it was!

  45. @Bushie et al
This is a very complex subject, simply because it is NOT just black versus white. I am apparently very white as I had blond hair as a kid and blue eyes, BUT most of my family did NOT ever own slaves, on my Mother’s side they did in the 1700s. My Mother was a poor orphan and my Father had to go to work at 13 to help feed his multitude of siblings.

So how could I be responsible to owe anyone? Especially when most of my friends at home and School were NOT White and I have never treated any person negatively, called them names ie the N word etc. I have always treated people of colour with utmost respect and as I would a white person in the same situation.

Personally it was difficult to have to read the History of Slavery at HC especially when we learned that the slaves were counted with the Cattle and horses. The ancestors of my friends and peers.

I dont personally feel that I should have to pay large sums of money. I also dont think that it would be wise to give young black peeps $50,000 or whatever in cash.( or Pols who would likely take the Lion’s share as often happens) However, ensuring good education with Computer Labs and teaching programs, proper Health Care etc in predominately Black areas of Nth Am and naturally the Cbean would rate highly on my Agenda.

  47. John…………..have you ever heard of DNA registries, these can adequately and accurately pinpoint which tribe in which section of sub-saharan Africa the black people’s of the Caribbean originated, with every argument you bring i can bring four.

By the way, we should be all be keeping an eye on Haiti at this point to make sure their leaders don’t allow slavery of their people to be once again repeated………..Haiti is really not that far from the other Caribbean islands and if they are now looking attractive as the cheapest labor in the Caribbean, in the eyes of the descendants of known exploiters, guess how attractive bajans may look as slaves in another 2 years if the government on the island cannot get their acts together……everyone is looking for an argument against reparations but clearly cannot see the threat of re-enslavement of the Caribbean people looming right before their cloudy eyes……..LOL!!
