Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart
Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart

Tonight is shaping up to be a victory for the people and for Barbados. I am pleasantly surprised and quietly proud. We have defied all polls, expectations and political/election stereotypes. BU has been a great conduit for it to begin. Let us move ever closer towards that much needed tipping point and let’s hope that those who lead us wake up and realise that this is a wake call to do better for all of us

– Observing(…)

A result which the most ardent of DLP and BLP supporter did not predict. Barbadians have witnessed a 16:14 result in favour of the Democratic Labour Party. The result also blew the Wickham CADRES model to smithereens, made all the more interesting that Wickham performed two polls leading up to the general election. BUs one regret is that even as the country faces unprecedented challenges – posed by the global economic landscape – we have a parliament which will struggle to do business given the result.

Here is an opportunity for earth changing decisions to be made to the current system. BU hopes the actors in  our democracy do not allow this moment to slip. This is a victory for Barbadians.

  1. Observer, WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN NO ONE PREDICT THIS? I fucking did. How dear you dismiss my predictions? don’t you remember your response to my prediction were that three souths would be different? I call this dude. I did.

  2. Oberver I called this election result; have you forgotten already?

  3. Here is a link to the General Elections blog

Relax, the observation is a general one.

Owen”SEETHRU”Arthur has been seeking his hat trick of defeats, we gave it to him yesterday.
    First defeat, 2008 elections.
Second defeat, St. John bye election.
    Third defeat, 2013 elections.
    A hat trick of defeats.
    WELL DESERVED.
    Dems all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. The electorate has spoken, there is nothing here for the DLP to rejoice.

  7. So who will be the leader of the opposition?

  8. The country needs to find a way to come together given the challenges. Adrian is right, he has been begging for this result for a long time. The people have given no mandate. We need to have a serious conversation about governance.

  9. The problem is with Wickham’s interpretation of the polls not the polls themselves. He said the polls had not fundamentaly change -they were both within the margin of error; yet Wickham felt the need to pontificate in favour of a party, had he not done that he would not have to be defending his poll. Quite frankly the poll does not need defending. Wickham was simply wrong about what the results of his poll were saying. that’s all.

  10. This note is to my friend George Brathwaite who predicted an overwhelming victory for the BLP. I had to remind him that “the race is not for the swift, but he that endureth to the end. Let’s move forward together now, and let those who ppoured their vitriol on Mr. Stuart and the DLP come together with the government and let the country settle down to serious business. the partying done. Time for everyone to pull his weight. Economise, grow our own food, see how we can increase our exports and reduce our imports, buy a smaller car rather than a luxury car wtc. I am thankful to the people of Barbados for showing the level of maturity they have. No violence, no controversy, and a high level of behavior.

  11. Arthur clearly must resign and there is the possibility he may resign from his seat. Will Payne and Marshall be able to work with Mia?

PLANTATION DEEDS FROM 1926-2013 AND SEE MASSIVE FRAUD ,LAND TAX BILLS AND NO DEEDS

Well the KGB Steve Hunte called it ,of the C.U.P and he beat the poll and the 2nd poll,,, Next to meet with PM , on the Violet Beckles issue .

  13. Well Owen rode back in and removed the leadership from Mia back in 2010. Demanding an election every year since then. After another failure its about time he finally accepts his evening is over and let the next generation take his party forward.

  14. Agreed Adrian, Wickham’s reputation has taken dent. Perhaps the DLP base was energized to react to his second poll. He needs to do some soul searching. Arthur will speak shortly.

  15. George Brathwaite is a politically partisan individual, and as such, his pronouncements are to be listened to and nothing more. LOL!

  16. Hartley Henry’s analysis was bang on. Maybe the DLP needs to find a role for him.

  17. I love my Barbadians; they have finally demonstrated their long long held frustration with both parties by giving them 15/15 or 16/14 results; no stronger message could be sent to the political class that Bajans see no difference between the two major parties. Time for governance reform.

  18. DLP might not be the most ideal but Owen and his God complex can realize that some Barbadians feel he is not the only person capable of running or rescuing this country. Go and write the Econ books and enjoy retirement.

  19. I agree with Hartley opinon that this was a repudiation of incumbent politicians that did not meet the local needs of voters. I am hearten that Bajans have not abandon their local needs for some higher calling. Either change the system so that local needs are not abandon in favour of national responsibility or understand that you -members of parliament will have to do double time and attend to both.

  20. The power hungry label that the BLP pinned on Richie Haynes has now caught up with Owen. Good bye and god speed Owen.

  21. I repeatedly said the only Poll that matters is the one on Election Day. Barbadians refused to be MANIPULATED by the selected few. AC take a bow you have been tenacious, taking a lot of criticism here but you have stood steadfast, like a lioness protecting her cubs. . no praise is too high.

Barbadians I am proud of all of you. . . when the sun comes up tomorrow all of us can say thank God we are Bajans. . . that includes you my friend old onions.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart is a man of real Substance, this victory is yours, you have won it in your own right and that gives you authority. You could have gone to the polls after the death of Prime Minister Thompson and “perhaps” won a sympathy vote but this result gives you the authority of your own in battle. . well done Sir I have NEVER doubted your ability, you are a man of SUBSTANCE.

  22. The DLP has won 53% of the popular vote.

  23. @Yardbroom

There are no winners here, the people have spoken 16:14.

  24. David why would you want to deny the DEMS the thrill of VICTORY! don,t you think they earned that right after five years of constant attacks by the BLP and name calling……………DEMS YOU EARNED THAT RIGHT. HELL CELEBRATE

  25. The people have spoken .and the DLP WON!not feeling guilty or no apologises from Ac.

  26. @ac

The comment is not about stopping anybody from celebrating, the conversation has moved to how will we be able to govern the country effectively. There will have to be an appointment of a speaker and getting business done in a hostile economic environment will be a challenge. Many of us are looking at the priorities going forward.

  27. Are we all agreed Stuart will be selected PM?

  28. @Miller, Onions, enuff et al

    Your comments?

  31. Yes David there are three hundredd and sityfive days in ayear .how is one day of celebration going to impact on the goverance of this country. Five years of hell.by the BLP and one day of celebration would you deny those who fought hard and long tio see this victory come TRUE.David you must be in denial or total shock at turn of events give your election PICKS

    Hi David,
Can you help me locate the author of that post above………now that the DEMs got 64% of the popular vote and won 16 seats out of the 30.

  33. Again I make the point Owen’s bomb did not resonate with the public.Again I make the point that Barbados would have looked differently at the BLP if it had a leader other than Owen Seymour Arthur. Now he has to remove himself from the political landscape of Barbados. This greatest leader turned out to be the greatest liability.Oh how sweet it is!

  34. @ac

BU has no appetite to get in any tit for tit with you. The DLP has a slender majority let us move on.

  35. A strong victory speech by PM Stuart let us wish for good things to come.

  36. Hi David,

The PEGASUS saga really sunk Owen Arthur and the BLP.

    P – Peter (Whickham)
    E – Eagerly
    G – Gave
    A – Arthur ( Owen)
    S – Stink
    U – Undiluted
    S – Shite

    Pun a …….POLE !!

  37. Gloat all you want.

  38. The people have spoken. Congratulations to prime minister Stuart.

  39. Onions where art thou oh SERPENT ?

The DEMs won the election when you were saying all along………not a damn seat for them !

Your constant harangue for General Elections only caused you to get a brutal attack from the…….SLEEPING GIANT !!

  40. @adrian
    It wasn’t me! Blame David!!!

    @all
We have been back and forthing for years about governance, politics and representation. We nearly had a tied election and the result is a bare 16-14. And even in the separate seats the vote majorities are slim as hell.

After the speaker is selected then it’s a Parliamentary 15-14 and we will HAVE to work together. David said it right, now is THE time to pull together and have mature discussions for the sake of country. We deserve it, B, D or Nobody.

Let’s put aside the partisanship for a bit and see what emerges from this absolutely unexpected result. We may actually be able to make progress if the cards are played right.

Have a great post election day all.

  41. The only winners tonight were the people of Barbados, showing their maturity, power and ability to force a coalition. 16-14 was the electorate speaking, there is absolutely no doubt about that, they are fed up with both bands of clowns. Hope all partying and honeymooning is not at the taxpayers expense. Don’t know who the culprits are yet, but from what i understand hundreds of thousands of dollars was spent buying votes for $35,000 and upwards, with houses and land thrown in.

  42. To the people of Barbados, I commend you for not giving any of these two parties a landslide victory.

  43. Oh, and Wickham, you better run.

  44. For the die hard supporters from both parties, who don’t know what a 16-14 result means, this = THEY WILL BE BREATHING DOWN EACH OTHERS NECKS WITHOUT A LOT OF WRIGGLE ROOM. THE FATTED CALF WILL NOT HAVE ENOUGH INDIVIDUALS ON ONE SIDE TO DEVOUR. But we all know the fatted calf has already been mostly eaten to the bone. It will be fun to watch, I CAN’T WAIT!!!! ha,ha,ha.

  45. The electorate hav spoken. I am proud that Barbados has peaceful and respectful election days.

That said, I am surprised by som resutls, quite surprised.

One thing that some may not see, is that IF a DLP Parliamentarian becomes ill or leaves Parliament for any reason, with a bye-election, we could hav a hung Parliament and this government may not go long if that happens in any event.

  46. ”Adrian Hinds | February 22, 2013 at 2:52 AM |

I agree with Hartley opinon that this was a repudiation of incumbent politicians that did not meet the local needs of voters. I am hearten that Bajans have not abandon their local needs for some higher calling

Bang on. Note that some main ‘party’ seats suffered narrower margins than previously, including Arthur and Mara Tompson. While future PM Mia Amor Mottley increased her lead and trounced the opponent.

There is clearly a moe to individuals and many voters now see no difference between parties.

The other thing is, the BLP has only just begun ‘seasoning’ young candidiates, which the DLP did before last election.

That has been significant and I always thought that an error on the BLP part.

Nevertheless, I am still surprised, but as I said, things are in close balance in pParliament.

I wonder if this will make a difference about attendance in Parliament?

I cant wait to hear from Yardfowls, Peter Wickham, Patrick Hoyos, Winnie, Harrold Hoyte, The Nation Newspaper, VOB,former senator Linton, The so-called consumer rights man Malcolm Gibbs Taitt , David Ellis and all the other BLP Brasstacks Yardfowls, too numerous to mention.

  49. won’t be surprised if OSA again resigns handing over the leadership once again to MIA. his ego was deflated once again and handed to him in his hand, hopefully OSA got the message and would not stand in the way of his PARTY VICTORY come next election. last night might have been a sobering moment one in which OSA was sober enough to see the writing on the WALL. Pity his constituents didn’t take him out of his misery.

  50. How about Ryan Straughan who thought that his endirsement of OSA would have helped to pull off this landslide by the BLP
Well Wickham must be packing his bags and getting out of dodge because the questions going be hard and furious . Wickham INTEGRITY has been shot to hell in a handbasket second only to OSA moreover Wickman won the deviuos AWARD of being the “PUSH Pollster of all time. What a LOSER.
