Spare me Mottley’s faux hand wringing, didn’t she engineer the current problem? What is it? Three elections in eight years and the last two designed to catch the opposition party napping? Then you withhold party subventions that left a party to fight with one hand tied behind its back?

There s also the issue of her being uncharitable with subventions for opposition parties. She could have made it possible. She prefers to offer token seats in the Senate which legal luminaries suggest is not with her remit to do.

It’s not for nothing that I refer to you as the “mighty white”. I usually find you to be the voice of reason. What posts have you found “disingenuous and offensive?”
One clean sweep is unprecedented; but three in a row!!! This would suggest that the dark arts are at the fore front of our political system.
Imagine an African country producing similar general election results. The world would say, “well that’s Africa, what do you expect?”.
These results would indicate to me that no one is safe in Barbados. The inherited land that you are wedded to could be taken from you at a whim; your life could be shortened if you become a nuisance; or your citizenship could be revoked due to political expediency.
Do not become complacent. It’s winter in Barbados. The lion, the witch and the wardrobe was one of my favourite books when I was a youngster. Barbados appears to mirroring this book. “Out of the darkness must cometh the light” Bob Marley.
“PM Mottley marked the victory by declaring Friday a national public holiday and announcing a national thanksgiving and celebration rally for Saturday afternoon – Valentine’s Day – at the National Botanical Gardens.”
Would it not have made sense to have had a national public holiday on the day of the election? This would have allowed everyone to cast their vote. Free transportation should have been made available to the public. Some people struggled to both work and commute home to cast their votes.
Never mind, Friday has been declared a day for fetting. Just don’t ask where the money is coming from to pay for itt.

We dare say the if Mottley has 30 elections she will win them all. Only death can stop her.
Earlier, weee had tried to rationalize the statistical probabilities of this happening without going where you dared to. This reminds us of the Guyanese lawyer who won every murder case – Lucky Lookoo or something so.
When you went to Guyana then you’d find out that his family controlled the police force, the judiciary, the courts.
The game was rigged. And for the right price everybody got away with murder.
For to make such a suggestion will open one up to the charge of hating this because she’s a woman.
Anyhow, it’s just a matter of time before the population is force to smell the coffee brewing.
Low voter turnout means “we don’t believe that our vote makes a difference, B or D, duopoly, six o’ one is half dozen o’ de nex’. It represents, not satisfaction, but dissatisfaction with what BOTH PARTIES have done. That is the message it sends.
Everybody, including Mia, knows that is what it means. Regionally and internationally, one’s stature is diminished by low voter turnout.

Thank you for those kind words. However, I never even think about colour when it comes to a person. Black, white, brown, yellow etc et al. When cut, we all bleed red because we are all simply (and simple) humans.
How long does it take people to forgive a party for the wrongs they have done.
When there is no movement energy gets stuck and blocked, when energy is moving it is like water, when it is not moving it gets stale and smells when it starts moving those waters gets clean again.
When people are disenfranchised from politics they will be short changed.
When black people are disenfranchised from voting it means they feel they don’t belong or have no power.
No more floor crossing.
So from reading above it seems we have a situation where voters felt their vote would yield no change. Bs would win and Ds just are not worth the vote. As a result the voters in large numbers stood home.
Then there is the view that voting makes no sense because this government will do what they want anyhow. For example moving to a republic without referendum, taking up of state land on the beach in Holetown for another hotel and giving away of state land worth millions to bring a bank here, just to mention a few examples of what we speak of. These occured without consultation with us the voters and against push back by the said voters.
Seems like we dammed if we do and dammed if we don’t. Anyhow let’s see what this term brings.
Our great nation of Barbados is making world history with its third 30:0. Never since records began thousands of years ago has a government succeeded in creating such perfect harmony between the people, the state and the party.
Measuring our society and constitutional practice against traditional parliamentary democracy misses the point. The people do not want a principle of proportionality that makes governing difficult. Nor do they want an opposition that works against the interests of the people. The people want an efficient government that fuels economic growth and earns international respect for our great nation.
In view of these momentous changes, it is time to adapt the written constitution to constitutional practice as it is exercised in reality. What do we need and what do we not need?
1. No more Senate, which gives a voice to an extra-parliamentary opposition that works against its own people. Moreover, the Senate is a paternalistic remnant of the colonial era, when the white elite used the Senate to monitor the black masses.
2. An integrity law worthy of its name that prohibits private financial support to parties.
3. In return, generous, public financial support in election campaigns for all patriotic parties that have won at least 5 seats in parliament through elections.
4. By-elections for every parliamentary seat whose holder has betrayed the people by switching parties.
5. The right for the Prime Minister to issue emergency decrees to protect the people and the state without the consent of Parliament. Examples: Epidemics such as coronavirus, volcanic ash, gang crime and all other situations where swift, decisive action is required.
6. A competitive salary for the office of Prime Minister that reflects the global historical significance of this position.
7. Efficient regulation of social media so that patriotic voices can be better heard.

The army, the security guards of the gated communities, the police and the Mottley Youth, led by KK, march past the parliament building with burning torches after dark and pay tribute to our beloved Prime Minister.
On stage are the President, the Prime Minister, the new members of parliament, honourable representatives of the business community, the Chief Justice and ambassadors from democratic states such as the USA, China, Russia and the EU. The Prime Minister is presiding over the ceremony.
At the end, the President declares the Prime Minister a national heroine and unveils a new larger-than-life statue in her honour on the forecourt of Parliament. Afterwards, the President announces a new series of stamps bearing the Prime Minister’s image and a new national holiday on 1 October.

First order of business for PM
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has pledged to once again facilitate the appointment of two Senators for the Democratic Labour Party while revealing that one of the first bills in her new term will be anti-defection legislation aimed at Members of Parliament who cross the floor.
Speaking after her swearing-in at State House, Mottley made it clear that despite securing a third consecutive 30-0 mandate, she remained committed to ensuring opposition representation in the Upper Chamber.
“This Government, I did it once, I did it twice and I will do it three times,” she declared when asked whether she would extend the offer again.
Mottley said the principle of opposition representation in the Senate had long been supported within parliamentary reform discussions and reflected her party’s view that the country benefits from broader participation.
“They must be given a voice in the Senate and it is up to the Democratic Labour Party again . . . to be able to appoint two persons,” she said .
She added that her Government was prepared to facilitate the arrangement within the constitutional framework as an early order of business.
Anti-defection legislation
However, even as she extended that offer, the Prime Minister revealed that her Parliamentary Party had already agreed to introduce anti-defection legislation, a move that would require Members of Parliament who leave the party on whose ticket they were elected to seek a fresh mandate from constituents.
“We also agreed as a Parliamentary Party that one of the first bills that we will introduce into this Parliament is what we would call anti-defection legislation for persons crossing the floor,” Mottley said.
She said the proposal originated with members of the Parliamentary Party.
“It wasn’t raised by me, it was raised by members of the Parliamentary Party who felt that if you are prepared to break, whether voluntarily or by whatever means, that you should go back to the polls and allow people to be able to validate your decision,” she explained.
The proposed legislation comes against the backdrop of developments during Mottley’s first two terms in office. In 2018, after the Barbados Labour Party secured a clean sweep of all 30 seats, Reverend Joseph Atherley crossed the floor to become Leader of the Opposition. More recently, Ralph Thorne, also elected on a Barbados Labour Party ticket, crossed the floor and assumed the role of Opposition Leader ahead of the 2026 General Election.
While Mottley did not reference those names directly during her remarks, her explanation made clear that the issue of party switching was central to internal discussions.
“In our system, while formally there is no recognition of political parties, the de facto reality is that people run on a political party ticket and people are accepted… not only in their own individual right but also as the representative of this party, its programmes, its policies, its manifesto,” she said.
She pointed to the fact that candidates signed their party’s manifesto, committing themselves to its programme and policies as binding, arguing that voters deserved clarity and accountability.
Under the proposed framework, an MP who defects would be required to return to the electorate for validation, reinforcing the link between party mandate and parliamentary representation.
Beyond the parliamentary changes, Mottley reiterated her commitment to regional solidarity at a time of global uncertainty.
“If ever there was a time for the people of the Caribbean to walk together, it is now,” she said.
She argued that small states must rely on solidarity and a strengthened international rulesbased order to navigate geopolitical pressures, adding that collective approaches had already proven useful in areas such as crime policy and economic coordination.
Domestically, she reaffirmed her Government’s commitment to Mission 2030 and its six national missions, emphasising that transformation required a whole-of-nation effort.
She also highlighted poverty alleviation as a firm priority.
“One of the things that I’m going to be very, very firm on in this term is that . . . we must deal first with people who need before we deal with people who want,” she said.
Mottley concluded by underscoring Barbados’ democratic stability following the polls.
“There are not many countries in the world that can confidently thank people for a completely incident-free electoral process,” she said. (CLM)

We live in a world were when one tries to interrogate anybody it’s normal for most to assert innocense, to be defensive. Very few ever want to indict themselves regardless of how convincing the case may be.
When we indict White people for historical and present racist constructs they respond in defense. Even in silence there is a non-response response. From some others tooo.
When we indict Christians for ongoing crimes against humanity they respond similarly.
When the same line of arguments are made against Jews and Muslims we hear similar refrains, recieve hidden but active measures in reprisal.
Of recent, Western un-civilization has given us woke-ism. Therein, every boy is expected to bow to foolishness. To genuflect to the sounds of certain voices, etc. Not Pacha though!
These and more are now central to the human condition.
To suggest that a particular line of interrogation of those who sometimes define themselves as female as anti-woman, while at other times those same arguments benefit or benefited the same women, appears contradictory and suggest that somehow females are superhumans. That a certain gentility, even in politics, is required.
This writer has, at least once, forcefully supported Mia Mottley, even though she was clearly understood, like Ralph Thorne was, to be a deeply flawed personality.
Now that the evidence on Mottley is pelucid, this writer sees no hindrances in ruthlessly confronting her in the same way Fruendel Stuart was.
Weee shall never feel the need to approach Mottley or any other woman in public life with kid gloves, or tempered critiques, because she’s a female. That would be idiotic. For we’ve never seen Mottley to have that general disposition to other women or even men.
If, on the balance of probabilities, this amounts to a self-indictment, then so let it be!
I thought my last comment deserved its own post, so now we have it out of the way, let me address the wild claims of election rigging. I call them wild because they seem to be based on probability, forgeting that the improbability is not an impossibility and in fact does sometimes happen. I seem to remember a saying that goes,” The exception proves the rule.” Never did quite understand how, but others do, apparently.
Bring me some proof other than a few dozen registered voters who were not on the list! Happens every election and is most likely due to the expected human and computer errors. I have worked with both, humans and computers. They both make mistakes. Sometimes they even go haywire! The number of complaints so far are well within the expected range.
I am not, and have never been captivated by Mia Amor. The last politician who captivated me was big nose Don Blackman. However, unlike people of one perspective, I can often put myself in the shoes of others and see what they can see. And thusly have I seen what captivates others about Mia Amor Mottley. Just as I can see what others find captivating about their hideous Orange Jesus! It’s not just the racism and the misogyny. It’s not just that they see him as anti-establishment. It’s not just that they thought a businessman would take care of business. It’s not just that he fools them into believing he cares. It’s not just any of the “reasoned” reasons. There is something about him that my eyes sometimes catch a glimpse of before my brain fully kicks in. There has to be that something in every cult leader in order for them to form a cult! (Not that I think the BLP base is a cult. The damning evidence against Trump clearly cannot be compared to any evidence against Mottley.)
And somewhere, somehow, I have heard of stranger things happening than a party’s base turning out because they are diehards and much of the other party’s base is no longer enthusiastic because they experienced and cannot forget the dark days of what has been dubbed The Lost Decade. Quite appropriately, I must add. Only one good thing was accomplished, as I recall. They built a laboratory. But when they tried to build that waste-to-energy plant … !

I have never been a member of the DLP, but I voted DLP all my life until then. I have not voted DLP since. There has been nothing but nasty infighting, nasty leadership battles, high-handed treatment of members and promising senators since then. Ain’t nobody asking anybody to temper their criticism of Ms. Mottley. You were the one who said ( tongue in cheek, I assumed) you would do so lest you should be accused of misogyny.
All I did was give MY opinion. And that still stands: Ms. Mottley is no more dictatorial than any of the male prime ministers who went before her, whom many described as strong leaders. Some criticism was levelled at them, but it was never explosive an issue as it is right now.
It is still a known fact that assertive women are judged more harshly than men. I have experienced it myself, even here on BU.
There could be other contributing factors, such as a growing awareness of the merits of different leadership styles, and maybe the lack of an opposition is increasing the concern about democracy.
But Donna has had the experience. First time it happened, it came from someone I would never have imagined it would. Misogyny and racism are deeply embedded and hard to root out! How one sees “the evidence” can be skewed by hidden bias!
I recall too that even BU’s Misogynist in Chief voted for the BLP in 2018, consenting to the “indignity” of being “ruled by women”. Your support of Ms. Mottley is no proof against misogynistic perspectives. Even I had no problem with Trump wishing to control immigration, though I disagreed with his motives, his reasons, his rhetoric and his process. I agree with him that immigration needs to be planned and controlled.
The PM has no right to offer opposition senate seats to any political party since no party was listed on my ballot paper nor is party in the constitution.
The simple permanent solution is to change the constitution to state.
In the event of no elected parliamentary opposition, the president SHALL offer the vacant opposition senate seats to the losing candidates based on highest percentage constituency vote received until filled. If the offer is refused or the seat becomes vacant in the future, the next highest losing candidate will be offered.

Some countries even have their elections on weekends. For the past few elections that i can remember political candidates usually provide “gas money” for some of their supporters with vehicles. Those persons would traverse the constituency carrying people to the polls without charge. All in all, from what you may be insinuating, the low voter turnout is not due to people not having the physical means or not having the time to get to the polls.
The simple dynamic here is voters not motivated to go to the polling station in this particular election. This will be added to people that do not vote period and you will get a low turnout.
Lets not beat around the bush, the DLP is simply not an attractive alternative to form the government. Voters that want an alternative to the BLP don’t see any viable choices so didn’t vote. People who would have vote for the Bees but didn’t go to the polls felt that the BLP is not under threat of loosing the govt so didn’t “turn out”. The Dems and the other “third parties” probably hoped they would get some of the “cuh dear” vote i.e. they would get the votes of people that want an opposition. My sense is that Bajan voters are more complicated and discerning than that. Of note is that even in a low turn election the BEES are still winning MOST of the constituencies by large margins.
The overall irony is that we are a de facto “one party” state simply because one party is regarded as more stable than the rest. Based on the 2026 election results, the DLP is no better off than where there were in May 2018 which is telling in itself. By now, almost 8 years after the first 30-0 defeat, the DLP has not accumulated enough negative swing against the govt to gain at least 1 seat. The DLP has not won a seat in any elections since 2013. Going into a 2030 – 2031 general elections that would be nearly 20 years.
The Friends of Democracy has been a political party for less than a year so has not had enough time to “build up” a considerable base of support

While time maybe longer than twine, human life is finite.
I received “boos” when Republic status was announced, and suggested a new Constitution was required, before. I had nothing against moving to a Republic, I just was aware how long it takes to do things in Barbados.
And this was after, the first 30-0 and the issues that raised. Now after two more, the island faces many of the same questions.
And before we solve those issues, the first thing we are told, is legislation prohibiting ‘crossing the floor’, will be penned. Suddenly, what has always been known, votes for for party affiliation, are as common as, votes for the candidate themselves. Yet, no mention of party affiliation appears on the ballot.
Proportional representation could, at least partly, solve this.
However, subsequently infringing on the rights of the duly elected, is not an issue? For they are Party property. Or so it seems.
My suggestion an extra seat should be allocated in the Lower House for a Leader of Opposition in the event of another dreaded landslide scenario reoccurring again like a bad dream full of pain has failed as the next Government don’t see any problem with having no position for weak opposition in this dispensation for the younger generation of an independent nation

Voter apathy and polling day blunders
GENERAL ELECTION 2026 is now all over!
And at the end of the gruelling last three or so weeks, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) emerged victorious yet again, creating history with a three-peat of a 30-0 ‘redwash’ at the polls.
This column is going to touch on different aspects of the just-concluded election.
First, let me give Professor Dwayne Devonish of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus his welldeserved props. He was responsible for The Nation/ Starcom national political poll which was – pun intended – on point.
He captured all the major developments and talking points of this election. He was spot on with his findings – from the prediction that the BLP would secure its third term, to the major issues that mattered to the people of this country, and the question of leadership.
Devonish also dealt with the major issue of voter apathy, highlighting it was one of the biggest talking points of this election.
In fact, right now, while we are all waiting for the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (EBC) to learn the final figure regarding the voter turnout, we know it was low.
I am no political pundit or guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I strongly believe this General Election was won on the issue of leadership.
When I looked back at the Nation/ Starcom poll, the 1 145 respondents really dug deep into this issue and were vocal with their views.
The contrast between the two major political leaders was stark and very clear.
Strong mandate
While Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley enjoyed a strong personal mandate, with more than six in ten respondents expressing a favourable view, then Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne faced a credibility gap. Sadly, there were many Barbadians who had formed a clear opinion of Thorne as a potential national leader, expressing concerns about his readiness, seriousness and leadership depth among the more educated voters.
While many praised his boldness and courage to speak out, some did not see him as “prime minister-ready”.
On the other hand, many said they were impressed with Mottley’s leadership and decisiveness, international stature and representation.
I was fortunate to physically take in a couple meetings from both parties, plus the Friends of Democracy during the campaign.
The BLP platform centred a lot of its messages on the leadership of Mottley, clearly recognising this was a plus for their campaign.
Just as this election was about Mottley’s leadership, it was also about voter apathy and uncertainty.
One in five
The poll showed that one in five Barbadians indicated they would not be voting. In fact, Devonish stated that when one combined the uncertain, the won’t say and those who said outright they were not voting, it was almost half of the electorate – 45.6 per cent.
This should definitely have been a concern as I pointed out in this same space about two weeks ago. Truth is, we saw this become reality before our very eyes on polling day. I covered the length and breadth of St Thomas last Wednesday morning visiting polling stations and did not see long queues of voters. Reporters covering other parts of the island reported the same.
Somehow, there is a figure of 30 per cent voter turnout being bandied about, but we really need to wait on the EBC for the final figures on that. Others more familiar with election day results have put it at 40-something per cent so far. Again, we wait.
Let me go back to election day. Before I started work that day, I decided to cast my vote to get it out of the way. Here is my experience.
Weeks before the poll, I checked online through the EBC’s website to find out where I was voting and it showed the Jackson Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church. I was a little surprised because having lived in St Thomas for more than 20 years, I had never voted there. Then, the day before the election, I received my circular in the mail indicating I was voting at Lester Vaughan School, which was my usual polling station.
On Wednesday morning, I drove to the school which was not too far away from my residence. Initially, when it was at the SDA church, I thought I would walk to get in my exercise, but then quickly changed my mind. Luckily I did because when I arrived at Lester Vaughan, I was told I was now voting at the church.
As I drove there, I thought to myself: what about the people who walked to the school but were then told upon arrival they were voting at another location? I wondered if they returned home and put off voting, or if they walked to the new location.
Check register
I raise this only as I noted the CARICOM observers said that we as voters had a responsibility to check the register to ensure our names were in the right location and if they were not, then make the necessary requests or representation to ensure this was resolved.
Now, in my case, I was sure my name was on the voters’ list and there was also no reason for me to doubt where I would be voting.
Let me say, I don’t ever remember an election where the EBC has come under so much fire and was under the microscope as it was this year.
From where I sit, it seemed as if chairman Ramon Alleyne was MIA coming down to the end, not even taking calls from reporters who wanted answers to questions posed by members of the public. I continue to make the point that the media works on behalf of the people of this country, not for ourselves. Our job is to seek clarity and answers for the public, who do not have the access we do to those in official positions.
Yet, at every turn, I can hear reporters telling me they were unable to reach Mr Alleyne.
Thankfully, the Chief Electoral Officer Sherland Turton, though busy, recognised the importance of making herself accessible, even if for a few minutes.
In my opinion, the EBC needs to do its own review and relook its operations vis-a-vis elections.
The CARICOM observers themselves had some suggestions for the EBC, including: review your enumeration and registration process to enhance the management and accuracy of the voters’ list. What occurred on election day with some voters reporting they were not on the list, or a mix-up in location for voting and even prior, the challenges of people simply wanting to ask questions pertaining to voting, must not be allowed to happen again.
