The wonderful sight of teacher and pupil reunited at the Alexandra School – Photo credit Barbados Advocate

He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough โ€“ Lao Tzu

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is defined as all โ€œtheย  final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of timeโ€. Can BU draw a parallel and define the well being of a country by the quality of key decisions made by theย  โ€˜leadersโ€™ in a given period?

The debate which continues to gain traction in Barbados is about the Alexandra dispute and related issues. It has displaced discussion about the upcoming general election, and significantly, a conversation about the state of the economy. If one were to ask any educated Barbadian what issue should be occupying the attention of the country, the answer should be โ€˜managing the economyโ€™. It does not mean that all the issues at play in the country should be ignored, just that the exigencies of now require priority planning how we allocate resources.

Tension at the Alexandra School has peaked and troughed since 2005, surely an indictment on the management system with oversight for education. Many problems currently being wrestled by the government have straddled both political parties and different personnel in the public service. What it exposes is a rotten core which drives decision making in Barbados.

A scan of traditional and social media also exposes the inclination by Barbadians to dwell on the minutia of the argument. Some favour Broomes and others the BSTU to pick two of the main actors in the unravelling imbroglio. After observing a ten year dispute at a secondary school, what should be the priority position of the actors involved in the dispute and general public? Should it have something to do with children at the school perhaps? What should be obvious given the hardened positions built up over a decade is that all sides in the dispute need to thaw positions and demonstrate a capacity to compromise; for the childrenโ€™s sake.

It was predicted by many that one of the options available to Jeff Broomes and the transferees was to resort to the filibuster tactic of sick leave. Does any sensible person believe these people are sick? Does anyone believe that the children looking on believe these people to be sick? How will this dishonest action impact the childrenโ€™s future behaviour?

The Prime Minister suggested on the weekend that if all the players involved in the resolution of the Alexandra School problem – who are mostly university graduates – cannot solve the issues they should return to the cane fields. We have become so divisive a people that the statement by the Prime Minister has evoked discussion along partisan lines. Surely educated Barbadians understand what the Prime Minister meant by comparing knowledge workers of today to field hands of yore?

We urge all parties to remember the children.

  1. @Bush Tea ” the problem at AX has morphed from the initial rantings of miserable middle aged women”

    It was never a problem of miserable middle aged women.

    Only foolish misogynistic people made such statements

  2. TTP peace at AX does not translate in peace for all. The AX matter now extends outside the walls of the institution. what we have now are smoldering fragments on the outside that is keeping the fire burning. .

  3. good to see simple simon called out the hypocrtical Bush TEA now acting like judge ! jury ! and executioner on the AX matter . i am really perplexed at how he made such an about turn. after many calls to fire all the menopausal teachers for disobeying the tyranical Jeff Broomes in his earlier stance in the AX matters.

  4. @Smooth chocolate Jan 9 at 8:26 pm “I could understand and accept Mr. Broomes illness of Hypertension as it is not secret that he has that medical condition”

    Since you seem to be a medical professional, prescribing treatments for the other teachers can you tell me if rum drinking makes hypertension worse?

  5. @AX

    d u really mean burning? we shall see what we shall see. why hasnt bstu got support from the other unions apart from caswell’s union, lol. I think the BSTU fire has been hosed down and thats the renmant of the water down and it will soon out.

    Remember that there are a number of retired teachers who are vaialble to assist in teaching the nation’s children.

  6. @simple

    little rum is good for the system. the doctors say that. Every thing should be done in moderation? Dont u think so.

    Can u tell me if pretending to be sick dont have a psychological hold on u after a while that u beleive u have the artificial symptons?

  7. @Dr. the Honourable Fool “There was a rise in the number of female teachers ; There was a decline in standards. The rise in female teachers is therefore the cause of the decline in standards. Other things have declined too-BECAUSE OF WOMEN !”

    Maybe the system has SEEMED to decline because nowadays the system has to educate all the children. In the good old days for which you hanker only the brightest, children, and those with the most committed parents received and education. So it may SEEM that the system has declined. In reality as in all modern democracies the system is struggling to educated everybody, even those who have no interest in education, even those with very little capacity to learn. And women teachers are at the forefront of teaching ALL our children, even those of our children with very little capacity. I BIG-UP our women teachers.

    If women teachers are the problem what do you plan to do, take them all in Independence Square and shoot them?

    What are you proposing gender cleansing?

    The PM spoke about an ” EMISSARY ” who delivered the message from Owen Arthur and whom he said he will name at the appropriate time . He also said the message was followed up by a WRITTEN NOTE TO HIM FROM OWEN ARTHUR WHICH HE HAS KEPT. I cant wait for the evidence ; the PM will have to make disclosures to protect his credibility which up to now has never been questioned . I am sure Miss Mottley waiting too .

  10. @ ac
    You may not have noticed, but Bushie does NOT argue with women, children or fools…..

  11. BUSH TEA u such a FOOL. Who de hell argue wid a man that still living in the dinosaur era. Don’t take uself so seriously. old FOOL !SERIOUSLY !

    @TTP

    man all it takes a Strike action,. Btw nothing said about the other schools who have been affected by the teachers who are on sick out. it would be interesting to see if this matter is not resolved in haste how much problem it would cause for those schools adding to more transfers in seeking permanent resolve cause at some point and time a semblance of order must prevail.

  12. Good to hear the positive reports emanating from AX and about AX from key players. Excellent, a good first step.

  13. @ac
    AX is settling down on the surface. The other schools are missing 1 maybe 2 teachers. The MOE has a finger on the trigger to resolve that absence with dispatch. The BSTU will lose further ground as time passes. They cannot strike (legally). The Principal of AX, the Minister, the students and the CEO has spoken…hence the PR war is lost. No one cares about Broomes anymore, he’s no longer a match to light flames. Discussion or no disussion, game, set and almost match.

    @baffy
    Since it is you I will give you it for free

    @TTP
    I expected more of a robust legal, procedural, fight from the BSTU. This retreat to a position of compromise and resorting to “sick leave” shows me they were even weaker than I thought. Good luck with persuading Caswell. We all have failed so far!

    @simple simon
    The abundance of young female teachers is a contributor to some of our problems. The disparity between male-female teachers is doing our young males and to some degree the system a disservice. Having said that, I’m not blaming these females. It just is what it is and what it has become.

  16. @ David .
    I did use the word ” compromise ” . Do you not consider that compromise is what is needed to bring an end to this problem if the overriding objective of educating the nation’s children is to be achieved?

  17. DR. THE HONOURABLE Avatar
    DR. THE HONOURABLE

    Anybody that refuses to accept that the rise in -woman power– is the cause of many of our problems is not dealing with reality. Women are worse than NAKAWS !!!!!.

    Wise old men kept women far from decision making, leadership and influence. Women have a role to play. Let them play that role. Any dismissal of this fact must lead to problems in society.
    NEXT: The rise and acceptance of Homosexuality

  18. Compromise in Barbados, this relic of a Plantation ego-system? Man look if there is a power play to be played it will be, and the ppl will lap it up … (Barbados could use a terrorist or two ..)

  19. @Hal

    Of course!

    The word compromise MUST feature in any dispute especially one which is as entrenched as the AX imbroglio. Our regret is that is has featured too late in impasse.

  20. I am still at lost as to what there isto “compromise” andwhat it would entail given that Broomes is gone. and that could be attributed to the BSTU what is there to compromise. or maybe bargain for.

  21. @hal
    Good morning sir! Just one quick question. Was the word “compromise” in the vocabulary of the BSTU or their legal counsel back in January 2012 when the cry was “he must go…nothing else will do…we shall not return?”

    Just observing

  22. Hal Gollop ..”the overriding objective of educating the nationโ€™s children is to be achieved?”

    Greaves refused to teach and was no fired.

    Broomes refused to manage Greaves and was not fired.

    Broomes buddy became chairman of the board and is also on the PSC.

    They should be fired,terminated, removed or whatever terminology you use.

    Instead we have turmoil in the Education system and the Government doing damage control.

    However the children were educated to the fact that their teachers are possibly liars and hypocrits who sulk and pretend to be sick when they don’t get their way.

    I used the word possibly to make sure wunna can’t sue me.

  23. The word “compromise” sounds like a roll of thunder rolling of the tingue of Hal gallop in an attempt to stave off damage control to the BSTU. what happent to the thought of “setting precedant “and the long term ramifications and fall outcaused by govt actins in this resolve for the future “if” a similiar scenario presents itself. HELLO! what is the BSTU fighting for?

  24. โ€ฆ (Barbados could use a terrorist or two ..) Put your hands up Redman and Frost.

  25. @ac

    You may not be able to appreciate the point but it is an IR practice/convention that all players around the table should be allowed to withdraw with some dignity intact. Today my turn tomorrow your turn. It is a pity it has taken this look but it is time to turn the corner on this one and for ALL to hug the learnings.

  26. INVESTIGATOR

    To be honest Nelson and Yasser were considered terrorists too … so Jack and Pinky are in good company …!

  27. The teachers at Ax were intrenched but look at the type of entrenchment that they were up against …. How the hell could “compromise” have been pursued at any point in the game…? And as ac is saying, what the hell has been done to break up the old boys network that has been exposed by all of this …?

  28. @check it out
    While I may have been right a major trade union now has an enormous black eye, zero political capital and a diminished reputation as a result. That’s never a good thing even if it was their fault.

    @ac
    Compromise would have worked in January 2012. The BSTU killed their own dog.

    @david
    Dignity would be nice. But nice does not a solution make. The BSTU has no recourse, no case, no legal grounds, no public support, no smoking gun, no fairy godfather and no reasonable alternatives. If they want to save face, their best bet is to concede…acknowledge that something had to be done..it was not what they desired..they will continue to fight to reverse some of the transfers and they request a meeting with the authorities to collaboratively ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen again. Maturity, common sense, professional, understanding, and knowing when to fold them.

    Observing

  29. David i can appreciate “compromise”but in this case i appreciate that setting “PRECEDANT”can be obstructive for years to come in effect this outcome maybe be more like outting a small bandaid on a large hole. closing the window of opportunity to put an end to a legitimate and legal matter it not the answer cause when a similiar situation arises we would not all be wiser for it. i say continue the fight for legitimate and concrete resolve.cause it is the right thing to do.

  30. @ac

    Your position is understood but throwing the BSTU a small bone to put this matter to bed after a decade of turmoil is insignificant. The incompetents at PAD et al owe them.

    @observing

    The BSTU has a membership and must be allowed to walk away upright albeit with a cane.

  31. @Hal
    Compromise is an after thought of Redman,Froth & Co only because the GG has issued instructions which will not be recalled!You have difficult clients.Up to yesterday Redman was demanding that letters to some teachers be withdrawn.Who the hell Redman think she is?Freundel Stuart?He is the PM not Redman.He represents 300,000 bajans.She seem to speak for about 20 or so.
    @David
    Did you glean from the photographs in the press,the demeanour of the new principal of AX.The man is not grinning like some principals I see in the press.A pleasant but business like profile is what I saw.

  32. Ms. Mary Redman and her fellow instigators have been CORNERED and QUARTERED by their own folly.

    Freundel is a student of warfare. Notice how on Sunday 6 Jan 2013….he immediately silenced Owen Arthur and Mia Mottley with one startling revelation ” Dear Mia , your leader Owen wrote me a note asking me and the DLP family to accept you within the bosom of the DLP”

    Questions….how can the BEEs claim to be united ?
    Why has Owen refused to challenge PM Stuart on the veracity of that charge ?
    Why has Mia refused to repeat her call for the status quo at AX school to remain….now that PM Stuart has revealed what plans Owen has for her ?

    Noticeably absent from the BU site since PM Stuart’s revelation on Sunday night is…..BLP jokers Enuff , Miller and Old Onions bag .

    I warned you….Pegasus Hotel in Jamaica details are more crushing !

    5 more years for the BLP in the political wilderness !!

  33. As usual the modern day poets/philosophers i.e. the recording artists and lyricists get it right in song. In 1969 Mick Jagger and the Rolling stones released an album called โ€œLet it Bleedโ€ with a top hit titled โ€œyou Canโ€™t Always Get what You wantโ€ and Mary and BSTU are bleeding all over the place as they did not achieve what they wanted.

    They got half a loaf (Broomeโ€™s reassignment) but they wanted the whole bread, now itโ€™s time to pull up stumps and remember if they prolong the fight they may end up being martyrs. When they hit the showers they can belt out another Stones hit โ€“ ( I canโ€™t get no) Satisfaction.

  34. @ Fractured BLP…….
    The BLP does not have to answer to any desperate mouthings from a PM who now get up and is so afraid that he will lose that he refuses to call an election but is prepared to ride out the time until he legally cannot go anymore.

    A senior person in government told me……..I dont know why this man dont hurry up and call the election, we are going no where and he believes that the PM wants to take down all the Dems with him. He has not forgotten the gang of 11.

    The BLP gets where you nasty Dems are coming from. One of the Franklins said that the DLP has to throw mud and hope that it sticks, so the BLP is prepared for the DLP mud slings.

    You really think that Barbadians are foolish to believe the lies you plan to bring just to win an election. They did in 2008 and look where we are today. The people are going to vote for their pockets, so any filth you have to spew with go into the toilet where you Dems operate from.

    Remember the dead king had something on OSA and it blew up in his face. Freundel Stuart wrote a 17 point indictment on the dead king with some stinging nasty things against the dead king and what happen, did not the dead king eventually make him deputy so that Freundel is where he is today!

    Start spewing you filth, that’s what you Dems do best! Be careful, the law courts are still here!

    If Fractured BLP is so confident about the veracity of the note lying Fumble claims he received from OSA then let him publish it like the letter from the Eager Eleven. Like the $75,000 campaign cheque let us see a photocopy of the handwritten note duly signed by OSA. Nothing word-processed will suffice either; unless it shows OSAโ€™s name and known signature so we can carry out a handwriting or calligraphic analysis.

    Unless Fumble the deceitful Mr. Integrity can produce such we will have to treat him the same way he treated the Eager Eleven. But then he can carp again about the note being โ€œstolenโ€ just like the CLICO Forensic report, the FBI report and the many documents that he miraculously seem to lose. Even the 10, 000 civil servants to be fired can’t save his sorry ass.

    “Ms. Mary Redman and her fellow instigators have been CORNERED and QUARTERED by their own folly.”

    It serves Mary and her stupid sheep right to receive the current arrogant dismissal treatment from the government and criticisms from the public the BSTU is getting

    What is mary mary quite contrary expecting when the BSTU retains shallow hal as its chief legal advisor who is the bosom buddy of Fumble. Do you believe Fractured Brain Less Pimp, that naรฏve mary and the BSTU would have acted on โ€œtheir own follyโ€ without it being informed by legal advice? Poor mary has been lead down the garden path by a shallow galloping mule leaving her poor lame lambs in the Ax sheep pen.

    Were you, mary, mary, expecting Fumble to honour his commitments he made to you. He just used you mary like a simple street girl dressed in red and now abusing you the same thing he is doing to June Fowler by promising to pay back to the CLICO policyholders at least the principal amount of their investments.

  40. hAS MARY LOST HER POWER AS WELL AS HER PULCHRITUDE?

  41. So miller what is your point .mary got her objective that was the removal of broomes.however the govt took it step further which resulted in legal wrangling and interpretations of LAW questions which is the BSTU “right” to ask in seeking reslove. why haven,t you see it fit to question MIA stance on the outcome and OSA deafeaning response.after all the PM did set a path to clean up what was once a BLP fiasco left behind for ten years

  42. @Miller

    Let us see how Lime is tackled and Sir Roy put in his place like Mary.
    Would that be too political too?
    BTW, who are the lawyers for Lime and BWU?

  44. miller,
    I am now feeling very sorry for Mary. She was truly poorly advised.

    Mary obviously thought that through their legal adviser who has publicly said that he and the PM are buddies, that through this connection, she would have gotten her wish.The first wish came true when the (should we say stupid) PM met with them only. We all knew that that was very wrong but only Freundel Stuart would do something like that. Not even Sandi would have met with the BSTU only and not Jeff Broomes. And Freundel Stuart is a lawyer. Was the BSTU his only client?

    What does the outcome of this now tell you about the man Freundel Stuart? Is he a true friend or just a typical politican? Certainly the outcome has the BSTU’s legal adviser looking foolish as we know for sure that the outcome would have had Freundel Stuart’s approval. So what manner of man is Freundel Stuart?

    The BSTU certainly thought that the outcome would favour them especially with the Foundation connections in play, Mary Redman and the General Secretary Mona Robinson are Foundationers. To crown it all off, the PM insulted the BSTU when he mentioned “onewomanupship”!!!!!!

  45. @Prodcal

    r u the son without the talent? I believe ur r.

    Give Jack his jacket. AC has to be admired for her intestinal fortitude; strength of convictions, loyalty to her party and cohorts, her ability to take on all comers without retreat, and at times conceding when she is wrong. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT, SHE DOES HAVE BALLS.

    Why don’t you use your inside contacts to tell both Trottie and Fumble to stop playing the ass with this country’s fragile economy?
    If Fumble doesn’t haul The old Duke of Roy over the coals and stop him in his stupid Mary Redman-like tracks instead of Trottie shutting down the country the cruise ships and airplanes will be told that Barbados is closed for business until there is a new government in place.

    Alex McDonald is only carrying out his UK bosses instructions. He will be fired later in the year after being used to achieve C&W objectives; that is, get the East Caribbean operations ready for sale or to be completely and directly managed from Jamaica.

    Mary had an opportunity to walk aawy with a cane, but her recaltricance caused her to end up like a wounded soldier. When it was announced that Broomes et al were being transferred, she could have sized the opportunity and calim victory for the tranfer of broomes, rather than do that, she challenged the legitam of the trnafers for her members even any doo do bird would have known that she was talking foolishness.

    Look how she looks now, like a lamb to the slaughter and she wont get much support expecially in these hard economic times where people can not afford to have reduced salaries. If i were working at the cCPO’s office I will not allow them one day more than the 21 days sick leave. They wont get an extension and any excess will come from their salaries. Hit them intheir pockets. look I have nuff family that are teachers and if the foolishly support BSTU, i still support their reduction in pay.

    Go teach the people children, u dont emply your self. it is an affront to the GG to blatanly challeng his power to tranfer.

  50. AH! taking all things intio consideration mary did achieved her main goal. with the help of the PM that being the “removal of Broomes” however inthis role if powerplay everbody seem to have lost focus that the elephant in the room was removed. however as mary enters a ne .the challenges and obstacles might be a lot harder as she prpares to go up against the status quo fighting rules and laws put in place to protect but somehow has found it easier to be dismissive of laws in setting precedant
