Peter Wickham, Head of CADRES

The recent CADRES opinion poll has generated much debate and rightly so, because it has given ammunition to those – mainly BLP supporters but not singularly – who believe this DLP Government will be defeated at the next general election.  It has also caused some anxiety even to committed DLP diehards.  I will take a different view to the majority expressed on BU (Barbados Underground) and in the interest of “balance” seek to address some misconceptions.

“An opinion poll, sometimes simply referred to as a Poll, is a survey of public opinion from a particular sample.  Opinion polls are usually designed to represent the opinions of a population by conducting a series of questions and then extrapolating generalities in ratio or within confidence intervals.”  It was once said: “Opinion polls are like soup you take a spoon full and you have a flavour of the whole”.

But BAJANS know you can dip a spoon in a bowl of souse and come up with only a liquid of peppers, cucumber and onions the “meat” can be at the bottom of the bowl.

Is there empirical data from which I can draw to substantiate the view I have taken.

“The story of opinion polls.  In the 1997 [UK general election] election begins on 9 April 1992, the day John Major won the election and made fools of the polling industry.  In 1992 the four final polls, published on election day, showed the Conservative and Labour parties level pegging, as the polls had been doing throughout the campaign.  NOP and MORI put Labour slightly ahead, ICM declared a dead heat and Gallup put the Conservatives ahead by a mere half per cent, the average of the four was a Labour lead of 0.9%.  Everything pointed to a hung parliament and a coalition government.  In the event the Conservatives won with an overall majority of 21 seats, 7.6% ahead of Labour in the popular vote.”

Opinion Polls are not tablets of stone handed down from heaven, they should not be completely ignored but a measure of caution should be exercised in interpreting them.  I am not saying completely ignore the Poll because it is of no relevance.  I am making the point as forcefully as I can,  there is no reason to abandon ship and man the life boats into the turbulent and icy waters of the deep, no iceberg has been struck.

To the DLP, Prime Minister Stuart should call a WAR council, delegate areas of attack and go on the offensive, all singing from the same hymn sheet.  Focused targeting is required, when the opposition is under pressure then cracks appear.

As for the BLP sometime ago I wrote of Mia Mottley: “Your time will come” and those with undiscerning eyes may not have noticed that time might just be nearer than expected.

The Opinion Polls are only a chapter in this story, there is a long game to be played.

  1. Sinckler was placed there by DT for a reason,Stuart should have seen this and if not call general elections, reshuffle his cabinet and put Estwick as MOF. What he is now faced with is a man blowing down his neck and no time now to shift him. The reason STUART IS ALWAYS SLOW TO REACTION TO SERIOUS SITUATIONS.

  2. People are always saying that Dr. David Estwick should be Minister of Finance. What has he done to demonstrate that he is the right man for the job, other than being the spokesman on financial matters, while he was in opposition? Estwick is on record as having said that he is not an economist, and he did his research on the internet and by reading books.
Estwick was writing in the newspapers, was on the call-in-programmes and on television saying that the economy was in a debt trap, in dire trouble, and on the brink of collapsing.
Was he not at that time being a profit of doom and gloom, the same thing that all and sundry are accusing Mascoll of?

Let us be reasonable, if the economy at that time was as bad as Estwick was making it out to be, and Barbados was feeling the effects of the economic crisis when the DLP came to office, surely these two variables would have had a resounding effect on the country. Yet, the DLP is bragging about how they managed the economy so far. It does not add up.

All Estwick did was to keep a lot of noise, and maybe when a person does this, he appears to be doing a good job.

“Stuart exudes stateman like qualities and bajans prefer politicians who lie cheat and tell them what they want to hear”……………………

Like the dead king…….Mr I will not lie, cheat or steal but all the while was the biggest liar, cheater and stealer.

    ac
For the first time, I’m agreeing with you, ” bajans prefer politicians who lie, cheat and tell them what they want to hear”, this is exactly what the DLP did to win the last general elections. They lied about the corruption within the BLP ( to date NO CHARGES MADE, NO FORESENIC INVESTIGATION ), they were cheating ( DOUBT ME ASK DT ABOUT CLICO ) and they told the people what they wanted to hear, that time it was NOT just refected in the polls but also in the ballot boxes. It seems those lies and cheating has now come back to haunt them, to make matters worse the DLP don’t have the instigator to help, he long jump ship…………………………….

Excellent post, Scout. Full marks! Top of the class to you!

  5. While addressing the Canadian branch of the DLP, Thompson said that he was convinced that the millions of dollars bizarrely spent by the past BLP administration were stashed in foreign bank accounts. He went on to say that week after week in Cabinet they were discovering financial irregularities and “horror stories of how millions and millions of dollars were spent in the most bizarre of circumstances” and promised to recover all of it. To date we have not heard what procedures were put in place to recover this money and what has been the progress so far. We have heard about the proposed forensic auditing of Hardwood Housing and other government institutions, in an effort to uncover the corruption of the BLP.

Interestingly, what we heard about other financial irregularities uncovered as a result of another forensic audit.

  6. @ac….”In there/haste to make waste the yardflows still yet to adress what methods their leaderwould put in place in order to stop the ship from running aground”………………

ac, the BLP does not have to tell you anything or the DLP at this time. Have you forgotten that Chris Sinckler and Donville Inniss told the BLP in Parliament with David Thompson sitting in his seat….”we dont want to hear nothing from wunnuh, wunnah had 14 years and now is we time, we gine do things we way”…… So “this is we way” and that is why we are in the hell hole we are in today. You and Bush Tea now want the BLP to work together??? This will never happen, this is not the way Barbados politics is played.

When Owen is not in Parliament, he is busy meeting with party members putting together plans and whenever the slow man call the elections, he HAS to whether he wants to or not, the BLP will put its plans out there for the public to judge.

funny you say that, i watch the news last night and saw a Senior Officer, Sealy-Smith talking about NCF matters. i was shock, the order has been lifted now? i was told this lady is family to a MP and she is next in line for the CEO job. i asked the next logical question, why would anyone take that job when elections are around the corner and if the DLP lose, it would be clear she would be chopped. the logical answer? she will get a sweet heart deal of a contract.

this crap is to good to be made up.”…………………….

I was thinking the same thing, I heard her on the VOB newscast and then on CBC and I said wait, the ban like it has been lifted. Wow!
    The Dems are incredible.

  9. DO you want me to really answer your questions BUSHIE ???

Well I agree with your suggestion and I promise to do as you say.
Allow me to ask this question and answer it though

IS Stuart a good Prime Minister ?
    Answer: BLP =29 SEATS
    DLP=0 SEATS
    INDEPENDENT= 1 SEAT
could resist that but I will accede to your request BUSHIE

    Respectfully
    Tina
    JUST ASKING

  10. Another known glaring factoid in the poll is that Chris would whip the geriactric OSA behind how about that i know that the BLP is hoping that it would not come to such a showdown also chris would have more appeal to the youth voter Than overthe hill OSA

  11. Let’s see what the remainder of the poll will say.

  12. @Prodigal Son

Why have we not seen head to head polling by Cadres you think? Or have they been done but kept away from the public?

    @DAvid
What /who do you mean by head to head?

  14. I wonder!

Peter said the Nation has all the data, let’s see what they come with tomorrow. Peter said he had not done constituency match ups.

I understand that when asked about the poll, Chris Sinckler said, he’s keeping his phone turned off so no one can contact him.

Hey, like he really frighten of Freundel in truth, remember when he was asked about the plot, he said he did not know about it only what he read in the Nation, next week he went to a Nation’s confession session.

  15. ac,
Dont you ever get tired of repeating the same old garbage. Your PM, the man whom you support is the same age as Owen. I have never heard you refer to PM Stuart as a geriatric. In fact you should as he acts like one. He looks much older than Owen and he has never worked as hard as Owen who worked tiredlessly for14 years as PM.

The Central Bank Governor who spins the numbers for the government is over 70 years old. So who is a geriatric more than these two of your party?

It is a shame that Owen, a geriatric as you call him, has more appeal and support than your PM. Shame on you!

Chris openly said he NEVER wants to be PM not even if they drag him to it. How can he walk back those statements?? Wont he be seen as just a Damn Lying Politician……………… code name for the DLP.

  16. @observing

The reference is about the lack of a poll by constituency.

  17. ac
Chris is not even very popular among the youth down in Deacons, what would make him popular nationally among the youth? The youth voted last elections because they were paid to vote and promised much, which has remained JUST A PROMISE, I’m not sure they will vote again, the DLP does not have Clico money to give away again and the can’t offer jobs again either.

  18. Yeah prodigal what you say is garbage is all in the poll so then you also concludethat the poll is garbage you see sonmetimes you can find a nuuget in garbage However the poll is there to be tossed up and down and kicked around like a dirty old garbage can by those who choose to do so. the poll also indicates that the geriatic generation is over and youth is the way to go . challenging for the BLP out with the old farts and in with the youth the BLP is full of OLD farts

  19. OMG, no one can lift you up! You are a true Dem, the facts can hit you like a bullet between your eyes and you still wont see it.

You cannot say how Chris Sinckler can offer himself as a viable option when he said publicly he does not want it. Chris Sinckler is not all that bright you know! Think about his role in the plot and you would have to conclude he may have education but not common sense.

The game is over for him right now. He had a lot of money to buy votes in Deacons in 2008, CLICO money has dried up…gone, kapuuch… unless he can convinced the queen to open up FAMILIES FIRST coffers. He may win back but from what I am hearing, his popularity has waned in his constituency, he promised much and delivered little. If the young people go along with the Dems and their fete mentality, there you have it…he may yet win back!

  20. @ David (not BU)

“i asked the next logical question, why would anyone take that job when elections are around the corner and if the DLP lose, it would be clear she would be chopped. the logical answer? she will get a sweet heart deal of a contract.”

Did I not say the Dems were making sure their appointees were protected from getting fired with the passing of the Employment Rights Bill? But whatever became of the policy announced by Thompson as PM that CEO contracts at statutory boards were to be no longer than a political term and 6months?

  21. o.k. Prodigal but OSA also said that he was not interested in the leadership of the BLP and the rst is history, Speaking of dried up Clico money Osa also had his money in the till and that has not stopping him from trying to claim the Pm again. so there you have the facts come down almost equal on both sides with falling bricks and all now you see , Don’t get nervous what to be will be!

it took a gang of only 5 to “drag” Owen kicking, screaming and reluctantly (or so the story goes).

It would take an army of 11+ to “convince, persuade and drag Chris kicking and screaming”

can you see why it was and is easier for Owen to claim “disinterest in the crown” yet still make a “glorious” return for the good of the party and country? (or so the story goes).

Also, Chris’ rejection of desire for the throne came under extreme duress and potential embarrassment and fallout.

Rather unfortunate for him actually. If they had enough balls back in December to stand by their opinions rather than being yellow we might have been singing a slightly different tune today. who knows

  23. The bigger question is whether Chris feels he can trust the Eager 10 given that when he looked back in December not a single man was lined up behind him.

We know though that politics makes for strange bedfellows.

  24. It is folly to rely on the youth vote, not many young people are interested in politics, the only way you get the average young person to vote is by giving them money. Go all over this country right now and ask the average voting age young person who is P.M of Barbados, many would tell you they don’t know. this has nothing to do with which party is the government, many of them don’t even know who is their representative in parliament. This is an area that bothers me, when we older folkes are off the scene the younger generation is so fed-up with this politics that they are not going to get involved.

  25. Incedentally, what has become of the DLP Queen from St.John? Since the Clico thing has become big news, I hardly hear a word from her. I thought she made a big mistake by running in St. John, Yes she won big but the “kid gloves ” are off now and she has to face the heat. You know the old saying “if ya cahn stan de heat, stan out de kitchen.” I wouldn’t be surprised if I heard she’s not running again.

  26. The eager 10 havev been given a voice in the poll DO! or DIE!

  27. @ac

Can agree that they have been given a wake up message but by their public utterances they seem to have placed it on ignore. Perhaps we know better!

in reference to your post”Thou FOOL” i tink i heard the geriatric OSA trying to mumbled something about the economy only enough for his band to understand . but we still want to know in layman terms if he is going to reduced the vat in an economy with high unemployment and not enough tax revenue to pay the bills or if he is going to depend to heavy borrowing to support the economy and keep it afloat since you are his visible mouthpiece maybe you can respond.

If you were a member of the team wouldn’t you be sitting back rubbing your hands in glee dreaming of the moolah to replenish you bank account? Dreams do come true especially for some politicians.
    ==========================
But where would the moolah be coming from? They can only take if there is plenty to take from. So if they can put the country back on such good footing, then yes, i would prefer that scenario to the one that currently exist.

  30. WHY is Stuart still Prime Minister of Barbados ???

Anybody who reads this blog know that I have asked this question over and over again and that I have suggested long before the poll that Chris Sinckler should become leader and Prime Minister. I also said sometime back that the next poll due soon (this poll) would cause a big stir. The result of this poll should see the removal of Stuart as Prime Minister . It must happen. If the DLP fails to make a happen, they will be banished to the political dump forever. The DLP should really disband or Splinter. What the DLP members like Sinckler , Inniss , Jones and the lot should do is look to form another party . The DLP is done –over– finished !!!! but as is typical , they live in an ” imagined world’ and they dont beleive that it is over for them

  31. Everybody’s searching for a hero. there’s no love lost or long loyalty in the camp. There’s also no maxim leader to hold the front line together while the calvalry rides up to save the day.

If FS hasn’t done it yet, it’s virtually impossible that he can do it now. CS can’t and DI is too far down the pecking order. Just leaves to be seen how the party’ll deal with it and who they’ll look to blame afterwards.

Where are the elders and wise sages in all of this? Those seasoned hands of old that are supposed to command the strings of power and the ear of the captain. Disarray at the front usually comes from disarray or “obstinance” elsewhere.

    Time will tell.

“The DLP is done –over– finished !!!!”

this something i have been thinking about a lot. i’m starting to believe that Stuart plan is to break the DLP into little pieces. i can’t see any other reason for his actions and comments. to me he does not care about the writing on the wall. so what would be his motives? time will tell.

  33. @Zack

But where would the moolah be coming from?
    ***************

Here is a quick exercise: Look in a mirror, recognize the face staring back at you? That person is responsible for paying the the moolah directly and indirectly, so next time it won’t be about costs overruns to a foreign concern, it will be about something else you can bet on that.

Ever tried eating one potato chip? Can’t be done, you want more, and so will they.

  34. News around town is that Michael Lashley has his eyes set on being Leader of the Opposition. He is being seen all about trying to lift his national profile. He is also helping members of the Eager eleven on the ground, at least some of them whom he wants to win so that he will have the numerical support to become the Leader of the Opposition. He believes he is safe because of his big win last time around and feels that the choice of Leader of the Opposition is between himself and Ronald Jones since Mara is unlikely to run or even if she runs will be disinclined to take the job of Leader of the Opposition. He has started his lobbying. He is on the ground all around. Freundel Stuart’s days as Leader of the DLP are numbered. The plan to take him down has taken a new route. Let him self destruct they say! They are playing the waiting game and are now looking down the road.Michael Lashley is a crafty man!!

  35. Please note the comment above takes into account the assumption that based on the poll results and Michael’s own assessment as he hits the ground is that the marginal winners from 2008 like Chris, Donville and Richard Sealy will all be gone. He was seen in the City canvassing with Todd and the response was so negative that he was heard saying ” Todd gone boy”. Michael Lashley, one of the Eager Eleven plotters has given hope on Chris, his Garrison school mate, and is now breaking for himself. Another Garrison school mate of his is expected to run in St. Michael South when Freundel loses. Follow this developing story!!!

  36. That comment about Chris above should read ” he has now given up hope on Chris”

“In reference to your post ”Thou FOOL” i tink i heard the geriatric OSA trying to mumbled something about the economy only enough for his band to understand.”

We are in the same boat ac, because the other geriatric Stuart does mumble nuff words that I cannot understand.

Interestingly, during the DLP mass rally campaign at Six Roads, St. Philip on Sunday, October 15, 2006, Dr. Esther Byer-Suckoo said that this country’s middle class is now the new poor class, as persons in society could hardly afford to buy food, furthermore pay their bills. She went on to say that “Many middle class people are barely managing to pay their bills and their mortgages and they cannot buy food; the cost of medicines, car insurance, home insurance, school clothes, groceries….Every day in supermarkets all across this island, civil servants who thought that they were set for life are having to ask cashiers to put back items so that they would have enough money. Imaging the indignity.” She further outlined the problems facing the country included the expensive cost of goods and utility services and high taxes due to levies, duties and the cess. Admitting that the country was not “living in a bubble” and would be affected by a rise in prices on the world market of certain commodities, she nevertheless said that wages were not in keeping up with the cost of living. (Barbados Advocate, Tuesday, October 17, 2006, page 3).

Tell me ac, it seems like the more things change the more they remain the same.

  44. @ David & Observing

Why so much ado about Sinckler saying that he was not interested in the leadership of the DLP? It is standard practice for those who are seeking leadership to publicly state that they have no interest (or time, or desire, or need, or expectation or even love) of leadership.

The purpose of so doing, is to support the story that their qwest for power is merely an attempt to do a great public service which the country needs, and which, fortunately for all us poor sheep, they will, at the appointed hour, be prepared to make the sacrifice to accommodate us.

So you could imagine now with the DLP 2012…..Food gone up about 23.6%, road registration, land tax ,gasoline about 27 times.water ,light about 115 times, Vat 17.5 %…up 2.5% yup ac….Esther Buyer Suckoo…now swallowing air on the ways out..thanks to you know who and the increases….Adios….alot more to follow

  47. @ ac
My point was to indicate to you that persons from the party you have shown such loyalty to, were citing those ills in the society as being the main reason why there should be a change of government. However, their wish being granted, they have failed miserably in changing the status quo. Under this government we have seen an increase in every possible thing, which has the situation Byer-Suckoo stating then, as being worst now.

As it relates to the same civil servants who were promised duty free cars, VAT off first time housing and tax concessions, and all the other pie in the sky promises that were made pre-election, they have not only seen that those things were indeed only promises, but their allowances have been taxed also, along with an increase in the cost of living.
Surely, you must agree that these variable have decreased household income. If back then people were suffering with VAT at 15%, they must be suffering more so now, since food has gone 10 times as high, water increased by 60%, light bill has tripled, VAT increased to 17.5%, operational costs have increased, and these increases are passed on to the consumer.

Under these circumstances, I must ask how do you and Byer-Suckoo feel today, when people in this country are confronted by the same issues she highlighted, but in a worst way, and she and her colleagues have not been able to resolve these problems, but made the situation worst.
But knowing the DLP, your response would be either, it is because of the mess the BLP left, or the recession, or both. You never seem to want to accept responsibility, only to play the blame game.

  48. old onion bags

    My point exactly!!!

  49. Conclusion, both parties play the electorate for asses. Moving on.

  50. Today’s poll was an anti climax. It stated nothing that was not known. What we want to know is how are the head to head match-ups faring except for the two in St. Philip which are lagging of course.
