  1. BU is going with the Eugene Melnyk horse again this year, Safety Zone with Apostle as the outside pick..

  2. Hmph! Are Bajans scared that Kittitian horses will take the Cup away from here? Hmmm?

  3. David you should put some money on Grand Cash ridden by Patrick Husbands.

  4. Sorry David, seems Patrick is riding Safety Zone.

Some Barbados newspaper reporters have trouble constructing sentences and I was misinformed.

  5. Put your $$$ on Apostle…… I am being reLIEgious here!!

  6. Barbadostoday reports that one of the kittitian horses has withdrawn for the gold cup.

  7. What is the reason given for the withdrawal.

  8. I like this race . Last year the speculators were wronged. Seem this year everyone has a closed mouth on the favourite to win. any how i am going to put my bet on Rocamadour! i also like Mingun Temple giving Grand Cash a respectable place of showing in the top three

  9. See picks sheet if you want to be guided by the “experts”.

Remember we had a lively discussion last year this same time when Sterwins won which driven to the government writing off 19 million for the sport of kings.

  10. No reason was given for the withdrawal. Just states that Al portador will not be running in the gold cup instead he be running in the Spa sprint stake and trophy . page 28 of Barbadostoday March 4 2011

  11. sorry seem firefox made a mess of info that post was suppose to be under my name

  12. I enjoyed watching the race even though my favourite lost.
Good coverage by CBC online.had my Laptop connected to a 32″ lcd.
    Very entertaining.

  13. Did CBC join the race in progress because they went to a rerun of the 2010 Gold Cup?

  14. Jeff Cumberbatch Avatar
    Jeff Cumberbatch

Yes, David. I think CBC made a bit of a boo-boo. Why the re-run at such a critical time?

  15. @Jeff

Nothing wrong with the producer wanting to flashback but my gosh, the timing!

Have to disagree with Hants, the coverage was poor and did not fit the international status the race is hyped to be.

  16. Show Me the Money was disqualified after crossing Apostle, Zoom the winner.

  17. You can disagree with me and you are correct as far as foreigners are concerned.
For me, a Bajan living in Canada, it was fantastic to hear real bajans talking.
The commentators need to learn grammar but that is also de Bajan media way.
Also Jeff is correct. Somebody did the 2010 rerun at the wrong time but again I did not care because seeing Patrick on Sterwins was priceless.

So David and Jeff you are right. Bajan tv coverage sucks and is not up to North American standards.

But I still enjoyed being close to my peeps.

Breakin news. “Show Me the Money, the first horse past the post in the 30th running of the US $100,000 Barbados Gold Cup race on Saturday at the Garrison Savannah, was disqualified for impeding a rival.”

  18. Hants
The coverage of this year’s Gold Cup was the worse in history, from the interviewers to the camera men, this was soooooo unprofessional. We had Andy Thornhill, who didn’t seem to knowwhat questions to ask the patrons, to the young lady who didn’t seem to know a horse from a jockey, plus the baaad grammer coming especially from Andy. Then it was the time for the race and just before the race starts some-one decides to show last year’s race, sooooo dumb, then when they did tune in, all I was seeing was the track without horses on it, then cutting from one camera to another without proper co-ordination, the whole thing was VERY amateurish. I believe it is time we have another T.V station in Barbados, once to be a broadcaster one had to have a mass communications degree, today we have a number of persons who can’t even read properly.

  19. Gold Cup winner disqualified

    Sat, March 05, 2011 – 6:45 PM

Show Me the Money, the first horse past the post in the 30th running of the US $100,000 Barbados Gold Cup race on Saturday at the Garrison Savannah, was disqualified for impeding a rival.

Zoom, which placed second was promoted to winner. (CMC)

  20. The little Samuels boy has lots of potential but he seems to be a little cocky and that’s what cost him the race. This is not the first time that he did something stupid coming up the home straight. I knew from the time the race was complete that he would have been disqualified because what he did was dangerous, a jockey would know that a left hand whip would cause the horse to drift to the right and Apostle was on his inside, on the right and in full stride, he would he lucky if he is not fined and his youthfullness wouldn’t help him.

  21. I agree with those who say the CBC coverage was poor. They actually joined the race when it was at the halfway stage. They keep sending a bunch of clowns who don’t know much about horseracing to cover the race.

Anyway, I feel bad for young Jalon Samuels, but hopefully he will learn from his mistake. Another unfortunate situation for Apostle as well.

  22. A jockey would know that a left hand whip would cause the horse to drift to the right! which begs the question as to why the little boy Samuels would perform such a dastardly deed! when it it might caused him to be penalized

  23. @ac

I don’t believe that Samuels intended to impede on Apostle. I believe it was a mental error in not maintaining perfect balance on his horse at that point. And contrary to what some may think, not all horses drift when they come under the whip.

  24. If this was jalon’s first infraction against “tom” Trotman I would be more inclined to pass it off as a moment of youthful indescretion.
He has previously bumped Trotman as they made the turn for home amd Ithink it is time the Stewards send him a clear message that dangerous riding will not be tolerated.
    He should be fined.

  25. @The Scout,
I enjoyed the coverage of the race. It was FREE on my laptop and and I watched it on a 32″ lcd TV in my house here in Canada.
    Thanks CBC.

Scout and the critics can send your complaints to the chairman or CEO of CBC Barbados.

    Enjoy

  26. Champion jockey Jalon Samuels is a very talented youngster.

Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and carry on the brilliant start to his career.

  27. It seems o me that litle boy Samuels is an immature jockey or has intent!

  28. The jokey is a youngster who probably got over exuberant in the race, he will certainly learn from the experience, he has to if he wants to continue to do well.

  29. David you do realise the youngster is the 2010 Champion Jockey in Barbados.

I just watched the replay. Feel sorry for the youngster but he will learn that there is no need to go to the rail when you have a clear track ahead.

    Just a racing incident.

  30. Indeed Hants, he clearly lost control when he glanced over his shoulder.

  31. Hants, you realise that that is not the 2011 gold cup in your 10:41 pm post?

  32. I agree with Bupps assessement! It seems as if Samuels has other infractions. Then again he is a Champion Jockey and should have known better. The bottom line is what was he thinking!

  33. Does anybody know why Rocamadour was scratched?

  34. Unfortunate and I do feel sorry for Lord Michael Taylor, who only has the interests of racing at heart, but the horse had to be disqualified, as it clearly impeded Apostle.

Although all relevant is whather that caused Apostle a place, any place, I do not think that Apostle was beaten, even if Show Me The Money was ahead.

Apostle has a history of fighting on.

Other than that, I do hope that the grown children who object to everything learn something from the race, from the placings, that lessons can be learnt in the most unusual ways, and that none of the favoured horses eventually came in the first four.

Frivolous objections, even using technicalities, should be above grown men.

Life has a way of teaching us, it is up to us to learn.

I have nothing against these men, indeed thank them for their input to racing, but one must learn to be reasonable, at some point in one’s life.

I am a nobody in the earthly scheme of things, but hopefully something I say will ring a bell, even so.

It was a great race, many visitors there, many locals with picnic hampers, food, music, having a great time.

One person even noted to me that with how tight things are for people, it is one way to pass the time, without spending much.

  35. JALON (BOSS) SAMUEL, CHEATED I SEE NO OBJECTION AFTER WATCHING THIS RACE OVER AND OVER

  36. STOP CALLING HIM A LITTLE BOY, WOULD YOU LIKE SOMEONE TO CALL YOU AN OLD BUM, HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR THE YOUNGMAN HE’S JUST SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD I,M SURE YOU HAVE MADE MISTAKES BEFORE
LOOK AT PATRICK LAST YEAR GOLDCUP TOUCHING THE HELMET OF A RIDER BEFORE THE FINISH LINE CAN YOU EXPLAIN THAT TO US (JALON BOSS) WE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY BETTER DAYS AHEAD GOD BLESS YOU GOLDCUP WINNER

  37. Ummm, noooyerkfunk obviously has a youth issue.

Young or not, if you are racing at this level, you should have enough experience not to make such basic errors as a jockey. During a normal race, I can understand…this is a national racing event, the top of the top…you really think that that was a mistake? With a nice cash prize for the winning jockey? Hmmmm…

Plus, this is not the first time Apostle has been held back. Something is obviously going on…sabotage, maybe?

  38. There is a lot of money at stake in these races and we are not talking about at the Garrison.

  39. ac, it would appear that the old injury has caused some more hurt, thus withdrawal.

As you know, horses are a delicate athlete, the slightest thing can go wrong and often does. A foot or leg injury takes time to heal and once there is an injury, it takes a bit of luck as well as much skill to overcome.

There have been horses who (if’s and but’s) would have been almost unbeatable, IF they did not have leg issues i.e. joints or tendons or hoof.

I would go on, but people get upset if you let the world know who has what issues….they regard them as personal and unprovable.

I remember a previous Gold Cup winner that had an issue after, but was sold for breeding ($$$), owner was very upset when a reporter printed a fact on the horse…but it was from very good sources.

  40. (BOSS) JALON SAMUEL, THIS IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR YOU JUST WIPE THE TEARS FROM YOU EYES AND MOVE ON SOME PEOPLE WOULD LOVE YOU AND SOME PEOPLE WOULD HATE YOU (HATE IT OR LOVE IT YOU STILL ON TOP) AND IT JUST SHOWS HOW MUCH TALENT YOU HAVE YOU CAN RIDE WITH THE BEST OF THEM JUST STAY POSITIVE AND KEEP RIDING HARD ONE DAY YOU’LL THE BIGGEST RACE OF YOUR LIFE AND THEM YOU BE THE BEST THING SINCE WONDER BREAD, SO TAKE THE GOOD WITH THE BAD AND LEARN FROM THIS (BOSS)

  41. The race had belong to ‘Show me the Money’ Apostle WOULD NOT OF WON, and I am glad that he did not
Do any of you have any compassion, he is a youngster and a product of our society, and I am actually quite proud of him actually and in my heart and many people of Barbados hearts that Race was/ is his.
Since when St.Kitts known for horse racing study it people…
Apostle you still ain’t got no place, and that would not of let you won, your jockey clearly experienced handle him self well and you could still of gone home with second place
the boy was very very elated i would be to if i had no education and stopped going to school to run horses at the savannah
dammn white barbados and sandy lane gold cup i hope Lord Taylor does some thing

  42. No doubt Jalon is a talent in the league of Patyrick Husbands, he made a mistake which he has paid a high price. Let us give him some love and move on.

  43. brooklynnites Avatar

Please do you all know how this kid is feeling this sunday morn. come on he is just a baby riding in a mans world, the wisest man on earth Solomon made mistakes and god still love him leave the (boss) alone, one day he’ll win the biggest race in history and then you’ll love him in my opinion he won hands down, so until you can do better give him a break. From your brooklyn fans Bear and the rest of us keep good boss

  44. jack spratt | March 6, 2011 at 7:21 AM |

Hants, you realise that that is not the 2011 gold cup in your 10:41 pm post?

It was intended to show the “Patrick” in control touching the cap of his opponent as the beat him.

Jalon could be the next Patrick Husbands.

  45. Yes ! WE all learn from our mistake > However that does not mean we shouldn’t be crticised . Mistake or not it was a foolish thing to do especially in a race of this calibre. The race fans contributed to the purse and we have ever right to cal a spade a spade. This controversy brought about by his overly desire to win was not what the racing fans were looking for!

    @ friendy

I am sick and tired of all the controversy surrounding the Gold Cup year after year.
Why would a knowingly sick horse as in the case of Ramacadour be placed in the entry. THis kind of crap need to stop before the fans get sick and tired of The Gold Cup! and i have had about enough of it!

  46. @All above , Samuels is indeed a talented yongster and hopefully he continues to learn, there is no argument there. On the disqualification, no one is attacking him personally, but the rules of horseracing are clear, that when one impedes another, you are disqualified, even if you would have gone on to win or not, it is the rule of racing internationally. Lord Taylor knows this also I am sure and while it is not the nicest way to lose, it is accepted.

@ac, sometimes owners & trainers have a horse that is not 100% and we try our best, it is a person’s right to enter. The connections did withdraw the horse when they realised that he could not do what he had to, what more do you want?

You are a bit naive, and I am not being nasty. Just that many horses run with problems, sometimes if the vet who inspects, before EVERY race, sees them, he will order withdrawal.

Other problems can be hidden. Indeed, you know how athletcis has issues with use of substances, this is also the case in racing, hence why there is testing of horses, the winners and placed horses.

One thing about the Garrison and this will shock you.

It is the cleanest as you can get in racing, because the betting pool does not support a big betting culture, hence there is not a lot of money on the table, to play and cause race distortion.

The few large gamblers may bet overseas in Trinidad, but that is only a few. There would be much more scope for playing with horses if the betting pool was larger. Many who go to the Garrison do not bet, because the pool is not worth it, including myself.

This is the same thing that makes paying off jockeys etc a waste here, unless the race stake is great, which is only for the Gold Cup or Derby. In the UK a couple of years ago a TOP jockey was banned for a couple years for being involved in race fixing, so let us not get ahead of ourselves in attacking racing here, unnecessarily.

In the US, there are performance enhancers used in some states, not allowed in most parts, such as UK and here.

Lasix, which stops bleeding is used there, not here.

However, that is just to show that as with any athletics, performances are subject to the ‘rogues’ and whether they can be caught by the officials, as anywhere in the world.

It falls under the banner of something called ‘life’.

And finally, can you tell me with your utmost satisfaction that ALL Olympic Gold Medals in the past ten years are ‘clean’ of performance enhancers?

Can you tell me with your utmost satisfaction that there has not been any cricket fixing in the last ten years?

    Really?

People also gamble (if anything BIGGER) on cricket internationally!

  47. @ac @ >>friendy ,I am sick and tired of all the controversy surrounding the Gold Cup year after year.

AC, the yearly controversy has mainly been caused by the ‘grown men’ who cannot get over themselves.

The gentlemen of racing of old used to lose races, shrug their shoulders and say ‘that’s racing’ or ‘that’s life’.

No one has cheated anyone here, that is ridiculous.

As I said in my first note above.

It is a fantastic race and unfortunate that some need to be the centre of attention or get their way all the time.

In terms of the disqualification, I am confident that Lord Taylor, who loves racing and understands the rules, will abide by and continue to support racing here, which he has done admirably for the past few years, without bitching and complaining like some.

  48. @Friendly

Appreciate your input on this subject, have to confess you are turning on light where there was darkness.

Out of curiosity would you say the objection to the Kittitian horses was political or out of a genuine concern for racing safety?

What do think of the decision by the arbitration panel to stay the decision?

  49. David, one of the same Kittian entries ran last year, representing another owner, under US colors!

What does that tell you??? It is a reach to suggest safety concerns.

Note that the racing reporter in the Sunday Sun made effort to stress how well those horses loaded and acted?

At the time of objection, both the objectors had horses who were reserves, AT THAT TIME. They subsequently got in due to scratchings like Rockamadour.

There is one technicality that has to be verified and ironed out i.e. a rule relating to running from an ‘authorised jurisdiction’.

However, if that point is pushed it will make clear the intentions of the party/parties involved.

Moreover, why did the parties wait so late to lodge objections, when the word of Kittian entries was around for over two months???

It would seem that the arbitration panel did not have much time to investigate the issue, such that it was apparently postponed.

That happened to serve in the best interests of racing, such that in future other owners would not think they will be marginalised in attempts to enter here.

The forced withdrawal, if applied would probably have cost the racing here full costs to the Kittians as well as possible future lack of entries from other islands.

As it was, the race went well. The disqualification of the winner was standard racing practice.

As for the objections to the Kittians…my understanding is that racing people generally are not (to use an English term) ‘best pleased’ with the objections.

As I said, those are my perceptions only, I am a simple soul amd have no clout.

But, things have a way of working themselves out, one way or another.

  50. @Friendly

    Thanks!

Given who the objectors are what does it say? How do we weigh being competitive over the overall interest the objectors should have in the sport?

BTW where did the BTC get money to fix the roof?
