On behalf of the BU household we express our deep sadness at the unfortunate death of 11 year old Luke Bjerkhamn. Luke  was allegedly shot by his father Johan Bjerkhamn a couple weeks ago at his father’s residence. This is a matter which BU has been reluctant to offer public comment in deference to the the grieving family. However, in light of the recent development that Johan Bjerkhamn evaded police questioning by waltzing out of Barbados on a private jet yesterday, we have been driven to comment on the matter.

Firstly, there is the erroneous position which has been propagated by the traditional media that Johan  Bjerkhamn has been under 24-hour police guard at the Bayview Hospital. Our source indicates it was his doctor who played a pivotal role to keep the police from questioning Johan  Bjerkhamn. It has been said that his doctor kept him heavily sedated. Keeping him in a drowsy state the doctor was able to feed the Police the story that Bjerkhamn was not medically fit to give a statement. Why the Royal Barbados Police Force would leave  Johan  Bjerkhamn unguarded at Bayview Hospital is highly questionable.

The breakdown in communication between Commissioner Dottin and his Deputy over the recent Movada Kartel Show merits probing questions about Dottin’s competence to manage the Police Force. We suggest had the alleged perpetrator of this incident been Black the statement would have been taken and the charge laid in quick time.

Interestingly, it is Sir Richard Cheltenham who is at the forefront of this matter. Didn’t he successfully keep Jippy Doyle out of prison for almost seven years? It was reported by the media that Sir Richard accompanied Johan Bjerkhamn to the private hangar at the Grantley Adams Airport yesterday. Again, isn’t it amazing that in a very high profile Police matter we are witnessing such a  high level of incompetence by our Police Force?

We are left to speculate about what happened two weeks ago at the house of Johan Bjerkhamn. What we do know from our source is that the recent incident of gun play is not the first to have been heard by neighbours. There is the unconfirmed report that Luke was the victim of a family squabble. The question now remains, will the Royal Barbados Police Force ever get the opportunity to interrogate Jonan Bjerkhamn.

An upset BU commenter posted the following comment on the matter:

Now I shifting from BFS to Barbadians in general. I am writing this article as a chance to vent before I BLEVE . Them corrupt, nasty sorcerers who are in charge of law and security in this country , Responded to a suspicious call about a rasta man ‘in quick time’ resulting in him ending up over a cliff on sharp rocks to die some moments later.

This same security dept. took a subtle and ‘hands off’, luke warm approach to deal with a shooting death of a little boy. Questions I must ask myself,What if Mr. Bjerkhamn was driving the crash tender and his service number was 109, would he he be dragged violently from behind the steering wheel by police?

Would Mr Bjerkhamn be treated with the same ROYALTY if he was a black rasta whose son was shot? Why was he discharged and the police not notified by the hospital pending an investigation? Who gave the order to withdraw police presence creating that window of opportunity? Why is it that someone from the  health care profession not wearing HMP silver bangles? And the list goes on. My conclusion is that commissioner Dottin is a Mock face , hard face ass and he need to be removed from office like yesterday.

The white people in this country are more powerful than Castro is in Cuba. We have two laws in this country, the extreme one which serves the blacks and not so fortunate and the other customized “we would make up as we go along one” which serves the whites and people from higher echelons. Where are the Hamas and Hezbollah when you really need them?

    Instead of you all just jumping on ROK’s back & trying to classify him as racist, why don’t you try to find out from ROK the reasons behind the comments that he is making.
    Do you “bajan whites” think that even by today’s standards that you are all clean & blameless for the attitudes that you have caused the “bajan black” to adopt??
    I use the terms “bajan white/bajan black” intentionally. Why? Because if any of you think that after nearly 400 years of intermixing on this little 2×4 piece of rock that there are any “100% white or 100% black” born bajans, then, let me assure you that you live in “Wonderland”!

    Nice name. Wonder who were these people in France that extorted money from Haiti. Of course, they did nothing wrong in extracting this money. They had a right, right? What does Haiti have to do with white people? Come on, I know that you know better than that. Read the latest news, especially from the UN.

    You think that if Haiti was white country that France would have seen a red cent? Remember the story of the Boston Tea Party? Effectively the white people who took over USA from Britain stopped the money from going to Britain. Not one red cent did Britain get for so-called reparations or compensations.

    Let me say, your white people came on here to make me look bad. If it was you, what would you do? Not try to make them look bad too. The only difference is that they try to insult me to make me look bad while all I did was point to what they did and are doing. If that makes them look bad, well then, it was all of their own doings. As we old people would say, lie down where you make up your bed.

    I went to a near, all black secondary school, I came into school and was hated immediatly because i was white. I was 11 years old, should i be cursed for life because of what my fore fathers have done? Are black bajan’s like yourself so narrow minded as to not see what is infront thier own eyes? Change. At 11 years old what could i have possibly done wrong? i was not racist i accepted black people as friends but there were those who just would start hating because of my skin colour. Why is it at 11 years old, black teachers showed preferencial treatment to black children rather than equality among all? Why do black people think its right to call people by the colour of their skin but when white people return the favour its racist? Why is it that you can immediatly curse a child for his skin colour when he is innocent? Curse history if you have something to curse don’t bring the present into it. Don’t make history determine your actions. When a white man kills a black man it’s a racist attack. When a black man kills a white man it’s a typical crime? Ignorance is bliss amongst racists.

    Good intervention as usual. Of course, we dealing with the white elites. I can tell you that those white people that are conscious are ashamed of what their white Governments are doing.

    I had a conversation about Haiti with a white American mother who donated heavily to Haiti. When I showed her the reports coming out of Haiti and the one on CARICOM governments being refused landing; and the one by the Doctors Without Borders complaining about refusal to land supplies, the woman almost fainted.

    All she kept repeating is, “you mean that our media telling lies?” Of course, I did not know what she was seeing on her TV in the USA. All I could do was present her with the information I had at the time. At first, it looked like she felt embarrassed but then she turned red and abruptly, but quietly, took her leave. She just could not take it.

    I therefore agree with you when you speak of Bajan white / black. What I am speaking about is very peculiar to Barbados, although I have been hearing many returning nationals from Britain say that it is the same (or probably worse) in England. All I will say is that I dealing with Barbados.

    Did you know that white Bajans feel unsafe in places like Nelson Street and Chapman Lane? Why do you think that is so? A guilty mind? White people have no need to fear those areas. I am planning to take one into those areas soon, so that he could see the plight of black people. He has agreed too. I hope that he don’t come out sick; he may throw up. To tell the truth, I think that he is one white that can take it. He has good spirit.

Why was I made to go and buy white boys lunch and made to stand and wait until they were finished to take back the bottles to the tuck shop and bring back their refund; all before I could get my own lunch?

    Why was it that a white boy would stake you out in one place and allow the entire lunch time to pass so you don’t get to play with your friends or even buy lunch sometimes?

    Exactly what did I do wrong at 10 years old, Sir?

    Scout, et al, I find it interesting that you purport to know what “white people” think and feel. Are you basing this on history, as in the past, or the few bad experiences you may have had in the present with white people? If you are purporting to know what ALL white people think or feel then I would have to say that you don’t and that your statement lacks credibility or common sense.

So because of you problems as a youth it has stemmed into you becoming such a racist? i had problems as a youth but the difference is that was 7 years ago. I got dragged up stairs flights of stairs. And had to teach myself some of my own work because teachers had problems with my colour and wouldnt stop to explain if i misunderstood. Yet i am no racist, i have an abundance of black friends. Do you know why? “Life is to short to be living with regrets, forgive and forget.”—

    Sometime ago Peter Simmons called the talk show and spoke to some of the troubling behaviour practiced in his day at the Lodge School. Yes we have come along way and while we don’t have the overt behaviour which was practiced in the 50s and 6os, the legacy of that period lingers in how business is done and how the social landscape is presently constructed. Wasn’t there a report prepared for the UN a few years ago which outlined the semblance of crypto-racism in Barbados?

    Barbados continues to be very much a segregated society, not in a blatant way but obvious enough. What we need to do is to discuss it before we reach the stage where we need to address it by setting up race relations committees.

    I am and never was a racist. I felt the stinging blow of racism and what you felt was just the reverse 45 years later; well 37 years later for you.

    Contrary to what you think, I don’t walk around with any chips on my shoulders. Any white man that knows me, knows that I don’t. You mistake me coming here and speaking the truth for venom that I carry. You are mistaken, so you have no lessons for me as far as that is concerned.

    The last white man that I got into a heated discussion with over the plight of my Bajan people will tell you that I dealt with the facts not with racism. I went and did the research to show him what I was saying and I don’t mean read books, I mean that I went out there with a questionnaire in five low-income communities.

    I shared some of that information later at the Electricity Hearing too. Did you see our closing submission? Among other things, it gave reasons and showed evidence why those at the bottom should not receive an increase in rates and that the block should be expanded from 100 to 200 kwh/month. We recommended that those in that usage group should have no increase.

    Note too that the FTC accepted the evidence and met us halfway at 150kwh. For a court to accept that evidence it would have had to have been persuasive.

    Let it be known that I am dealing with facts, not hearsay or second-hand stories. You have no idea of the plight of many Bajans. Imagine that an average of 60,000 Bajans low income workers, earning below $500.00/week support 180,000 members of this population (including themselves) of 280,000. Do the mathematics and see that when you divide 500 by 3, you come very close to the poverty line for each member of the family.

    Of course, the reality is that many households are overcrowded, doubling, tripling and quadrupling the average. Furthermore, in those communities, the smallest unemployment rate was 33% and the highest 47%. Yet, the overall unemployment rate at the time was about 12%.

    Yes, facts. Tell me about them. Have you done any research?

    Thank you for that response. I wonder why a black man would mug you? I see, he perceives that you have money? OK. As I said, the bed you make up, lie in. Am I to be sympathetic to you? You got away light. When you were stealing from us it was rape, cruelty and death for us. Sport and profit for you.

    Do you think you got mugged simply because you are a white man? Black men mug black men whom they think have money the same way, so what are you telling me that the black man is racists? Or are you saying that only a Black man would mug you? Is it expected because he was black? Or was it because he wanted money and knew for sure you had some?

    In any case, you know that all you had to do was go to an ATM and get more. Did that mugging stop you from having something in your house for breakfast. Did it put you back on your mortgage or car payment? Well then, what was the harm done?

    When a white Bajan emphatically states there is no racism in Barbados; then I find it difficult to give any merit to his further statements. If he says there was a lot of racism in Barbados in past years, there is not as much now but it has not been completely eradicated…and still impacts on the lives of many Bajans. I can agree with him on that.

    Barbados is changing, not only in its topography but in how people think and the conclusions they come to, based on their personal experiences. This is tied in to how they express themselves. In this new dynamic some people feel uncomfortable and they look around for people or entities to blame. Some choose racism with which to label those who speak out.

    That is an error of judgement they have made.

    For in their efforts to castigate black individuals, they choose racial slurs and thus put a barrier between them and a Black audience, the result making a bad situation worse.

    When you say people are “ignorant” and “idots” how can they be receptive to anything you say? When you write of people not being educated and bemoan Barbados literacy to make a point.

    I say there is a difference between a person being literate and being “functionally illiterate”.

    I rarely use personal names in my posts but in this case it makes the point of truth. In the 1950s a single white boy named Robert Walton attended my school in Barbados, he was the only white boy I was aware of in the school.

    He was treated with kindness and affection by teachers and pupils alike. I have often wondered what became of him.

    I hate the fact that black people of this country constantly seem to think that white people are running the show. You know what ROK, answer this question, do you think personally, that you would ever come to ease with all this racial tension? With your ever persisting ways to show that the white the man is wrong and that the white man gets special treatment, this is not going to bring about any peaceful resolution. Open your eyes, the Barbados government is black, police force is black, so in reality white people are under the black power if you want to look at it from the point of view. You argue from the past, and that is grudge that you have to let go as well as many others in Barbados, and let me tell you this, white people have opened their homes to me, and if it not for them I would not be a abroad studying, because my family could not afford it. Also the generation of youth today in Barbados is a more combined one, if you have not noticed.

    With my apologies before hand, if I may please reflect one of my personal experiences as a youth at school…

    It was grade five, I would have been eleven, attending school in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

    Half way through the school year, a Black boy suddenly appeared in class (the first Black in our class, but not our school). His family had just moved to Victoria from Barbados.

    He sat beside me for the rest of the year.

    He was a very cool, and very smart, individual.

    And he was treated as an equal by all the other students, and by the teachers (at least, as far as I observed).

    But then, being Canada, we already had Whites, [East] Indians, Chinese and Indigenous Peoples in our classroom. So a “Black” individual was simply an individual with a different colour of skin, in our minds.

    Not anything significantly different than a different hair or eye colour….

    I am sure by now that you have seen the difference in the mentality in Barbados. Many times in working together you have asked me “why not?” on certain matters… but the point is, when you ask me that, I see a totally different individual who expect that people should enjoy rights across the board.

    Please be assured that the answers to your “why not?” make me cringe but I give you the reality and I believe that over time you have seen what I am saying.

    That is why I keep saying we are speaking of Barbados and every time I write “white” I am not going to prefix it with Bajan. I can only write about my experiences here, I have no idea what it is elsewhere as I have never lived overseas long enough to be anything more than a student.

    Yes, white people acknowledge what has happened in the past, but it is not longer happening. Slavery has been abolished! Life is very different, I may be a young man but I have done many years studying history, and I know for a fact life has changed for black people in Barbados! Black people can attend any secondary school they wish and many other things which I do not have time to list.
    Are you trying to say that there are still house slaves in Barbados? Do you mean a maid? Who by the way is paid, that means it is not slavery! You claim that poor people are still treated badly by the civil service… The civil service in Barbados is about 95% black people so I’m not sure how that is racism by whites and if you claim its slavery then your claiming that black people in Barbados are enslaving other black people. Again your ignorance, a bank will not grant a loan if you cannot show you can repay it, that would make them as ignorant as you. That same scenario is the reason why there was the credit crash in the United States. How is that white people get what they want? I would love to know! You seem to think you know so much about white people… What is it that they want Mr. King? You know as well as I do that a white bajan would never be elected as prime minister of Barbados, and it is the black people of Barbados who make up more than 80% of the population who control the votes in Barbados, so if what you claim was true why is it that they keep voting in a white fearing Government?
    The pressure is on because a bank is a money making organisation, if you had any education in economics you would know that… As I said, if you can’t repay a loan or make the payments necessary then the bank will reposes. Failure to do so is not only against the law but it is also (like previous stated) the reason for the credit crumble in the United States. White people do not encourage racism. You wouldn’t know because you were not raced in a white family and by the sounds of it you were not raced around many white people or you would be more knowledgeable.

Is it because there are more poor black people in Barbados than whites that you say there is racism? If white people like white people so much and hated black people, why is it that they have not brought all the poor white people (mainly found in St. John) to the south and west coast and put them in big houses with nice jobs? I will ask again! What modern day example is there of a white person inflicting those things on blacks? None! All the businesses in Barbados owned by whites employ black people do they not?

Bussa did not end slavery, the white man did. White people learned from their mistakes and realised that what they were doing was wrong, and ended slavery. That was 176 years ago! Slavery is over and there have been many generations of both white and black people who over time have both changed and have tried to move on from the what has happened in the past.     You claim to be a “conscious black man that knows whites inside and out” well you don’t seem very conscious because nothing you have said recently on this thread has reflect properly on society. You generalise and act like this discussion is taking place 200 years before today! How can you claim to know whites inside and out if you are a black man? Use your brain! You were not raised in a white home and from your statements obviously did not grow up with a close relationship to any white people. You have made up so many falsehoods in the past 2 days, its astonishing! You obviously heard those stories second hand, from someone who shares the same racist beliefs that you do! If you knew the white community so well you would know that it is fairly small, being the minority in Barbados and that story would be well known among white people. Either that story is a foreign story, a really old story or just made up. Do you think that if a racist black man who is not very open minded or knowledgeable heard that story that a lot of white people would not have heard it? Again ignorance… You want me to ask “those who started it and put us through 400 years or incessant cruelty for which today, there is no kind of remorse from them.” I am sorry but I cannot, since those people are all dead and gone and a totally different generation in which slavery does not exist is not in existence.
    White people do not disown it. They simply acknowledge that it was not their fault but the fault of their forefathers and that it does not exist today. White and black children today attend the same secondary schools and the same university, in which white people are still in the minority and being taught by black teachers who could easily share the same racist beliefs as you. You ask any white person with money if they have a degree and they will tell you yes! Education is the reason why any white person who is rich, is rich. If not for their education they would have no money and that is a fact.

    Fact: Are you aware that Jamaica has the 2nd most Mercedes Benz per capita in the world, after Germany? Even though the population is 92% black? I’m guessing those black people used to own slaves too and that’s why they are driving the cars they are driving.

    Your arguments are seriously flawed. Slavery is alive and well in Barbados, contrary to what you think.

    The problem is that we are really tired of you saying one thing when the reality is different. So not many black people willing to take you to task, when you come up with foolish arguments like Black people in government and in the Police so white people are not racist. What BS!

    Not only are your arguments puerile and simplistic, they are unworthy of answers because they lack context; ridiculous!

    Who by the way is being paid so it is not slavery? Stupse. That is the kind of thing you get on with. Because they are paid they are not slaves? Well slaves had a cost too, and quite frankly, the Massa had to feed them, house them and keep them healthy to the fullest, not give them $200 a week that can hardly feed one, far-less a family. So it even dreader now that they are being paid. We call them slave wages.

    Another one right behind that: “You claim that poor people are still treated badly by the civil service… The civil service in Barbados is about 95% black people so I’m not sure how that is racism by whites…”

    Yeah, washing your hands clean, nuh? You fail to recognise that racism is institutionalised. Furthermore, on the one hand you say that you recognise that slavery happen, but on the other, you are denying that the effects of slavery still exist in both the minds and institutions of former slaves.

    How then can you expect answers from me on such fundamental issues when you have not demonstrated that you know or even understand the dynamics? You think that slavery done and the issue done there. Give me a break. After 400 years of conditioning? They say it takes twice as long to recover.

    Nothing that you have written seriously addresses the issues and I am not prepared to do anymore than I am doing now; which is to try to poke some facts at you… but yuh head hard or you playing that it hard.

    That is why one man get robbed.     Tell me something. If I came up with an idea. You financed the idea. Do you think we should share profits 50-50? Not you. The money is more than the idea, right? Without the money it would remain an idea, right? And you know what you will tell me, “well if it was not your idea it would be somebody else idea that would want less”; any which way how, you would make your profit, so I have to take what I get from you or starve, right?

    Yet, you do nothing wrong. Ever heard of social injustice? Well that is what you do wrong and social injustice can be even more cruel than physical torture because it plays on your mind and it renders the victim as less than a person. It kills slowly, painfully and surely; first the personality and then the body.

    I have not even gone into matters of diet, nutrition and disease, which is another torment for the amputation capital of the world, Barbados.

    I am not believing you for one minute. First, I am sure that he did not walk with his mortgage or car money. What he walked with is what he knew he could throw away and don’t feel it. He may have intended to spend all on drinks but it was just too much and some left back, so the robber got the pickings anyhow.

    Even if he did walk with his responsibility money, all that may happen is that he may sacrifice a little, but you can be sure that his family has the wealth to prevent any drastic calamity. Remember we talking about Barbados, yuh hear?

    We talking about Barbados? I have seen many poor and underprivileged whites, but not in Barbados. You need to understand wealth. If a white man in Barbados is poor, that is probably because he got ostracised by his own.

    However, even a poor white man in Barbados is privileged. Check COW. You think he could be where he is today if he was black? He come along and overtake Rayside… and right now is on more solid ground than Rayside.

    Remember that a one-eyed man is king in blind man land.

    Chris, I want to tell you a story (about myself). No doubt it will make you even angrier.

    Years ago after university, when I was in my 20s, I was a beach-bum hobi cat sailor- I just loved the water- to surf, to scuba dive, anything at all to do with water. I used to take the tourists out sailing on my boat for hourly/half hourly rates.

    After about a year, one night in a bar that I used to hang out in all the time, as usual I was chatting with Miles, who was an engineer but had a ski boat that Bert used to work for him.

    I don’t know why he turned around to me on that specific night, after the many nights we drank there together, and said, “You just keep on floating around out there; one day you’ll wake up and be floating out there and all the rest of us will have moved on, while you’ll be in the same place. You’re wasting your time…”

    I was mad at him, didn’t understand what he was telling me. Many years later I’m grateful to him- the intial anger and hurt of what he said has gone, and gratitude has taken its place.

    A few months later I grabbed a lucky temporary job teaching for someone on leave at a public school, gave the boat over to a friend and had 1 1/2 incomes.

    Chris, I really have no hate for you, I only wanted to tell you that story. I’m not trying to hurt you. I know you’re not about $$$. I respect that.

    Since you are such an ignorant and uneducated man, I feel it necessary to define the word slavery as you must have a small vocabulary and are searching for a different word… Slavery (also called thralldom) is a form of forced labour in which people are considered to be the property of others. Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand wages. So get your facts straight or give an example of slavery in Barbados at the moment, as I said the only slavery going on in Barbados is mental slavery and that is where you are stuck since you are still living in the past.

    I never said that the reason white people are not racist is because the Government and Police are black. Again making up falsehoods! But if black people are in Government and make up the police force and give white people preferential treatment (as you claim) then why is it that you are not attacking black people? Since it is black people giving the preferential treatment!
    No, you just don’t have the answer… That’s the real reason, or you would have answered them… All my arguments give proof and are so strong that you have still not made an attempt at answering them but instead would rather make up excuses why you have not.
    Again you display your ignorance sir, slavery and wages cannot be placed in the same sentence since the very basis of slavery if the deprivation of wages! I will agree that Maids are low wages but they are paid minimum wage, this is because minimum wage is normally the wage given to someone who is supplying unskilled labour. I think you seem to be a advocate of socialism because you expect for people to be given more than they are due… If you have a problem with the minimum wage that exists now, why don’t you give a call to David Thompson?

In an earlier comment you brought up the Egyptians and what they have done… Are you unaware of the fact that Egyptians were among the first to implement slavery? Are you unaware that slavery was occurring in African before any white man came there to collect them and bring them to the Caribbean? Are you unaware that slavery is still in physical existence in Africa? All of those slave owners in these mentioned scenarios are BLACK SLAVE OWNERS! The problem I have with you ROK is that you are not arguing that slavery was bad but instead are arguing that white people are bad because the slavery that occurred almost 200years ago in this country was by white people. It is black people in Barbados that are implementing slavery on their own not white people! When was the last time you saw a white person as Prime Minister of Barbados? Most black people unlike you have moved on… I can bet that if you have a granddaughter you allow her to straighten her hair. Do you know where that originated?
    It only takes twice as long to recover if it’s preached by ignorant people such as yourself. Every generation since slavery has had a change in its social structure you somehow seem to be stuck in a generation to which you do not belong and have not grown up in the previous generation so are unable to knowledgeably comment on the issue at hand properly.

    I have one granddaughter who is under the control of her mother and if her mother is foolish enough to straighten her daughter’s hair, that is her business. However, I have a daughter growing up under my roof and I doubt that she would ever ask me to straighten her hair and if she does, I will tell her to wait until she can make that decision for herself.

    Well John, what makes you think I hate white people. This is the real problem with you people on this thread because if we were making points face to face, you would not tell me that because it would be obvious that I do not hate white people and may just be venting; and not violently either.

    But as soon as anybody has to get up and speak their minds or speak out for their rights, it means that they are your enemy. All the time you jucking out their eyes, it was OK, but as soon as you refuse to let them juck out your eyes anymore it becomes a problem.

    Is that not the way of a demon? Is that not the way of a slave master? Is that not the way of a bully?
