The Nation, Sunday 9th on page 4 quotes Betty Cathrow project manager speaking for Bjorn Bjerkihamn as saying that before the fence was erected she and Bjerkhamn drove around Road View researching the area and had determined the the residents could use what she called “the original access” at Sweet Home Gap. She said they were unaware that the road was actually a resident’s property.

Ooh boy!!! Where shall I start?

Mr. Bjerkhamn has been in the construction business for maybe 40 years. And can we presume that Cathrow is well qualified for the job she is holding?

Surely Bjerkhamn knows and Cathrow ought to know that the correct way to establish linemarks is not to drive around researching. One cannot establish linemarks by “driving around researching”. One estabishes linemarks by PAYING a land surveyor to find and mark the legal landmarks.

Surely a construction magnate and his project manager would know this?

Recently I needed to establish the line marks for a piece of property that had always been described as 100 caneholes. I paid a land surveryor the going rate $1,800 to find and mark the landmarks and while he was doing so to establish that the land is 2,500 square feet. The $1,800 is probably more that the land is worth since it is in zone one, but the only way to avoid doing an injustice to one’s neighbours is to do the legal and right thing.

In another case before repairing and replacing 40 feet of galvanized (steel) paling for an elderly relative I had to find the proper landmarks.

Again the ccorrect process was taken. During that process it was discovered that the original paling was incorrectly sited in favour of the elderly relative. The new paling was drawn in to the correct landmarks and the piece of land 40 feet by 6 feet, and a fruit tree was returned to the neighbours to whom it properly belonged.

Surely wealthy construction magnates do the same?

Truthfully it ain’t that hard to do the right thing.

  2. It would be interesting to hear of our laws pertaining to use of land as “right-of-ways”. In the UK where most of our common laws are/were based, farmers and other land holders were not entitled to stop persons from crossing their lands, if those lands were use, as right- of- ways for a period of time by person.

  3. This just goes to show that some rich people don’t give a rat’s ass about the poor people around them.
Not even extending common courtesy to inform them of the change that is going to affect them.

The DLP must not let this sort of thing happen under their watch.

  4. Well he is managing quite a few government contracts. though i don’t think they are going to say a word about this.

Hants, the DEMS are not going to touch Bjerkhamn, not even with a 40 ft pole!

Multi-millionaire Bjerkhamn is the prospective new general elections financier, now that the CLICO gravy-train has dried up.
Bjerkhamn has been courted to bed with that super deal at “The Villages” Coverley, and nough, nough, NHC work that suffering small Barbadian builders could be doing …… all of this “a la House Minister Lashley style.”

Don’t feel like regurgatating all of those details right now, but you must have heard of the SWEET, SWEET, SWEET, sweet-heart deal, whereby the Bjerkham Group will end up with a billion dollars in profits. And don’t forget that big set of Government land PRACTICALLY FREE to boot.

Allegedly, part of the first stage reciprocation by Bjerkham was to wine and dine Lashley in Florida after going there Private Lear Jet style, and bringing home I hear, one big flat screen HD TV for Lash’s personal use.
You think these “squeaky clean” people easy?

  6. David, pardon my off topic submission, it will be brief:

“Religion of peace’ launching ‘ferocious’ attacks”
Worshippers targeted in Egypt, Iracq, Nigeria, Russia
    Posted January 07, 2011

Editor’s Note: The following report is excerpted from online newsletter published by the founder of WND.

“It was only six days after the 9/11 attacks that President Bush described Islam as a religion of peace specifically saying ‘Islam is peace,’ but the Religion of Peace website reports that for 2010, there were 1,987 Jihad attacks in 46 nations resulting in 9, 175 deaths and 17, 436 injured.”

“So analysist are expressing alarm that individual attacks on Christian churches are being replicated rapidly and appear to be reflecting a new wave of Islamists’ war against any stability in the Middle East.”

  7. Interestingly, WorldNetDaily, also recently reported,

    “Christianity taking over planet?”
    Posted December 11, 2010.

“What is the fastest-growing religion on Earth?”

“Most evidence suggest it is Islam”
“But the evidence suggest a new, or, perhaps, original form of biblically inspired evangelical Christianity is sweeping through places like China, Africa, India and Southeast Asia – making it by far, the fastest growing faith on the planet.”

“In ‘Megashift’ author Jim Rutz coins a new phrase to define this fast-growing segment of the population. He calls them
‘core apostolics’ – or ‘the new saints who are at the heart of the mushrooming Kingdom of God.”

“Rutz makes the point that Christianity is overlooked as the fastest growing faith in the world because most surveys look at the traditional Protestant denominations and the Roman Catholic Church while ignoring Christian believers who have no part of either.”

“He says there are 707 million ‘switched-on disciples’ who fit into this new category and that this ‘church’ is exploding in growth.”

Its like Jesus said, He would:

“….I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall NOT prevail against it.” (Matt. 16: 18b) emphasis added.

Day does run until night catch it.
Bjerkhamn is only doing what other less prominent landowners have been doing all over Barbados. Everyone is fighting to secure their little piece of the rock and could not care less about any inconvenience caused to their neighbours in the process.

The authorities, including parliamentary representatives, in most cases, have been unable to use moral suasion to rectify these cases when landowners has exercised their legal rights. The only resolution is for the Government to compulsory acquire the land that has been used as an access.

The question is why, if they actually do, does the T&CP allow the sale of landlocked plots and why do persons buy them?

  9. Zoe
Don’t try changing the topic, this is too important to bajans in general and Road View residence in particular. St Peter’s Bay has caused much flooding in Road View where the contractor was allowed to alter a natural watereay and now force water to find alternative ways to the sea.this has resulted in one young lady with a thriving business to shut shop because of constant flooding everytime it rains heavily, many other residence in the area are being effected. This is not the first occasion that this project has marooned residence in the area without notification, other residence were treated the same way. It appears that the DLP has just run with the baton that was handed to them by the BLP who started the race. This trend must not be allowed to continue as if a precedent is set, it will be hard to stop the onslaught on the rest of Barbados , hence bajans. We bajans MUST tell BOTH parties that this country is still ours and they don’t have the right to sell us out for personal gain.

  10. These kinds of cases which involve rich people versus poor, one would expect with the abundance of lawyers in Barbados a few of them would try to make their reputations on these types of cases.

  11. I.R. Nottobright Avatar

I think the rich would have consulted some of those same lawyers before proceeding with their plans.
Rich people do not like to spend foolish money.

  12. David,
These are the types of issues politicians should be fighting irregardless of who giving them money, but unfortunately we don’t have any with enough backbone to fight.

These types of people come in here and because they spend a little money investing think that they have a right to do what they like, and not even the yellow belly, hand to mout, spineless politicians does say a word.

what do we elect them for to line they pockets with kickbacks?

They are willing to sell us out, so long as they can get something off the deal.
When will this thing stop. They say when a rat is cornered he turns and attack.

  13. I R Notobright

Bjerkhamn is only doing what other less prominent landowners have been doing all over Barbados

Precisely!! I keep reading about cases where many “average” Bajans have been blocked or have severely restricted access to their homes by other “average” Bajans who have placed impediments e.g fences; boulders etc.

Bjerkman makes a good target because he is rich and well connected but we should all be protesting at each and every instance when this occurs.

I think that our ire in these cases should be directed at successive Gov’ts; the TCP and the seemingly “slap dash” approach to land use and construction in the country.

  14. It ain’t that hard to do the right thing.

And it ain’t that hard for any political party to raise campaign money from ordinary Bajans. Ordinary Bajans are very, very generous (if you doubt me ask the churches) But politicians never ask ordinary Bajans for money and I am still not sure why.

Whichever party that finds a effective way to collect money $20 at a time from tens of thousands of ordinary Bajans will be the party that leads.

  15. Did you not see what the Bjerkhman people doing to the residents up by Coverley who were there long before them. They blocked the roads up there, put up humps to damage the small business owner trucks and they have created a man made swamp that is causing problems for the residents. One Maloney man turned up when the Nation was there and cursed the business man Mr Greenidge stink.

Mr Greenidge said he spoke to the Chief at MTW who said he gave no permission to erect road blocks or to put humps in the road, he promised to get back to Mr Greenidge and never did. The minister, the ape Lashley said he knows nothing of it. TCP has to do better and stop letting white moneybaggers do as they like with our country.

When I was building my house, my lot was on a corner and the Chief Town Planner held my plans up for months because he insisted that I could not put an entrance on the front of my property and told me he cared nothing about my security when he is doing his planning. In the end, the architect removed the entrance just to get the plan approved. Needless to say, I lived to see the day when he was moved from TCP.

Bjerkham is now the cash cow for the Dems so they can do as they like. Did you all know that since the BLP highlighted the sweet deals they got at Coverley, you cant enter the place to see the construction, a guard now tells you you have to go online and make an appointment to view the houses!

  16. Well!Well! It looks like the majority of people who live in this land now need to lobby for “Minority Rights”. Only in South Africa……….or Barbados.
Perhaps we need a Minister of Native Affairs.

  17. What do you expect, isn’t this the same Bjerkham Dynasty that was involved in a murder, then allowed to move to USA to live without even a farced trial? Then we would see Int news and cry shame on other countries for the way they administer justice in their country.

  18. Bjerkham who allegedly shot and killed his son didn’t move to the USA; he only went there for medical treatment. He currently lives and works right here in Barbados. As a matter of fact he’s in charge at Coverly!

  19. “Bjerkham allegedly shot his son”
    Oh really!
Experienced gun dealer cleaning a loaded gun.
    LOL.

  20. I have always heard that Barbados was referred as Little South Africa. Bjerkhamn should know better since he has been on this island most of his life. I really can’t believe that he would do such a thing and expect to get away with it.

  21. why can he not get away wid it Islandgirl?
this is Bimshire where de white ppl do as they like and you know what. none uh wunna gine do a damn ting cause wunna like um so
    stupse

  22. Yip, true “experienced gundealer cleaning a loaded gun”. However, still allegedly. Have you heard of any charges against him, does anybody know whether he appeared in court……….? I haven’t.

  23. Rich people will get away with this because Government allows them to……..

Government in Barbados is afraid, scared, frightened that requiring rich people to do the right/legal thing will create publicity and cause foreign governments to put a squeeze on Barbados!!!!

  24. This group is now the cash cow for the DLP, remember CLICO coffers are empty now and have been put under judicial watch only after certain people got out their monies. Remember the pleas of PS Layne to put the company under judicial management and Thompson would not.

Remember, Thompson was pictured in the Nation saying that he asked the DPP for a full briefing on the matter after public outrage over how the Bjerkhams complained about police presence at Bayview.

Don’t you think it strange that a PM would get involved in a straight police matter if he did not have an ulterior motive? It is quite obvious to any person that there is something funny in this matter, why would a gun dealer clean a loaded gun and why would he wait to do it at the weekend when his child was visiting? Don’t make sense.

  25. Wait! You telling me that is the same Bjerkhamn who is in charge at Coverly and who is responsible, with the Ministry of Housing ,and the Town Planning blessings in blocking of first an old public road between Searles and Charnocks, and then again paving one end of the same road and blocking access to two businesses in the area, namely Legall’s Ready Mix and Greenidge Block works?
And I wonder who was responsible for the sabotage done to the same Legall’s expensive electronic ready mix cement batcher. Word has it that the van seen in the area at the time, was registerd S , and painted in two of our national colours, not including blue.

  26. @ Nationalist
The very same Bjerkham, feeling no pressure.

  27. I,m lo0king for some pressure to be put on those residents of Six Mens too. Remember , Bjerkman said he wants to develop the west coast to look like a mini Monte Carlo. That can’t be done with blkack faces peeping over the fence of the rich and famous, therefore, we will be resited to the hinderland, away from the weathy. Modern day apartheid, like in South Africa, the black man selling we out.

  28. Politicians dance to whatever tune the business community chooses to play. Historians will debate whether they were corrupt, cowardly, or merely stupid.

  29. Kudos to BU for assisting in putting pressure on the Bjerkham Clan to remove the enclosure in Road View. Once again BU thanks for your help.

  30. @The Scout

Let us thank the Nation for highlighting the story. BU added a voice along with the Facebook posse.

    Don’t fool though.

  31. I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading incredibly slow for me.

Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end?

I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.
