In a preamble to my current book manuscript on the issue of โ€œrace relationsโ€ entitled โ€˜Unmasking The Phantomโ€™: The Race Factor โ€“ Exposing The Problems Of Race Relations In America – it dawned on me based on a recent documentary by a very highly respected Black British journalist that this was the one area that I had not given enough academic resonance to, due in part to the dangerous minefield that has been created around this incendiary narrative.

Race and IQ have created many enemies across the academic as well as the social divide. The most damaging and soul-destroying accusation that can be levelled at any human being is to be classified as sub-human because of a range of numbers on an IQ sliding scale (reference made to the Australian Aborigines).

But first let us examine the social anthropology and the ethno-genesis on this questionable area of science which posits this notion of a hierarchy of intelligence between the โ€œracesโ€ while creating a subjugation of the Black race, relegating them to the furthest end of this ideological spectrum.

There are many questions to be answered by social scientists, social policy experts and politicians who continue to bury their heads in the sand over this contention issue โ€“ most of them wanting to play the political correctness game as a form of appeasement.

For example, in Britain, the US and Canada โ€“ predominate 1st world countries where with an increasing Black population – can governments and policy-makers continue to overlook the escalating problems of Black underachievement in schools and an increasing marginalization of Black males who are jobless, incarcerated, disillusioned and teeter-tottering on the periphery of society resulting in sub-cultural strands of behaviour and exploitation defined as a โ€œhip-hop, Gen-ex generation?

But before I begin to rant about the structural inequalities and the social transmogrification of opportunity based on privilege, class and elite meritocracy โ€“ let us go back and look at the paradigms of social anthropology and how the narrative and the dialogue on racial IQ and intelligence became such a medium of contention and how the dumming down of this issue even within academic circles is seen as intellectual terrorism – where the use of the enemy is not a suicide bomber who straps plastic explosives to a vest but rather uses the corollary of subtle genetic science to plant incendiary devices within the minds of groups of people to maintain an ongoing status quo.

In one of the earliest documented records of ideas on race, we find in the writings of Herodotus, the ‘father of History’ – writing approximately 440 B.C.E. where he researched marvellous histories of people such as Egyptians and Ethiopians describing many Africans as having black skin and wholly hair. But on occasion, he refers to people that were not Greek – mainly yellow and black people, as “barbarians.” However, it should be noted people of other cultures at that time also regarded those not of their own group as barbarians.

The scientific and academic avenues of inquiry on intelligence according to race have been studied from numerous angles โ€“ for example, Psychology, Epidemiology, Statistics, Phrenology, Palaeontology, Anthropology, Eugenics (not only the Nazis used this “science”), Forensics, Social Darwinism, Biomedicine and of course, Genetics are sciences that have all contributed to the hundreds of studies on, surrounding, or motivated by this topic on IQ and race.

The German-Jewish scholar and professor at Columbia University in New York City Franz Boas (1858โ€“1942), persuaded anthropologists to drop their 19th century belief that there were largely insuperable differences between the major human races – differences that, it had been thought, could not even be decreased by interbreeding.

Boas did a job of social engineering the direction that social anthropology would take, however, the duplicity was apparent due in the most part to the already established ideas brought over from the Enlightenment Period.

For example, during the European Enlightenment, great philosophers such as Germany’s Immanuel Kant and Scotland’s David Hume were quite sure there were major and deep-seated racial differences between Blacks and Whites. In fact, Kant wrote in [1764]:

โ€œThe Negroes of Africa have received from nature no intelligence that rises above the foolish. Hume invites anyone to quote a single example of a Negro who has exhibited talents. He asserts that among the hundred thousands of blacks who have been seduced away from their own countries, although very many of them have been set free, yet not a single one has ever been found that has performed anything great whether in art or science or in any other laudable subject; but among the whites, people constantly rise up from the lowest rabble and acquire esteem through their superior gifts.โ€

If in modern American society today, a Black president did not sit comfortably in the White House in Washington DC โ€“ this Kantian statement would have been a soliloquy of sorts for many disillusioned Blacks around the world โ€“ not just in so-called 1st world countries.

But before anyone screams โ€œintellectual tyrannyโ€ โ€“ letโ€™s look at the mounting evidence on this issue on the science of intelligence and whether Black falls unceremoniously at the bottom of the league table in blinding disparity to both Whites and Asians and what is the real truth behind these claims.

Is there an inconvenient TRUTH* here for people of color to answer? And if so, how do we deal with its ramifications? And finally, is enough being done to level the playing field?

At the forefront in this debate is British born John Philippe Rushton who is a psychology professor at the University of Western Ontario in Canada and most widely known for his work on intelligence and racial differences, particularly his book โ€œRace, Evolution and Behaviourโ€. His work in this area is highly controversial, and has been criticized by other researchers and civil rights organisations as being poorly researched and racist in nature.

He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American, British, and Canadian Psychological Associations. In 1988, he was made a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He has been head of the Pioneer Fund since 2002.

Rushtonโ€™s academic position is clear โ€“ Blacks are intellectually inferior due to genetic make-up; the size of their brains happen to be smaller; they have larger genitals – making them more promiscuous than whites or other groups.

Rushtonโ€™s scientific neo-Nazi ideology is couched in language that gives it a guise of academic acceptability but has been reprehensible in many quarters. Rushton’s key arguments enter a segregationist domicile where Blacks are seen as an inferior (Straw Man – just different) race; where Africans are portrayed as being far less intelligent than Caucasian or Asian folks.

His neoDarwinist evolutionary-type theory posits this malodorous Malthusian notion of “survival strategy” where Africans supposedly do not rely on cognitive ability for the propagation of their species โ€“ but rather on promiscuous sexual breeding, intermarriage and mass polygamy.

The perpetration of such massive intellectual fraud, coupled with no real basis where one can scientifically prove with empirical data analysis that has led Rushton to claim that genetically inherited sexual promiscuity is responsible for single-parent families and that the AIDS epidemic among Canadians and Americans of African descent, as well as increased crime rates among Blacks is fostered by his findings.

Actually in the early 1970โ€™s, the Pioneer Fund (for which Rushton is Chair) paid the Foundation of Human Understanding to distribute hundreds of free copies of pamphlets by white supremacist psychologists Richard Herrnstein and Arthur Jensen (The Bell Curve advocates) to the registrars’ offices of universities across the US (and the UK โ€“ though many academics would try to disprove the following) in a blatant attempt to influence administration policies against the admittance of African-American students into tertiary education. This has been the dangerous precedent set in motion by racists whose sole agenda is to have influence on mainstream public policy.

On the other end of the scientific race and IQ debate are centrists and assimilationists like James Robert Flynn, Emeritus Professor of Political Studies at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand who researches intelligence and has become well known for his discovery of the Flynn Effect, the continued year-after-year increase of IQ scores in all parts of the world. Flynn wanted to define intelligence at least generally enough to be independent of culture, emphasizing that the style of thought required to deal with problems of survival in a desert (mapping, trackingโ€ฆ), is different from that required to do well in the modern West (academic achievement etc), but that both undoubtedly require intelligence.

The Flynn Effect really threw the cat amongst the pigeons (no play on words intended to offend my Buddhists brothers) as the increase of the average intelligence quotient (IQ) showed higher test scores over several generations (IQ gains over time) especially amongst African Americans. The effect has also had dramatic results on the other cognitive aspects of semantic and episodic memory. However, there are some scientists who challenge Flynnโ€™s findings and cite that widespread emphasis on early education and improved nutrition has resulted in higher IQโ€™s even amongst Blacks.

In October 2007, James Watson, the legendary biologist, was condemned and forced into retirement after claiming that African intelligence wasn’t “the same as ours.” “Racist, vicious and unsupported by science,” said the Federation of American Scientists. “Utterly unsupported by scientific evidence,” declared the U.S. government’s supervisor of genetic research. The New York Times told readers that when Watson implied “that Black Africans are less intelligent than whites, he hadn’t a scientific leg to stand on.”

Although the science of race and IQ is in large measure based on shoddy science โ€“ academics are still somehow influencing public policy through their specious research findings and this is something which must be attacked from all sides on the academic divide. We must only be able to accept science which weighs heavily on the side of fostering cohesion, equality of opportunity and fairness.

Anything less we must tergiversate.

    A Black man is a Black man anywhere he or she lives. In the same way a Jew is a Jew anywhere he or she lives. If American Blacks are celebrating in the US it is something that Black anywhere should want to identify.

    Any individual who likes sports do it based on the entertainment value it provides and not who invested it. Bear in mind cricket was not invented by Blacks.

    The history of science and scientific acheivement does not rest with one group of race but all mankind. The Egyptians were finding volume of three dimensional object and the area of curve surface long before the invention of calculus by Newton.The Babylonians and the Greeks build upon that further. The contribution to science and mathematics by the Romans was zero.Scientific thought and ideas was not fashionable until the renaissance era.

    Black people may not have high power theorist like Gauss, Newton, Einstein, Darwin , etc However, we can claim a long list of inventors.If we are to judge IQ on sheer brain power then the jews will be superior because they have a dispropotinate amount of Nobel laureate( over 150) over any other group.

    So far, apart from peace prize, blacks have won three nobel prizes. Two for literature and one for economics. One from Nigeria and two from the Caribbean.Nigerian academics and reserchers have be nominated for years in the science but have not been successful.Nigeria has the largest credential black middle class in the whole world.There students have consistently outperform all other racial group at american universities.A study done some years ago by black conservative Economist Thomas Sowell showed that Students from Africa and the Caribbean always outperform their american counterpart at the Ivy League Universities.

    Artistic creativity is just as important and powerful as science. Its takes as much sheer brain power to be a creative artist as a quantum physicist.We as black people have excelled in this endeavour too.Think about it for a minute can you think of america without our great musical influences. A music lover at my job quipped recently “thank god for black people” after imbibing a few infectious motown classic.

  15. The concept of IQ was chattered by Harvard University Dr. Howard Gardner by another concept called Multiple Intellgences.

    On the other issue how can our relatively young societies ward off the influences rammed home by globalization, travel, Internet etc. Agree with the attitude to support indigenous but lets talk about how.

  19. It is a great and eternal shame that in this day and age in Barbados, a black elected government can still be seen by the PDC and so many others to be further oppressing, degradating, and marginalizing thousands upon thousands of other blacks in this a predominantly black country.

    Furthermore, it is absolutely appalling that this black DLP government has not itself been ashamed or reluctant to portray itself as a modern day repressive state agency to many politically black conscious Barbadians esp. in so far as it continues to use and adopt many useless Euro-centric ideas, principles and methods to disgracefully help it in the same dehumanization of these blacks, via TAXATION, INTEREST RATES, MORTGAGES, INSTITUTIONAL REPAYABLE LOANS, MOTOR VEHICLE INSURANCE SYSTEMS, ETC..

    However, as these and other things happen to the inglory of black/African history overall, there exists a set of black middle class psuedo-intellectuals in Barbados – and believe it some of them think that they are really intellectuals when in truth and in fact they are NOT – who simply persists in talking, writing, and analysing ad infinitum ad nausem on many black vs white, or black vs indic issues and affairs as if they were part of their professional vocational duties.

    Of course, such persons must engage conscientiously in intellectualism philosophism concerning many political, sociological, material and religious issues affecting aspects of our Black culture, history and heritage, but they must never themselves feel so free to do so to a point whereby in dealing with such issues it becomes for them so much a part of their own lived contrived religious ritual and outlook, that there is paralysis of action and interaction on their part as it relates to their otherwise starkly failing to help make life better for Africans in Africa and across the Diaspora.

    So, as this black DLP government in a predominantly black country helps to further dehumanize so many hordes of black people, this very infinitesimal number of middle class people, who strangely parade as black conscious, are found to be apathetic to, uninfluential of, or simply watching on as LITTLE OR NOTHING is done by them or some others to help prevent another DLP Government from once again politically systematically destroying and dismantling many aspects of the black Barbadian society in which many of our past enslaved and other forbears through time really helped to establish.

    Therefore, as thousands upon thousands of poor and marginal blacks continue to depend on menial jobs and wages to eke out a living in this Batrbadian society in which the cost of living and doing business remains ever so high — check talk now about a public sector wage freeze; continue to exist in a state of landlessness and propertylessness, as more and more foreigners are entering and taking up more of our Barbadian lands and construct buildings on them, and as a more and more blacks become ingrained in many decadent Eurcentric value systems – this same set of black middle class psuedo-intellectuals seem to relish living aloof from the dire and awful plight and pain and misery of the average black male and female, very much surrounded in their own intellectual citadels by countless theoritical and informational goings on, and at times seeming to prefer to deal with more intellectually demanding apolitical mundane and esoteric matters – even if they relate to black culture, history, and heritage.

    What is worse is that while they seriously rhetorize and intellectualize black male and female issues, two other races in Barbados – Indians and Arabs – who apparently do not do this amount of intellectualizing of racial issues in the country – are bit by bit taking over more and more of what would have historically been part of the black Barbadian society and culture and more and more of what materially financially ought to be logically taken over and dominated by latter- generation Barbadian blacks from Barbadian whites in this country.

    Thus, how many of them helped in the lost battle to preserve BS and T as a Barbadian treasure and as a company that should have been by now wholly/majority owned and controlled by local Barbadian blacks, rather than it being presently owned by Trinidad and Tobagonians of varying hues?. How many of them, God damn it? Huh? How many?

    For them, what do blacks in Barbados wholly or majority owning and controlling such a company mean for the majority of blacks in Barbados anyhow, when many of them already do NOT even produce many goods and services as part of some black enterprise that is centered on elements of Garveyist philosophies?

    This set of black intellectuals are akin to many of those blacks who have been successful or outstanding in business, commerce, education, law, medicine, politics, history, etc. – Mr. Neville Rowe, Mr. Keith Rayside, Sir Lloyd Sandiford, Dr. Trevor Carmichael, Mr. Henry Forde, Dr. Richard Haynes, Mr. Owen Arthur, Mr. Robert Bobby Morris but who have been mainly so recognized by some people in the country as having been successful in those particular areas of life primarily because of the need for them to have achieved certain personal professional successes through exploiting the opportunities given to them in this elite driven Barbados Eurocentric system, but who, though, have been doing little or nothing societally to help thousands of other blacks in Barbados organize and agitate on the basis of some Pan Africanist/Black conscious philosophy, thus laying the foundation for a stronger better black society in Barbadosy.

    So, while some of these so-called Black intellectuals might have been successful in achieving certain personal academic professional goals, say, in relationship to obtaining Degrees in African Studies/Black History, or as Lecturers in such disciplines at whatever colleges or univerities outside of Barbados, they have certainly failed, et al, to organize Pan- African Centered Schools, Pan African Centered Religious Organizations, Pan African Centered political groups, as a way of helping to edify and uplift Blacks in Barbados and beyond.

    Certainly, there is one book – that they must get, if they have not got it yet, a copy of : Pan-Africanism in Barbados by a local Pan Africanist scholar and teacher, Mr. Rodney Worrell, and get an insightful overview of the IDEOLOGICAL POLITICAL ACTIVITIES of many major Pan Africanist organizations and personalities over the years in Barbados; organizations like the Barbados branch of Universal Negro Improvement Association in the early 1900s, the Working Mens Association in the same early 1900s, the Democratic League, the PPM, the Black Star Newspaper in the 1960s/1970s, the YORUBA Group, the 1970s and recently the Clement Payne Movement in the 1990s up to now; personalities like Mr. Clement Payne, Mr. Israel Lovell, Mr. Menzies Chase, Mr. Darnley Alleyne, Mr. Ulric Grant, Mr. Leroy Harewood, Mr. Elombe Mottley, and of more recent vintage Mr. David Commissiong; and by obtaining such to start imagining how these figures would have been seeking to organize and educate many of the oppressed black masses and middle classes at the wider societal level in Barbados years ago against deep seated colonial racist attitudes and systems in Barbados.

    Finally, for now, it is clear that this set of black middle class psuedo-intellectuals normally eschews serious political discussion or political organization that is centred on reversing historical injustices towards the black male and female within this society, or on advancing the empowerment and dignity of the black male and female in Barbados, for, et al, fear of some mythical stigma of having fundamentalist black association being wiped on them by many members of their own intellectual class, or for fear of losing social class prestige, rather than using any thrusts forward in those directions to gain greater respect and honours from their peers, like Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and Mr. Commissiong had done and got in the 80s and 90s. They also prefer to be quietly partisan in their most of the social intellectual elements. What a shame though!!!

    N.B. Just recently the PDC was most taken aback to read in one of local newspaper recently how the Minister of Education Mr. Ronald Jones was saying how the formal educational curricula in the government schools was too packed to accomodate an African Studies program but that such was suited to a more informal environment re seminars, lectures in the communities etc.

    Yet, we have heard or read nothing to suggest that any of these same so-fcalled black middle class intellectuals have berated or chided the minister for that piece of intellectual methodological trash.

  20. It cannot be a special case that Barbados prosperity and development was made possible by its white economic class. If you look at the economic profile of most caribbean countries you will notice an underlying common theme. And that is, most of their economic wealth is controlled by people who represent a lighter shade of the color continium ( Jews, arabs, white and Indians).The majority of the black population provide the grunt labour and owns little economic resource. The educated black elite resign themselves to political pursuit in which they have a comparative advantage.

    The worst of the scenario is Hiati which is ruled by a family of seven(BAMBAM) otherwise known as the morally repugnant elite(MRE).Right now they are the biggest beneficiary of Hiati disaster.Jamaica is ruled by the 21 family-mostly old money and a few new entrants.Antigua is the same. It seems to me wether through design or circumstances the black population that make up the larger population of the Islands are living in a economic apartheid system.

    Contrast this situation with Nigeria notwithstanding their penchant for corruption, a large portion of their economy is in the hands of people who looks like them.It is said that people from the Igibo tribe are the most entrepreneured set of blacks on the planet.

    please note that I do NOT support either the claims or the thesis of Lynn and Vanhanen’s book.I only made reference to it to show that racist views are still being promoted and that those promoting such views are “respected” persons in academia and are well connected to those in positions of authority. Further it would appear that South Africa and Barbados by their high GDP do not conform to the book’s thesis that average national IQ and GDP are positively correlated. To get around this obstacle, the book’s authors have explicitly credited the White segment of Barbados’ population with our economic success. Black Bajans are thus marginalised as a causative factor in our economic success. Of course many Black Bajans sadly support this view given the negative response to Courtney Blackman’s position that our economic success is due mainly to Black leadership.

    Questions arise as to why after nearly 50 years of Independence, whites remain firmly in control of the private sector in most C’bean countries. It must be noteworthy that the present DLP administration chose to use public funds to prop up two white construction firms under the claim of an economic stimulus and maintaining job creation. It is not clear to me why NIS funds should be used to build two ten story office blocks in Warrens when we need a new hospital, at least two new secondary schools and a centre for the performing arts not to mention infrastructural work in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. Further why should these buildings be built by white firms? The actions of the DLP is even more galling when juxtaposed with the criticism of the same firms and their role in the sale of property on the West Coast by the same DLP when they were in opposition.

  23. If the Blacks in B’dos, whose deposits in commercial banks, credit unions, etc, surely exceed ONE BILLION $$, were to pool their financial resources, they could easily have bought BS & T, and other businesses.

    Why have they NOT done this? Who IS to blame for their lack of togetherness?

    The Indians and the Arabs, just get on with their own business, quietly buying up so much property, etc, etc!

    Who is to blame for these other ethnic groups doing this?

  24. Surviving 14-15 days in the rubble of an earthquake, takes a lot of mental energy. In fact I would argue that after so many years of poverty, maintaining the will to life and be happy doing so takes a special use of one’s mental capacity.

    At its core the brain’s main function is to produce and control movement. Blacks seem to do very well in endevours that require complex movements, i.e, dancing, singing, sports, etc. So you should no longer be surprise why these things have been degraded in their importance. lol!

    Exactly, entrepreneurism IS exactly what I was thinking about before reading your comment. Why is this so apparently lacking in most Blacks; and seem to be second nature, especially in the Arab and Indian culture?

    Blacks are well qualified in Law, Medicine, Engineering, etc, etc, but when it comes to business, I just don’t understand why they can’t get this together!

    Of course, someone will be blamed for this!

  34. The facts clearly support the position that blacks are indeed inferior to the lighter skinned races in entrepreneurial intelligence. If we are honest, we will have to admit also that Barbados and South Africa for example, owe any distinct developmental advantages to the fact that these countries were (are) essentially run by whites.

    However this position is not very difficult to understand.

    Entrepreneurial intelligence in our present world translates into selfish, single minded greed. It requires the kind of mentality that could justify slavery for centuries; that could justify an Iraq war offensive on patently false pretenses while profiting handsomely.

    Blacks, as a general rule are incapable of such ‘business savvy’,’ management intelligence’ and ‘cognitive abilities’.

    ….thus General Powell could not continue in office with Bush; Mandela returned love for hate and Obama appears diametrically opposite to his predecessors .

    On the other hand….
    Show me another race that can match our ability to forgive oppressors…. or to turn the other cheek….
    ….another more willing to look beyond our current existence for true reality

    The facts are that Blacks are generally not naturally equipped with the characteristics that promote success in our existing world where the jungle tactics of greed, hate, strife and war define ‘success’.

    In the new world where love and faith and humility is the norm, things will be quite different.

    One of the signs given of the end of this phase of earth was something to the effect that ‘the first shall be last and the last shall be first….’

    ….or that things will be completely ‘topsy turvy’. The wise will appear foolish; the strong weak; and the weak – mighty.

    What IQ and cognitive ability what??!!
    What intelligence can there be when one has no idea of the very basic PURPOSE of one’s existence???

    What does it profit Bill Gates to gain the whole eWorld ….only to lose his own soul…?

    I am bowled over by the fact that in my country there seems to be such a dispassionate response to what are clearly areas of hierarchy, positioning and power – but we are content to posit our individual narratives on the subject without realizing the need for concerted action to bring about any meaningful change…

    As you mentioned South Africa – the country did NOT* begin change with the release of our “beloved Madiba” from prison after 28 years on Robin’s Island – but the process had long started with the “resistance” and the “struggle” – (with many paying with blood) for what was a just and worthy cause…

    If we cannot hold folks to account – including the power elite (those who control the wealth) as well as those who grind at the wheels of political expediency – then we will get what we have always got because our INTELLIGENCE* does not allow for no more than internal bickering and lack of consensus…

    In Barbados, changing political parties but getting the same ‘ole’, same ‘ole’ after almost 40 years – surely the light-bulb has gone in the heads of the electorate ( and forgive me for going off message in a political rant)…

    But as a country with a 98.9% literacy rate and a highly developed educational system – it maybe time for Hilary Becks* and others to revamp what is clearly not working as a set curriculum….(but then these “buggers” talk a good talk anyway)… For all its worth, what they all seem to be doing is following the basic Eurocentric model which churns out BA (hons) MA’s and PhD’s with few if any at all challenging the status quo or attempting to overturn the apple cart…

    But let me quit while I am ahead –

    Intellectual anarchists are not en vogue neither are they on most people’s X’MAS list!!!!


  38. In thinking about the charge that we are consumers and that we don’t engage in collective action, somehow it seems that capitalism as a system still has us bewildered.

    There are some things about us that do not blend with capitalism. Things we say about ourselves such as, “We like freeness” or “handouts”, which is not conducive to a capitalist system.

    The system is based on profit. Yet we come out of school looking for a job. If we start to do good in a business, spending gets conspicuous. None of these work in a capitalist system, so we become slaves to the system.

    We don’t make the system, we don’t create the system, we don’t take ownership of the system, we follow the rules of others that convince us that the world will not work without a capitalist system. The problem is that we don’t seem to be disposed to the system; it’s not our baby so we playing catch up at all times.

    In the end though, we still play a role. This brings us back to being the consumer. Our role is more like the worker bees in that our activity creates honey for somebody else.

  40. The other thing is that we have not put money into perspective. What is money but a currency of convenience. Printed paper which is used for trading and exchange; a replacement for barter.

    The thing to do is to find a way to live without spending too much money on sustaining yourself and family. This is why we fail to “create wealth”.

    For most households, except for rent, food is the next largest consumer of salaries. We simply work to spend it. Apart from the Tourism effect, it is reflected in our food import bill, but even this is an indicator of the wider Barbadian society.
