blueconnectHistorically Barbados has been a most profitable market for LIME formerly Cable & Wireless. It should concern Barbadians how LIME has betrayed the willingness of Barbadian consumers to stupidly buy its high priced products and services over the years. It should concern Barbadians how the relevant regulatory agency, the Fair Trading Commission has ruled on policy which facilitates the perpetual raping of Barbadian consumers, namely the Price Cap Mechanism by LIME.

In the current economic downturn which has seen many of the small islands in the Caribbean scurrying to the International Monetary Fund, and despite super profits, LIME continues to send home Barbadians under the guise of a restructure. A company has the right to act in the interest of its shareholder, it is acknowledged most companies recognize it has a social investment obligation. There is no commercial enterprise which can profitably exist in a market which collapses i.e.high unemployment.

magicjackfooterimageIt is time for stupid Barbadians to demonstrate that the investment in free education which previous governments have supported was not a wasted effort. The most profitable revenue centre of LIME is the revenues it generates from long distance calling. One way Barbadians can protest the inhumane management practices at LIME is to access the many alternatives available to facilitate long distance calling at super low prices.

The matter of LIME has become so serious that BU will depart from normal policy and recommend a few alternatives. Let the record show BU does not generate one cent in revenue and has no interest in the below mentioned interests:

  1. Blue Connect – As we understand it Blue Connect is a locally operated company which sells calling cards to be used for long distance calling. The cost per minute based on their website listing beats LIME by up to 50%.
  2. Magic Jack – For those who have ADSL this device appears to the answer to your prayers. A read of the product information confirms a regular cordless phone can be hooked to the device. Based on our reading (subject to correction) called to the US are free and minutes to call internationally can be purchased at super low rates.
  3. Skype – Requires a download of the Skype software to a computer by the callers. Calls between two Skype computer callers are free. Minutes can be purchased at super low rates to make international calls.
  4. Gizmo – For those who want to use their cellphones to make telephone calls at super low rates there is an application called Gizmo. Download the Gizmo software to your cellphone. The cellphone must have access to the Internet of course. After the download access the Gizmo website and using a credit card buy minutes at super low rates and call anywhere in the world. A member of the BU family using Gizmo but connect to the Internet via his free wireless network! No need to pay for the Internet feature from the local telecommunications rip-offs!

We have to issue a disclaimer. There are many products out there which can deliver, it requires a little time to save some money in your pocket and send a loud message to LIME in the process.

  1. Apparently Magic Jack has limited tech support, so if you can’t get it to work or you have problems you are pretty much on your own.

We’ve all heard the saying, ‘You get what you pay for,’ and it’s become increasingly clear that magicJack is no exception. Sure, it appears to be a small, crafty device claiming to change the world of communications for a ridiculously low annual fee, but the reality is you may find yourself down and out after ordering from this company.

According to a post at Yahoo Answers, For Magic Jack to work it has to install its software on your computer but then does not allow you to remove it through the normal uninstall procedure provided by add/remove programs method, Instead it looks like you would have to go in and edit the registry (aka asking for trouble – if you are not an experienced computer user) if you want to get it off your system. Furthermore, their software sounds like it incorporates a hefty dose of spyware as well.

in the tos you agree that everything in your computer is fair game for them to know about, all web sites, email, and numbers called are there info.

you agree to have all of your information resold to third parties.

there is no un install for this program. even if you stop using it, it gathers your information.

you are put under high pressure to sign up and pay for 5 years.

there is no published phone number, email address, or mailing address.

all customer support is done via type in the box chat.

there is no written warranty on the box. it breaks, you buy another to maintain your service.

computer must be left on to make or receive calls.

pop up window comes to front of screen anytime there is a call in or out call.

majicjack spyware slows down your computer even when you are not using magicjack

advertising is in the pop up box.

and yes, you do save around $150 a year not using a real voip company.

at what little price people put on the information and security.

so ask yourself, is it really worth it?

    Like they say, buyer beware.

  2. @Green Monkey

What do you expect to get for USD20.00? The consumer must weigh the attendant risks. BTW is there a software nowadays which does not deposit spyware on the computer?

  3. Is it NOT time for the masses and middle classes to take serious political action against the TAXATION system in this country too and NOT just against Cable and Wireless?

Have DLP and BLP Governments over the years NOT been using Cable and Wireless ( LIME) as a vehicle for stealing millions and millions of Barbados dollars in so-called TAXES from the relevant citizens, businesses and other entities of this country?

How could it be rightly accepted by some Barbadians that this multinational telecommunications giant, Cable and Wireless ( LIME), has been flagrantly ripping us off for years, whereas many of these same people continue to conveniently ignore the fact that our own elected DLP and BLP Governments have been doing far worse than Cable and Wireless has been doing to the people of this country, i.e, using this wicked evil TAXATION system to steal and rob thousands upon thousands of citizens ( visitors too) of millions and millions of Barbados dollars each year?

The truth is that Prime Ministers and Ministers of Finance have over the years been wrecking far, far more harm and destruction than Cable and Wireless has been doing to the life chances, psyches and societies of our Barbadian people, esp. those of the masses and middle classes of people, under the foolish abominable retarded pretext that “the government has to have TAXES to pay for the multifarious security, social and welfare infrastructures and services provided by the state”.

Too, while Cable and Wireless has been wickedly using its own resources to extract super profits from the Barbadian populace, these DLP and BLP Governments have been deliberately massively failing to maximize use of the earning capacity of the personnel, assets and resources within the jurisdiction of the state to earn more revenues for the state. What a disgraceful disgrace too!!

So, just as much as we will NOT condemn Cable and Wireless for laying off workers – because by laying off these intelligent and skilled workers, it, et al, gives them greater opportunities to go and form their own businesses or partnerships, some of which could in turn be able to compete with Cable and Wireless in many areas of business in the country, we will NOT condemn the government for laying off 25 or so very intelligent and skilled workers at this time from the Urban Development Commission, or condemn C O Williams Construction for looking to lay off close to 200 intelligent and talented workers soon, the latter of whom could also go and be made to form their own businesses or partnerships in this country.

For, the People’s Democratic Congress (PDC) must clearly publicly make it known again that the time has come for the masses and middle classes to live in greater freedom and democracy away from all of those major and horrendous circumstances of widespread exploitation, dehumanization and chronic dependence in the country and some of which are represented in the likes of the wicked TAXATION and WORK CULTURES in Barbados.

That is why we in PDC propose that anytime a PDC Government is formed in this country there shall be the Abolition of TAXATION and WORK in Barbados, and in their places the establishment of better and fairer system for assisting in the further growth and development of this country.

So, down with the damned DLP and the blasted BLP!!

    PDC

    LIME,Little Interest in Meeting Expectations.
Imaging I got up yesterday morning with my landline in perfect working order.A LIME technican later came to work on a number of poles in my area.He lost his grip on one of those heavy cables and it suddenly sagged to the ground. Five minutes after ,I discovered that my phone was dead. I made a quick search of the are to find the technician but had no luck.I immediately call LIME,after a long wait, I was then instructed by the person on the other end to carry out a chech at the customers box on the premises to ascertain whether the fault was between the box and the pole or between the box and my home. After this was done call back LIME so that a fault report can be logged. The check proved of course that the fault was between the box and the pole, which is LIME’S responsibility. On calling back,I was assured that the fault would be rectified between 1 and 5 days. For the love of me I could not see why LIME could not contact the Technician involved and asked him to return and rectify the job that he was responsible for mucking up.But then again, from the tone of the two different LIME employees I had dealt with over the phone suggested to me that they were not based in Barbados.

    @WBA et al…

Let me please present a working theory…

If you were concerned about your job, and you were able to somehow ensure that you (or one of you brethren) would be guaranteed of future work, might you not do some things (no matter how immoral) which could ensure that you (or one of your brethren) might be ensured of future work?

    @BU Family… To expand on WBA’s above…

Only two months ago, I observed a LIME employee working on the Poles near one of my PoPs (Points of Presence)…

Within 30 minutes of the LIME employee leaving the Pole, the Barbados Light and Power (BL&P) street light’s lens was lying on the street….

(If I’m sued for this statement, I’m more than happy to provide empirical evidence to support my above.)

    LOL…

  7. Magic Jack is almost idiot proof. I have two of them and had them both set up in less than 5 minutes.
I knew there was going to come a day when technology would take a bite out of crooks like Bartel and STV. Eventually satellite technology will cut out local providers that have been raping Bajans for years, including the government that wants to tax every damn thing that moved.

While I am rambling, this website looks horrible. Change the background color. A body could go blind reading this shite.
