[Bridgetown, BARBADOS] A land use map depicting the planned loss of parkland at Graeme Hall has been released this week by the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. Titled “Parkland Loss Planned at Graeme Hall,” the new map illustrates the Government’s plan to allow residential and commercial development on government-owned Graeme Hall land.

Contrary to the original 1988 National Physical Development Plan (PDP), the new 2003 PDP recommends that parkland at Graeme Hall be limited to the flood-prone Graeme Hall Swamp, and that all dry land be developed. Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary officials are critical of the land use change, saying that urban development of Graeme Hall would be akin to developing Central Park in New York, and that wetland buffers and recreational opportunities would be permanently destroyed. Sanctuary officials also cited recommendations from the Urban Land Use Institute quality-of-life recommendation of 25.5 acres of parklands for every 1000 people.

The move to convert the Graeme Hall parklands began after the Sanctuary was acquired by Peter Allard in the 1990’s. Allard, a retired Canadian attorney and investor, purchased the Sanctuary lands after due diligence examination showed that the 1988 PDP designated the approximately 240-acre green space at Graeme Hall as an environmental, recreational and agricultural buffer for the wetland, and as a green corridor between Oistins and Greater Bridgetown urban areas.

Parliament ratified the land use change in early 2008 despite a petition signed by 6,000 Barbadians to preserve the 240-acre Graeme Hall area as a National Park. Located at, the new map derives its information from Map 20 of the 1988 PDP, and Maps 4 and 6 of the 2003 PDP. These maps can be located in the “Map” section. Graeme Hall contains some of the highest concentrations of biodiversity in Barbados and is the last major urban green space over 200 acres available as a regional park on the South Coast.

  1. So when are the going to building the island off the west coast???

  2. Everyone in the world is trying to preserve the environment, but we in BIM clearly know something no-one else seems to comprehend. Clearly the ecology and natural habitat of this area is not enough to retain its natural services, maybe we should run out of water catchment areas and see what happens when there is major flooding then to rethink our ignorance. As a young bajan i really have to wonder where any of my younger relatives and children will have to view nature, and play, when generations prior to mine completely pave over every sentiment of natural beauty.

  3. Young Bajan is right. Any right-thinking person would be concerned with what is happening with Graeme Hall. However, I do wish the Government would publish the extremely rude and threatening letter that Allard wrote to – not only P.M. Thompson, but also to Arthur when he was Prime Minister. Then people would see another side to the story.

    You know what, folks? Check out over on BFP, a comment made by one 787, followed CLOSELY by one from Keltruth Blog, put 2 and 2 together and you will come up with more than 4 – trust me!

  4. There is nothing more to be said about this matter other than it has become mired in politics which has bred bad faith on both sides. Can both sides step back take a deep breath and give it another crack? We have our doubts!

  5. The island is becoming a concrete mess like St. Maarten!!!!! The island is sometimes call Barbados The Beautiful, but with the ignorance of the government, the natural beauty of Barbados will slowly but surely decimate. I LOVE Barbados, but I DON’T LOVE the people who inhabit it!!!! Barbados has yet to establish proper and appropriate land laws, and yet we are constantly called a “developed” nation. The environment needs to become the number one concern in Barbados and should be protected for always and forever!!!!

  6. Owen Arthur and David Thompson could go to HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fucking assholes!! Destroying the island let them both burn!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. As I understand it, here is the Resolution on the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary, which Miss Mottley tabled in Parliament.

    As I further understand it, the DLP is yet to put it on the order paper for debate.

    Why, this issue is not important to the DLP.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

    Whereas the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary is a 35 acre property within the Graeme Hall Swamp as a Barbados National Environmental Heritage site;

    And whereas the said Sanctuary is part of an endangered Lesser Antilles Mangrove ecosystem with its brackish waters fed by springs and runoffs within the 1156 acre Graeme Hall watershed;

    And whereas the Sanctuary is the last significant mangrove woodland and the largest inland water body in Barbados and one of only three primary roost areas and the longest-established heron roost area in Barbados;

    And whereas the Sanctuary is home to the widest diversity of resident and migratory birds with at least 84 birds species having been recorded;

    And whereas the Sanctuary also provides an environment that seeks to educate all of its visitors and can enhance the knowledge of all Barbadians, especially our school children;

    And whereas in 2007, the Barbados Labour Party initiated an Innovative Plan Green Economy Initiative in Barbados, which was intended to address issues such as energy conservation, noise reduction and clean air promotion, ecosystems (or environmental infrastructure); clean and efficient technology; renewable energy; biodiversity-based products and services (such as organic foods); chemical and waste management and mitigation technologies as well as green communities with ecologically friendly buildings, construction, and transport systems;

    And whereas the Green Economy Initiative formulated by the BLP Administration – makes recommendations for greening Barbados; creating new green jobs, and was intended to move the Barbados economy to a green economy for enterprises,

    BE IT RESOLVED that this Parliament calls upon the Government of Barbados to acquire the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary to avert its closure and to ensure that it remains open for the benefit of all Barbadians, for the benefit of our fragile environment and for the patrimony of this country.”

  12. My heart goes out to you all. You MUST act now before it is too late! If you all spent 6 months here – soulless concrete hell – England, You would all make the effort that is needed to stop these MONSTERS from destroying your beautiful and sacred land. PLEASE PLEASE people gather together to prevent the tragic loss of anymore of your blessed natural country. Too many tragedies I have witnessed the loss of – Batts Rock – an entire forest and half a beach – GONE forever to a few rich people! The pain of all this destruction is too much. But I would hear people in Barbados say “its just bush…” like it was nothing to them. Wake up people before its too late. Stop cutting down your trees and everything that grows natural for some concrete driveway and flat lawn. I wish I could help you all, I went to the government building to complain but got what I expected no-one really even knew or let alone cared what I was saying. I have been blessed to experience the immense beauty of Barbados, you are all more blessed to live there – don’t allow these people to rip the soul out of your home. ~Nature is what IS – We cannot survive without it. It was given to us for FREE. I pray its not too late..
