She went to Minnesota like a “star” not from the East, but the far North, and before she spoke there was whooping and hollering.  Sarah Palin was amongst friends – fellow Republicans – if there was any doubt, it was loudly put to rest.  Before the din had died she tore into Barack Obama, and did they love her.  Of course intrepid reporters had taken a trip to Wasilla, where it all started.  They discovered a story of a 17 year old unmarried pregnant girl, Sarah Palin’s daughter…what does it matter these days.

The French have a saying, politics end at the bedroom door. As if to prove the point lawyer and French Justice Minister 42 year old Rachida Dati, is heavily pregnant.  That she is unmarried and refuses to name the father adds spice to the story.  The daughter of a Moroccan father and Algerian mother, the first immigrant to hold such a cabinet position; and seen by some as a role model, has caused a few eyebrows to be raised.  She is also a Muslim and was appointed by no other than French President Nicholas Sarkosy.

I will close the door ever so gently on the bedroom, and return to the American Presidential Election.

There is also the little question of Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, Sarah Palin’s brother-in-law; allegations have been made that she -Sarah Palin – used her political influence in an effort to have him dismissed, because of a child custody dispute between him and Palin’s sister.  All grist to the mill and I am sure many more stones will be overturned, but will they have any impact on the election…that is open to question.

Earlier this year on Barbados Underground I said that the “R” word will have an impact on the American Electorate…some of them.  One Barbados Underground commenter went as far as to suggest “I had no faith in black people.”  The nonsense of such a remark does not worth bothering with, but I will indulge him.  Why is so much fuss being made about Barack Obama’s nomination? Why is there so much global interest? Because Obama is “black,” to suggest therefore that “R” will play no part in the American Presidential election; is to give his presence neutrality that his DNA would prove a lie.

Senator McCain’s acceptance speech was well received, he “purred” through it nicely, more detail and substance, even Presidential.  Was there a feeling it did not have the “bite” of Sarah Palin’s?  There is a danger I see in Sarah Palin’s meteoric rise.  If she has to take on Barack Obama; there will come a time when questions, like why can’t McCain do that?  The strength of a joint enterprise of this kind can be undermined by the force of a junior partner…just a thought.

Obama can wisely concentrate on McCain and leave Sarah Palin to Joe Biden.  He can justifiably say, it is McCain who is in my sights not Sarah Palin, she will not be President.  When Sarah Palin is released from the Republican cocoon and exposed alone to the media, then battle will really commence.  No doubt there are a few reporters straining at the leash to question her closely on a myriad of issues; a few might be even hoping to make a name for themselves.

I have refrained from mentioning the “R” word, I wonder if the American electorate will not think about it, or utter it before the vote?

  1. Check out this Youtube video showing how US politicians try to compromise the so-called media watchdogs who are supposed to be holding them and their policies up to scrutiny and examination.

After you’ve become accustomed to hanging out with Mr. or Mrs. Politician and the family during off hours, and scarfing down his/her food and booze, it’s only human nature that you might be reluctant to raise some probing questions if you suspect the answer might prove embarrassing to your new and possibly powerful and influential “friend.”

  2. The Sarah Palin saga just goes to show how corrupt the american standards are. I’m convinced that Obama would be beaten, not by a better candidate, not only because he’s black but because of the GOP flaunting power. This shows the weakness of the american system which the eastern block will take advantage of. This elections will spell the downfall of the mighty america.

  3. It should be of concern that the one economic power in the world and this is slipping by the month would elect a President who is on record of acknowledging economic matters he leaves to others. His strength is to promote his war record much of which he spent as a POW.

To compound matters he selects a 18 month tern Governor of one of the smallest states. It is his right but it is our right to critique his selection. It is interesting that a poll by international press indicate that they feel Obama being the world citizen that he is is best positions to bill bridges in a world where there is much disharmony.

Now we get to the issue of race, in 2008 it still exist. Hillary Clinton referred to it as electability.

  4. In spite of all the talk, one simple fact stands: the women of the american public are elated to have a woman on the ticket. However crunch time has not yet come, let’s see how things will look when the ‘debates’ start.

  5. Centipede
Are you then telling me that american women are so dumb, that once a woman (any woman) is there they would vote for her? This girl has no credibility. She has so much baggage that if she was travelling with all, no airline would accept her.

  6. David.
FYI. Alaska is actually the largest of all the United States, in area. Maybe you were referring to population?

  7. Why do you think the debates will make a difference?

Did you not see the chewing gum popping boy friend sitting in the VIP section at the Republican Convention?

Remember that the Republican Party operates on a core philosophy of being a party of high morals.

Hypocrisy maybe alive and well, we shall see.

  8. This was sent to me by a friend. its how many women in america feel about Palin

Friends, compatriots, fellow-lamenters, We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt sincethe announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate forthe Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision hassurpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce-on thepart of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate-that has areal possibility of becoming fact. Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palinand her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselvesand for our present or future daughters. To date, she is against sexeducation, birth control, the pro-choice platform, environmentalprotection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech (as mayorshe attempted to ban books and fired the librarian who refused), guncontrol, the separation of church and state, and polar bears. To saynothing of her complete lack of experience. We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, amother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solelyas a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for VicePresident. Ms. Palin’s political views are in every way a slap in theface to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers andgreat-grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and that we’ve sodemonstrably benefited from. First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does notdemonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumedthat the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win overwomen voters. We want to disagree, publicly. Therefore, we invite you to reply here with a short, succinct message aboutwhy you, as a woman living in this country, do not support thiscandidate as second-in-command for our nation. Please include your name (last initial is fine), age, and place ofresidence. We will post your responses on a blog called “Women Against SarahPalin,” which we intend to publicize as widely as possible. Please sendus your reply at your earliest convenience-the greater the volume ofresponses we receive, the stronger our message will be. Thank you for your time and action. VIVA! Sincerely, Quinn Latimer and Lyra KilstonNew York, NYwomensaynopalin@gmail.com

  9. Thanks for the feedback but you should know that we don’t stand on semantics.

  10. I tink it funy dat we be for Obama. First, he only half white. It was his people from afrika dat sold my people into slavery. He don’t come from a family dat experienced it here in Barbados or de states. His family come from a wealthy african family, not from us. Where did dey get de money? from selling us. Dat all I have to say.

    ===========================

There is a long held tradition in American electorial politics that the VP nominee becomes the attack dog on the other side’s Presidential nominee, leaving their running mate to look and act Presidential. Sharah Palin thus far is playing that role well.

……Such questions will not be asked in America or be taken seriously if perchance they are.

….The Govenor is no stranger to television, or interviews by Journalist, in fact there are several such events published on Youtube. She can do no worst than Barack has done thus far.

  12. Oh that the american politics have fallen to an all time low. I used to look forward to these elections to hear world policies and strong debates between potential presidents and their V.P. However, this particular elections seem to be focused on lies, smear and downright gutter poiltics which I see as disrespectful to a country that prides itself as the leading nation in the world. What example are they setting. The eastern block is watching.

Your percieved rights , and the opinions of some “international poll” has no legitimacy in America or to Americans, and i say percieved because, as we speak Bajan Academics are pondering if you live in a democracy! and you and i can recount no small number of incidents that questions the availibility of these “rights” you speak about. Obama now understands that his trip and speech in Germany did not go down well with Americans. This country selects its president, no one else.
….anyway I digress, i feel move to yet again contrast some of your comments.

The presidential office is an executive position. In American civics lessons you are thought to view the Mayoral office of a town, and the Governorship of a State as smaller executive versions of the Office of the President. Experience as a Mayor and as a Governor counts, and in this case 18 months executive experience is magnified against the zero executive experience of Joe Biden.

Joe Biden is a Senator from a state with a population of 800k

Sarah Palin is the Governor of a state with a population of 600k

  14. When it comes to foreign relations and policy, Biden has predicted things correctly for the most part over the last 30 years. Biden is no meglomaniac, and he’s ethical and pragmatic. He knows how to make tough decisions, knows how to get bi-partisan consensus, and knows how to help Obama navigate foreign affairs as Obama is perceived as shaky in this regard. As a US citizen, I don’t care for Obama all that much, but I like Biden.

Predicted things “correctly” for 30 years? are you sure? care to name some of these things?

  16. Politics in the US is so controlled and corrupted by the money changers that it would be suicidal take part in this farce. No substance, just a side show. The real show is always behind the curtains.
    .@…Da Tinker
Are you tinkering with your nuts right now? How many years have you been removed from “balls and chains?”. Do you really believe that Obama’s “rich” African family got “rich” out of selling you off and pray tell how much did they actually get for you? And how much did mutant McCain’s family benefit from you being sold off?

  17. Biden was right about Afghanistan, Iraq and de-facto nuclear proliferation, just to name a few things. Admittedly he can be a blowhard, but his intellect stands well.

Biden was right about Afghanistan, Iraq and de-facto nuclear proliferation, just to name a few things. Admittedly he can be a blowhard, but his intellect stands well.
    ===========================
In 1979, he shared Carter’s starry-eyed belief that the fall of the shah in Iran and the advent of the ayatollahs represented progress for human rights. Throughout the hostage crisis, as US diplomats were daily paraded blindfolded in front of television cameras and threatened with execution, he opposed strong action against the terrorist mullahs and preached dialogue.

    * Throughout the 1980s. Biden opposed President Ronald Reagan’s proactive policy against the Soviet Union. Biden was all for détente – which, in practice, meant Western subsidies that would have enabled the moribund USSR to cling to life and continue doing mischief.

    * In 1990, Biden found it difficult to support President George Bush’s decision to use force to kick Saddam Hussein’s army of occupation out of Kuwait.

    * A decade-plus later, the senator did vote for the liberation of Iraq from Saddamite tyranny. But as soon as terrorists started challenging the new democratic system in Iraq, he switched sides and became a critic of the whole war effort. He claimed that the Iraq war was lost and suggested that the US partition the newly liberated country into three or more mini-states.

Biden’s misreading of the situation in Iraq shows that experience is no substitute for judgment. He judged the situation on the basis of headlines and CNN footage – not the long-term, geo-strategic interests of the United States. In short, he lacked what President Harry Truman called “strategic patience.”

Is any of this true? I honestly don’t know!

  19. Adrian –

There is some “truth” in what you wrote – but it’s selective, and devoid of real context. Biden is a good man, one of few who were willing to put their political career on the line in criticizing the “policies and politic of the day.”

  20. An article/video, just out of Alaska shows Sarah Palin telling the Alaska Independence Party at their “08 convention to keep their good work up. This is in response to their breaking away from America. This was just prior to her being considered to be V.P. Apparently, it was on moth balls but some-one got their hands on it.

  21. @The Scout

    Will America care about it?

  22. Yardbroom referred to the unmentionable “R Word”. Here is an article by someone who is not afraid to mention it.

Reason #2 why black people don’t vote for the GOP.

Why can’t you people debate honestly??? My response was directed at your contention that Joe Biden has predicted things (foreign policy) correctly for the past 30 years. Joe Biden’s character as a decent American was not in question. schuuupppsssee.

  24. What a load of crock. That video has always been available. I saw it the very first day i heard Sarah Palin.

If you check that and a number of interested new developments is sporeading like wild fires through america. I think the creditibility of the young lady is in serious question. Every her own party supporters are worried. You do research, check it out.

  27. That article came out less than 2 hrs ago. Some people are behaving like McPaling. Lies and untruths.

  28. Adrian,

    Honest debate? You start.

Biden preaches and practices “strategic restraint.” It isn’t the other way around. I suggest you read more, and not just the blogs.

Reagan’s “proactive” policy, wasn’t. It was noise. The writing was already on the wall for the USSR.

Iran: You seem young not to remember what really happened as to how the Shah really came into power, and how he kept it. It was at best a temporary dictatorship funded by the US, surviving in the face of deep sectarian unrest. It had to be reconciled, and it is being reconciled historically though not in a very clean fashion. Our administration is handling it badly.

Biden knew more than anyone that once the US went into the Middle East, it would launch a 100 year war. Killing the fathers does not make for complacent sons. Hence his restraint. His position on Iraq is fundamentally the same, despite the bumps in the road, despite holes and mishandling of intelligence delivered to his subcommittee. His criticism of tactics and strategy has been continuous.

  29. Didn’t the BU family watch that Sarah Palin interview on ABC with Charlie Gibson? We are sorry to say but this lady is clueless. To think that she has been selected to pander to the party evangelical base because McCain has alienated them at the expense of intellect. Whether a VP’s role is ceremonial for the most part at minimum they should pick somebody who knows where to find Hawaii on the map.

  30. David
Sarah Palin was briefed, briefed and briefed again, the posture was good leaning forward to show genuine interest, repeated first name terms with the interviewer. However, I felt she did not quite know what the “Bush Doctrine” is, and a torrent of words never explained it…she is a candidate for the Vice Presidency of America, not some ordinary Jane.

Perhaps most telling was when she said Russia launched an “unprovoked” attack against Georgia in South Oseitia, really!! when they had no right to.

Yet she states America has “a right” to cross the border into Pakistan without the permission of a friendly country – Pakistan – in pursuit of terrorists.

I am afraid the plot has been lost. If Obama is to lose, let us hope McCain has a presidency without illness.

  31. @Yardbroom

I am afraid the plot has been lost. If Obama is to lose, let us hope McCain has a presidency without illness.

Let us all hope that the profundity of the above statement is appreciated by the American electorate.

  32. I was just reading an article from an Alaskan newspaper. It states that Sarah Palin knows that rape is increasing yearly in Alaska, yet see turns a blind eye to it. In fact Alaska is rated as one of the states with the highest rape ratio in the USA : 1 of 3 female raped per day. Is this the same person who does not believe in abortion, not even for rape? No wonder her 17 yr old is pregnant and that poor boy getting he neck pop because it is her daughter. There probably a lot of unwanted children with no father in that state. Would the V.P spread her beliefs all over USA if she gets in?

  33. I am surprised that the 17 year old unwed daughter’s pregnancy is not an issue. I am sure if one of Senator Obama’s daughters was 17 year old and pregnant and unwed they would have made it an issue, and lambase the entire African race. But it look to me like the white man running scared that is why they turning a blind eye to this situation. Of course she does not believe in abortion for rape victims, andI ama sure that is more true for white women, since the white population is shrinking faster than I can say Barbados.

    ===========================
Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are both inexperience, so goes the argument. I have added that Barack as none and Sarah has a little…..Cannot be refuted.

Obamanites have said that it is OK that their candidate surrounds himself with wise experience council (Biden and 300 strong foreign policy advisers) to that effect.
Sarah Palin who is on a presidential ticket as VP is being caste as not experience enough to be president and the hypothetical of a President McCain dying and she ascending to the Presidency is the fear that we all must be concern with. No fear of inexperience Barack who is running for President but fear for little experience Sarah who MIGHT become the President. Is this the kind of NONSENSE that is as highlighted as nuance? 🙂

  35. Experience of what, Adrian?

  36. @Adrian H

We don’t want to repeat our arguments on the inexperience issue.

We agree that Obama like Palin is inexperience when compared to others before him. The point is Obama has been on the campaign trail, talk shows, written books, and has had to engage the public media over the last 2 years to demonstrate his knowledge. The US public will have no such luxury.

  37. I see ‘pretty face” Sarah Palin(g) is losing her popularity in USA. at last the newness has wore off and people are beginning to see the foney that she really is. She is now rate within 24 hrs as the least popular among the 4 candidates

  38. Adrian Hinds can you please tell me a little about this democracy and in particular the American system of which you are so proud.
In this present credit/finance crisis why is it the poor taxpayers who are losing their homes and jobs while fat cats keep getting massive bonuses and when their mistakes are exposed for all to see we then hear that the state should save their bacon. Some capitalism indeed, they take the profits while the state pick up the risks and the losses. This is a strange kind of Regeanomics programme being run here. Where are all the monetarist economists like Owen and Mascoll? These damn fools are bare jokers. Why our intellectuals and economists are now runnimng for cover by their silence. Is this the system of development we in Barbados are supposed to aspire to. I just hope that they do not ever ask the Barbados government to prop up any of our banks. If they are true disciples of the free market and they pledge allegiance to the Chicago school of economics, then unsuccessive, inefficient, and crooked firms should be run out of town and go to the wall. The true market forces have their own built in methods of correction. Poorly run firms should and must die.
Adrian just one more fraud the American system is prepared to push down the throats of fools that places like Cave Hill produce, mere apes aping their masters. Lets hear your views Adrian and even Yardbroom comments
    Johnnietoobad.

  39. Lady Jahwah, we do not have to go to Obama little daughters, what happen to all the African American and Hispanic young teenagers in New York, in LA, Chicago, Philly or DC that find themselves pregnant. It is always one rule for white Americans and another for all the non white peoples of the world. Such hypocrisy!
