sandy lane

Just read to-days Nation News “Business” Section and wondered how you feel about the reason Sandy Lane has postponed the building of $3 billion worth in condos around the Green Monkey golf course? Do you think that the reason might be a subtle form of intimidation to the present DLP Government that they open Greenland? What makes me laugh is this, it appears from the article that it does not matter to Sandy Lane where the dump is put so long as the smell coming from the St Thomas dump ends and the beautiful people buying the proposed condos do not have to put up with it. And that these Foreigners could care less if the ordinary Bajan who was born in Barbados and has been there for generations before these foreigners came has a dump in their backyard stinking them out or polluting their Environment!

We usually receive many emails and comments from many quarters. We try to read them all in a timely manner and use them to stimulate ideas and or share for public consumption. We take this opportunity to thank you all! Here is one such comment which addresses the perennial matter of Sandy Lane’s investment strategy in Barbados. Is it stretching it to think that the Sandy Lane owners maybe just exercising their right to invest or not to invest given the prevailing condition of the global economy? Our commenter seems to think that the decision maybe linked to the change in government and the recent decision to address the change of role of the Greenland landfill. At the end of the day we would have thought that the people behind Sandy Lane are businessmen and would therefore be inclined to make business decisions.

Having read the comment quoted above a second time, we are mindful of the delicate balance which the government must manage, that is, the need to attract foreign investment and simultaneously satisfy the needs of Barbadians.

According to the newspaper report no reason has been given for the delay in the project by their public relation agent AL Hart. We suspect that Prime Minister Thompson out of courtesy would have received an explanation from the Sandy Lane businessmen. Back in 2004 when the project was proposed Prime Minister Owen Arthur was generous in his praise of the project and the jobs and other benefits which would have been generated as a result. No doubt the subsequent decision by the government to host the World Cup of Golf and other similar events would have been made bearing in mind the commitment by the owners of Sandy Lane to invest significant sums in Barbados.

So the question of the commenter may still be valid. Are we seeing another example of a foreign investor showing annoyance at things not going their way? We have the current industrial matter pending, Mount Stinkeroo/Greenland issue and the fact that new relationships will have to be made now that Prime Minister Owen Arthur and Barney Lynch have vacated the government.

Interesting perspective BU. This is the danger if we rely on foreign investment too much. In the twinkling of an eye it can go.

This simply a friend of the BLP acting in the interest of the BLP.

I have seen it before. remember Intel? Soon after the the BLP lost the Government, Intel pulled out of Barbados.

Sandy Lane is acting in the interest of its buddies in the BLP. Nothing more, nothing less.

  3. Firstly, the sub prime credit crunch has caused a serious drop in second and third recreational homes for sale. This may be temporary with governments actively lowering rates and flooding the market with liquidity.

Secondly. if Sandy Lane expects to be a long term player in Barbados, they need to be part of the long term environmental solutions and this does not involve placing a dump in in one of the most ecologically sensitive areas of the island.

They have the experts and engineers to assist the government with broader strategies such as active recycling, incineration etc.

The government needs to listen to everyone and make them take ownership of the solutions.

Is the Barbados government willing to look at all kinds of immediate solutions or will they need to lock the civil servants who have been promoting Greenland for the past 15 years in a closet?

  4. It is understandable that Sandy Lane will bring pressure to bear to get their pollution problem solved. Everybody tends to put their interests first at the expense of others.

The smell is one thing – poisons in the aquifer are another. These things can devastate home prices.

  5. Keltruth:

I would go further, poisons in the acquifer can kill Bajans! Forget the devastation of home prices. Who is going to eat food watered with toxic water?

With regard to the smell, anyone who creates garbage but dont want to smell it when the wind changes, should stop creating it themselves.

  6. Has anyone considered that the fortunes of the businessmen behind Sandy Lane may have taken a beating as a result of the volatility in the world’s financial market.

US holdings would have deflated significantly in value…agree?

  7. The trouble start when the Zoning for that area was changed from a Zone one.

What did Owen Arthur say last week. Blame him for everything that happened during his watch

Before you wrote your political twist, did you check with the downturn with the US economy and the collapse of Bear Stearns.

Three billion dollars in Condos minus longterm investors will be a serious economic risk during a downfall of any economy.

If we try to reduce everything in Barbados to “politics” we are only deluding ourselves. The Sandy Lane investors are able to vote with their feet, but for those of us who have to live, and, yes, DIE, here, we need to subject the issues that BU’s post has raised to a more discriminating analysis. And if anyone raises the question of where to start the analysis, I say, at the beginning!

  10. Linchh why don’t you lead the discussion. The fact that we are having this kind of conversation suggests that we need to examine our national strategic plan. No longer can we base our long term viability of our nation on the sandy relationship of a few opportunists!

Linchh why don’t you lead the discussion. The fact that we are having this kind of conversation suggest that we need to examine our national strategic plan. No longer can we base our long term viability of our nation on the sandy relationship of a few opportunists!

    David:

I find your implication that the “sandy (lane) relationship of a few opportunists” is not a viable basis for the long-term development of our island nation amusing. Your metaphor invokes the biblical story in which the wise man is compared to the foolish one, who, you will recall, built his house on sandy ground. (Matthew 7:24-29 ;NIV) You may remember that some members of the congregation walked out on Pastor William Cuke when he preached on this theme at Carew’s funeral in 1994.

And while on the subject of Sandy’s ground you should note, too, that the floods of Weston came after it was washed away by King Seymour, who ought to have seen more of the future of Barbados that now confounds our blessed Rock.

Which brings me to said king’s National Strategic Plan that I have always regarded as akin to a rocking trojan horse, which, when you say “giddiyap” springs all sorts of viruses on you.

The now defunct Owen Arthur administration placed a great deal of emphasis on producing a document that turned out not to be a PLAN, and which was neither national nor strategic. In fact, anyone who understands anything about planning will tell you that the so-called NSP, was nothing more than a distraction that prevented the BLP from seeing the real issues that were of concern to the majority of ordinary Barbadians.

I hope, sincerely, that the new David Thompson led administration will go back to the basics, and examine the fundamental tenets of people-centered development. Strategies for promoting the type of foreign investment that the current format of Sandy Lane Hotel represents may not be incompatible with P-CD, if we carefully work out our own salvation.

    Nuff said! I gone!

Sandy Lane to close for refurbishment

    April 18, 2008

    By Gay Nagle Myers

Sandy Lane in Barbados will close from Aug. 31 to Oct. 3 for an extensive renovation.

The luxury resort last completed a multimillion-dollar overhaul and expansion in 2001.

“We’ve done some changes since 2001 but not in a comprehensive way,” said Claire Jordan, Sandy Lane’s director of sales and marketing. “Sandy Lane always wants to stay ahead of the curve as a contemporary, elegant resort. This redo will take us to the next level.”

The changes include new soft goods, lighting fixtures and bigger flat-screen TVs in the 112 guest rooms. Two new Rolls-Royce limousines will be added for guest transfers. Also, Sandy Lane will be working on a new line of treatments and products in the spa, and new furnishings and decor in public areas.

The resort’s Bajan Blue restaurant on the beach level, one of four restaurants on the property, will undergo a total overhaul.

“The name will change, the new design will bring parts of the kitchen and large grill into the dining area, the menu will feature multi-cultural cuisine, seating will be indoors as well as outside and we will offer a wine store right at the restaurant,” Jordan said.

Close to 50% of Sandy Lane’s business is from the U.K., 30% is from the U.S. and the rest is from Canada and Europe.

Repeat guests comprise 40% of the year-round business and 100% during the Christmas and Easter holidays. Agents and tour operators account for about 35% of all bookings.
