Barbados General Election Watch

The coming General Election constitutionally due early next year promises to be one of the most interesting in our history.

Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart despite a feeble challenge to his leadership manifested by the effort of the Eager 11 and baring no further attempts is expected to lead the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) into the next general election.

Leader of the Opposition Owen Arthur who relinquished the leadership of the party to Mia Mottley after the election defeat in 2008 is back after winning support from his parliamentary colleagues. He too is expected to lead the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) into the next election.

The other political parties – People Empowerment Party (PEP) and People Democratic Congress) PDC – have not been able to offer a credible third party option.

The DLP are years behind in their online campaign and messaging. Add that to their muddled physical and real world messaging and you can see they have a problem. Their profiles havent been updated, their site is updated once in a blue moon, their facebook page leaves alot to be desired (so does the BLP by the way) and their blog hasn’t been active in 3+ years. To the BLP’s credit at least they are keeping their main site up, alive, and teeming with current information and video.

Good luck getting DLP politicians (except Kellman and maybe Irene) to interact or even post credible information online. Says alot in this day and age, doesn’t it.

    Advantage – BLP big time.

“Overall, we are happy with our investments in Barbados…and we see the island as an attractive place to invest,” he said.
“Regionally, economies are experiencing a difficult time. BARBADOS IS NOT UNIQUE. We in Trinidad have a stagnant economy and negative growth for the past two years.
“There are challenges everywhere but we take a long-term view of our investments and still we see – in the Caribbean- BARBADOS AS THE MOST ATTRACTIVE ECONOMY”
Satement by Trinidadian businessman and former President of Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce Christian Mouttet taken from backpage of Nation on Wednesday, May 9, 2012.

The Barbados economy is not tanking, it has been stabilised and with a pickup in the US market improving, a stronger economy in 2013 and beyond is very likely. Barbados is in good hands.

Another addition you can soon use is a “ticker” or bar or row which tracks the safe seats and the toss up seats for each side based on the views of bloggers and even your personal opinion. Should make for some interesting numbers and shifts as current events continue to play out.

go figure, Sinckler comes out gunning today to dismiss Mascoll’s assertions about the 183 million but says nothing about UWI fees owed or the Auditor General’s report or the 117% D to GDP that turned into 7- something % on account of domestic borrowing. . 21. “The other political parties – People Empowerment Party (PEP) and People Democratic Congress) PDC – have not been able to offer a credible third party option”

    David,

While the PDC cannot speak for the PEP but only for ourselves at this time, let us again tell many Barbadians, via this medium, that we are in this political business of the people of Barbados for the long haul.

We have thought from the start that it would take a reasonable period of time for us to develop into a force to be reckoned with, within the main stream of the political society of Barbados.

Moreover, we will continue to encourage, ensure and grow support for this party among esp. the very politically conscious, people focussed and purposely steeled of the masses and middle classes of this country.

We have the political resolve and maturity to understand and accept this position.

But, as we have previously said on this blog we have recognized that greater and greater numbers of Barbadians are indeed so sick, tired, frustrated and fed up with these two old discredited DLP/BLP factions, that some of them and many more people than before are crying out that they must be permanently removed from the political landscape of this country.

For, not only have they been destroying many of the cherished affairs, hopes and dreams of the Barbadian people, but they have also for a long time been demonstrating no political vision, no political perspicacity, and have been evolving no bold and exciting people nation building strategies for helping to thrust this country onto a higher stage of wholistic development.

Certainly, in the fundamental social human interest of the Barbadian people, the DLP and BLP must be put back into a state of non-existence – exactly were they better belong!!

Anyhow, in any circumstance where many of the commenters and readers of many comments and posts on this blog site may have missed this one, there has been the formation of another party in Barbados: The New Barbados Kingdom Alliance led apparently by Mr. Lynroy Scantlebury.

We commend the members of this party for taking the opportunity to form this party – which many other citizens also have the opportunity to do – and we say to them that they too must be prepared to politically dig in for the many battles that lie ahead.

So, David, we would have wished that by now you would have long understood that we are helping in the building of a serious political culture – which can also be made up of any number of serious parties – but a serious political culture that will eventually not have as its main critical reference point the outdated DLP and BLP; and we would have wished that by now that you would have known that by simply saying that we have not offered a credible alternative will not in the slightest way deter us and many other people from moving onto a higher stage of existence – beyond the decadent corrupt DLP and BLP.

Would you not also help the people get there???

    So long.

  24. @PDC

You have to get out there and connect with the people by delivering a message that resonates.

  25. David; re. your 9:13 pm post where you said:
PDC; You have to get out there and connect with the people by delivering a message that resonates.

The PDC has been delivering one standard message on BU for several months now. That message appears to be “Both the DLP and BLP have failed barbados badly, both are corrupt, both are incapable of leading Barbados in these times that require a different vision and a new political leadershop that is competent, honest, hard working and forward looking.

That message has apparently not resonated with the BU family as far as I can see and there are several reasons why it hasn’t.

I wonder if our regular and irregular BU posters could suggest if that message itself has the potential to actually resonate with the Barbadian public and if so what has to be done to package it to resonate and start a trend that would allow our political system to once again move Barbados rapidly forward. I know Bushtea will propose his Cooperative model. But could someone outline a strategy that could realistically result in a drastic improvement of the political model under which we operate here in a relatively short time frame?

The Tea Party movement in the USA is perhaps an example of a flawed but demographically attractive message that resonated with a large chunk of the US body politic and appears to have borne some fruit in a short space of time. Are there lessons that could be learned from that model and how it was and is being executed in the USA that could assist us in turning around Barbados, if it indeed needs turning around?

  26. To share an observation:

It is clear that the DLP is on the defensive in the social media space. Last time around it was the reverse. Surely it is a case of as time passes the government retreats from positions held while in opposition. Does anyone believe it will be any different if the BLP wins the next general elections?

A point for discussion is the role social media will play going forward to spot a light on the workings on many areas of government which have historically not seen the light.

  27. David; I think that when the bell rings the politicians on both sides will have no option but to use the opportunity provided to them to get a few votes (and even one vote is of importance) by dropping in to the BU election rumshop and putting his or her case.

Your posting of the affidavit in the case involving Cheltenham and Leroy Parris and others seems to be a small window into what is possibly a previously unheard of role for the blogs sector of the social media. Of course it might also spell some danger too as the money people are not likely to play dead in a situation where their credibility is seriously threatened. That affidavit exposes the dirtiness in the system for all to see.

    Its early days yet.

  28. Welcome Sen Garner to BU, I hope we will be hearing more from you. However, what is the mood in your camp? is the entire group supportive of FS? Do you realise that unless you rid the party of this man you will loss the next electiomns. Incedentally. i have tipped to won St Andrew even though like lest elections, it wil be very clyou would make a better senior minister than Suckoo.000the thing is, the chance of winning the next elections are very slim, unless there is a drastic about-turn, which includes sacking FS..

  29. There is an obvious swing against the Gov. If it is greater than 3% the DLP will definitely lose the next general election. They have in no way tackled the problem of INFLATION and the Economy in general. They have spent all their time and energies criticizing the B.L.P., rather than getting on with the business of advancing this country.

  32. The arrogance of the BLP candidates and their supporters is astounding but expected. They beleive that with a global recession, they will sit back with the piss poor group of candidates and Bajans will come running to them.
The BLP is telling the people of Barbados that a global recession of historic proportions will not impact Barbados. What nonsense!
Even Trinidad has been hard hit. Do not be fooled by the spin!
The government has done as well or better than any other government regionally in fighting the turbulent global economic winds.
Jamaica,Antigua, St. Kitts , St. Vincent – all in the hands of the IMF-
    The DLP running those countries?Stupse!
Te BLP spindoctors want the public to believe that it is because of the DLP but that argument does not hold water when you examine what is going on regionally and with our trading partners.
The DLP government has stabilised the economy, protected and maintained adequate foreign reserves stocks in an environment where tourists are not spending, strengthened the social saftey net, protected pensioners, disabled and unemployed from the global onslaught of higher oil prices, maintained employment levels in the public sector (some people seem to forget that public sector workers are also consumers in the economy). The crime rate has not exploded, our education and health sectors are functioning as well as they have ever been. The government has done well in the circumstances.
I repeat, there is no magic bullet solution out there that the BLP has that nobody in the world does not know about. These times call for maturity but some people continue to try to sell the idea that once the tourists hear the BLP in power, they will suddenly fly down to Barbados , start spending like crazy and the economy will boom- If you beleive that, make an appointment in Black Rock.
The government has done well in the crcumstances.

Cheezon ..this shows just what i mean…Why is Hartley not engaging or rather dis-engaging ?

  35. @!

Time will confirm if you are correct but voters will go for the feel good factor. Many remember that they had it under the BLP. The fact that there is an economic recession may resonate with some but the reality here is that they will be a national swing, we don’t know by what %. Based on the % swing it will take out marginal seats. Whether the incumbents are doing good work maybe irrelevant.

The question is if the BLP will contract CHAPPO to do a poll given their relationship with Peter Wickham.

  36. “The DLP government has stabilised the economy, protected and maintained adequate foreign reserves stocks in an environment where tourists are not spending, strengthened the social safety net, protected pensioners, disabled and unemployed from the global onslaught of higher oil prices, maintained employment levels in the public sector (some people seem to forget that public sector workers are also consumers in the economy).”
You people behave as if these are magical things that the government has done. Barbados is a mixed economy, meaning that goods and services are produced by the government and private sector. The government provides goods and services to protect the vulnerable, because if produced by the private sector, they would be too expensive.
Recession or not, the government is doing what it HAS to do.

  37. Does the private sector have confidence in this government?

  38. “The DLP government has stabilised the economy, protected and maintained adequate foreign reserves stocks in an environment where tourists are not spending, strengthened the social saftey net, protected pensioners, disabled and unemployed from the global onslaught of higher oil prices, maintained employment levels in the public sector (some people seem to forget that public sector workers are also consumers in the economy).”

Higher food prices, higher water bills, higher telephone bills, higher prices for cooking fuel, higher bus fares, payment for medication do not indicate strengthening or protecting anyone. If tourists are not spending and exports are not up how have they maintained FOREX? Maintained or increased?

The BLP spindoctors want the public to believe that it is because of the DLP but that argument does not hold water when you examine what is going on regionally and with our trading partners.

Why is it all of a sudden international conditions are responsible for local situations, while pre-2008 it was collusion, for instance, that kept food prices high and not the increasing cost of commodities? Who was spinning then?

This post sounds very similar to a regular caller to Brasstacks: “The government has done well in the circumstances.” lol

  39. During the earlier years of this administration, Andy Armstrong, president of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce, was seemingly an ardent supporter of their policies, and would endorse and articulate them, in whatever forum he was in. Recently, he has been critical, not upfront, but innuendo.
However, based on the views coming from the manufacturing and tourism sectors, I am of the opinion that the private sector’s confidence in this administration is fading.

  40. @ Enuff
You mean that ignorant woman who sounds as though she has a cold that calls the call-in-program everyday to tell us that everything the DLP do is right and talks about free secondary education? With the frequency she that is on the radio and the latitude she is given, especially by Maureen Holder, I think that hers is a paid commercial by the DLP for the DLP.
I know that people would like a political party, but when a person could be so fanatical, it is sick. Similar to a Muslim extremist, she and the one called Rawle are DLP extremist.

Well said. Let’s move the argument past what a government is expected and obligated to do and dig into what they promised and pledged to do; criticised the past government of not doing; and accused the past government of doing wrongly. Therein lies the vote swayer.

    @!
Can you point me to any economic or financial policies of this government that has helped ALL Barbadians? And while you’re at it, which policies stabilised the economy? This would be a nice debate point since the same said things you glorify at the macro level may be the same said anchor that weighs you down in the polling booth.

    Thanks for your above commentaries.

But we know that the majority of people submitting views on here are mature people and stiffen in many of their views and types of crosss interactions and are either for the DLP/BLP.

We have even met or already know some of these people like CCC, Tell Me Why, Ian Bourne, etc.

So that even though we expect that there will NOT be many visibly supportive comments by many commenters on here in response to our messages, we know that these messages are greatly resonating in their hearts and souls even when many of these people are supposedly committed to this joke political system in Barbados.

But the question remains – how can you all assist the broad masses and middle classes in dispensing with ot ousting these two discredited parties

  45. @ David

The PM was clever enough to see that the sole intention of the Opposition in creating the Eager 11 hoax was to prime the PM into wholesale firing within his Cabinet, with the attendant consequences. Look at the difference between Tillman Thomas and PM Stuart.

Every action has an opposite and equal reaction, something PM Stuart appreciates and PM Thomas does not. That notwithstanding be assured the PM Stuart’s refusal to fire any of the Eager 11 Cabinet members is not rooted in political survival but more importantly in keeping Barbados stable as he knows that growth with live along instability.

  46. @Rodney

Point taken but how does he deal with the languishing perception in the public that it remains an issue? The perception is fueled every time Richard Sealy is appointed to act as deputy in place of Ronald Jones. Appreciate his focus to keep Barbados stable bit whither the political dimension?

  47. @Rodney
were it a hoax, could you explain Sinckler’s interview?
Also, firing ministers is a last resort. Explaining that there are differences in opinion (as any mature group would have) and that as a mature, responsible and forward thinking government we have ironed them out complete would have been a far better strategic move. Instead, we have as David said the perception, the silence, the knowledge of discontent and “rifts” and an uncertainty as to candidates being able to depend on national momemtum to help them in their seats.

Silence is sometimes golden but it can also be a golden anchor.

As for Tilman he’s even drier and less inspiring than Freundel. Only a matter of time

  48. @ Observing
That claim of the ‘Eager 11’ being a hoax had me dumbfounded. The Dems just spinning and if that is their strategy to win the election they will surely get whitewash.

  49. Owen Arthur = tried, tested & proven but you have to take him, warts and all.
Freundel Stuart = trying, committed and honest but you have to take him, slow as he is or people make him out to be.
