Today (16 February 2026) the other ministers of government of Barbados and Senators will be sworn in by the President of Barbados Jeffery Bostic. Prime Minister Mottley and Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams have already had the honour. For the third time since 2018, there are no elected opposition members of parliament. Therefore, a Leader of the Opposition cannot be selected, required by the Constitution of Barbados.

In 2019 the Reverend Joseph Atherley ‘crossed’ the floor. He formed The People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP). In 2024 Ralph Thorne ‘crossed’ and became a member of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP). This time around loud whispers can be heard – who will be the one to cross to fill the important post of Leader of the Opposition.

Prime Minister Mottley is attempting to quell growing cynicism. Concerns about the robustness of our democratic system have been raised. In an early post-election statement, she voiced that anti-defection legislation will be introduced. By the way, has The Integrity in Public Life Bill/Integrity in Public Life Act (2023) been proclaimed?

During any period in which there is a vacancy in the office of Leader of the Opposition by reason of the fact that no person is both qualified in accordance with this Constitution for and willing to accept, appointment to that office, the President shall—

(a) act in his discretion in the exercise of any function in respect of which it is provided in this Constitution that the President shall act in accordance with the advice of the Leader of the Opposition; and

(b) act on the recommendation of the Prime Minister in the exercise of any function in respect of which it is provided in this Constitution that the President shall act on the recommendation of the Prime Minister after consultation with the Leader of the Opposition.”

One of the biggest ironies is that our newly minted President of Barbados will have the awesome responsibility of selecting opposition Senators. A situation made interesting because Bostic just retired from active politics in 2022 from serving in the Mottley Cabinet.

Barbadians voted to reelect a Mottley led government for a third time. However, the result has been coloured by questions about an inaccurate voter’s list. Those chomping on the red meat are happy with the result, others are very concerned about a fault line that has appeared in our system of democracy. We are seeing the solidification of a dominant Barbados Labour Party in Barbados.

Barbados now enters yet another parliamentary term without an elected Opposition, a situation that continues to expose a fracture in our governance framework. The Constitution provisions for an Opposition Leader for good reason: a dissenting voice in the House is non negotiable in an adversarial system. When that role must be filled through workarounds, rather than democratic selection by Barbadians, it signals that we have a structural problem.

I  hope the BLP govt makes parliamentary reform a front burner issue in this term. I think most people thought that the 30-0 situation in parliament was transient i.e. I thought it would last, at most, two general elections. Even before this. The “first past the post” system always had it weaknesses.

In my opinion, it is time to implement some form of proportional representation. Since we have a bicameral legislature and we don’t directly elect senators, proportional representation can easily be implementing in the senate, The “first past the post system” in the lower house can continue as is in the Lower House. It would be a less complicated but straightforward solution have major parties( based on votes) be represented in parliament…

It is worth repeating that we have a President who only recently stepped away from partisan politics that must now shoulder the responsibility of appointing opposition Senators – even as the public awaits clarity on promised anti‑defection legislation and the long‑stalled proclamation of integrity laws. Is it any wonder public apathy and cynicism towards the electoral system is at an all time high?

    Professor supports plan for anti-defection legislation

    DIRECTOR of the School for Graduate Studies and Research at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Professor Dwayne Devonish, does not see anything sinister in the proposed anti-defection legislation.

    A guest on Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks Sunday radio call-in programme yesterday, he said too often people felt that once a political leader said or did something, it automatically meant there was some kind of untoward, underlying motive for their opponents.

    “This is something that is going to be very controversial, the whole crossing of the floor. I said, ‘Let me just read this objectively’. I think the intent was that, on the one hand, you have an MP (Member of Parliament), and we recognise that MPs do not serve parties because it’s the Westminster purist model [where] the MPs are there for the people. It is their electorate, their constituency, so how is it that you’re trying to ‘fool’ them into account, or you’re trying to block them from crossing? No, I didn’t see it like that,” he told listeners.

    In the wake of the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) third consecutive 30-0 General Election victory last Wednesday, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said her Government would be seeking to introduce legislation which would require MPs who leave the party on whose ticket they were elected, to seek a fresh mandate from constituents via a by-election.

    Breach of contract

    Devonish said an MP crossing the floor could be tantamount to a breach of contract.

    “At the end of the day, everybody votes for different reasons. I may vote, for example, for the MP because of the party mandate. Now, let me give you a case in point. The MP crosses over, now that seat is still his or hers, but let’s say those people in that constituency are left abandoned in some way, because the MP now is working on a particular way of probably looking at chasing a seat for the next election cycle and so on. Then it is almost to me a slap in the face,” he said.

    The professor gave an example of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) winning four seats, but then those MPs opting to join the BLP afterwards. In such a case, he added, those who voted for the DLP members would be up in arms and asking how this could be allowed. He also gave other possibilities.

    “You could have legislation where you have a recall initiative. I’ve heard this from Professor Don Marshall, an excellent recommendation. What happens in British Columbia if there’s dissatisfaction with your MP? There’s an initiation that the electorate or the constituents can actually make, where they can facilitate a recall initiative. And if that petition reaches, let’s say, 40 per cent of the registered electorate, it then signals a by-election.

    “So it could be like that. I don’t think . . . that was advanced by the Prime Minister in any way. I think we have to take our time and see what it looks like,” he said.

    Two seats in Senate

    Another issue was Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley indicating she was again willing to offer two seats in the Senate to the losing parties, something she has done after every 30-0 election victory, but has not been accepted.

    “I think it’s more to have a sustainable opposition voice,” Devonish said.

    Moderator, attorney Kristin Turton, said she too saw no reason why the offer should not be accepted.

    “So she’s offering to change the law, and to be honest, I don’t necessarily have a difficulty with that. I actually think that we should be giving more consideration to how opposition voices can be officially involved in the process. If I were in the [DLP] and the offer was being made, I would accept it. I was actually a little surprised that it was rejected on the last occasion,” she said.

    On integrity legislation, Devonish said he was wholeheartedly in support of it, but cautioned that there needed to be the necessary enforcement.

    “I think integrity legislation is absolutely critical . . . [but] I dare say, though, that with integrity legislation, we also have to put in place our institutional readiness . . . . I find that oftentimes we have legislation on the books but there’s still a lot of missing parts, especially enforcement. It doesn’t help that we have legislation in whatever area . . . and then we fall short when it comes to implementation,” he said.(CA)

    The opposition ALONE is to blame for this situation. They have appointed a person convicted of corruption as their vice-president.

    The solution cannot therefore be to grant the criminal opposition a voice in parliament. The solution must be to ban the opposition, since this opposition undermines true democracy, integrity and the honour of this great nation.

    MOTTLEY-CREW THINKS IT CAN GET AWAY WITH MURDER – BUT THEN IT MAY BE, AS THERE ARE NO RIGHTEOUS, VIRULENT, BOMBASTIC VOICES ON THAT GOD-FORSAKEN ISLAND

    Look folks, this distinction is crucial, as the “DELEGATE MODEL”, posits that an (S)elected official is expected to vote strictly according to the wishes of their constituents, acting as a direct mouthpiece for them!!!

    In the “REPRESENTATIVE PURIST MODEL”, vis-a-vie, (THE UK SYSTEM), as opined by Prof. Devonish, an MP is elected to use their own judgment & conscience to make decisions on behalf of their constituents for the duration of their term.

    As the House of Commons Library explains, while a voter’s choice may be influenced by a candidate’s party label, once elected, MPs are constitutionally free to develop their own arguments & allegiances, until they must face the electorate again at the next general election…

    The reasoning as to why “IT IS NOT A CONTRACT” – is to understand why “IT IS NOT A BREACH”, we have to look at what an MP’s election is based on…

    “IT IS NOT A LEGAL CONTRACT WITH THE PARTY OR WITH VOTERS”, (as a clear distinction), for an MP is not (s)”ELECTED” on a “LEGALLY BINDING EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT” with their political party!!!

    The only “CONTRACT” is the “SOCIAL & POLITICAL ONE” one with their “CONSTITUENTS”, who are free to pass their own judgment on the MP’s actions @”THE BALLOT BOX” in the next election!!!

    “THE RECALL OF MP(s) ACT 2015, does not allow “VOTERS 2 TRIGGER” a by-election simply because, “OR EVEN IF” their MP changes parties and/or “CROSSSES THE FLOOR”!!!

    A recall can only be triggered for “SPECIFIC SERIOUS OFFENCES”, such as a “PRISON SENTENCE” as a (LOT OF THESE DIRTY BASTERDS NEED 2 GO 2 JAIL), and/or a significant “SUSPENSION” from the House of Parliament!!!

    The “SEAT BELONGS TO THE MP”, “NOT THE BLOODY PARTY”!!!

    ANY CONSTITUTIONAL SO-CALLED “EXPERTS” WHO WANT TO HAVE AN ARGUMENT ON THIS ISSUE – FEEL FREE!!!

    The #UK uses a “FIRST-PAST-THE-POST” (FPTP) electoral system….

    In this system, voters (S)elect a “SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL” to “REPRESENTATIVE” their geographical constituency…

    As a result, the parliamentary “SEAT” is constitutionally considered to “BELONG” to the “INDIVIDUAL MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT”, not the “STINKING PARTY” they stood for!!!

    This is different from many countries with “PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION” (PR) systems, where the seat is considered the “PROPERTY OF THE PARTY”, & an MP who “DEFECTS” would automatically lose it!!!

    IF THE MOTTLEY-CREW GOV* WANTS 2 ADOPT SUCH A SYSTEM – THEN SAY SO & STOP WITH THE “SHYTE POLYTRICKS” – WIELDING UNJUST POWER TO SHOW THAT YOUR ARSE IS BROAD

    Any MP crossing the floor in the British Parliament is not a breach of a formal contract, but a “PROFOUND POLITICAL ACT”!!!

    It is permitted by “CENTURIES” of parliamentary tradition & “CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLE”, which prioritise an MP’s role as a “REPRESENTATIVE WITH INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT”!!!

    However, this “FREEDOM” must be balanced by the ultimate democratic “SANCTION” – the need to “SEEK” re-election & face the “JUDGMENT” of the voters who “SENT” them to Parliament in the first place – WHENEVER” the next (S)election is forthcoming!!!

    Since #EpsteinsDeparture (MAKE OF THAT WHAT YOU WILL), billionaire #StephenDeckoff was able to purchase the islands #LittleStJames & #GreatStJames because they were put up for sale by Epstein’s estate, after his 2019 dubious “DEPARTURE”!!!

    In May 2023, Deckoff, through his investment firm #SDnvestments, bought both islands for $60 million, about half the initial $125 million asking price. The sale was part of a broader settlement between Epstein’s estate & the U.S. Virgin Islands GOV*, which required that “HALF” the proceeds, some $30 million, be paid to the territory to fund victim services!!!

    Publications like the “ROBB REPORT”, which covered the “BONDS CAY” listing & Richard Branson’s properties, are valuable resources for “TRACKING HIGH-END REAL ESTATE TRANSACTION”, across the Caribbean!!!

    In some jurisdictions, it is possible to search local corporate records to find the beneficial owners of companies that hold “ISLAND TITLES”, though this often requires significant effort & local knowledge, as many of these are held by “SHELL COMPANIES”!!!

    It is being reported that “YOUNG CHILDREN” are coming up “MISSING” in the Caribbean, especially around places like ANTIGUA*, ST. KITT’S & “ELSEWHERE”!!!

    AFRIKA* has also been an “AXIS OF MAJOR INTEREST” given flight logs in the Epstein files!!!

    From the perspective of the High Whites, Big Sinck did everything right with the national bankruptcy in 2018. The black masses have never been more dependent than they are today.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Frundel Stuart soon becomes Minister of Finance.

    The demise of the DLP as a result of its unprecedented rejection at the polls is partly attributed to Sinckler. To deposit him in the bowels of a BLP cabinet leaves a bitter after taste.

    I little slow so help me understand this. The man that crippled the NISSS fund and holds the award for being the worst minister of finance under the DLP, has now reincarnated under the BLP as a minster, having not contested the elections? Pun top of dat he is not given no fu fu ministry either, but a big up important one. So how wunna Bs that win seats feel bout dat after going out there and working hard canvassing for a seat?

    I missing something here clearly cause I can’t see the logic in this at all at all. What has this man done that we don’t know bout that has qualified him to being appointed to such a position and elevation to greatness under this party? All this without even gaining 1 vote from the electorate?

    David help me wid dis. I so confused here I would even tek guidance from Enuf or John 2 on this happening. Lol

    The (UN)holy consequences of when wealth & power unite or collide without countervailing forces, the results are predictable, where “REGULATORY CAPTURE”, “TAX INVERSION”, “INEQUALITY OF POLICY”, & DEMOCRATIC EROSION”, means that agencies meant to restrain corporate excess become dominated by the very industries they regulate!!!

    This is not the first job she gave to Sinckler.

    Some here had argued vehemently that the defeated DLPites had to be washed from the DLP by the blood of the lamb.

    However, when Mottley, the almighty, brings them back from the politically dead they are reincarnated as if Jesús.

    OSA warned us about these interlocking relationships in a case where Mottley and Sinckler were entering parliament as man and man in neptial.

    And its true, though not the kind of expert one wants as a minister of finance, he know a bit about international trade issues. However Barbados has very little to trade. This job is just another pre-retirement plan for a friend of Mottley. A zero sum game for the people of Barbados. Maybe, it is the DLP again which must open up it’s bossom to embrace another defection/s to lead the opposition. For this will not set well with dyed-in-the-wool Bees.

    I am not jumping to no conclusions, I am waiting for the political Guru Enuff to explain to an untrained party person like me, what goes into a decision like this. Why has the boss lady resurrected Sinkyuh the last DLP MOF, to such a level as an unelected member of the BLP? I wonder if he is a paid up party member yet? Anyhow dont let me stray from the point. Are they not persons who have been here for the last 4 years and active in the BLP party, whose loyalty and tenure far surpasses Sinks, that are not worthy of consideration? While the faithful servants here were working hard and eating at local roadside establishments, was the divine one not in New York dining at their finest establishments? To just arrive back here days before elections and “brugdung” just so hold this big job, It got muh confused!

    Anyhow mistress I still grateful that wunna did note create a new ministry called MINISTRY OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND INVESTMENT PLANNING FOR THE NISSS FUNDS and give him to run, so thanks for not doing dat! Promise me yuh will keep him far from the NISS door too please, actually if you could keep him off Lower Collymore Rock Road and its environs all together even driving, nuff of we would sleep better at night!

    Coincidentally, Ralph Thorne was AMONG those “people in red shirts running around and shouting about the lost decade” as well.

    Not only did he subsequently REPLACE his red shirt with one that’s yellow, and was WARMLY EMBRACED and elected as PRESIDENT by members of the SAME political party he PREVIOUSLY accused of being responsible for the “lost decade,”……

    …… he PRESENTED that party as the SOLUTION to Barbados’ socio-economic problems, and was beaten 30-0 in the process.

    Under those circumstances, isn’t “Laughing stock: a person or thing subjected to general mockery or ridicule,” EQUALLY APPLICABLE to Thorne also?

    Rather than being SELECTIVE in my criticisms of the BLP and DLP, I prefer to acknowledge the fact that there aren’t any significant political, philosophical and ideological differences between both political parties.
