“Canadian for Canadians” is all I have been hearing lately. Nationalistic and true, but also the very opposite of past economic and political policies Canada and the world espoused. Once not long ago we all were moving towards a Global Village, a Global Centered Economy where our natural resources and agricultural might feed the world. Then tariffs became America’s weapon of choice and Canada realized we were going to war. Sounds silly but the image of The Proud Male Leaf standing up to the ravenous Eagle was an image I found difficult to imagine. How can Canadians fight a war with our greatest of economic partners?
Thoughts of Richard Rohmer’s books Ultimatum came to mind illustrating how with other nations assistance Canada was able to withstand an American invasion. And the Yankees tried not once but a number of times both in books and historically as well. The Finnian’s under American Command tried, as too America directly during both the American Revolutionary War and The War of 1812. Rumor has it that President Roosevelt thought of invading and annexing Canada right after WW2, seeing Canadians as a threat. Yes Canada had a large Airforce and one of the largest Navies on the planet. It feels good believing these Yankee’s were actually afraid of Canada. That feeling does not exist today however.
America has the Mightiest Armed Forces on the planet, bought and used by its great corporations to extend its power globally. While the American Mid-West and Southern Plains experience high unemployment, a high cost of living for their wage poor and rising costs everywhere the American Administration continues to collect nearly a $Trillion from former economic and political allies.
Is America short sighted? Well we all dislike the idea of a 5-10-20 year plan don’t we? We want immediate gratification. So too America’s Corporate World. They arrived at a idea based on paying off America’s Debt quickly, not over time. Sure people all over the world and domestically will suffer, but so long as profits were made, Oh Well!
While President Trump claims foreigners stole American jobs, the proof is available folks. *American Corporations initiated and profited greatly from their entanglement with Asian Manufacturing Partners who built cheaply. These Corporations charged their customers often multiplying their costs many fold, drawing massive profits from the same people who are suffering today. Don’t Blame Asia folks. Put the blame upon all the Wealthiest of Americans whose names ring out like American Royalty. Blame Them!
What can Canadians do during this war of economic attrition? Small and Medium Sized firms will have to survive concentrating on Canadian and global marketplaces. Large Corporations with heavy purse strings will work with their American and Global Patrons . Who will survive America’s unwanted onslaught? The wealthy, the well established and the most connected. All others will possibly wither and fade away over time. Even if the Canadian Federal and Provincial Governments throw money at the problem, how long will it last? How long can governments withstand the need to increase their taxes on us all? Truly we are living through a conflict of attrition, where dog will eat dog allowing its ignorance of the effects upon us all from ever raising its head. Corporate Ignorance exists with good reason.
Only profits count folks, so be profitable for your own benefit.
