As Barbados continues to reel from the carnage left by the criminal element and the Barbados Police Service (BPS) scramble from pillar to post in a frantic effort to serve and protect our once idyllic island paradise – the fear of living ‘our’ way of life has been irrapably compromised. Grave doubts have arisen whether the leadership of the island with the support of civic minded citizens have the ability to bring the crime wave under control.

It is Saturday, 21 June 2025, and the blogmaster taps away at tired keys on a laptop, each keystroke a routine that feels less like expression and more like a hollow action. In recent months, the blogmaster’s laptop has become a chronicle of seemingly robotic insights regarding rising crime situation in the country. The latest reported shooting in the Prime Minister’s constituency at 5th Avenue, Peterkin Road, Bank Hall, St. Michael fuels another numb thought.

The rampant violent crime has tainted Barbados’ reputation, once known for safety and serenity. Should it continue on current trajectory, it will threaten our ability to feed ourselves because, after all, we are a country over reliant on a service economy. How ironic that once upon a time Barbados was envied by many as a small well governed predominantly Black country. It seems a hollow boast of late since the Mottley government won government in 2018 on a campaign theme that the Democratic Labour Party opposition was responsible for a Lost Decade. Now TwiddleD and TwiddleB can feel comfortable singing from the same hymn hymnsheet.

    So nobody has anything to say about this? Very strange. The usual chatter about white people being to blame and slavery being the cause is absent…… I wonder why?

    Because this has been brought upon Bajans by Bajans not by incidents or persons 300 plus years ago but by current nowadays people and you all don’t seem to have a clue what to do about it. WOW.

    The silence is DEAFENING.

    As I always say: It’s becoming like a broken record but maybe somebody will read this and pick up the cause and the flicker of hope will ignite.

    My dear David: If you had spent as much time as I have studying sociology [instead of something serious and money worthy like law, medicine or computer science] you would know that it is NOT trivial to note that ALL BUT ONE of the victims, and ALL of the accused are MALE.

    Wunna men can stan’ there and pretend and trivialize that we do not have a serious problem with MALES, that we are all in this together sh!te We are not all in this together. IT IS A MALE PROBLEM. But if wunna want to pretend that it int so, then we will always have a problem.

    In his final acts on the sinking ship, The Most Hated Prime Minister, in the history of this country, appointed women to two of the highest offices in the land.
    After he and his crew were thrown overboard, the elevation of women to leadership positions continued apace under the new captain.

    Sadly, even after changing all the curtains and sails, the ship continues to sink.

    Crime Council chair cites a slew of shortcomings

    The chairman of the National Advisory Council on Citizen Security tendered her resignation to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley effective yesterday, citing a number of shortcomings which negatively impacted their work.

    In her letter, addressed to the Prime Minister, Professor Velma Newton said she took up the post because “home drums beat first”, delaying other commitments in the process.

    “However, the truth is that the offer was made and accepted with too many factors not having been thought out and conveyed either to the public or to the council itself,” Newton noted.

    She said a council of 24 people was “unwieldy” and too many members were unable to attend meetings.

    “They were also unable to contribute on a large scale to the research effort needed at the beginning, to collect information on the Government departments, religious and many other organisations established to provide counselling and recreational services to youth, mentally and physically challenged persons, parents and others. Ironically, some of them are the representatives of some of these bodies on the council,” she pointed out.

    Additionally, no secretary was provided although a budget was submitted to the relevant ministry soon after the council was established.

    “This has meant that for nearly nine months, the chair, with assistance from one person who was not a member of the council, was responsible for whatever data collection occurred and for correspondence with council members.”

    Mottley announced the establishment of the council last September after a crime wave that same week left four dead and nine injured in separate incidents at Nelson Street, The City and Weston, St James. At that same media conference, she also said there would be new regulations on vehicle tint and it was against the law to wear balaclava masks without the express permission of the Commissioner of Police.

    Newton said there was a tendency for members of the public to think Government was not doing anything about the violent crime because it was continuing and not vanishing. “Careful attention must be paid to the selection and implementation process or a considerable amount of funds could go down the drain. My suspicion is also that some persons see this as a good opportunity to make money from public funds. This was my feeling when I finally saw some of the “Peace Programme” initiatives, and I still feel this way.” Newton said there were several observations – the numbers need to be increased in the law enforcement agencies as well as an overhaul of some police and court procedures and more police outposts and drones could be used in both the detection and deterrence of crime.

    Attention also needed to be placed on the schools at all levels, Newton said in the letter, to strengthen or introduce programmes that could assist in reducing crime among children who were neglected by (FP)

    their parents or guardians and were “not exposed to Christian principles through church-going and some of whom, unfortunately, are exposed to the taking of drugs, family violence, playing games for money and being groomed by members of gangs and gun runners to be their lieutenants for money which is badly needed in some households”.

    Newton said their research was also hampered by the lack of information from institutions like the Barbados Community College, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology and the National Transformation Initiative on non-traditional but potentially very useful programmes for many of the students who leave school with no certification.

    In the letter, Newton said she hoped the incoming chairman would continue on the work the council had started.

    To date, they made recommendations to the Attorney General on legislation and one of the sub-committees is also reviewing existing laws.

    Serious crime worries

    The rising wave of crime targeting businesses across Barbados has become a serious concern for the private sector, prompting urgent action and internal consultation, according to Paul Inniss, President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

    He confirmed that the BCCI’s executive body is preparing to convene a meeting within the coming week, where the issue would be discussed as a priority item.

    Speaking in light of increasing reports of robberies and burglaries affecting commercial properties, Inniss acknowledged that while levels of exposure and response vary depending on the nature of each business, the heightened risk environment has made security a growing cost centre for many enterprises.

    “This recent crime wave, particularly the incidents of burglary, has definitely caught the attention of the Chamber. The Council of the Chamber meets in a week and it is one of the items that we intend to raise and have a robust discussion around” he said.

    While Inniss stopped short of announcing any immediate Chamber-wide recommendations, he suggested that individual businesses were already being forced to re-evaluate their operational vulnerabilities and where necessary, increase their investment in security systems, surveillance and risk management protocols.

    “Depending on the organisation, companies will make the necessary risk assessments to determine what security measures they need in place,” he explained. “Naturally, if a business has to incur additional costs to enhance security, that could have implications for their overall cost of operations.”

    He noted, however, that the impact of such changes was not always linear, as improved security might also reduce losses that previously went unchecked, helping to mitigate the expense over the long term.

    “It is not necessarily a simple equation where increased spending automatically means higher costs to customers,” Inniss added. “In some cases, businesses may find that better security leads to fewer losses or disruptions, which can balance out the operational costs. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, it really depends on what you’re trying to achieve and the nature of your operation.”

    Some business owners, especially those in retail and wholesale sectors, have already indicated that recent break-ins and attempted thefts have forced them to implement costly security upgrades, including alarm systems, reinforced doors, and increased staffing during vulnerable hours.

    Asked whether this environment could potentially lead to higher prices for consumers, Inniss acknowledged the possibility, though he reiterated that outcomes would vary depending on the strategies employed by each business.

    “There is always a cost to doing business and when risks increase, the methods for managing those risks become part of the financial equation,” he said. “Some businesses may be able to absorb the costs; others might have to pass on a portion of those costs to consumers. But those are decisions each business has to make based on their structure, margins, and customer base.”

    Drawing on his background in insurance, Inniss also encouraged businesses to treat insurance as a vital tool in their overall risk management strategy, particularly in the face of increasing threats.

    “Insurance is one of the risk financing mechanisms that businesses can use to manage the financial impact of burglaries and other criminal incidents. We always encourage businesses to consider how insurance fits into their broader approach to risk, how it can help them control and transfer some of the exposure.”

Can’t even manage their own lives or the lives of their minor children and think that they can help others manage theirs. Some of them don’t even know where their children sleep at night. Don’t even know what form their child is in. Don’t even know if the child is doing well in this subject or that, or none at all. Haven’t stepped through the door of a church for decades. Abandon their elderly parents at the QEH, and think that they can help others?

    It takes brutal hard labour to raise children well. If you think that child raising is easy peasy like fooping ya wrong.

    So the government going hire 100 ” listeners” who will listen to we phones and report on conversations to a newly appointed phone crime Czar, who is yet to be appointed. Now these “trained listeners” will hear who sleeping with who and horning who in the island, along with who criticizing the BLP. They will also learn who cars got the darkest tint from the outside women talking, then a master plan like what Trump launch pun Iran, will take place. These cars will be targeted and all tint stripped off one morning at 5am by professional ” strippers” in a secret move called ” expose all.” After this we will hold 2 church services and the island will return to order. We will be able to sleep with we windows open and doors left open when we go out. The scrambler motorcycles will be ridden at 30 miles an hour on both wheels going forward. The ZRS will stop at all red lights and only stop at bus stops as well. The shooters will he lining up at the police stations to hand in their fire arms and ammunition and finally the 300 stolen cars will all be found with a list of all the importers and buyers locally for these vehicles found and made public! The island will become a utopia of peace where thousands will want to come and live in!

    If you think I talking shite you right! But answer me this though, you think them got a better answer to crime? Next month is 1 year since the BHTA and business people stated in a Barbados Today article their concerns about the crime problem. In the past 11 months what you see happen with crime? STUPES.

Of course they are, the fact that a phone call can allegedly be made to cancel the charge is not their fault. 300 stolen cars enter the island and not a word from no one. Whose fault is that? Have you heard the minister of trade for example insist that a report be prepared farless made public? The police can not succeed without the full support of their government regardless of the country.

    Stop blaming the devil for human MALE wickedness. David committed adultery and murder because he wanted to commit adultery and murder. He was NOT, repeat NOT “basically a good man.” He was a deceitful, lying, adulterous murderer, and very likely a rapist too, because I doubt that Bathsheba had the power to refuse a king who was also her husband’s boss. None of that adds up to “basically a good man”.

    How and when an adulterous murderer and likely rapist become “basically a good man”? And what then does a man have to do before you acknowledge him as very, very evil man?

    I suppose in your feeling [note I did not say thinking] that the 20+ men who have killed another 20+ men in Barbados so far this year are “basically good men”
