Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams

The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) is standing at the edge of a precipice—weighed down by financial turmoil, mismanagement, and a glaring lack of vision. Once a pillar of public broadcasting, this state-owned enterprise is now spiraling into dysfunction, with staff, contractors, and the very future of the corporation hanging in uncertainty.

A Corporation in Crisis

At the heart of CBC’s decline is deepening financial distress. While the CEO sleeps, employees lie awake worrying about when their salaries will finally arrive—concerns that stretch to cover their children’s school fees, mounting bills, looming mortgage payments, and even their ability to secure credit. The corporation is failing to meet its most basic obligations: salaries are paid late, contractors languish in limbo, and long-serving employees are met with silence instead of security. Restructuring efforts, far from instilling hope, have become little more than a smokescreen, leaving staff anxious and uncertain about their future.

But beyond the financial woes, one must ask: When last has there been a board meeting? When last has there been a management meeting? When last has there been a staff meeting? In an organization built on the very foundation of communication, there is none within its own walls. Silence has replaced leadership, and uncertainty now governs daily operations. The result is a staff left adrift—a corporation operating without strategy, where speculation fills the void left by an absent decision-maker who sits pretty in his office, cut off from employees who, despite their tireless efforts, remain demotivated. The CEO’s glaring lack of hands-on management has rendered CBC rudderless, stifling its potential with leadership that prefers isolation over accountability. Change is desperately needed, yet none is in sight.

A Failure to Evolve

As traditional broadcasting faces an existential crisis worldwide, adaptation is essential. Yet CBC is failing to evolve with the changing media landscape. Digital transformation has been sluggish, content strategies remain uninspired, and the corporation clings to outdated models instead of embracing innovation. While competitors harness new technologies and platforms to engage audiences, CBC is falling further behind—unable to capture or retain viewership in a world dominated by streaming and social media.

Compounding this failure is an ongoing struggle with talent retention. A number of well-known television personalities have walked away, in search of better prospects—a mass exodus that should have been a wake up call that spurred urgent reform. Meanwhile, the opportunity to nurture fresh talent has been largely overlooked. Rather than proactively training new, dynamic faces to take over the flagship Newsnight program and several other shows, the current anchor chairs seemed conjoined to the old guard. This lack of mentorship and succession planning denies CBC the innovative energy and contemporary perspective that are essential for evolving with the times.

Leadership Without Vision—And With Vindictiveness

In a stunning display of misplaced priorities, the CEO has managed to secure an additional $3,000 per month on top of his already generous $15,000 salary—all because he no longer has access to the designated ML company vehicle, now used to transport news teams on assignments. One must ask: if the CEO truly cared about the financial well-being of the corporation, could he not have refused this extra $3,000—perhaps remarking, “I can easily cover my petrol expenses on my already sufficient $15,000 cheque”? Yet that is highly unlikely. It raises the question of whether he himself requested this extra money, stooping so low as to find new ways to cut into the monthly earnings of those who depend on CBC.

Perhaps even more damning is the CEO’s penchant for vindictiveness. In an act that defies both logic and fairness, he dismissed two young men whose fresh energy and dedication had begun to reinvigorate CBC’s local content. Their dismissals were not the result of incompetence or failure, but appeared driven purely by personal spite. And when one considers that this very CEO once served as a senior editor at another media house—responsible for thrusting a sex scandal involving two minors on a school compound onto the front page of a daily publication—one is left to question his judgment. Imagine a man convinced that salacious content was newsworthy enough to dominate headlines; with that track record, his current mismanagement and vindictive behaviour hardly come as a surprise.

The Road to Nowhere

CBC, once an institution that informed, educated, and entertained Barbadians, is now crumbling under the weight of mismanagement and neglect. Financial instability, a draining of talent, an inability to adapt, and leadership utterly devoid of visionary management have left the corporation gasping for relevance. The staff, left in the dark, are losing faith. The audience, with better options elsewhere, is turning away. And those entrusted with steering CBC toward a brighter future are instead watching it flounder—if not actively pushing it toward the edge.

But who will stand up for change at our island’s lone TV station—our CBC—a vital institution that must endure? Will it be the government, the unions, the staff or even the viewers and listeners.Under the current leadership, one is left to ask: how long can CBC continue to fight on?

Sincerely,

An Avid Viewer & Associate of CBC’s CEO

  1. Does that stop you from believing in your faith and what it promises ?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    LOL @ William
    The REASON for Bushie’s commitment to the old Book has NOTHING to do with its age or how it is viewed by others…
    It has EVERYTHING to do with how it IMPACTS the bushman’s actual life on a daily basis…
    wuh Bushie ALSO have faith in some other old concepts – such as gravity, Love, Patience etc -and those are even OLDER than the old book…
    But mostly, if the collective Caribbbean could be 1% as successful as Bushie is, on a per capita basis, then your ‘one caribbean dream’ would be Utopia … and Bushie would be by your side.
    It is all about WHAT WORKS…. and what has failed..
    @ Pacha
    “….requires this and following generations of Afrikan peoples to do better, to seek perfection. A perfection more deeply rooted than your mindset allows.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Shiite Pacha…!
    How the Hell do you get to grasp such diamonds of wisdom – while carrying the Bajan BB Bug …AND also being anti-Bible…? LOL
    But then again the ‘other side’ know a lot themselves… 🙂

    That is actually THE PURPOSE of project ‘Life on Earth’.

    The Bible states it as ‘Love God with all your heart’…
    …but what love God what!!??
    Brass bowls can barely manage to love their OWN children, what love can we offer to the spiritual beings that actually CREATED everything…?

    What it ACTUALLY MEANS, is exactly what you said… We are challenged to seek PERFECTION with all of our best efforts.
    Put ANOTHER way – to ALWAYS do the RIGHT thing…
    Or (to use the ‘old’ Bible language,) pursue righteousness with all your heart.

    So you ARE a BOSS -even when you don’t know it… LOL ha ha ha

    BTW
    The second law, to ‘love your neighbor as you love yourself’ is merely a check balance – cause if you are UNABLE to do this – then FORGET the challenge of seeking perfection.

    And of course the THIRD law – is that you must FIRST love YOURSELF….
    else loving your neighbor ‘as you love yourself’ don’t mean squat….
    …and you done know that people who love themselves CAREFULLY look after their TEMPLES..
    They-
    …don’t eat shiite
    ..don’t drink shiite
    ..don’t smoke shiite (like Kiki)
    ..don’t look like unkempt wild animals like our schoolboys
    …don’t have pot bellies – like the blogmaster and Cuhdear.. LOL ha ha ha

    What a time…!!
    Wuh you could as well start reading the damn Bible – @Pacha…

    If Saul could change to Paul…
    ..we could change your name from ‘Pachamama’ to ‘Bbmama’….
    LOLOLOL
    murduh!!!

  2. @ John2
    So why not just appoint John2 as CEO NOW?

    That is just the stroke of a pen – it cost nothing, and Bushie can then keep his money where it is.

    But YOU know that the answer is that – unless John2 is ‘connected’ and can be relied on to toe any line handed to him by the political powers that be,IT NEVER HAPPENS.

    They will sell it to Jamaicans -who will THEN appoint John2 as CEO (Because he ACTUALLY is competent and productive) and CBC will become successful – for the new owners – while John2 and the local staff will defer to their new Massa…like the old plantation overseers and workers.
    Think….
    BNB
    Sagicor
    BL&P
    Bartel
    Massey
    etc etc etc

    What a place..
    What a curse

    The T must stand for Thor. For like Thor you are using a hammer to pound your points home.
    Great job
    Excellent

  4. BLP and DLP Governments Use Media Practitioners for Propaganda
    January 7, 2022

    The current administration has invested in the media and media personnel has invested in the Mottley administration. Some media practitioners were forced out of CBC and landed at Starcom. But some of the others are riding the fatted calf for all it is worth. (David Thompson spoke of the fatted calf being shared among the DLP members after the elections in 2008. Fourteen years later we are still there.)
    They may be professionals but how many of their statements in the print media, behind a microphone or in front of a TV camera were motivated by a political agenda or professional integrity.

    CBC (and everything else bout here) is DOOMED because our politicians INSIST on appointing their family, friends, political lackies and minions to MANAGE CRITICAL NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE…. and IGNORE REAL TALENT.

    Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

    If u appoint John2 in any form or fashion is to still fulfill the above / doom it faster as j2 maybe a lackie or minion

    Sell it to bushie and johnA let is see u got the real independent power/ wisdom

    Maybe weee should find some mercy for William Skinner, as you would any lost sheep!

    Not only him. For both George Lamming and Eric Williams, who he quotes and seems to have too deep a devotion for, were both products from the so-called Enlightenment, of 500 years ago.

    The central plank of this enlightenment was the removal of the spiritual from everything. For spirit is as essential to the Afrikan as water is to a fish. Spirit, not religion. They knew not of that.

    It was Descartes who was the first philosopher to offer this to mislead Europeans and separate the sciences from their ancient Afrikan origins.

    Meaning, that if Eric Williams, George Lamming and William Skinner were well grounded in their Ancient Afrikan-ness they would be less inclined to waste time with projects uninformed by spirit.

    George Lamming for one, was a brillant revolutionary communist. While Eric Williams was predominately a great historian/economist within the Keynesian tradition. Both Eurocentric renderings.

    Indeed, ancient Afrikans saw no differences between the sciences and the spiritual. To them everything was connected to every other thing.

    No wonder our people throughout the world are the poorest largely because we’re, like William Skinner and great men like George Lamming and Eric Williams and many others, follow the emptiness of Whiteness. Whether they accept this truism or not.

    If they knew themselves first, we might have had very different outcomes today.

    You have failed miserably to effectively discuss any of my positions in relation to the Caribbean and they are all presented with clarity of thought, purpose and consistently. But rest assured that whenever you attempt to denigrate the Caribbean , we will respond accordingly.

    @Bush Tea asked
    “Why does CBC have to allow technological change to be a challenge to its sustainability … RATHER THAN be the means of its success????”

    I wish I knew how to convince Bajan businesses to spend their marketing budget with local enterprises rather than Google & Meta & Tiktok, but I don’t. The search engine and social media giants constitute a global monopoly which has robbed technological change of 99.99% of its liberatory potential.

    I spent a year back in 1999 designing and building barbadian.com for the Nation Group in order to capture local search queries and leverage their economic value, but they shut it down soon after because the global monopolies do not play fair.

    The internet has been taken over by a phenomenon called “enshitification” where the monopolies actively kill anything which threatens their monopoly.

    Easily solved.
    But nearly impossible now.

    Well at 08:06 you raised a question about the Caribbean’s place in the world; whether this writer was prepared to question what Williams and others have said previously about the Caribbean’s unique history. Then you went on to talk trite about ‘lap dog’ and the like; presented yourself as a bulwark against my critiques of you most beloved area of the world; postured credit for this writer’s critical analysis of global events; called our analysis of the ‘dismissive” Inter alia!

    At 08:46 you, verbatim seemed to have quoted Lamming.
    At 10:46 you replied to Bushie
    At 5:50 then you complained how ‘miserable’ the effectiveness of this writer’s responses were while suggesting that your ideas were well present with “clarity of though, purpose and ‘consistently’ and threatened to respond anytime this writer has anything to say about the Caribbean that you dislike.

    =============

    Be Jesus Christ as a writer, a reader, there is the license to paraphrase the about. For in addition to ignoring previous responses by this writer, in a uniquely held right available only to you, you and you alone, it’s either ‘i anit say so’ or that somebody failed to answer some question about accepted dogma.

    Readers could find this writer’s responses above.

    There are no responses more fundamental that we can offer. For there are few clear questions stated and what might so qualify were well disposed of by Pachamama.

    Could it be that you lack the ability to engage any foreign ideas, even the deepest thoughts of the deepest thinkers, whose ideas maybe off your list?

    At the root of your decades old positions is the almost religious belief that orthodoxy about the Caribbean as imbibed by you and developed by those who you most respect should, without critical though, be articles of faith for anyone who pretends to be Caribbean.

    Skinner this writer will never accept this, never! Further, Pacha takes exception that you seem to pretend that you can determine how the Caribbean world is seen, as armed by statement likely issued decades ago by people who are to you intellectual gods never to be disobeyed. Meaning, that Pacha and Pacha alone with determine cosmogeny. Not you, not Williams, not Lamming, or any rasssoul body else! Regardless to how enamored you maybe by them. In other word, fuck off!

    Of course, implicit with your arguments is that Pacha seems to have more affection for other regions than your most beloved Caribbean. Have you ever supposed that because this writer is a publicly declared Afrikan, first, seeking the rise of Afrikan peoples everywhere that an interest in global affairs is so connected.

    Pacha has long declared to being an Afrikan first and foremost, not a Caribbean like you. And you seem to have found this determination anathema to accepted doctrine.

    Other snead remarks relate to Pacha’s anti-American, anti-Western, anti-imperial, anti-Eurocentric, anti-colonial, anti-capitalist discourses. There was a time when all of these positions would have found in you a fellow traveler. However, for decade now you seemed to have lacked the intestinal fortitude to say one fucking word against America on any of the issues above.

    Your occupation seems to reside within a dated set of ideas which died back in the 1970’s, currently have no critical mass amongst Caribbeans, in a flailing attempt to suggest resonance, give meanings to the post-independence failures.

    In any case, there are no serious questions which either need to be asked or answered about the state of the Caribbean. A blind man could see for himself. Was it not you, yourself, who suggested a few days ago that crime is such that there was no hope, even as Pacha was trying to find a modicum?

    Yours are the ways of the amateur. Have the last words. Dealing with trite from amateurs is not worthy of our time.

    Quite frankly many of the positions you take on globalization were agreed to by us many moons ago. We have simply tried to remind you that we need to be wary of others whose agendas are essentially no different from those who enslaved us before.
    That is why we expend our energies on the New Caribbean Nation project.
    Why should we come here to repeat what you say when you know full well that we have similar positions ?
    You also know that we, many moons ago determined that we are Africans first, long before it was fashionable. How can any progressive thinker imagine a free and powerful Caribbean without Africa.
    It’s amazing that you cannot discern such clear thinking
    BTW, anytime, are accused or deemed to be deifying : Marley, Sparrow, Sobers, Williams, Lamming , Best , Cumberbatch and others we are proud
    Pick sense from that .

  14. CBC can not be saved as it stands using 40 year old technology. It also has nothing to offer us in terms of today’s technology. It is basically the governments mouth piece and really needs selling or shutting down. Em is that simple. They are much like FLOW and their overseas calls revenue and landline services.

    The reality is technology likes WhatsApp and the Internet have cut out the need for the middle man service provider. I also predict maybe not in my lifetime, that all these services will be replaced by satellite and we will have no cables coming to our homes at all other that power. As it stands this type of product is already out there and can be bought and used here in Bim.
