The following story is of interest to Barbadians. It seems strangely ironic a ‘nasty’ story about a Barbados born priest is in the news at the peak of a Christian holiday. What is also interesting is that before David Tudor was kicked out of the Anglican Church for life in the UK, he was on suspension for 5 years and during that time Nation News has reported he was invited to participate in a local ceremony.

Tudor was part of Springer Memorial School’s 60th anniversary gala, held in October at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill under the big tent, he being the son of its first principal the late Pamela Tudor, and the late Canon Harold Tudor – Source: Nation News

What the hell!

It is no secret the Church prefers to hide its dirty laundry in private. It is one of the great hypocrisies of the times given its primary mandate to save souls. It is possible David Tudor will be seen in a pulpit near you soon to explain his indiscretions. Wasn’t his father Harold Tudor also in the gossip news because of his lifestyle preference?

Bishop reacts as vicar banned over grooming claims

The Bishop of Chelmsford has said lessons “must be learned” after a vicar was struck off over sexual abuse allegations.

David Tudor, who was team rector for the Parish of Canvey in Essex, had been suspended for the last five years but was banned for life by the Church of England at a tribunal hearing this week.

The panel heard he formed sexual relationships with two girls – including one under the age of 16 – between 1982 and 1989.

The Right Reverend Dr Guli Francis-Deqhani welcomed the decision to “prohibit him from ministry for life”.

“I am deeply sorry for the profound hurt and harm David Tudor’s behaviour has caused,” said Dr Francis-Deqhani.

“There will be important lessons that must be learned about how this matter has been handled over many years and I welcome the fact that there will now be a national independent safeguarding practice review.”

Diaries destroyed

The tribunal determined that Mr Tudor’s behaviour – which occurred when he was a priest in the Diocese of Southwark – was “an abuse of trust” which amounted to “grooming”.

Mr Tudor told the two-day tribunal that he had no recollection of the incidents with the two girls – who were identified as X and Y – but he accepted that sexual acts took place between himself and Y, and did not challenge X’s account of what happened.

The tribunal heard how the former vicar tried to keep the relationship with X – which started when she was 15 years old – a secret, demanding she destroyed her diaries.

He offered a full apology to both X and Y.

Surrey Police said it investigated a report in 2019 of “non-recent indecent assault offences” against a man in his 60s from Canvey Island – which were alleged to have taken place in Reigate – but the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was insufficient evidence to take the matter to court.

“As with all closed cases, if any new or compelling evidence is reported to us, we will look at the possibility of reopening the investigation,” a spokesperson for the force added.

Mr Tudor was also accused but acquitted of indecent assault against a 16-year-old girl – identified as Z – in January 1988, the tribunal heard.

He was sentenced to six months in prison in 1988 for indecent assault in relation to three other complainants, but this conviction was later quashed by the Court of Appeal.

After serving a five-year suspension, he returned to ministry in the 1990s and was appointed team vicar of Canvey Island in 1997 and team rector in 2000.

Mr Tudor was later suspended in 2005 by the Diocese of Chelmsford after a complaint was made about his conduct relating to a time prior to his ordination in the 1970s, which did not involve either X or Y.

The tribunal heard there were no criminal proceedings and he was permitted to return to his position at Canvey Island.

The Rt Reverend Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, said that Mr Tudor’s behaviour was “a serious and damaging breach of his pastoral and professional obligations as a priest”.

Mr Tudor’s victims were being offered full support, Reverend Chessun added, saying he was “deeply grateful” for their courage in sharing their experiences and engaging “with this long and difficult process”.

  1. As Artax would say, final final comment. Sticks and stones may break the blogmaster’s bones but words will never hurt. You may have the final word Donna.

  2. @TLSN

The comment is a simple one to comprehend.

  3. @John “What about you Muhdear?Did you have your talk yet with your priest?”

    Nope.

I am old enough that I taught the priest in Sunday school. Lol!

I don’t care about high church or low church. Sometimes I go where my mother was baptized more than 100 years ago; and sometimes I go to a place a nice short walk from home.

As a ZR woman nobody considers me to be elite, and I don’t consider myself so either.

I am me. And I don’t report to anybody.

David Tudor also conducted interment of ashes in apparent breach of official suspension

The priest at the centre of an Archbishop of York child abuse scandal officiated at a funeral last month, despite being banned from ministry. In an apparent breach of his official prohibition, the defrocked David Tudor also conducted an interment of ashes at a consecrated churchyard only a fortnight ago, on Dec 7.

I suspect he will become a teacher in Barbados or be responsible for distributing questionnaires to school children.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Who?

David Tudor is my age, past retirement.

When I was at school some teachers like Rock Jaw, De Birdie and Chumley were probably well past retirement and were given a gig.

When I taught at UWI almost 20 years ago, I met Chilly Willy there. He looked the exact same as I remembered him at HC 35 years previously.

    He was teaching Greek!!

You are not going to find anyone able to teach that subject among young people.

However, I doubt the powers that be will allow in older folks who can debate, argue and beat them by pure logic unless people in their subject are difficult to find.

Most older folks will easily beat most younger folks in a debate/argument.

  7. Dear Darling Donna:
Rather than ruffling your undies, who was Artax?
The one from the North ask questions recently. You seemed to know the timeframe of events. Connect the dots? Your limey buddy talking loud saying nothing would like to know.

  8. Frank,

My undies are just fine, sweetie. And yes, I was about to comb the old obits to see if anybody else fits the description besides the one who first came to mind.

I remember Artax picking up his ball and going home just because Bush Tea took him up on his amateurish attempt to use Bible verses, and I had to agree that he hadn’t a clue. It was the second time in a row that I had disagreed with him.

“Perhaps it is time for me to exit BU,” he concluded, showing even greater hypersensitivity than he often did in his back and forth with some critics, (Not me. There was mutual respect between us to the extent that he commented on it just a few months prior.)

My comment at the time was an incredulous, “Seriously, bro???? And, “What’s up with you?”

I remember that he said his wife died, maybe last year. I remember quite a lot more of his details but they don’t square with the person who came to my mind.

I was hoping he would get over his huff and return to HIS ROLE on BU.

I was under the impression that we all had one, according to our strengths. I made it clear that the mind is where I believe our problems to be. I like studying human beings, and I am very good at sussing out where they are coming from. My workmates used to tell me that I could find an excuse for every problem person’s attitude and behaviour. I always replied that I was not offering an excuse, but rather, a reason.

Once you understand the reason, you can begin to address the problem.

This blog was about how matters of sexual abuse, particularly sexual abuse of minors is handled by the Church.

Facts and figures detailing its prevalence would be helpful, of course. An examination of the attitudes which allow it to happen, and to go unremarked, and largely, unpunished, would also be helpful, one would think. And here we had two BU contributors whose take was surprising, to say the least! That, in my humble opinion, makes an examination of the prevailing attitudes even more pertinent.

Then out comes David, admonishing me to become Artax, add value to his blog and stop following John Knox down EVERY rabbit hole.

A review of my comments for the last few years would reveal that I now ignore most of John’s most ludicrous offerings, do a brief response or two to his less ludicrous offerings and only respond at length to his less obvious ludicrousness.

Where was the rabbit hole here? An ex of mine told me a few years back that once, when he called out the attitude of some fellow travellers to passing teenage school girls in uniform, he was casually informed that,

“After twelve is lunch.” Translation – thirteen and up is fair game.

    Where is the rabbit hole?

  9. I will take that final word, David.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but your telling me to be Artax hit a bloody nerve!

I am the last person to even want to be somebody else. I have long analysed myself and I am quite happy with the person that I am. Donna’s “brand” has ALWAYS been to be unapologetically Donna, and to hell with anyone who wants her to be somebody else.

There has always been method to my “madness”.

You may mourn Artax’s loss. You are not alone in that. But don’t exhort me to become his replacement. That is not me.

  10. Oh hell! I just saw David’s other accusation Wuh the last time I engaged John on Trump was on the blog about Kamala Harris and TRUMP!

    Hahahahahaha!

  11. Meanwhile, over in Israel, Mossad is explaining how it got a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

  12. @Donna December 23, 2024 at 8:30 am “And here we had two BU contributors whose take was surprising, to say the least!”

I was distressed by the ramblings of Bush Tea and John, but not at all surprised. Misogynists don’t love and respect women, nor do they love and respect women’s children.

  13. As for those idiots who talk nonsense about “after 12 is lunch” and who then ACT on it; if I had my way I would remove their testes.

Walking ’bout talking about “breeding” females as though female humans are livestock, and then not providing emotional, physical, spiritual, moral nor financial support to those HUMAN BEINGS [made in God’s image] they helped to bring into the world.

I have no use for such low lifes.

  14. There are even worse expression than “after 12 is lunch”

Sad to say, one of my good friends was a sexual predator. His method was ‘statuary rape’ of some young girl who could not did not really know what she was consenting to.

When told that these girls were too young and too small for his advances his reply “Was little pilchers (pilchards) have big eyeholes”. I know he learnt that from someone.

I suspect that there are many more predatory phrases that are alive and doing well in Barbados.

  15. Is it aging…
Lately, I notice that they and there are kicking my butt. I still have their under control, but the merging of they and there surprises me.

I think in the previous post.. the word “There” should have been “They”.

It is amazing how as you get older, you notice every mistake and start to worry. Typos cannot be just ignored.

  16. Cuhdear,

Yes, we know that blaming the woman is their thing, but this was a child.

As for the After Twelve Crew – bedecked in collar and tie, no less. Not the boys on the block. Not the ZR men. Collar and tied and in hot pursuit of any girl over twelve.

A few years ago, an old ass church member at the church I attended admitted to asking a ten year old girl for a kiss. He was barred from making costumes for our regular Easter production. But there seems to have been no further action taken.

I missed the young lady and her parents from helping with the production or even attending worship. When next I saw her, I asked what was going on. She told me the story and how she was dissatified with the response from the priest. Her daughter also felt as though she had been abandoned.

I have always been one to act to solve problems, especially those involving children. So I relayed that information to the priest. His response was that since he was pastor to both victim and perpetrator, he had to consider the needs of both for pastoral care.

Indeed, I replied. But one was guilty and the other was innocent. The guilty one needed to learn to accept the consequences of his actions.
The damage to the innocent child should have been the priority.

Simple solution that came mind right there on the spot. There were two services every Sunday. The young girl should be given her choice, and the old ass man should take the other. If attending the earlier service, he should be sure to leave the premises promptly so that the young girl would not be disturbed by his presence.

One condition for his continued membership should be that he seek professional counselling for his sickness.

I am sure that this would have satisfied the mother and her daughter and kept them within the fold. As it was, they never returned.

And the priest? A few years later, he got a rather big promotion.

  17. The priest sounds just like Trump when Trump said “there are very fine people on both sides”

But honestly I expect better of a priest.

And I expect much better of my church.

  18. The Europeans are beginning to see the light, and to deal rightly with those who prey on children.

“A number of EU Member States make use of chemical castration. In most countries chemical castration cannot be imposed as a compulsory penalty but can be PRESCRIBED BY CRIMINAL COURTS as one of the conditions for sentence reduction or release. In Poland, however, it has been possible since 2009 to SENTENCE SEXUAL OFFENDERS TO COMPULSORY CHEMICAL CASTRATION.”

  19. “Legislation allowing chemical castration exists in France, the United Kingdom, Poland, Russia, North Macedonia, Belgium and Turkey. The drug cyproterone acetate has been commonly used for chemical castration throughout Europe. It resembles the drug MPA used in America.”

So if the predators can’t help themselves maybe Cyproterone Acetate can help them.

  20. If the allegations of grooming and sexual assault of children are true,

    David Tudor needed professional counselling.

  21. The fact that the Church did a cover up job is proof of their liability for any wrongdoings by their representatives.

The same goes for institutions like the Police service who are missing in action when it comes to admitting blame.

  22. Cuhdear,

I have discovered that priests do very little to solve any problem within their congregation. Everything is allowed to fester and eventually rot.

  23. TheOG,

It is part aging and part seeing so many others getting it wrong. It is happening to me also.

Case in point – “Me and a few others” Damn! I knew it sounded funny but I only just picked up on what was wrong.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Amazing how the uninformed refuse to read what is placed before them and run off with all sorts of accusations, all of which are complete rubbish.

Obviously, Muhdear must have missed out on something in her youth and is one bitter, miserable, old woman.

Surely Donna must know what quashed by the Court of Appeal means?

For the benefit of Muhdear it is kind of like squashed.

It has no relationship however to the squash you grow in your garden.

Let me repeat what I have placed already in the comments and which form the basis of the blog.

Surrey Police said it investigated a report in 2019 of “non-recent indecent assault offences” against a man in his 60s from Canvey Island – which were alleged to have taken place in Reigate – but the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was insufficient evidence to take the matter to court.

He was sentenced to six months in prison in 1988 for indecent assault in relation to three other complainants, but this conviction was later quashed by the Court of Appeal.

So, no indecent assault, no rape, best is an admission from David Tudor that he had a sexual relationship with one.

There is nothing to warrant the type of invective levelled against David Tudor. I hope he chooses to sue for defamation ….. like Trump!!

If he waits a little bit, he might get the Cyber Crime Bill to use, but he should stick with the Defamation because the Cyber Crime Bill can be challenged as being the result of an unconstitutional parliament.

The key words are, insufficient evidence, acquitted and sentence quashed.

What is so difficult to understand about these terms?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Whatever allegations have been leveled against him he has beaten!!

The one black mark against him is his admission to a sexual relationship with a 16 year old girl …… For heaven’s sakes, the age of consent is 16.

“The tribunal heard how the former vicar tried to keep the relationship with X – which started when she was 15 years old – a secret, demanding she destroyed her diaries.”

    Clear as mud.

Obviously, he can’t have had sexual intercourse with the girl under 15 or his ass would be grass, priest or no priest.

There simply is not enough to warrant the Muhdear’s intervention.

  26. Wasn’t his father Harold Tudor also in the gossip news because of his lifestyle preference?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It was alleged of Cannon Tudor (HC Master’s Common Room in the Retreat) that long before he had been given the title Canon by the church, the ladies of Barbados knew him as “the Cannon”.

I have heard some recent embellishments but probably all are untrue, and if not, unproveable.

Most men in Barbados shared the Cannon’s alleged preference, that’s why 70% of births in Barbados in the 70’s were illegitimate, at least until the law changed to catch up with reality.

  27. Surely YOU know what “banned for life” means! Insufficient evidence in a court of law does not equate to innocence. The burden of proof and reasonable doubt and all that prevails in a criminal court. But the standard in a civil court is a preponderance of evidence, meaning more likely true than not. Probably the position taken by the Church also.

    Sooooooo…

  28. On the plus side, his dirty deeds may result in the fall of the Church

Perhaps John can speak to his friend for a scoop of the nitty gritty and/or direct him to comment on this Bu thread dedicated to him

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/22/archbishop-of-york-stephen-cottrell-david-tudor-case

  29. Banned for life over events that took place between 1982 and 1989 is a joke.

Especially as David Tudor is over the age of retirement!!

In the C of E he could go on till 70.

    This is pure comedy.

For heavens sakes, this is the best you can do.

If you were a lawyer, I would never hire you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Sue indeed! Cybercrime bill my ass! Why isn’t he suing the church that banned him?

A preponderance of the evidence, that’s why!

John Knox always underestimates the intelligence of others. He and his double exclamation points are hilarious.

But then Trump got $16 million and his reputation is supposed to be no good!!

  36. @John December 23, 2024 at 7:08 pm “Most men in Barbados shared the Cannon’s alleged preference, that’s why 70% of births in Barbados in the 70’s were illegitimate, at least until the law changed to catch up with reality.”

A nonsensical and illegitimate interpretation of the alleged 70% birth rate outside of marriage. Most living organisms seek to engage in reproductive activities. This is true of plants, the birds and bees and of human beings. So seeking to and actually engaging is sex is normal and healthy. In human societies the law mandates that the parties are of age, and that there is mutual consent, and this is because raising the babies which are often produced takes significantly more than a decade, so the parents need to stick around long term. It is untrue to imply that most Bajans preferred to be promiscuous and to avoid marriage. There were plenty of men in my village who married one woman early in life and remained married until death. My own father, born in 1911, and whose formal education ended at 11 said that from early he wanted all of his children in one place. There are plenty of men then and now who want to have their children in one household with them, who want to protect and provide for their children. Who when they lay their heads on their pillows at night know that their children are at home with them. To imply that most Bajan men then and now are “village rams” and that necessarily therefore most Bajan women are promiscuous is a lie. John knows as well as I do that most people like to have a “nice” wedding, and that “nice” weddings cost money, and that most black people in Barbados have historically been economically exploited by people who look just like John, and that sometimes if a couple wanted to marry they didn’t even have the money for a nice outfit for the bride and groom, and money for food, cake, coconut water and a few rums for the guests. So people weren’t marriage shy, nor family shy, people were desperately poor. I know of one man who married late, at about age 40, because he couldn’t afford a pair of dress shoes. He cut cane BAREFOOT in the plantations for very small wages. When he did marry, he remained married until he was 90 and had no children outside of his marriage.

I will not sit here and have John denigrate my decent, working class Bajan people.

  42. In fact, he is a lot blacker than I am.

It is just a matter of happenstance that his father married an English woman and he ended with the good hair and the fine features.

  45. Thanks for asking.

Not complaining. Managing my health issues with diet, medication and doctors I trust.

Wish I could visit Barbados but not logical at this time.

  46. I suspect the reason why David Tudor is causing some to get their knickers in a twist is because he is too clear.

If he was darker with features and hair to suit, no one would be saying anything.

This is really all about reverse racism.

TLSN sees him as a white man when in reality he is not.

No doubt Muhdear and Donna are also so afflicted by the light colour of his skin, his good hair and fine features and can’t process the facts.

It took TLSN to ask the obvious question about skin colour for the true reason to emerge.

    I got it!!

  49. David Tudor’s father the Anglican Canon, used to come to my school to invigilate General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations. Canon Tudor was not white. He was a light skinned person of mixed African and European descent. His wife, David’s mother was white English. I don’t know whether David identifies as white or black, or something else, since I’ve never seen his census form.

  50. You know that Harold St. Clair Tudor, David’s father was a cousin of “Joe” Tudor?

His father and “Joe” Tudor’s father, also Joseph Onesimus, were brothers.

I believe the family was involved in undertaking, based in My Lord’s Hill.
