The following story is of interest to Barbadians. It seems strangely ironic a ‘nasty’ story about a Barbados born priest is in the news at the peak of a Christian holiday. What is also interesting is that before David Tudor was kicked out of the Anglican Church for life in the UK, he was on suspension for 5 years and during that time Nation News has reported he was invited to participate in a local ceremony.

Tudor was part of Springer Memorial School’s 60th anniversary gala, held in October at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill under the big tent, he being the son of its first principal the late Pamela Tudor, and the late Canon Harold Tudor – Source: Nation News

What the hell!

It is no secret the Church prefers to hide its dirty laundry in private. It is one of the great hypocrisies of the times given its primary mandate to save souls. It is possible David Tudor will be seen in a pulpit near you soon to explain his indiscretions. Wasn’t his father Harold Tudor also in the gossip news because of his lifestyle preference?

Bishop reacts as vicar banned over grooming claims

The Bishop of Chelmsford has said lessons “must be learned” after a vicar was struck off over sexual abuse allegations.

David Tudor, who was team rector for the Parish of Canvey in Essex, had been suspended for the last five years but was banned for life by the Church of England at a tribunal hearing this week.

The panel heard he formed sexual relationships with two girls – including one under the age of 16 – between 1982 and 1989.

The Right Reverend Dr Guli Francis-Deqhani welcomed the decision to “prohibit him from ministry for life”.

“I am deeply sorry for the profound hurt and harm David Tudor’s behaviour has caused,” said Dr Francis-Deqhani.

“There will be important lessons that must be learned about how this matter has been handled over many years and I welcome the fact that there will now be a national independent safeguarding practice review.”

Diaries destroyed

The tribunal determined that Mr Tudor’s behaviour – which occurred when he was a priest in the Diocese of Southwark – was “an abuse of trust” which amounted to “grooming”.

Mr Tudor told the two-day tribunal that he had no recollection of the incidents with the two girls – who were identified as X and Y – but he accepted that sexual acts took place between himself and Y, and did not challenge X’s account of what happened.

The tribunal heard how the former vicar tried to keep the relationship with X – which started when she was 15 years old – a secret, demanding she destroyed her diaries.

He offered a full apology to both X and Y.

Surrey Police said it investigated a report in 2019 of “non-recent indecent assault offences” against a man in his 60s from Canvey Island – which were alleged to have taken place in Reigate – but the Crown Prosecution Service determined there was insufficient evidence to take the matter to court.

“As with all closed cases, if any new or compelling evidence is reported to us, we will look at the possibility of reopening the investigation,” a spokesperson for the force added.

Mr Tudor was also accused but acquitted of indecent assault against a 16-year-old girl – identified as Z – in January 1988, the tribunal heard.

He was sentenced to six months in prison in 1988 for indecent assault in relation to three other complainants, but this conviction was later quashed by the Court of Appeal.

After serving a five-year suspension, he returned to ministry in the 1990s and was appointed team vicar of Canvey Island in 1997 and team rector in 2000.

Mr Tudor was later suspended in 2005 by the Diocese of Chelmsford after a complaint was made about his conduct relating to a time prior to his ordination in the 1970s, which did not involve either X or Y.

The tribunal heard there were no criminal proceedings and he was permitted to return to his position at Canvey Island.

The Rt Reverend Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark, said that Mr Tudor’s behaviour was “a serious and damaging breach of his pastoral and professional obligations as a priest”.

Mr Tudor’s victims were being offered full support, Reverend Chessun added, saying he was “deeply grateful” for their courage in sharing their experiences and engaging “with this long and difficult process”.

  1. Jippy Doyle was wrong to have sex with a 13 year old. David Tudor is wrong, and has been found to be wrong by both the state and the church.

Jippy Doyle is dead, dead, dead. Hallelujah.

May David Tudor soon join him.

  2. @John at 5:28 AM “Here is one such Barbadian 13 year old female a priest was convicted of raping when she was only 13. Her mother and herself were members of the same church at which the priest officiated. The question has to be asked, how does a 13 year old girl get to be alone with a man, priest or not who is not a family member? Was there maternal consent? Where was the father?”

For John to imply that the CHILD’s mother and or father may have consented or been negligent is nefarious.

Many of us, perhaps most of us send our 13 year old GIRLS and BOYS to school, and to church and Sunday school. We permit them to visit grandparents etc. We expect the MEN and WOMEN at these places to behave like responsible adults; to act in loco parentis. We do not expect them to sexually assault our children. Everyone who is a parent or who has ever been a parent knows that it is impossible to 13 year olds everywhere.

We do not expect the school or the church, or the grandparents, or old trusted friends to agree to provide moral supervision to our children, and then to sexually assault vulnerable CHILDREN.

I for one am glad enough that the church finally kicked David Tudor’s ass out.

Decent men and women must condemn wicked men who assault girls, boys, disabled people, and non-consenting adults.

We need to stop being mealy mouthed when the assailant is our relative, friend, school mate, church member etc.

    Wrong is ALWAYS wrong.

  3. CORRECTION: Everyone who is a parent or who has ever been a parent knows that it is impossible to ACCOMPANY 13 year olds everywhere.

  4. There is a saying to which the blogmaster subscribes- too much learning is a dangerous thing.

  5. @David December 21, 2024 at 8:23 am “There is a saying to which the blogmaster subscribes- too much learning is a dangerous thing.”

Actually David the saying is “a little learning is a dangerous thing”

Some people may have learned a whole lot about math, physics etc., but far too little about right and wrong.

  6. I see the twisting and spinning. The truth is, I thought that ‘those in charge’ having sex with underage girls/minors ‘in their care’ would be seen as a wrong.

Excuses and explanations cannot make what is a wrong deed a correct act.

  7. Underage sex is wrong for anyone and worse for trusted and respected priests.
Perhaps the apologists here for this man’s slip in judgement with a young girl below the age of consent have also engaged in the same practice (which is statutory rape)

  8. Jippy Doyle and David Tudor were dealt with by a human organization which happens to be called the church.

Meanwhile, they may be members in good standing in the real Church and many here who seek to pass judgment may not yet have even found the door.

  9. @555dubstreet December 21, 2024 at 11:27 am “…slip in judgement…”

Except that it is NOT a “slip in judgement” when multiple offenses occur over multiple years and involving multiple victims.

Decent men everywhere must condemn this bad behavior whenever and wherever it occurs.

Stop making excuses for your bad behaved buddies.

  10. I am very much more concerned with what happens here in Barbados. That is why I like to dwell on the attitudes that allow these dastardly deeds to go unpunished. Imagine finding these attitudes right here among the supposedly decent, upright, and fit for mentorship men of BU, these same men who opined that I, being a woman, could not teach a boy to be a man. One went so far as to suggest that I seek out Grenville Phillips to mentor my son. The same one made fun of the fact that my son was responsibly controlling his sexual desire until a more appropriate time, and had an understanding (much like the betrothals of old) with a like-minded young woman for such a time. The implication was made that he must be homosexual. Or that he was not attractive to women. Here I was expecting congratulations on raising me a fine young man (lol) and instead I received mostly ridicule! It’s almost as though these men did not really want the kind of men who could make this a better society as they claimed! It’s as though they have more admiration for the village rams who use women solely for sexual gratification, leaving troubled, unwanted children in their wake!
And even among those who did not express that admiration, there was one who called me a liar, because a “foul-mouthed” female such as I could not have so successfully parented. That person has never policed the speech of the “foul-mouthed” males among us.

But the fact remains that my fifteen year old son, on being approached by a twelve year old girl who wished him to be her boyfriend, gently but firmly put her in her place far far away.

And here we have a BU sage dismissing the statutory rape of a fifteen year old girl by a twenty-four year old man in a trusted pastoral position of influence and authority. We also have another muddying the waters, pointing out that some women do throw themselves at priests. As if we didn’t know. (I, however, did not throw myself at the priest who ran his hand up my leg. Next, somebody will be asking what I was wearing at the time.)

In any event, what do the feminine wiles of WOMEN have to do with the statutory rape of a fifteen year old girl by a twenty-four year old male priest?

Wuh jack, even the aforementioned son of a foul- mouthed single mother just this minute posed that question. (HAHAHAHAHA!)

So, I say all that to say this – the problems we face in our country have their origins in the morasses of our minds. They cannot be solved without an examination of what prejudices and biases are hidden in the recesses in some cases, and up front and proudly so in others.

Still, we do have Theo and his best friend 000, who are unequivocal in their condemnation.

My son has declared this week – Positivity Week, soooo…

    Hooray for Theo and 000!

I am not seeking to pass judgement.

    I AM passing judgement.

And if those guys are in your idea of some real church somewhere I am happy not to be in that real church, and I am certainly not hanging around at any door waiting to be let in.

  12. Go and talk to your priest!!!

  13. Anybody who believes that a woman cannot inspire/ teach a male child how to be a respectful man with good values is terribly ignorant of our culture and society. When everybody was boarding BOAC heading to Englan’ it was the mothers and grandmothers left to raise the boy children. Indeed many males have always referenced their primary school female teachers as the great influencers in their lives. We have known and met many men , who worship their grandmothers.

  14. @William

The job of how to parent effectively is complex. It is not a binary matter that is for sure. Too many of us like to simplify complex issues .

  15. David sometimes we accept a lot of positions that have little relevance to our culture and our historical journey. We are yet to come into any real and profound study of parenting in our country. We are sending and paying for university trained social scientists , whose works often fall short of any guidance of how our communities should be developed.
For example why can’t we accept that marriage is not often seen as the be all of raising a good family ? Why do some women accept their spouses or partners having “ outside “ relationships? How come that children from different mothers and fathers develop great bonds as brothers and sisters?
We need to have social scientists who can address such cultural norms when it comes to parenting and relationships. What we often get is a hodgepodge of worn intellectual , repetitive bull shit that we take as gospel.
If we don’t understand the culture both negative and positive how are we going to solve our problems.

  16. @Willaim

You are reaching deep to what is required to fashion individual identities to ensure that as a nation (collective) we build a country undergirded by a moral frame; of a value set that can propel us to where we have to go to sustain a wholesome life. At the moment we are happy to float in the current of popular culture, it doesn’t matter if it belongs to others.

  17. Go and get an exorcism from yours! Hahaha!

  18. 000 is a slur that should not be repeated by online friends

  19. @ David
Exactly. We don’t want to dig deep because we don’t want to be uncomfortable. What are we really teaching or guiding our children toward. Why are we constantly measuring progress by degrees of inferiority ? We no longer judge performance by what is the best but what is the better of the poorest. A bundle of almost psycho intellectualism more suited for 18th century intellectual discourse than anything that is currently our reality . For all the pretty talk , we still find comfort in the dismal, cold, dark walls of a perverse Eurocentric thinking that will most certainly result in many of us dwelling in the corridors of perpetual eccentricity.

  20. @William Skinner December 21, 2024 at 3:29 pm “Why do some women accept their spouses or partners having “outside “ relationships?”

    But do they accept though?

Or is it mere tolerance until they can do better/find a way out?

    And

“Are there any Bajan men who accept their spouses or partners having “outside “ relationships?”

    And if not why not?

I agree with you though that there is a need for difficult conversations.

  21. David December 21, 2024 at 3:07 pm “To parent effectively is complex. It is not a binary matter that is for sure. Too many of us like to simplify complex issues.”

    But is it though?

What if it is simple? Teach the child right from wrong. Love the child. Feed the child. Provide good food, simple clothing and adequate shelter. Send the child to school. Check that the homework is being done. Teach the child basic self care and housekeeping because one day the child will be a man or woman living away from you, and will have to care for self and likely for others. Provide some recreation which does not have to be expensive. I can hear some little boys outside right now happily kicking around a football which they will do until sunset.

What if we are making simple innate issues unnecessarily complex? What if we are making people feel that parenting is so complex that young people are shying away from this essential rite of passage?

  22. But this blog is not about parenting.

This blog is not about blaming women/mothers, or men/fathers.

This blog is about a grown man, an unruly priest who WOULD not keep his hands to himself.

  23. Donna December 21, 2024 at 4:09 pm “Go and get an exorcism from yours! Hahaha!”

    Donna, ya killin’ me den!

  24. Don’t have one and don’t go to church, with a common c.

  25. …. and perhaps that’s why I can’t understand the hatred and bile directed against a fellow human being who happens to be a priest by those who actually do go to church, with a common c and do have a priest.

perhaps I should have put ‘slip in judgement’ in quotes or double quotes to emphasise that I was not condoning the feeble excuses for the guilty perp

Perhaps the apologists here for this man’s slip in judgement with a young girl below the age of consent have also engaged in the same practice (which is statutory rape)

…. standard punishment in the human institutions of the Royal Navy, British Army and general society under the law for centuries for infractions of discipline,

It worked and could work again.

Probably not applicable in a church setting if you are suggesting that.

David Tudor was a spindly boy at school, and it would probably kill him which would accomplish your wish to see him dead.

I would be against using it in on him.

No, the punishments inflicted for his serious lack of discipline are fine for the human institution of the Church of England.

You may not know this but there was a time when the Church of England used to burn heretics at the stake for the serious infraction of translating the Bible into English or … for witchcraft.

Maybe you could suggest to the Archbishop of Canterbury that this punishment might be resurrected for its members.

Here is how it worked on William Tindale.

  30. There is a test in that comment.

    Wonder who can pass it!!

  31. @John December 22, 2024 at 6:00 am “Probably not applicable in a church setting if you are suggesting that.”

My question: Why not? And tobesides it is not about a church or non church setting. It is about a heinous criminal offense, to wit, sexually interference with a child. That is a very serious offense whether the offender is the pope, a priest, a prime minister, a president, a captain of industry or a boy on the block

@John December 22, 2024 at 6:00 am “David Tudor was a spindly boy at school”

So what? What does that have to do with anything nearly 50 years later? I was a spindly girl of 110 pounds when I left secondary school more than 50 years ago. I am not a spindly 110 pounds anymore. David looks like he is a regular size of the typical 66 year old man, that is, not at all spindly. I am not in favor of the brutality of the car ‘o nine tails for anybody but if you are in favor then if it is works for others, I expect that it would work just fine for your schoolmate/friend.

  32. @John December 22, 2024 at 6:00 am “You may not know this but there was a time when the Church of England used to burn heretics at the stake for the serious infraction of translating the Bible into English or…for witchcraft.”

The English used to do a whole lot of foolishness, and a whole lot of wickedness, including enslaving your black ancestors and mine, and beating them with your favorite cat ‘o nine tails. I am surprised that your black ancestors and mine survived the brutality so that both you and I are here.

  33. 555,

Sorry I have offended you! Theo, though he gets on my nerves, is a good sort. He’s only pulling your leg. I thought you knew that.

  34. I knew that. You would think yourself too superior to have one.

But I there must be at least one you can seek out to perform the much needed exorcism. I don’t think you can manage that yourself.

  35. I look at it from a practical pint of view.

Once the act is done what is the worse that can happen.

The 15 year old girl becomes pregnant.

That is not the end of the world.

In my researches of family genealogy I came across a couple who married in 1911 or thereabouts.

The husband was 48 and the wife 21.

By the time they married, the wife had produced 4 children starting when she was 15.

Older men routinely married younger women and very often relationships began in their teens.

I know of a 14 year old girl who was courted by a 27 year old man and went on to marry to him.

    Quite the opposite.

History has shown that the elites flock to the established churches, with the common c.

As a member of the elite do you go to high church or low church?

High church is usually for the higher ups and better offs in the elites.

    What about you Muhdear?

Did you have your talk yet with your priest?

    Are you high church?

    It is real simple.

Read the Bible and imagine what the early church was like …… no priests, no bishops, no archbishops and no popes.

The fact that I don’t have a priest is a measure of the efforts I made to research my Quaker heritage and try to understand what informed their thinking.

Church is not necessarily a building, but a building can for a while contain a Church, depends on the peeps.

  40. What practical way?????? You see nothing wrong with a twenty-four year old man in authority exercising having sexual relations with a fifteen year old girl based on the fact that it has always been the case and some you know got married.

And what used to happen is that the difference in power condemned the girl to eternal childhood, totally dominated by the man.

P.S. Too superior in intelligence is what you would be thinking. Call them priests, pastors, elders or whatever you like!

There were always leaders in the Church and people from whom guidance was sought.

I don’t care what you call your exorcist as long as his name isn’t Satan. Because we know that Satan cannot cast out Satan.

  41. David Tudor is making the rounds on the BBC World Service.

It makes you wonder how many foreigners we have living in Barbados with fraudulent businesses. Who can remember the English “car dealer” who had links with the DLP and met his untimely death

Hal Austin always warned us that the Irish mafia were embedded in Barbados.

Sadly, as was stated by Theo our domestic media houses are not independent and are incapable of doing their job.

Not to worry. I read that the tourists numbers are buoyant. Tourism is definitely our thing.

    Total rubbish.

The couple I looked at produced 8 children, 4 after the mother got married c. 1911 having had 4 starting at age 15.

I tracked their descendants and found them all over the world, the US, the UK and the Bahamas. Used their obituaries online to construct a family tree. Went down to the great grands.

Many women conceive before they are married.

It isn’t anything strange or untoward, it is natural.

At 15 the girl is a woman in every sense of the word, except she does not have much experience.

She can have a child with no problems.

There are obviously exceptions to the natural rule, but we have no evidence to suggest the girl(s) suffered any trauma as a result of David Tudor’s attentions.

Has there ever been a big cash settlement?

    That is usually a giveaway!!

To me it looks like a few lunatics and evil peeps trying to belittle an institution that’s been around long before they arrived and will be around long after they are gone.

I really don’t pay the hoo haa too much attention.

My mother was low church so ritual and fanfare was of little consequence in our home.

So, David Tudor got caught, so what!!

  46. Bushie

Again in your rebuttal at 8:06 you’ve fallen back on the same book of falsehoods to disprove our arguments. Arguments which extend to those times before any such things known as a bible and religion were known. These both are very recent impositions on mankind given by your albinos. Are there not massive contradictions between your arguments about the albinos and their word of their god.
