LONDON, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby resigned “in sorrow” on Tuesday, saying he had failed to ensure there was a proper investigation into allegations of abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps decades ago.

Welby, the senior bishop of the Church of England and spiritual leader of 85 million Anglicans worldwide, had faced calls to resign after a report last week found he had taken insufficient action to stop a person it described as arguably the Church’s most prolific serial abuser.

  1. John Jackson Smyth QC (27 June 1941 – 11 August 2018) was a Canadian-born British barrister and child abuser who was actively involved in Christian ministry for children within the Anglican Church, as chairman of the Iwerne Trust which raised funds for, and in practice ran, the influential evangelical Iwerne camps. He acted as lawyer for Mary Whitehouse, a Christian morality campaigner.

  2. I am an Anglican and I am glad that the Arch Bishop has finally resigned.

Too much covering up of long term nasty violent sexual behavior against children by this white male, married Canadian/British upper class Queen’s Counsel and father.

  3. Do we have to wonder why people are leaving the Church in droves, especially the Anglican Church?

  4. I still don’t understand why some people, especially men, and sadly way too often “men of the cloth” can’t keep their nasty hands offa de people li’l children.

Thing is the man had a wife at home if he needed somebody to feel up.

Bad and shameful example to his 4 children.

  5. “Reflecting on community institutions of the past, including Sunday school, which helped instil discipline in young people, Marshall stressed that these unquantifiable qualities were vital to building a safer society.”
