What a politically castatrophic situation has befallen the Democratic Labor Party (DLP).The party founded by political stalwarts, and once a powerfully vaulted party in the lexicon of Caribbean politics, has fallen into disrepute. At the helm of this maniacy is Ralph Thorne, with fire in his belly, and a commitment to a political scorched earth mentality.

Mr. Thorne, who while a political backbencher in the [Barbados Labour Party] BLP, could not summon himself to meaningful political discourse, now parades in the DLP, with the mentality of Dr, Kevorkian. Claiming to have crime saving ideas, this officer of the court, only had to walk a few steps across the aisle of the House of Assembly, and reach out to the Attorney General of Barbados, and the Prime Minister of Barbados.

Mr. Thorne you will find yourself in the political potter’s grave, that dooms all who act and behave like you have. My old Ellerslie School teacher, Toney Olton, would always say to his students, “it is better to be thought of as a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” Mr. Thorne you opened your mouth, and from it came political, spiritual and mental midgetry. The Shakesearian end to a meaningless political career, and so it goes.

  1. As I said, you would BUILD the party by contesting only a few seats. That would give one the time to recruit quality candidates and would also require less financing.

The BLP has already won the next election by default. There will be no real danger of a DLP win, what we really really don’t want. It would be safe to vote for a new party.

I suspect that people are often afraid of diluting the vote and ending up handing the government to the party they absolutely wish to reject.

I doubt that it is a rejection of a new party that is the problem.

As for ideology – one can have labour in the name without being for labour. Maybe its time for a real labour party.

What are we supposed to be – democratic socialists or social democrats? I forget.

Whichever or whatever, the main problem is corruption and its offshoot – inefficiency!

But I am just a naive, unrealistic woman, while others here are sophisticated men of the world.

    Don’t mind little old me!

  2. There are many who finds the way Ralph treated Tricia repugnant
and there’si some gossip that she deserved it as she didn’t show respeck

But, from Tricia’s point of view she’s better off not working for that bastard

  3. @Peter

Curious minds want to know why would the two members of the duopoly who are heavily vested in the system do away with it as you suggested?

I am further confused to understand WHY rational Bajans would realistically vote for a 2 or 3 people party knowing that they are simply aiming to be ‘noise makers’ in a parliament.

Do we really think that such a party would be taken seriously !

Obviously any party must develop a team to offer 30 candidates and work the constituencies to bring out the vote for those candidates. If they can’t do that how in the Lord’s name should they expect a majority of votes in any constituency???

The proportional system is a quite different matter about which I say nada!

And Mr Pach, LOL as usual. Covey regardless of race or whatever wrote practical notes about management processes. There are many such scibes/supposed experts so not sure why reading a modern one and not some older one should be such a big deal.

    Peace.

  5. Why create another third party from scratch when there already a few that participate in the last two elections ?
The coalition and solution Barbados can merge to use resources

    I proposed 4 persons earlier
I think 3 with senatorial experience of which one may have been a minister and leader /Founder of a political party
Two admitted they are not interested in elective politics but I think they can contribute as advisors and in PR for the party because of their talents and name recognition

The first assignment should be pushing to have some form of proportional representation representation in the constitution.

Those that want run for parliament will come later in due process

  6. The Westminster system must remain. It ensures the absolute power of our beloved Supreme Leader. The destruction of the DLP only makes sense if, as a shadow of itself, the party continues to legitimise democracy in the future without ever regaining power itself.

Democracy to rule them all, Democracy to find them, Democracy to bring them all and in darkness bind them.

  8. Am I missing something or are both major political parties piss poor at mass based fundraising. If I [and maybe 100,000 others] want to give either or both parties $25, or $50 or $100 now and then or every pension day for the rest of my life why do BOTH parties make it so difficult to donate to them?

Where is the little button in the top right hand corner of their social media pages marked DONATE NOW.

After all 100,000 people x $25 every year for a 5 year period is $12.5 million.

And if that donation can be done monthly over a 5 year period that would be $150 MILLION dollars for whoever wants it. But maybe our parties are
    Rich?
    Don’t like money?
    Prefer wealthy donors?
    Don’t like ordinary people’s money?
    Don’t want “fishcake” money
    Haven’t thought of it?
Don’t trust that we trust them enough to give them .83 cents per day?

    Help me to understand.

  9. @John2
The reason why a new political party would be more effective has more to do with clean strategy to grow the best perception from the public. A new political party will not want to be tagged with a perception that it is an amalgamation of rejected parties.

    @Dee Word

You need to open up your mind a little (a lot). A plan can be a good plan if executed properly. If the message of the new party is that it is building for the future etc would be the approach to take. Appeal to the protest vote, the independent vote etc. Sensible Barbadians can be persuaded that establishing a viable third part will take time.

  11. No Contest
The easiest seat for independents and 3rd Party candidates to run in and do well or even win has to be Christ Church South as it is not even a BLP seat and their MP is a dirty rat a filthy stinking rat who the constituents want out it would be like taking candy out of a baby’s mouth

  12. Targeting the LoO’s seat stratagem

If an Independent (such as the X-Senator TW) ran in Christ Church South and won then they could become the next LoO, if DLP repeat their no scores again

especially if they worked in a coalition deal with BLP
who agree to stand down in this contest

  13. I guess you don’t know anything about building. You think we can’t see further than the next election?

I guess you think we are all stupid.

  14. Wickedness in high places

  15. @David,
In pointing out that a proportional representation representative system would be far better for Barbados than the failed colonial Westminster system, I didn’t mean to imply that the duopoly would ever allow such an improvement to occur.

  16. “I guess you don’t know anything about building. You think we can’t see further than the next election?

I would like to say that people’s actions for improvement should concentrate their efforts and mind’s meditation on the now i.e. the present and not let their thoughts drift to the past and future in their daily work or practice (Sadhana) with their intention and resolution vow (Sankalpa) stated as though their desired goal is already a manifested reality that has been achieved.

  17. We should be careful in discussing how political parties and politics in general treat women. Once one enters politics , the gender gloves on either side are taken off. There are no innocents in politics because those entering are fully aware of the consequences.
Quite frankly pushing any gender argument in our political culture is counter productive. Any one perusing regional current affairs and media or following trends in the corporate Caribbean , would observe that the genders are collectively and productively competing.
We now have quite a number of women who have been Heads of State and Prime Ministers. Several Caribbean countries have women who are cabinet ministers and even some who, although not in Parliament, are powerful players and centers of influence behind the scene.
Furthermore , with the modern acceptance of new concepts of both genders having different lifestyles , the whole question of gender , has taken on different direction. We think that there are more important matters than trying to inject gender differences in national development and discourse. It’s another useless road to travel. Women are more than capable of fighting their political battles. Ask Mia Mottley, who was bludgeoned publicly and has emerged as the foremost political leader in the region.
We were once told by a man , that he has known many ignorant men but he has never met an ignorant woman. He contended that women may play they are ignorant in order to massage the childish egos of men. We were told that over fifty years ago. We concur.

In the white world of bias division and prejudice the pecking order was:

In the black world where lower class became the face of the black community the pecking order was:
    black men
    black women

there are also biases divisions and prejudices with the manifestation of God you pray to

  19. @David

Like SB and the other minor parties?
IMO the “talent “ pool of those that are able to and willing to server without connection to the dopoly is too small

A youth arm of the third part would be incubator for growth free of connection to the duopoly

  20. As BRB politics is also about individuals who are known personalities in their communities..

Independents running for their local constituencies can win their seat and have a voice in Parliament

  21. @Peter

The comment was to clarify for others who often are stuck in binary mode.

  22. @John 2

Now you are getting closer to fashioning practical talking points.

Many have the idea we can parachute anybody into a constituency and have them run without a ‘fit for purpose’ strategy. It will take more, the party they belong to has to brand itself to be relevant to the people, the candidate has to be aligned to the party message while at the same time growing their personal brand that includes having a track record of service to the community etc. The assumption is that in the absence of a maximum leadership with short coattails and zero political capital, it must be about expert planning and execution.

  23. @ David
Is the ‘binary’ thinking not at the level where we (wunna) seem to be fixated with this class of so-called ‘political’ leaders – who are supposed to master the traditional albino-centric science of leadership by greed, ….and take us all to success?

As Einstein famously said, ‘you cannot solve a problem by using the very same thinking that caused the problem in the first place’.

If Bushie was looking for new leadership, the bushman would START by looking in existing areas where we have EXAMPLES of persons who are ALREADY LEADING SUCCESSFULLY in our society.
From this group, Bushie would then seek to RECRUIT THEIR services into the critical NATIONAL LEADERSHIP LEVEL.

Sush areas as NGOs, church, professional, business and social society groups offer clear opportunities to find VOLUNTEER resources with such proven talents.

Any traditional ‘new party’, or ‘youth arm’ of an old party, that seeks to aspire directly to national leadership WILL obviously ATTRACT the very same egotistical, self-focused types that we NEED to avoid.
Who else will face the nastiness of the current political arena in order SERVE and GIVE to the country?
    Would YOU?

It is far more likely that TALENTED persons who are INVITED to serve at this level (and who will HAPPILY LEAVE if asked to, …or if not as successful as expected) would SUCCESSFULLY fill such a void.
Would YOU not be MUCH MORE LIKELY to serve in such circumstances?

Simple common sense rule from the Bible..
‘He who has been faithful in small areas
Look, I will make him ruler over GREAT things..’

  24. This morning Facebook has suspended Tricia Watson’s account… almost certainly because of mass reporting from DLP yardfowls.

This is the level of scumbags that have taken over the party entirely.

  25. @PLT

Did Facebook provide a reason for suspension? I just googled reasons for suspension and there didn’t seem to be many beyond “violation of community standards” or “providing false info re identity” etc.

  26. @Peter

Politics is a nasty business which increasingly explains why ‘good’ people have been withdrawing from the political arena.

I am no longer amused, amazed or surprise, but I am concerned.

Each day, I become more aware of my inability to follow the utterings/mutterings of my fellow Bajans. I see bloggers jumping out with pronouncements, theses, hypotheses, conjectures, assumptions, predictions, conspiracy theories [‘Lawd help me, where is my thesaurus’], but try as I might I am unable to follow the contributions of various bloggers.

In Greek mythology, instead of an island of sirens, we would be described as an island of mad men. We somehow seem unable to accept our impotence, incompetence and reality of our situation. I (a nonbeliever) am forced to pray.

Dear God, take this cup away from me. Why must I be forced to flagellate my countrymen daily? Their skin have become so hardened that the rod of correction no longer affects their behavior. Please, restore within them a sense of reality, take away the cup of madness from them, open their eyes and their brains. The great EWB asked about our mirror images, but such a message is not applicable to the land of the blind.

Father, restore our sight and remove our madness. Let the light of reality and truth shine in our land once more.

    Amen

    I am crying.

David, I challenge your assertion .. I always discuss with an “open mind”. In fact, your blog colleague de Bush Griot oft critiques me as too open when I try to balance the scales with acceptance of valid positions on both sides of the issues.

So let’s agree that ANY plan can be a good plan WHEN “executed properly”.

Thus Oswald and his co-conspirators brilliantly executed their plan on Kennedy and the conspirators then theirs on Oswald. Excellent planning comprehensively there, bro, yes!

So indeed ANY plan, good, bad or criminal, when well executed is brilliant.

My understanding of politics says that starting with anything less than a group large enough to win a possible majority stake in the Bajan parliament could NEVER be properly executed because it’s a POOR, INCOMPLETE plan … it’s one lacking any ability to be ‘properly executed’.

Simply stated, if you are going to be serious about running the country then you must get your complete team (multiple candidates, IT staff, PR, get-out-the-vote workers, fund rising etc).

Here, I would concede that at least 15 -20 constituencies must be contested if you cannot field 30 candidates.

But if you can’t meet that bare minimum of pre-work to energize like minded folks from your community involvement efforts then why are you even putting yourself before Bajans as a national leader!

  35. @Dee Wors

You are good with researching the www.

There are many examples of political parties running a few candidates in an election and over time gradually gaining traction.

In the region you have UPP in Antigua. There is the Green Party in the UK and a couple others.

  36. de Pedantic Dribbler Avatar
    de Pedantic Dribbler

David, sorry brother no can do re UPP!

My Antigua memories are not extensive but surely you can’t position Balwin Spencer’s UPP in context of THIS debate re a new and basically unheard of NEW party.

That group would fall under the umbrella of an NDP startup, surely, that is: already had representation in parliament and leader started a new initially small entity from that base.

    That’s not the context here.

And I very clearly already highlighted party types like the Greens or Climate ideologies …and pointed out that WOULD not work in Bim as a differentiation!

I am trying to be PRACTICAL good sir. We cannot adopt or adapt that platform specific party type here …

Anyhow, let’s see who is crazily bold enough to try that small start method …

    Just ain’t going to happen!

Now if the current AG breaks out of BLP and starts his own UDP with about 7 or 8 colleagues then we may have a thing! 😇

    I dun wid dat.

  37. @Dee Word

We are discussing unknowns here, nothing should be off the table or dismissed because you see not precedent to support it.

    Come on!

    Change the text!

  38. @David
    Yours@9.40 am
If the alleged behaviour is true then what remains of DLP membership aren’t as astute as they may think, it is asinine to stoop to these tactics to try to deny your opponent a presence on Facebook as everyone can play that game.

DLP hierarchy is playing “whack a mole”; expelling people, disabling Facebook; what next?

Thy are expending energy in the wrong areas, BLP is targeting Thorne’s seat “ockey” Donavan is probably preparing another video lambasting Thorne. If I was in the DLP and thinking about running, the next election would be a good one to sit out.

  39. @Sargeant

Thorne’s seat will remain Bee without them having to do anything special simply because the DLP is not perceived by anyone except the most faithful supporter it is worthy of the vote. Sad but true.

  40. Independents and 3rd Parties battle it out to be the opposition and to have a voice in Parliament to represent their cause and constituency.
All they need is is one or more seat to do this and then they hope to rise further.

Right Wing parties around the World see small wins for parties such as AfD and Reform as the template for extremism.

Social Media is a means of communication and connection to a wider public.
Canceling Tricia’s voice on fb shows the DLP are running scared fighting for survival and see her as a threat.

  41. The best Bajans can hope for is that after a few more months of internal turmoil, the DLP will present 30 candidates to contest the next General Elections.

  42. @Hants

What does the exodus of some of these old and young mean for the Thorne leadership? Does it weaken the party?

  43. @ David,

I think it is good for Thorne to show if he is capable of rebuilding the party.

There is still hope for him.
