There was an old lady who lived in a shoe with six hungry children and a light bill for the month so she didn’t know what to do. She went to the bank for a loan, but they said no, “we can’t lend to you.”

A few months later the bank had an opportunity with the Internal Mock Fund (IMF) to receive a 10 million dollar grant, as long as they showed that they helped one vulnerable person. When the old lady tried again, the bank said YES! but only as long as you can show that you used the money to build the capacity to feed your children and pay at least one month’s utilities.

The lady took the money and bought a stove. She then bought a set of pots and pans. She bought a refrigerator. Since the bank managers were coming over to inspect, she spent the rest of the money on 2 bottles of wine, a welcome mat and some balloons.

When the bank managers came they checked off their boxes.

Was the old lady vulnerable? – check
Was money disbursed? – check
Was a new stove bought? – check
Was a new fridge bought? – check
Are the appliances working well? – check
Are there utensils in place? – check
Were utilities paid for the month? – check
Is the old lady happy? – check
Were the managers entertained? – check
Did the children eat? – No

They all smiled. After all, meeting 9 out of 10 goals represented an absolute success!

The bank managers drank the wine said farewell and left a 40 year loan agreement with the old lady. Off they went to the Internal Mock Fund to report that all was well and that the vulnerable were well taken care of. In other words 90% of requirements were met. They then collected their grant and reinvested it to the benefit and joy of their stockholders while publishing a glossy end of year annual report.

Later that night the children asked the old lady “What’s for dinner”

She said, I didn’t have enough left to cook a big meal, so we will just use some noodles flavoured with beef sauce instead. We will have to worry about tomorrow when it comes. Oh, and by the way, the doctor said I might die soon, so here is this loan agreement for you to take care of and don’t forget that next month’s light bill should arrive soon. Night night, sleep tight.

And they all lived happily ever after.

The end.

  1. This tale lacks logic. Is absent a survivalist instinct.

Certainly some firewood and a few BRICKS could have avoided dealing with the long term expenditures and solve many weeks of the absence of food.

Maybe a raw food diet could have too! Clearly more nutritious.

Buying some seeds and planting some around the shoe was a much better medium and long term solution.

    A combination of these.

    Other options.

This old woman could not have been use to poverty at all. Use to feeding hungry mouths of children. Use to being anything other than an upper middle class woe unto man.

When this old woman is dead and gone her children shall be no less hungry, more vulnerable, more impoverished because her’s is a politics about propaganda not transformation.

For transformation would have been, not merely about a loan to quickly ‘eat out’, but about building a culture both in the old lady and children of feeding self.

  2. https://youtu.be/PWf9kUOKvGo?si=nT1r90Pz10aPKk0j

The old lady would not be able to even consider dealing with the death brought by Beryl.

  3. Is Barbados a wealthy country?
A middle-income country with a diversified economy built on tourism and offshore banking, Barbados has one of the Caribbean’s highest incomes per capita.

In 2023, the national debt of Barbados amounted to around 7.48 billion U.S. dollars.

    Barbados GDP 5.7 billion USD
Total IMF Credit Outstanding as of 05/31/2024 409,558,336
    Total Repayments 5,833,332

  4. A round of applause for Mama’s climate clause as Beryl’s bears down south of Barbados as at 5AM forecast.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-caricom-debt-natural-disasters-climate-1.7000644

  5. This is not far enough south to make a substantial difference given the variable as established by an engineer who sometimes writes here that 90 percent of buildings in Barbados are unable to withstand a category five hurricane.

In addition, another variable is the lateral movements of these systems.

    They maybe others

  6. Two more murders in the last day or two. Not even the national merriment of a cricket festival could stop these, the old lady’s attempt to make her children happy in the face of growing poverty.

    More broadly.

As Beryl bears down, given the existential dangers of more violent hurricanes, instead of all these bling-bling events, it’s high time for the country to develop a strategic reserve of building materials and capabilities, to repair or rebuild most of the housing stock within a 3 to 6 months window, like happens in war zones.

Indeed, there should be a collaboration with insurance companies. Even making insurance mandatory. This will be controvertial. The plan must consider these.

Of course these will never be done. For god is a Bajan who shall intervene to stop all disasters. Industrial begging is a cheaper fall back position. Classism requires that those who cannot afford such risks must suffer. And on and on.

This is a purely comedic take on an IMF Report. It might have added, the Bank having met 90% now became eligible to draw on another pool of money since the appliances were electric, the CRF or Climate Resilience Fund came into play. And the big gathering didn’t include the lady, the ultimate borrower, but numerous members of the Bank and the Mock Fund, a 3 day retreat at Sandy Lane. Where it was confirmed the Bank would get 5M Mockcoin on the EFF and another 3M Mockcoin on the CRF. It wouldn’t be authentic without mentioning Mock Fund local representatives, Latisha-Jane Griffith-Thompson and Theresa-Clovell Braithwaite-Hinds.
And the Mock Fund doesn’t “grant” a shite, but the right to borrow. The accompanying report needs 50 pages of graphs, minimum 4 per page, as a sleep aid for all.

  9. Talking about age-ism

We have an existential crisis at the centre of empire. Still without a set of plans to replace from whence the old woman gets here pocketbook money, Barbados doubles down on stupid!

Joe Biden cannot even navigate his way on and off a stage. An American financial empire which has been crumbling, infrastructurally at least for 100 years, and more. As calls mount for his replacement.

Donald Trump another octogenarian being the idiot best positioned to replace him as president will be even more ineffectual than the first time around. The permanent government will outfox him again.

Is this the best a population of 340 million could do? Only fools consider this as democracy when it’s outright fascism in drag!

Yes, this is what corruption at the imperial core will buy you.

We even have the wife of a dead Adelson, thankfully, offering Trump 100 million as a campaign contribution for the annexation of the West Bank with 3 million Palestinians. Of course, Biden, if he’s in charge or the Zionists around him, will take the same deal.

Be Jesus Christ, how could we continue to follow these people?

  10. Reading, but definitely a great post.
Folks have to do their research and not run after the latest fad.
As always, some will make money, but many will be losers.
Try to do some research, look for a track record and remember that past investing history does not necessarily predict what will happen.

  11. Beryl is Category four! That’s a big deal.

We need to begin calling you Pacha Grimm.
Trump is not an Octangerian, he was recently 78.
Two of your heroes, Putin and Xi are 71, and both made changes to allow each to exist in power longer than previously allowed. Both seemingly adhere to mandatory age limits unless it applies to them or close allies.
Maybe the USA needs to dump the two term limit? To be on par with the truly democratic world.
While Modi 73, Ramaphosa 72, (Zuma was 78 when he demitted but is still around at 82), Lula is 78, the Supreme leader of Iran is 85!!. Given the three facing the electorate all have recent wins, in 4 years the founding BRICS partners could all be led by 75+ year old men (that was for Donna), the USA and Iran by 80+ year old men.
Which fairy tale, or was it a dream, the USA was financially crumbling infrastructurally for 100+ years. Or is this an extension of capitalist and neoliberal opposition, and an ‘ipso facto’.
We are still 20 years away from the centennial founding of BWoods, UN, IMF, World Bank etc etc.
Maybe WWIII will pave the way for a complete replacement of the entities of today.

  13. Northern,

Yes, old men are in charge of everything, but the problem is women in charge. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

  14. If the hurricane hits us despite my prayers to our beloved goddess Bim … then at least we’ll be out of debt thanks to the hurricane clause.

    Tron

  15. The debt repay will be deferred you mean.

  16. Well, you know toooo much about toooo little!

And we can adúmbrate extensively but such an endeavor will not assuage your resort to the mere statistics, age-ism.

And yes your numbers might very well be true. However, you have made the basis statistical error, even infantile, about correlation and causation.

Permit us to use one data point to demonstrate thusly. We’ll deal with the highest number. The numerical age of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

His Emminence, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran is supervised by the Assembly of Experts. An elected body made up of experts, scholars, former military generals, etc. A wide range of experts covering all his functions.

Btw, the president of Iran runs the country, as if the day to day manager, executive president. Therefore, it’s a misunderstanding, to equate his role to an executive president as all the others mentioned are. There’s another body who supervises the presidentcy of Iran.

The Assembly of Experts functions include the removal of Ali Khamenei if in their minds, or should mandatory medical tests indicate such, it is determined that he cannot properly carry out his responsibilities.

It must be remembered that Iran is an ancient civilization not a country like American which has barely made it to 240 years with a constitution and national anthem still lionizing chattel slavery.

Further on Iran. Unlike anything anybody in the Collective West knows, is a country, in true Persian style which has vastly more complex social forces. A deep tradition of negotiating, deal making, seeking consensus, as seen in the bazaar culture.

More to the specific point, they are no public officials, and to some extent private officials, within Iran who could escape public accountability. Not even the Supreme Leader himself.

Where are these standards of accountability anywhere in the Collective West?

The whole world knows that Biden is demented. For a country with nuclear weapons, like Seymour Hersh, the question must be properly asked ‘who is in charge’. Could it be possible that an unelected official has his finger on the nuclear button.

Further, we seem to have people behind the scenes pumping him with drugs and trotting him out to fool the people that he’s in charge when we’ve long known that that is impossible.

These same people like Jake Sullivan, Anthony Blinken and quo, convinced that a Trump victory might mean jail time for their Russiagate crimes have an interest in imposing this Biden corpse on the world.

While we must concede that Trump is not less than compos mentís. Last time he was President efforts were made through the so-called Inter-agency processes or the deep state to have him removed.

They argument then are ours now, for disqualification. These include temperament, self interests, self dealing, fascism like Stedly Butler argued. Now a convicted criminal. And on and on.

Please, the distortion of a singular data point is insufficient to approach a conclusion on such weighty matters. But when an American empire which pretends to rule the world but for a number of election cycles that system can’t find another Jack Kennedy or ever a semiliterate George Bush it must signal its end.

You make have the last word!

  17. Btw, anybody who contends that infrastructurally America is not the same as 100 years ago then go to the train stations in NYC or almost all the cities on the Eastern Seaboard.

Then compare them to similar facilities in Shanghai, Beijing, Moscow, Saint Pertersburg, Tehran and many other cities of BRICKS countries.

  18. How about comparing them to 100 yrs ago?

We know you despise the West.
Yet, you spout about the Assembly of Experts, while knowing full well all members must have the blessing of the Guardian Council, all of whom, clerics and legal are appointed by the Supreme Leader?? Tantamount to foxes guarding the foxes, guarding the hen house.
And then try to convince (yourself?) there is oversight more meaningful than elsewhere.
And since you opted to pick Persia, you frequently berate the Bushman for his support of some ancient book, while the same Persia is even more guided by another similar ancient book?
You will not find me supporting Biden’s current physical or mental status. That is for Americans to decide.

May all Barbadians be safe over the coming hours.

  23. Keep safe everyone! Hoping for minimal damage when the sun rises.

  24. If as has been suggested, Barbados will not receive a direct hit. We will see whether Mia”s government fixed the roof during the many years when the sun shone. Or, whether her government misspent the many loans received as well as the wholesale pilfering of the NIS funds which they distributed to largely vanity projects and to minority community businesses.

Let’s hope that Mia has made pragmatic decisions over the years to cover all contingencies for at least a category 4 hurricane.

Fancy foreign trips and promoting Brand Barbados as the Monaco of the Caribbean is fine. But not at the expense of the country’s too many poor quality roofs. I don’t want Barbados to receive a direct hit. I would however like the hurricane to give Barbados a stress test. A test to see if Mia took her eye of the ball with her leadership of the country.

  25. I have just watched the video that Hants sent featuring Mia’s favourite Santia and the hapless Abraham. By the sound of it, this government has not made any plans in the event of a hurricane striking the country. Has Minister Abraham just realised that Barbados has a litter problem? Again, they are pointing a finger at Barbadians.

  26. Plan, what plan? Our plan is called Mia Mottley. As high priestess of the goddess Bim, she has steered demonic Beryl south towards Grenada.

The ancient gods of Africa have once again protected us because we believe in Mia Mottley, their high priestess.

  28. hurricane force gusts.

  29. @Observing

Look like Barbados escaped major damage. We don’t have to trigger that climate clause after all. Mama has done it again!

  30. @David
yes indeed we have “Escaped” again. Despite the damage in some areas Barbados is EXTREMELY fortunate to have been spared Cat 4 winds

    @TLSN
As a country “we ain’t ready” for any serious hurricane or storm. I would hate to have to be hit by one but it’s time everyone took it seriously.

    @Tron
    “our plan is Mia Mottley”

I think most of us realise that to be the case. And the folly that comes with it. We will all “move along” at some point. This 166 sq. miles needs much much more than simply rabid adoration for an internationally recognised maxim leader.

As humourous as this thread was meant to be, we have to do much much more than just “tick boxes” and “sound pretty.” More on that later.

    Continue to keep safe peoples

  31. Good to hear that Barbados ‘dodged’ a serious weather event. Some of the claims being made by some folks are hard to believe. I will just give thanks that the island was spared.

  32. There isn’t any country in the world that, despite its level of financial resources, is adequately prepared for the effects of any natural disaster, whether it’s a hurricane, flood, monsoon, tornado, earthquake or volcano eruption.

Some sources describe category 4 hurricanes as having ‘extremely dangerous winds with sustained speeds ranging from 130 – 156 miles per hour, causing catastrophic damage or destruction to infrastructure, including well-built homes receiving severe damage, loss of LIVES and properties…… and power outages lasting from several days to weeks.’

Why would any SANE individual who says he is interested in the well-being of Barbados, would want poor Barbadians to be affected by a hurricane of such magnitude, even if partially, and suffer such consequences, just for him to determine whether or not “Mia took her eye of the ball with her leadership of the country?”

I remember a song I used to hear a song on Rediffusion when I was a youngster that included the lyrics, “I woke up in love this morning, went to sleep with you on my mind.”

Perhaps we could rearrange the lyrics to: “I woke up to criticise this morning, went to sleep with Mia Mottley on my mind.”

  33. @Artax

You know only too well PM Mottley has set herself up as #bigworks. This translates to high expectations set by her.

  34. Tron is an excellent ‘tongue in cheek’ writer.

I cannot believe people actually take him seriously.

  35. @ David

There isn’t any reasonable correlation between the two.

Or, are you suggesting we should be willing to RISK the LIVES of Barbadians just to test ‘Mottley setting up herself as #bigworks?’

But, then again, I’m appallingly ignorant and learnt by rote.

  36. @Artax

Some people use satire and absurdity to make provoke serious reflection.

  37. @Artax

You are being a little too serious minded that is all.

There should be no doubt in the minds of anyone tuned to local affairs that all roads lead to Mottley about key decisions in a bigger way than it did Barrow a la Duffus.

One can only breathe a sigh of relief and stand in solidarity with our Caribbean brothers and sisters until our turn comes.

    The future is frightening.

  42. “You are being a little too serious minded that is all.”

    @ David

I don’t want to belabour the argument, but when one takes Rudder’s medical condition into consideration, ‘the same sentiments could be expressed’ about your “David Rudder’s World Cup ‘rally’ was flat” thread.

Yet, your response to those of us who disagreed with you was you’re “never afraid to hold an unpopular or minority view,” and told Mr. Skinner he “needs to appreciate that people have different opinions.”

Similarly, I’m ‘not afraid to hold an unpopular or minority opinion,’ which should be respected as well.

I’m fully aware “all roads lead to Mottley about key decisions.” But, for someone to hope that Barbados should be partially affected by a category 4 hurricane just to test her decision making is ‘delving into the realm of absurdity.’

Barbados did not suffer a direct hit by ‘Hurricane Beryl.’

Unfortunately, however, several boats at the Bridgetown fisheries complex were either damaged, destroyed or sank as a result of its passage.
This would’ve ultimately taken a devastating toll on the livelihood of several fisherfolk, thereby increasing their socio-economic vulnerability and seriously impacting their ability to recover therefrom.

Perhaps you or someone may want to explain how the unfortunate loss of livelihood, property or life be appropriate ‘tests to see if Mia took her eye of the ball with her leadership of the country.’

  43. Beryl had the choice between various highly indebted islands. Naturally, he did not choose Barbados because our debt is particularly high and the damage would have been enormous for the creditors … thanks to climate clauses.
