A poem by Barbados cultural ambassador, Anthony ‘Gabby’ Carter, on the death of
Elizabeth Windsor, queen of England has generated unwarranted criticism from
certain quarters on the island. The poem, reprinted below, points out some truths
about the British monarch and her relationship to the crimes of British colonialism.

For those with a strong allegiance to British colonialism, these truths were a bitter pill
to swallow and so, just like Malcolm X described, they jumped to the defence of their
colonial ‘massa’. Local media reported that some people labelled the poem as
“disrespectful”, “distasteful” and “uncivilised” while others demanded that the
Barbados government revoke Gabby’s National Honour status if he does not
apologise for penning the poem. Guy Hewitt, former Barbados High Commissioner to
the United Kingdom and recent contender for leadership of the opposition
Democratic Labour Party is reported as having strongly condemned the poem and
described it as bringing dishonour to Barbados. He is also reported to have stated
that not only was the poem in poor taste but that it also, “displayed Gabby’s
ignorance of the role of a constitutional monarchy, the history of the Commonwealth
of Nations and the late Queen’s role in it.”

In reality, it is those who are attacking Gabby and his poem who are bringing
dishonour on the country. Even as the country is trying to step forward as a new
republic, they are trying to honour and glorify its monarchical past under which the
African descendants were enslaved and subjected to every indignity under Britain’s
colonial apartheid. Those who want to defend Britain’s colonial crimes against the
people of Barbados but lack the courage to do so openly, try to frame the issue as
one of respect for the dead. But let Vladimir Putin die suddenly tomorrow and you
will see how much they believe in not speaking ill of the dead. How exactly was this
respect for the dead demonstrated on the death of Muammar Gadhafi, Robert
Mugabe or any other political leader that came into conflict with British colonialism?
No, this has nothing to do with respecting the dead and everything to do with
defending Britain’s colonial crimes.

Those who claim that Gabby doesn’t understand “the role of a constitutional
monarchy, the history of the Commonwealth of Nations and the late Queen’s role in
it” demonstrate with this statement that they are the ones who are ignorant of
Britain’s colonialist political system and the role that its monarchy and royal family
play in this oppressive arrangement. If Guy Hewitt’s words have been accurately
reported in the media, he has a lot of explaining to do to the people of Barbados.
Why is someone who aspires to political leadership in our country condoning and
justifying Britain’s colonial crimes against our people? Why is he attempting to falsify
history in order to justify these crimes? What type of political leadership can such an
individual provide?

Gabby is right and his poem expresses the sentiments of many Bajans. We need to
raise our voices and make this clear so that those trapped in mental slavery
understand that they’re not going to be able to drag us back or stop our forward
march.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO RUBBISH

She was over there in Africa
When she get de news
She father dead
She’ll be de British Head
No hesitation
No excuse !
There she was
Age twenty one
In the prime of her health
Flying home
Not to roam
But to Queen of the Commonwealth !
Queen of all of India
And New Zealand too
Canada and Australia
Mixed up in de brew
The English – speaking Caribbean
Will now become her tool
Over all these places
Young Lizzy will Rule !
All their natural resources
She hoarded
With an Iron Fist
Britania kept on rolling
Lizzy did see to this!
This quiet
Wicked Woman
Never lifted a hand
To help bring Reparations
To any Caribbean land

She stood in silence
( And full support )
When one Winston Churchill
Killed millions of poor Indians
Oh what a bitter pill !
She never uttered a single word
Against that Peta Botha
Whose Apartheid Regime
Unleashed its killer Beam
On the Blacks of South Africa
She inherited millions of pounds
From the gains of slavery
Yet she allowed each colony
To wallow in poverty
Seventy five
Long hard years
This Monarch Liz did Reign
She made sure her colonies
Made no economic gain
A few hours ago
We got the news
No lies
Fakes news or tricks
That Lizzy
Queen of England died
At the age of ninety six
I can’t offer no sympathy
I’ve never been a hypocrite
Her son Charlie
Is sure to be

Sitting where she did sit
At last !
He will become the Monarch
The British Ruler
The King !
If he brings us Reparations
Then I will support him !

In the real world nobody calls themselves intellectuals and nobody boasts about winning a scholarship in their old age.

But can any imagine reading a book John Knox wrote about slavery, everyone would be livid and would burn down all the plantations and lynch the owners.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The plantations are owned by foreign entities and Government associates!!

Have you suddenly realized how you have been hoodwinked into believing a slavery narrative that may be provably false?

You still don’t get it, do you?

Early in this process I wrote that the PM in her haste to meet a self-imposed deadline “put the Republic horse before the Constitutional cart” and nothing that has transpired so far has made me reassess my position.

I for one would like to know the fate of the Republican Status Transition Advisory Committee (a mouthful) that was supposed to advise the Govt and submit a final report on some aspects of the change to Republican status by Sept.2021. Is it still functioning, were the terms of its operation changed? Will it go on a road tour to get feedback on what kind of Republic Barbados should have?

Maybe there is no need for a revised Constitution, just leaf through the document and wherever the word Queen/King appears – strike it out and insert President- problem solved.

  10. @Sargeant

Isn’t there the Constitutional Review Committee currently doing its work?

@David, @Northern et al, we are arguing an arcane point of process re the Constitution doc. There is no significant historical precedent to validate that such completion of a document before transition is required.

Consider of course that the US constitution was written and enacted long after their independence; Germany similarly formed its union long before revising and enacting their current charter. Canada too has an updated constitution that’s based on an older document.

So what’s the hullabaloo… it’s definitely not a “pappy show” gentlemen!

There is time enough to produce a new charter that guides us for the next 50 or 100 years … and we lose nothing by drafting and delaying it’s implementation having already jettisoned the monarchy.

Not a SINGLE right, disruption of governance; international relations NOTHING!

But in the historical scheme of things we gained great notoriety as now being the last nation to dismiss dear Elizabeth before she left this mortal coil… 😎😇

So the real pappy show is all the many other nations seeking to rush through the door we so leisurely just exited!

And respectfully to Sir Henry but his wisdom has already been carefully and properly documented re his commission report along with the various notes and advisement he surely has already given on this matter … beyond a doubt there are many other knowledgeable folks who will complete what needs to be done.

    Peace out.

  13. @David
Seems I was a step behind, I either missed or forgot about the Constitutional Review Committee which includes some members of the former advisory committee.

Based on the attached article, I wonder what kind of advice if any was provided to the Gov’t by the RSTAC.

    Consider of course that the US constitution was written and enacted long after their independence;
    +++++++
Well seeing that it was fighting a Revolutionary war to get its Independence from Britain, it would hardly have time to sit down and draft a Constitution, I could see it now, Washington telling his compadres “Lets draft a constitution before we throw out George 111”. However, if you think that the comparison to Barbados is apt, well………..

I hope our esteemed Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley, aka – missing in action; is cognisant as to the civil unrest unfolding in Haiti.

Mark my words, one can never discount such events unfolding in little England. We have the perfect mix of ingredients and a disenfranchised majority black population who have nothing to lose.

Why our Prime Minister should continue to surround herself with a cast of minorities and show preference to them over her own people is treasonous. Why any reasonable black leader choses to deliberately underdevelop and disenfranchise their own people is a disgrace.

For decades we have talked of an impending scenario such as a tsunami wiping out large chunks of territory in the Caribbean. There’s more of a chance of our region being burnt to the ground than any natural catastrophe preceding it thanks to our demonic corrupt leaders.

Mia should reflect on the story of Jonah who had to be tossed overboard in order to prolong the lives of his fellow crew. I will leave the BU family to draw their own conclusions.

….the distraction yesterday, failed attempt, was just that, but the information is everywhere in Barbados and across the region….and in the wider diaspora……people are sharing because they NEED TO KNOW…..and it’s just another form of disenfranchisement keeping it away from the people.

Every site has the information and am still not seeing it on here.

@Sargeant, you bring forth a graphic imagery of pistols and muskets warfare with the Brits juxtaposed to the tea and fish cakes soiree ‘fight’ we recently ‘fought’ with them.. Good stuff as far as images go … but do tell how does that stark different circumstances PRECEDING the break with the Brits inform when and how drafting and implementing the constitutional charter impacted the nations’ future life differently?

I gave three examples and could have cited more of nations who gained independence or cut ties from colonial masters and then subsequently completed and enacted the rules and principles to constitute their society.

Whether nations gained independence by force of arms or peaceful transition is totally irrelevant, good sir; it’s what came after.

A constitution is nothing more than a set of rules … Are we really, really arguing that Barbados was disadvantaged these last two years because we did not have some newly revised Republican set of rules under which to operate … HOW so folks … HOW SO???

Are we not governed currently by established rules and regulations …

… Can anyone express in general or specific ways what local or international conditions were distressed because we have not yet modified to our Republic charter.

This is a sweet, many worded lotta long talk across talk radio and social media but there is NOTHING on a practical level that informs problems for Bim.

I mean we can spill more words on the seeming nonsense of a ‘Dame’ from the monarchial titles and peerage elitism sitting as HoS in our new Republic or the fact that GIS still had the GG descriptors on some of their media materials … but that is not SERIOUS stuff !

Let’s get our revised constitutional charter done …. and put aside this chatter… it’s of no meaningful consequence!

  23. ” Speaking in front of a crowd in National Heroes Square in Bridgetown, once known as Trafalgar Square, he said: “From the darkest days of our past, and the appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our histories, the people of this island forged their path with extraordinary fortitude. “

  24. @dpd
While you make several valid points, they were also while similar, different situations.
The Canada situation, saw ‘independence’ come via the BNA Act which was an act within the British Parliament. As such, Canada could not amend it’s Constitution without approval from London. So what occured in ’82, patriation, was making it an Act of Canada, hence owning it and not requiring approval for alterations going forward. The Monarch remained, and remains, the Head of State. And for the record, talk of patriation began 20 years before it happened.
Barbados from independence always owned its Constitution.
Appreciating there are several forms of Republic, the Barbados move was a punting of a foreign Head of State, and replacing with a local one. The type was never discussed, publicly.
Given the constitutional quandary which occured after the 2018 election, one might have thought consideration to at least the constitutional formation of the upper and lower Houses might have occured, before another election?
Your point has power, in that actions post the most recent election, suggest the Constitution is little more than a guide. Hence, constitutional changes can be made ‘in time’, if at all.
We may be happy with any ambiguity, for it consolidates power in the executive head?
And while I expect, but without your supreme level of confidence, that amongst the island’s plethora of lawyers, there will be those with constitutional specialty, they were fairly mum after the most recent election.

“Gabby was appointed a cultural ambassador by a previously constitutional GOB.”

well ya see wuh de cultural ambassador do….he int have no plans to fall into that set up/trap……because that is all it would be and a real disgrace if he even thought of accepting any such an invitation to some additional fantasy world…

John…..not even the white brits are comfortable with that fairy tale anymore…..but you do have the sheep and slaves combined….who will be around for a while longer until their masters tire of them when they want to further clean up their image….and then…..

  46. So sad that you have no power to fire him.

The majority population defines what is our culture.

Long time ago we embraced calypsonian the MIGHTY Gabby as our mouth piece!

So talk yuh talk but doan touch he yuh!

On another note, Michelle Obama is a mother and a wife, respected by many worldwide. A lady of grace and dignity. And though I disagree very strongly with her husband’s deadly foreign policy in pursuit of continued American domination, I expect to see respect shown to her as to this queen, the keeper of stolen loot.

There is a large segment of Africa that curses Obama and I cannot fault them. Though Michelle is not responsible for the actions of her husband, I am sure she supported him. Brainwashing did not start or end with the British Empire.

If the queen is to be respected, so should Michelle be respected.

    How about THAT?
