Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

August 2 signals another Emancipation Day, another public holiday for the masses to revel in the carnival season and engage other leisure activities – a few may reflect on what the day is intended. Emphasis on a few if one measures public participation at events arranged to celebrate the day.

In her Emancipation Day message Prime Minister implores Bajans to not just commemorate the emancipation of our forefathers from chattel slavery but “celebrate the lives and efforts of our African forefathers to end slavery. In remembering these things, let us understand that while the seas may get rough and while the struggle may be long, together we can and will see these challenges through. That is to say that egos, matters of self-interest and tribalism must give way to the way of thinking and the lifestyle that saw communities raise children and societies raise the bar”.

The blogmaster finds no fault with the message by prime minister Mottley asking us to be inspired to overcome the challenges before us by what our forefathers had to achieve breaking the chains of physical slavery. Maya Angelou in her inimitable style encapsulates the importance of the past with a practical definition- “I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going, but I’m a person of the moment. I’m here, and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I’m at, then I go forward to the next place“.

We have to do better to help Barbadians sustain the awareness around the struggle of Blacks for liberation. The blogmaster is satisfied our children are given sufficient exposure at the primary and secondary level to be aware of the struggle. Where we continue to fail as a society is our inability to feed a culture to support our people being energized by the heroic achievement of our forefathers. Instead we have allow edourselves to become overwhelmed by the miasma of popular foreign culture which by and large continues to lock our people into another form of bondage- economic and mental slavery.

To Prime Minister Mia Mottley again we say, a nice sounding message, a message that will tick the box on the checklist for the day, however, inquiring minds wonder- what about the need to find practical approaches to assist citizens translate your nice sounding message to relevant daily activities? We have become a people characterized by revelry, indolence and lawlessness, antithetical to the traditional value set that underpinned the behaviour of our forefathers.

So Prime Minister Mottley, your message will be received as empty by a majority of the population because the discrete actions required to invoke meaning for the general population is MIA.

  2. Also empty are those 2×4 slave houses being built by govt for barbadians to purchase
Where is the pride in those design that would make the purchaser feel that what they are purchasing was designed to infuse a self of well being and comfortable home life
Those 2×4 houses are in no way composed of love and pride but built on political spin thrown together as political dogma and govt version of apple pie

The problem here may not be the size of the houses but the regulations governing ownership. The houses if they are as small/inadequate as people suggest, should be exclusively for two persons or two persons with no more than two small children. From what I have read there is room for extensions and that can be done by the owners as the children become older. The prices of these houses should be restricted to very small incomes.
I don’t see them as “ slave huts” . We know about people growing up in one roof houses.
The major problem with public housing throughout the years is the blatant lack of proper regulations that has now evolved into a national crisis.
Needless to say housing like everything else was deliberately turned into a vote catching political foot ball by both parties.
Pay a visit to Wildey and you can see what people have done to the relatively small chattel houses they bought a few decades ago. They have developed into very comfortable homes.
    Peace.

  8. The houses are of similar size to the ones built by your government at Lancaster, St. Patrick’s and elsewhere. There is a reason they are called starter homes for working class people.

One should be thankful for small mercies. The admission that the speech was empty , may be the fact that the so- called brilliant rhetoric is finally being examined a bit more closely.
Perhaps the old Bajan saying : talk is cheap, is finally finding its way into the minds of those who relish presentation and pay no attention to content.
    Peace.

  10. Maybe next time after your aversion to rubbing shoulders with members of the public passes you will be able to secure a flight to see the houses up close. It will be therapeutic to get out of the social media bubble into the real Bajan terrain.

Question: were the above built during the lost decade ?
So are you saying that the current housing policies bear some similarity to those built during the lost decade.
    The Duopoly in full force…………….
    Peace.

  14. Housing for low income will have the same characteristics, this is a non point. The issue in the last decade was houses built at Constant, Parish Land, Greenes and other places were allowed to dry rot because of a myriad of admin problems saddled with incompetence. Let us hope this time around there isn’t a repeat.

“Well, if the so-called emancipation day is empty, how could any speech be substantive?”

they need to stop with the boilerplate/template of empty speeches where our ancestors are concerned, they have no cared ANYTHING about what they suffered previously or what WE have suffered in the last hundred years so i don’t know where this pretense is coming from or WHERE THEY THINK THEY ARE GOING WITH IT…..now that EVERYONE is on to them..

every time they have to USE TAXPAYERS MONEY or loans TAKEN in the majority population’s name to build or do anything, as the people’s employees, it has to turn into some slumlike ghetto fabulous SMALL unfit SHITE that goes nowhere, deteriorates and ROTS AWAY…

…maybe if they will UPLIFT AND PROMOTE their AFRIKAN POPULATION using their money as they do the minorities who must have everything big, exotic and expensive at AFRIKAN PEOPLE’S EXPENSE maybe we will actually see them as doing something GENUINE AND NOT SELF-SERVING…

“Emancipation Day, like christmas, is about form without substance. The pretense that the unreality is real.”

they need to STOP PRETENDING where this is concerned…first off…THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT regarding our ancestors……..because they spent too many decades being concerned with ENRICHING OTHER PEOPLE AT AFRIKAN PEOPLE’S EXPENSE.. so i don’t know what game they are playing now, they NEVER cared if their people have GENERATIONAL WEALTH or not, they STILL DON’T..the poorer and dependent the better as mindless voters with no opportunities and nothing uplifting to look forward to except the designation of cult fowl/Slaves…just accepting of empty slick talk..

there is blood in the water…..plenty of it…

We have several players on the field – batsmen, bowlers and an all allrounder.
Have a great day, I will be in the spectator stand watching my favorite bowler.

Have a great day Barbados. It does not really matter
what is the size of your house,
    what it is built of,
if it was promised and has yet to delivered or if it was delivered,
    Chinese or built by locals
I want you to ENJOY THE DAY

The brilliant HA used to say… it was not a problem of corruption; it is mainly incompetence. But it is both.

  19. The houses at Cloverly cannot be compared to those which govt called dwellings
If a person says that a queen size bed cannot fit within a comfortable space within those house something is wrong with the design
Yes I would refer to them as slave houses because of the miniature sizes
Also asking a person to build to expand those houses in the future would depend on many factors
Life is not a straight line many grey areas are included think about that
After the house is bought expansion cost money and whether or not cost of living would afford a single parent to do so

  20. Why not have a govt sponsored program where people can borrow the money and build their own home

You worry ur head about the wrong things

Did the woman pay for a house and got one that was smaller than she expected ?
    Or
Did she view the house and have the option to pay for something else to her liking ?

Emancipation has never been about real resources for ordinary people.

And public housing continues to be a bad substitution for just resource allocation.

These irrational attempts to build a society supportive of ordinary people not rooted in economic participation, at the centre, was always antidevelopmental.

Building houses alone for people forever on the margins end up being slums. Has this not been our experience.

  24. William Skinner Avatar
    William Skinner

    @ Pacha
No disagreement here. However, as you are aware they allow everything to deteriorate because they refuse to regulate the housing projects.
For example if a member of parliament gets a constituent a house, he or she does not care if twenty people live there once he can they can brag and get the votes.
You are also quite aware that there has been no genuine attempts to bring true economic participation to the masses.
Now we are in the clutches of the IMF and other international money lending sharks, they can’t even think about any economic participatory democracy designed to benefit poor people.
That’s why we have a backlog of thousands waiting on houses from government. The poor have no choice.
We have collectively both inside and outside of parliament failed the people.

I will support NO SUCH THING especially with their historical misdeeds and plots where robbing the continent with their MINORITY CROOK FRIENDS in the crimmunity will always be high on their agendas…..

…remember the fintech scam directed at Nigeria….they already STARTED WRONG…very wrong…but at least Afrika knows…..what support what….they had the OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT as the Afrikan leadership asked and they allowed their fellow crooks to DICTATE THAT THEY BE ALLOWED to take the place of Afrikan descents which turned out badly……these traitors tell their partners in crime everything and tell the inheritors and descents NOTHING…

It is the fixation on using respectability as a patina to ignore historic crimes which bedevil us to this day.

Even elite Blacks building all of these mansions seldom have the resources to maintain them beyond current working years.

Didn’t the NHC Official say the houses could be extended?

Over the years, prospective homeowners have criticised houses built by the NHC under successive BLP and DLP administrations.
The most popular complaint is usually ‘the bedrooms are too small for a ‘king or queen sized’ bed.’

However, I can’t believe that YOU’RE the SAME PERSON who, using the name, ‘angela Skeete,’ was defending former administration’s ‘Housing Every Last Person (H.E.L.P)’ program, Housing Minister Denis Kellman praising the 2×2 houses the NHC built at Lancaster St. James……the hundred and twenty (120) 2×2 houses built at Parish Land, Christ Church that remained unoccupied, overrun by vines, rotting and deteriorating for over seven (7) years.

As usual, angela cox is attempting to shift the focus from the substantive topic to push her political agenda.

Well did not the crystal Ball called Covid showed up and sprung into action displaying that plans can be dismantled
The fact being that govt plan should have included a long term plan of financial and economical ready preservation for the purchaser
Constructed with a strong financial foundation in the event economical factors tore away at the purchaser intentions to called that house their final home
After Covid can’t imagine anyone having long terms plans which might be met with a rearrangement of plans which were for better
The purchaser should have been able to.look at that house at first site and think it as a wise long term investment one that can be profitable driven and not one which will require additional planning and financial cost longer down the road
Being told oh but the purchaser can do this or that is a ploy built on a plot of political land poo..

  32. Remember in my childhood days parents took pride in controlling pocket book and did so
Buying shoes for school or holidays was a must
Children would try on the shoes that most likely fit their parents pocket book cost wise
Those shoes not always were comfortable because they were tight somewhat but enough space for them to wear and wiggle their toes during or when discomfort occurred
Some children would appeal such to their mother but replies such as oh there are not that bad and your feet would adjust
Needles to say the feet outgrew those shoes rapidly and purchasing the right size over a period of time cost more for a new pair

    Xxx
I relate this story as an example that cost cutting measures that seem to be working first hand to an.individual factors unseen or not taken into consideration can be detrimental long term in differing ways
Costing the purchaser pain and increased cost

“Indigenous Australian Senator Raises Fist, Calls Queen Elizabeth a ‘Colonizer’ as She’s Sworn Into Office”

“An Australian senator took aim at Queen Elizabeth by calling her a colonizer as she recited an oath of allegiance to the monarch, who is still head of state in Australia.

Lidia Thrope — the first Aboriginal Australian senator from Victoria who is of DjabWurrung, Gunnai and Gunditjmara descent — had her swearing-in ceremony on Monday at Australia’s Parliament House. She approached the floor with her right fist raised in the air and was asked to recite the traditional oath of office.

“I, sovereign Lidia Thorpe, do solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare that I will be faithful, and I bear true allegiance to the colonizing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Thorpe said before being cut off by Senate President Sue Lines and objections from others.

One senator said, “You’re not a senator if you don’t do it properly.”

Thorpe also turned around to tell someone, “You’ve got to have some respect.”

Thorpe’s party, the Australian Greens party, says on its website, “The continued legacy of colonialism has not yet fully recognized the sovereignty of our First Nations peoples across the entire continent of Australia. This is a wrong that must be made right. Endemic racism, oppressive laws and policies, misunderstanding, ignorance and the lack of knowledge and education has meant that First Nations peoples have generationally been subject to policies and legislation that have impoverished many lives. At present, many still live in poverty and disadvantage, without the same rights and services that other Australians enjoy. This must be changed so that future generations of First Nations children can dream of better things.””

  40. As I have mentioned on previous occasions, there aren’t any significant differences between the former DLP administration’s ‘Housing Every Last Person (H.E.L.P) and the current BLP administration’s Home Ownership Providing Energy (H.O.P.E) Project.

For example, there are similarities between the DLP’s ‘Estates at Coverley,’ Coverley, Christ Church and the BLP’s ‘Atlantic Breeze Lifestyle Development,’ at Chancery Lane, Christ Church, especially as it relates to the terms and conditions of residence…… and, the individual whose company constructed the houses.
As such, it would hypocritical of angela cox to defend ‘Coverley’ and criticise ‘Atlantic Breeze’…… or Enuff and Lorenzo to criticise ‘Coverley’, while supporting ‘Atlantic Breeze.’

Additionally, successive BLP and DLP administrations have failed to present progressive, innovative housing policies during their tenures.
And, ‘political sound bites’ on housing solutions spewed by Housing Ministers from both political parties, have essentially been ‘vote soliciting rhetoric.’

  45. “PRIME MINISTER MIA MOTTLEY DELIVERS AN EMPTY EMANCIPATION DAY MESSAGE”

I would not expect anything more from an individual who does not have a drop of Pan Africanism within her body. I would describe Mia Mottley as firstly a member of the elite. She probably has a pathological dislike for her own black people and is embarrassed at having to “celebrate” emancipation day with the lowly masses.

How in God’s name have we ended up electing a Prime Minister who does not believe in democratic values. She has shoe horned the country into becoming a republic in order to strengthen her power base. This is the same person who would like to expand the population by 70,000 by bringing over foreigners. After emancipation, the owners of the plantations flooded the island with indentured Indians. Whilst in South America, a policy was put in place to alter that continent’s racial demographics.
