“…for they know not what they did”
DEATH AT BARBADOS’ MAIN HOSPITAL

The shocking truth about Mel Harding’s sudden death at Queen Elisabeth Hospital Barbados.
Barbados and the world lost a great man and outstanding citizen: Mel A. Harding, only 58 years old.
Top manager of the Crane Resort, Pioneer of Recycling in the Caribbean, father of internationally known musicians/filmmaker Jermaine and Jamar Harding and husband of Denise Harding, originally from Switzerland and married to Mel for 35 years.
He was admitted to the Emergency Department of Queen Elisabeth Hospital by Ambulance and diagnosed with a bleeding in the brain. He was put in a coma and after 2 days in intensive care he passed away. Had the family not requested an autopsy and engaged 3 medical specialists to study all medical records, the real reason of death would not be known. It would be recorded as just another case of: “death due to complications of a stroke”.

  2. Well!family members if u have the medical facts which can prove medical malpractice pursue with all the intensity and vigor possible
Sorry to hear about your loss

  3. Doctors are known to make errors and it is one of the highest causes leading to death.
“Doctors are known to possess over inflated egos” is an understatement.

  4. He was admitted to the Emergency Department of Queen Elisabeth Hospital by Ambulance and diagnosed with a bleeding in the brain.
WHY WAS THIS DIAGNOSIS MADE? WHAT WERE THE SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS?
WAS THIS A REASONABLE CHOICE IN THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE PRESENTING SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS?

He was put in a coma and after 2 days in intensive care he passed away.
ARE WE TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS PATIENT WAS PUT IN A COMA AS PART OF THEIR THERAPY?
IS THIS A FACT OR IS THIS AN OPINION THAT THE PATIENT WAS PUT IN A COMA?

Had the family not requested an autopsy and engaged 3 medical specialists to study all medical records, the real reason of death would not be known.
IS THIS NOT THE PERSON FOR DOING AUTOPSIES?
It would be recorded as just another case of: “death due to complications of a stroke”.
    HOW DO WE KNOW THIS?
    IS THIS NOT IRRESPONSIBLE SPECULATION.?
THIS IS A MOST IRRESPONSIBLE POST?
    THIS IS MOST IRRESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM.
NO SERIOUS BONE FIDE NEWSPAPER WOULD PRINT THIS EMOTIVE RUBBISH.

IN WHAT DISCIPLINES WERE THE “3 SPECIALISTS” CERTIFIED IN?. OBS & GYNAE? ORTHOPAEDICS? PSYCHIATRY> PAEDIATICS? DERMATOLOGY? BU BRIMBOLOGIST? EPIDEMIOLOGIST?

WE KNOW THAT THESE 3 SPECIALIST HAVE NEVER MISDIAGNOSED ANY ONE EVER YET SINCE THEY WERE MEDICAL STUDENTS.

WE KNOW THAT THE BU BETZPAENIC BRIMBLERS AND MEDICAL ILLITERATES HAVE A IOO% RECORD IN THEIR DIAGNOSTIC RECORD.
I TELL YOU THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN.
COME ON FELLOWS BRING ON THE MIRTH

I WILL ADDRESS THE REST OF THIS LATER

  6. But the truth is very disturbing:
IT IS ALWAYS DISTURBING WHEN A DR LOSES A PATIENT

It turned out that Mel had very little blood in the brain and the chance of survival was indeed very high.
HOW DO WE KNOW THAT.DID GOD WRITE THIS OPINION?

He died of “Pulmonary Thromboembolism” – a blood clot in the lungs and not the tiny amount of bleeding in the brain.
IS THIS CONDITION NOT A KILLER?

He was put in a coma WHY ?
WHO PUTS PEOPLE IN A COMA FOR BLEEDING IN THE BRAIN?
MIGHT THE PATIENT NOT HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN SERIOUS DIFFICULTY BY THE TIME HE GOT TO THE HOSPITAL?

WAS THIS PATIENT TRANSPORTED FROM THE CRANE TO QEH?
HOW LONG DID THEY HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE AMBULANCE BEFORE THE PATIENT WAS TRANSPORTED?
HOW LONG WAS THE TRANSIT TIME?

a basic, standard practice was forgotten: no “circulation stockings” were applied to his legs and hence the blood
clot was able to travel into the lungs, blocking the flow of blood to his heart and causing his heart to stop.

SO HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THE CLOT HAD NOT TRAVELLED TO LUNGS AND BRAIN AT THE ONSET OF SYMPTOMS OR DURING TRANSIT TO THE QEH?

SO THEN IT WOULD NOT MATTER IF “” a basic, standard practice was forgotten: no “circulation stockings” were applied to his legs” OR NOT ….CAUSEE THE HORSE WOULD HAVE LONG LEFT THE STABLE.

This neglect was overlooked by at least 10 different doctors and countless nurses.
IF THIS PATIENT HAD A MASSIVE PULMONARY EMBOLISM ALL THE KINGS HORSES AND ALL THE KINGS MEN WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HELP

The hospital has informed the family of Mel Harding, that they are not responsible for his death
WELL THIS MIGHT VERY WELL BE TRUE
and according to their quite unprofessional letter, they do not appear to have done any further investigation and are still not aware of their deadly mistake.
WHAT INVESTIGATIONS SHOULD BE DONE NOW ——YOU HAD AN AUTOPSY AND THE OPINION OF THREE SPECIALISTS

So one has to wonder: How many patients died like this before? And: How many more will have to die before they care?
I AM WONDERING WHY THIS EMOTIONAL RUBBISH IS POSTED HERE
    WHAT PURPOSE WILL THIS SERVE.

WHERE AS WE ARE SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS I ALSO KNOW THAT THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO THIS STORY
NOW WATCH THE BU ILLITERATI ATTACK ME NOW. WATCH

  10. I am wary of this type of submission since I have no way of knowing the whole story. Just as with the Elder Abuse submission, I would have to be convinced by more information than I have here.

Such cases are better understood in a court setting, where both sides present and explain medical EVIDENCE from professionals who may be cross-examined.

We know that such tragic mistakes do occur but it is difficult to understand what we can do here besides pushing our government to fix our injustice system, making it more available to those who believe they have grievances and desire justice.

So sorry for your loss! It appears that he will be missed by more than just yourselves.

  11. These types of issues are highlighted by BU for a simple reason- for many getting answers from the ‘system’ is difficult. Therefore this a case of commenting on a layman’s account from grieving relatives to determine right or wrong, it is about alerting the system using a public space there is an issue from a ‘customer’ which should be attended. Why should ordinary citizens have to enter a moribund court system to seek justice to deal with what should be a routine customers relations matter? During the early Covid 19 pandemic Barbados will recall Senior Consultant Dr. Maurice Waldrond resorted to the airwaves to challenge QEH about a ‘facilities’ matter.

Agree a matter like this cannot be resolved in this space, what is possible however is for management at the QEH be pushed to reach out to relatives of the deceased to try to resolve/bring closure. We wish the grieving family well in this regard.

  12. Great posts by GP and Donna.
The one point that sticks out for me is where the hospital said they were not responsible for his death. Was this a general statement or id it originate from the hospital lawyers. Hopefully, it was from the legal department and not someone speaking out of turn,

Firstly, condolences to the author and the family of the deceased.

So @David your intervention at 8:44 is interesting and quite a bit contradictory. Surely this is an awesome medium for getting answers from those entrenched in “the system” or those faced by intractable “systematic abuse” but just as surely ANY wrongful death claim under circumstances such as this where the patient entered the hospital in emergency circumstances under major duress MUST be very CAREFULLY reviewed for those answers!

**1. Any citizen whose family has the resources or contacts to engage “3 medical specialists to study all medical records” would not fall into the standard Bajan parlance of “ordinary citizens” IMHO!

**2. Unfortunately and alas this is EXACTLY the type of matter that has to go to the “moribund court system” for resolution. This is NOT a “facilities matter” brother and thus there is absolutely NO WAY to resolve the very technical and complex medical issues without expert point – counterpoint !

**3. So we can comment as layfolk till hells warms over but as noted by @Donna re that ‘Elder Abuse’ matter there are TOO MANY unknowns that we don’t know and TOO MANY knowns we DON”T KNOW we don’t know! You get the drift.

So though obviously true that “this cannot be resolved in this space” in should also be a truism that this is a very legally poised PRIVATE matter and it is very unlikely that any public pressure would cause the “management at the QEH [to] be pushed to reach out to relatives of the deceased to try to resolve/bring closure”. Their lawyers surely would not see it that way at this point!

Malpractice issues are NEVER simple; nor can they be prosecuted to resolution or closure in the court of public opinion!

  25. What this post and others like it (including the case of alleged elder abuse) highlight, is the clear lack of professionalism in Barbados. Relatives only resort to these type of tactics when totally frustrated by the unprofessional and often downright crass behavior of officials in these institutions at times like this.
People die in Hospital every damn day. It is ALWAYS traumatic.
What is insufferable however, is the blatant dishonesty, ass-covering lies, and disrespect that is shown by persons who should be professional, as they rush to cover their own petty asses.

It however should be no surprise that we get such shoddy service from institutions such as the QEH and from the various Ministries and public institutions….
Just look at the QUALITY of the shiite-hounds appointed to the various Boards. These positions are RESERVED for the minister’s minions and relatives, and party hacks…. rather than the most COMPETENT among us.
If the ‘heads’ are shiite, what can be expected of the organization’s?
How the Hell therefore, could BWA possibly be better? …or QEH? …or ANY shiite…?
Not with these mostly political lackies who are placed on these Boards as rewards for carrying the bags of the political class.
These ‘board members’ then use the positions to put OTHER political yard fowls into untouchable operational positions, and to negotiate various ‘benefits’ for themselves to supplement their stipends.

    What a shiite place….
No wonder we are scratching to borrow from Peter to pay back Paul, Suzanne, James, and the cockroach.
Next stage is where the cockroach takes possession of our ass(et)s……. when there are no more ‘Peters’ to pimp us.

Most people put into a coma don’t usually survive. Unless they want to claim his condition didn’t warrant being put into a coma or they missed administering expected drugs for his condition, it will be hard to conclusively determine what caused the blood clot that killed him.

There is no mention of his medical history so for all we know, he could have had clotting problems before or could have started getting blood clots after the COVID vaccine assuming he was jabbed.

This happens in the medical fraternity in every country unless there are requirements in place which they all make sure they are not to reduce the money hospitals have to payout.

Just look at this so called COVID pandemic and excess deaths in the US and first world countries with the better Healthcare systems versus the poor ones. The better the Healthcare, the more excess deaths there generally was. Was an investigation carried out to figure out why that was?

  41. Hmmm don’t know if previous convictions are admissable evidence in our courts, though. My knowledge extends only as far as Perry Mason, Matlock, LA Law and Rumpole of the Bailey. I must pay more attention to our court reports.

  42. My cousin died last year from the same thing. We did not shout, scream, hired specialists or write BU. The good Drs. at the QEH explained to her sister and partner what the diagnosis was, what could have caused it and the chances of her survival and what her life could be like if she survived. After two days in a coma she passed. She was already out when she went in and they did everything they could. My aunt, her mother, spent several months in the same hospital with diabetes. She had nothing but good to say about the doctors and nurses. Every story has too sides. My cousin was about to turn 54, but I may be wrong. People die every day all around the world. Even in so-called first world countries there is only so much they can do with aneurisms and blood clots if found early.

My mother had a blood clot in her lungs and spent several weeks in the hospital on her back until the doctors could dissolve it. The doctors had no medical records to follow as my mother had never been to a hospital, had no surgeries and was only treated for hypertension by her GP. She was in her mid-seventies then and died at 85 from what the coroner called natural causes. We all die, some sooner others later.

It seems you doth protests overly much on that front … it is the SAME almost EVERYWHERE else in the world: Govt affiliated Boards are always have lots of sycophants and too technical experts or sometimes the experts are also sycophants. This matter has nothing to do with that. Malpractice is about claims of negligent care which by its very nature is a claim of unprofessional conduct.

@David, I don’t see it as nitpicking or pedantic re ‘ordinary citizens’.

EVERY matter can be brought to public awareness but an issue such as this (at this juncture) is NOT one that benefits from such public viewing.

If the family of the deceased have engaged these experts and all of them are convinced of what is alleged above then this is a LEGAL matter and IMMEDIATELY should be sub judice.

If not then why throw shade for its sake… everyone and their sister know that medical professionals SAVE lives every day and because they are fallible they also expedite Bajans to their death on occasion.

When such cases are confirmed due to negligence – like that US nurse recently convicted and sentence to jail for an egregious fatal error – action MUST be taken in a REAL COURT not some public bashing!

One delayed payment is one too many, whether it be QEH, SOE or Central Government.

You seem to be implying she is that kind of person to reach out because she cares. I am questioning your judgement by asking if caring bosses pays themselves before all their staff are paid.

How old were your parents at the time of their deaths?

One of my many, many siblings died in one of your hospitals, one died in an American hospital, Neither was as old as either of their parents who died in Barbados. In fact one sibling who died from disease, not accident, in the richest country in the world was 29 years YOUNGER than dad who died in Barbados.

Our father died at 94+. His mother born in the 19th century died at 90+ I know this because I had long believed that she died at 80 until I went to the Archives and found the original 1879 registration with her birth. I doubt very much that ANY of her grandchildren will live to be 90. NONE have done so yet, although several are 80+, but 80 ain’t 90. I have long felt that “modern affluence killin’ we”. We ALL eat too much, drink too much. Smoke too much [various substances] We do not walk enough. We have become fat, soft and lazy. 90 year old grandma’s only transportation was her 2 feet. Note that diabetic me just ate half a brownie. I am sure that grandma never ate a brownie in her life. I know that I won’t make it to 90. Too lickerish.

I think that we ought to note that everybody in every country eventually dies.

Mortality rate 100% in Barbados, the USA, Canada, UK, everywhere.

Yes, keep in mind how the QEH is funded and or generate cash flow.
