Dear Fellow Citizens:

During my second year at Combermere School, a lunch-time game was organised by students, where one boy would chase the other boys in the class around the school. If he caught one, he would lash him once and that boy would join him in hunting the others. If they caught another boy, then both would lash him, and he would join in the hunt.

Eventually, there were only two boys left to be caught. I was the smallest and slowest boy in the class – because I was the youngest by up to 2 years. But I evaded capture by sharply changing direction when chased – a frustrating tactic for the chaser.

LAST BOY STANDING.

I was eventually caught, and my initiation into the hunter group resembled a gang beat-down. Those recently initiated now had an opportunity to be on the giving end – and they did not hold back. Once initiated, I had to join the hunt for the last boy.

Unlike me, he was genuinely fast. He should be rewarded for being the last boy on the run. But instead, he would receive the greatest punishment. He was inevitably caught. As the previous last person caught, I was to deliver the final lash as others held him.

He looked at me. A few minutes ago, we were on the same side. I gently touched his back, and I saw an expression – gratitude, something I was not given the opportunity to express when I was in that position.

THE WAY OF FAIRNESS.

Combermere is the way of fairness. Sometime during that game, I think that many of us understood that the game was unfair. But being caught up in the game, we unthinkingly acted our assigned roles. To my knowledge, that game was never played again during my time at Combermere School. That was 45 years ago.

Last week, I took an antibody test to see whether I unknowingly had COVID-19. The test was negative, so I am still on the run. I follow the sanitary protocols, and they have worked. However, I feel that I am not only being chased by COVIOD-19, but you, the Vaxxed.

OPEN PERSECUTION.

Twice in the past 4 months, I was denied work opportunities – I was told that it was because I was not vaccinated. As a senior Structural Engineer, I am fortunate to have options. But others in this unVaxxed group do not. I see others in this group being threatened with employment termination, having their freedoms restricted, and losing opportunities for career advancement. What gives you the right to do this?

Once you achieve your aim of 70% injected, are the remaining 30% to be permanently unemployed, or undesirable and untouchable outcasts? Have you thought this thing through?

The unVaxxed are now being accused of being unChristian for not getting the injection. They are being accused of not caring about Barbadian children who are too young to be vaccinated. How dare you? I mean HOW DARE YOU!

A TRUCE.

Last week, I wondered what would have happened if those who had not been caught, simply refused to play the game until the rules were changed. Why should those who are doing everything right, be punished for their success? But 45 years ago, we were hunted, scattered, and divided. Last week, I realised that we do not have to be.

I am asking for a truce – an end to: the hostile threats, the denying of work and employment opportunities, the discrimination, and the despicable accusations. I am calling for a truce.

The world is going crazy, and we have little influence on what other countries do. But we can discuss how we can exist together, during this pandemic, on this island we call our home. So far, the rules have been written by the Vaxxed and exclusively for the Vaxxed – is that fair?

SOLUTIONS BARBADOS.

So why should you listen to me? I think that I have some standing. Of the 9 political parties who contested the last General Election, Solutions Barbados got the third highest votes cast, at 5,842. To put that number in context, it represents over 5% of the total votes cast, which proportionally would represent approximately two seats in the House of Assembly on our first outing.

Solutions Barbados candidates generally spent less than 3% of what the BLP or DLP candidates spent. I spent about 2% of what the BLP candidate spent. Despite that, outside of the BLP and DLP, I received the most votes cast of any candidate from the other 7 parties.

LET US REASON TOGETHER.

So, on that basis, I am calling for a truce. Perhaps Mr David Ellis may moderate an honest discussion on how we can move forward united on this matter. To help you empathise, consider the following hypothetical situation.

Suppose the WHO claimed that a new variant made the Vaxxed a danger to society. Would you want the unVaxxed to treat you like how you are treating them? Would you want the unVaxxed to put you in isolation concentration camps? Would you want the unVaxxed to stop you from working, earning, playing, or going to school? Would you want the unVaxxed to take away your unVaxxed children because you were a potential danger to them?

THE RULES.

We are being deceived into treating each other as enemies. We are not. We are your fellow: classmates, workmates, congregants, family members, and citizens. We were recently on the same team where our common enemy was COVID-19. Now, more of you are behaving like hunters – and every week, I am feeling more like the hunted.

I am asking for an honest discussion of the rules. To facilitate this honesty, it should include what should happen if the Vaxxed are later found to be a danger to Barbados. That may seem like an unlikely nightmare scenario – but the unVaxxed are currently living your nightmare.

You are asking for the impossible. The vaccinated have marked their battle line, then trenched them, sunk rebar and poured concrete, all based on lies and half-truth. No logical discourse will stop them from mandating the jab upfront or by backdoor means.

The only true thing about vaccines is they greatly reduce the odds of severe illness for now. All other benefits we were told were either outright lies or clever PR half-truths. We were told, get vaxxed to stop the spread and get back to normal. Did that happen? Vaxxed still wearing masks, still capable of transmitting and still being isolated.

Stop asking for sensible debate Grenville, just shut-up and take your shot like a good little man or catch COVID and go Harrison’s Point where they want you to be a public figure pleading to the rest of the unvaxxed.

  2. I do not know any person who is anti-vaccine. But I know people who are hesitant because their valid concerns have been ignored – mine have been for the past 18 months.

It seems that once the vaccinated had their questions answered, they then decided that theirs should be the only questions to be answered. Clearly, that cannot be fair – but it is the current reality.

  4. @ “hostile threats, the denying of work and employment opportunities, the discrimination, and the despicable accusations.”

So exactly who is issuing hostile threats, denying you work or employment opportunities? Who is making despicable accusations? Family? Friends? Neighbors? Potential clients? Combermerians again?

From where I sit and interact I see none of this. Are you sure that you don’t have a persecution complex?

Although truthfully the unvaccinated can’t come into my home. My home. My rules. As has always been the case. I am the boss in here.

  5. No Covid cases yet in my natal village as far as I am aware. But this evening once the guys were home from work I spent more than half an hour over hearing their conversations

“188 cases, wow! I bet we will reach 200 soon.”

“I don’t want to be part of that 200.”

“My sister took the vaccine and I see that it didn’t do she nothing, so I decide to take my too.”

“The nurse touched my arm, and I asked her “you finished” I didn’t feel a thing.”

I heard no rancour, no coercion, no threats, no persecution, just a group of hard working young men having a very civil conversation.

N.B. Notwithstanding that there are 3 churches and only one rum shop, my natal village is not a very overtly “religious” place. BUT if the neighbor has 2 breadfruits they will give you one, they will tell you to help yourself from the mango trees etc. If they slaughter an animal they will provide you with some meat at a deep disocunt, ad maybe throw in some freebies. Will give you a lift to the bus-stop. But they are not churchy or preachy people.

  6. That GP is something isn’t he? He ended a schoolboy hazing ritual at Combermere all by his lonesome simply by displaying some kindness.

I read through his stream of consciousness and observe that he hasn’t taken the vaccine, but he doesn’t articulate why he has chosen not to take the jab, so I am led to conclude as Kareem Abdul Jabbar writes that he is among those who choose to be “voluntary ignorant”

Recently BU “David” wrote that David Ellis is unable to reach the “boys on the block”, I have news for BU “David” he won’t reach some who think that they are smarter than everyone, who flaunt their educational achievement and who believe their research skills are second to none but the only studies that they have any respect for are those that coincides with their beliefs.

  7. I don’t have any problem with anyone choosing to be vaccinated or not and I am quite happy and relaxed with my own unvaccinated status.

Will review my position next year.

Just keeping away from water in the Southern Corridor as per Minister of Health’s statement.

Sea bathing has been out for years with all the sewage knocking about so not missing anything.

The various protocols in effect for now require no real effort on my part, like falling off a log.

I have to admit though that as the cases/deaths continue to rise I just can’t help wondering why no one else has figured out the protocols are not working particularly well.

Sometimes I have to admit, I get fed up but hey, everybody gets to choose their paths through life, who am I to interfere!!

  8. Bajans heeding call to be vaccinated

BARBADIANS CONTINUE to heed the call to get vaccinated as one of the vaccination centres is reporting a fourfold increase over the past two weeks.
Senior health sister Juleyette Serrano said that at the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation building on Harbour Road, St Michael, they were up to 400 vaccinations a day on average from around 100 two weeks ago.
“We have definitely been seeing an increase in persons coming for a vaccine from last week or so. I don’t know if it’s due to the increased positive cases but there’s been a big jump,” she said.
At around 3 p.m. yesterday, Serrano said they had already conducted 273 vaccinations and expected a surge after work hours. She said the numbers tended to also swell in the morning.
As for the type of vaccine people were opting for, the senior health sister said Pfizer remained the overwhelming choice, with about 80 per cent of those vaccinated choosing that brand. She said people gave various reasons for the choice but the major reason was because people wanted to travel and Pfizer only needed four weeks between doses.
On September 18, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley had said she was counting on increased vaccination numbers in Barbados over the next month to determine how and when the current state of emergency will be reviewed and restrictions possibly lifted or pegged back soon.
She had said the country needed an additional 50 000 people vaccinated to be on a path to having
life returned close to what it was pre-2020, urging the country to aim for at least 10 000 vaccinations being performed per week.
By the end of the first week, although the country had passed the 100 000 mark of people who received both jabs, only 6 500 more were vaccinated despite the rollout of mobile units. (CA)

  9. Isolation strain

    Whole families turning up unannounced
    by MARIA BRADSHAW
    mariabradshaw@nationnews. com
WITH AN ALREADY high number of COVID-19-positive children at isolation facilities, health officials now have another problem on their hands.
Children who have not tested positive for the virus have also been turning up at the centres with their relatives, and this is putting additional pressure on authorities to find accommodation for them.
As a result, the Ministry of Health will be meeting with the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs today to come up with a solution to deal with this unexpected situation.
Minister of Health Jeffrey Bostic reported at a press conference yesterday evening that this occurred last weekend at the Blackman and Gollop isolation facility, where a female posted a video complaining about lack of beds and showing two people lying on the pavement.
    No prior notice
He said authorities at the Christ Church school had allocated the remaining eight bed spaces for COVID19-positive patients but an additional ten people turned up without prior notice.
Pointing out that he was appalled when he saw the video “because I know that that is not the normal service” at Blackman and Gollop, the minister said that after checking with authorities there and isolation facilities manager Dr Corey Forde, he was informed that when the bus turned up, “there were several more children accompanying than what we had planned for”.
“That obviously presented a problem for the facility because there were only eight beds available. I understand the difficulty some parents have, if they have to report for isolation and no one to keep children,” Bostic said, adding that this situation was prevalent at all of the facilities, including Harrison Point in St Lucy, but most of the time beds were available.
However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the posting of the video, adding the families were offered chairs for the children until management dealt with the situation.
“They determined that they were going to lie on the ground. It is regrettable that someone should violate the quarantine and isolation protocols, in relation to doing that kind of a broadcast to cast a dark shadow on the operations of the facility and the persons who are working there. When that sort of situation obtains, it really has a demoralising effect on members of the team,” he said.
“As a result of that and because of the large numbers of children accompanying positive cases at all of the isolation facilities, including Harrison Point, we are getting a challenge for bed space.
    Guidance
“We in the Ministry of Health and Wellness have made a determination that we must consult with the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs, to be able to get some assistance and some guidance from that ministry because they have expertise in dealing with children who accompany positive parents at the isolation facilities.”
    Bostic also announced
that Government would be moving with haste to institute the home isolation system to ease the financial and social pressure on the system given the increasing numbers.
“Several months ago we would have been planning for this moment. We had contingency plans for isolation but obviously things have now gotten worse . . . .
“The recent surge, especially over the last four or five days, really has put us under some tremendous pressure where we are challenged at the moment and we do not think that we can sustain the current operation that we are mounting, based on the use of institutionalised isolation facilities.”
Over the past four days, 699 more people have been diagnosed with COVID-19, leaving 1 062 people in isolation, based on Sunday’s numbers released by the ministry.
Without going into details, Bostic revealed there would be two types of home isolation but said private doctors and nurses had also been brought in to take some of the pressure off the health institutions.
“We decided to outsource those to private entities to be able to look after that for us,” he said.
“We are still responsible for those facilities but they would be dealt with by private doctors and nurses. We would work with them but we needed that sort of assistance to take the pressure off the public health care system.”

  10. Nicely put and excellent analogy provided from your schooldays.
Every time this argument is put forward it seems to be shouted down in the hysteria to coerce absolutely evrybody into being part of just one group.
Time will answer all of the questions and put to rest the vaccine debate. After that history will judge us all and I feel that judgement will be harsh for the actions of these times.

  11. More questions as Barbados isolation centres overflow
    Xxxxxxcccc

Dependents compounding space limitation problem at isolation centres
The increasing numbers at isolation facilities across the country are being compounded by accompanying minors who test negative for COVID, but are dependent on their infected relatives.
According to Minister of Health and Wellness Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic this is at the bottom of a “regrettable” video showing COVID-19 patients stretched out on the floor of the isolation facility at the Blackman and Gollop Primary School, with one person protesting the conditions there.
It is also why the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs is now being called in to assist with the care of children and others who find themselves in the unfortunate situation.
Nevertheless, Minister Bostic condemned the person behind the broadcast for violating isolation protocols and attempting to “cast a dark shadow” on the employees at isolation facilities.
“I want to stress that this is not the normal standard of service delivery at that institution or at any of our isolation facilities, and so it is regrettable what happened, but it was a matter that was out of our control at that time. But, I want to remind us all, we are in a pandemic,” Bostic said during a press conference on Monday evening.
“We are fighting a war against COVID and when you’re fighting a war, there are things that will not be perfectly instituted.
Those on the ground will have to make decisions based on what is happening at a particular point in time,” the minister added.
Adamant that the issues were more of a social nature than directly linked to public health, the Lieutenant Colonel revealed that as early as Tuesday he would be meeting with the relevant authorities.
“This is a meeting we are going to have tomorrow to see if we can come up with a plan to deal with that, because with the greatest will in the world, there is no way that we can anticipate how many people are going to be turning up at a facility that are not positive and this is really the reality that we were faced with a couple days ago,” he said.
The viral video, which made the rounds over the weekend, captured new admissions at the Staple Grove, Christ Church facility lying on the bare concrete floor. Numerous children were also seen in the video along with bags, presumably carrying the clients’ belongings and standing fans.
“We got to be lying down on the ground,” the upset female patient complained.
“If I don’t ask for chairs, look, this is what is happening. This is wa part we got to sleep, from since nine o’clock. You understand what I mean? This is not right,” she declared.
After consulting with Isolation Facilities Manager Dr Corey Forde, Minister Bostic revealed that with cases surging, public health officials have been balancing the daily admissions with patients being discharged and increasing accommodation capacity based on the numbers.
He explained that on the day in question, eight people were expected to arrive having tested positive for the virus. However, when they arrived, there were several children accompanying the patients who did not test positive for COVID-19 and were therefore not accounted for.
“So that obviously presented a problem for the facility because there were only eight beds available in anticipation that they were only eight cases,” Bostic explained.
“The families were approached and offered chairs for the children to sit on until the management of the facility was able to determine how to deal with that particular problem and they decided to lie on the ground and that is what we are seeing in the video.”
Bostic revealed that he felt badly about the video and the demoralising effect that it has been having on the hardworking public health workers.
“We are trying our very best to make sure that we do as best we can for everyone, but sometimes there are going to be challenges. Sometimes there are going to be delays in being able to process people. All of these things must be expected when you are in a war zone and we are in a COVID war zone,” the health minister concluded.

    Why are u so angry
What I posted is the truth I saw the video but did not post it because it was heart wrenching
Now instead of you responding with a sense of compassion for the people your comments expands on what is happening in other countries
Truth be told those countries have many medical facilities and have struggled to fight the virus
Now what happened in those countries should have been a lesson learned to these small.island countries in their preparedness to have facilities for families contracting the virus
Instead what we have are govt and their officials unprepared and fighting with social media commentators who dare expose govt mistreatment of families because of limited space at isolation centres
Govts were warned govts saw the devastation and limited spaces at hospitals in other international countries dealing with the virus
However ..However govt choose the deadly path of exposing the population on the virus
Now govt and people of your yardfowl ilk wants to strike back and point fingers at those who see a wrong and asking for swift and proper correction
Alright for Mia to go the UN and talk about wrongs when wrongs on a cause for humanitarian level needs to be corrected here in her homeland at isolation centres

The high death toll among the unvaccinated is starting to have an effect.

But some like the ISO Taliban will still not get vaccinated.

  17. I have a relative who went to Lodge in the era when new boys were caught and placed in the Coffin and borne around the school by a few bullies as a form of initiation,

My relative had a great aunt who routinely communed with the dead so the coffin did not bother him,

He himself could as Bajans say “see deads”.

But he decided instead of resisting he would tell the bullies stories of his trips to the moon and other far fetched places and of his experiences.

This utterly fascinated the bullies and earned him their respect, perhaps even fear!!

Every lunch time he would mount the steps and hold forth and his former persecutors would listen in rapt attention.

He never told me if they put him in the coffin or not, but probably not.

Another relative I had as a boy at St. Winifred’s used to be bullied and almost lost an eye.

He is a gregarious individual and had plenty of friends there so collectively they organised a “defense” where the bully could not get near without himself being under threat.

It helped that his cousin was nearly 6 foot at that age and heavily built so no more problems.

The point is a person is blessed with innate intelligence which normally allows him/her a way out of difficult situations.

I am sure there were some members of Grenville’s class who figured out ways and means of getting on with their own business during lunch.

I won’t tell you stories from HC as I realise they may further destabilise the many fragile psyches here on BU.

    Here’s what you do Grenville.

Seek out the hotspots in Barbados and link them to water distribution zones.

If you see the link, raise hell.

Your background as a CIVIL ENGINEER will tell you what is happening because you will understand the gravity fed water distribution system instinctively, long before any of the current politicians will,

You can earn serious political points with your brain!!

Imagine if you are able to solve the COVID problem in Barbados through your expertise.

You realise the same principles will solve it worldwide.

Use your innate intelligence and your contacts.

I suspect the solution is easy, once you use your common sense!!

  19. Grenville

You imagine a bunch of bullies are trying to make sensible people take a “vaccination” they know and admit was developed for the alpha strain against a different variant,

    …and worser,

Just because they have taken it themselves and are suddenly realising they may have been nothing more than lab rats and don’t know what the long term consequences might be they want sensible people to run and be foolish like them.

    Do your due diligence.

If you decide it is for you, take it, if you don’t wear your unvaccinated status proudly.

  23. Dear Grenville and John:

Why are pre-teen, and teen boys and men so violent and bullying? Why can’t they just leave others alone. Especially if those others are smaller, younger, weaker.

I went to mixed elementary schools, and at 10 to an all girls school and I don’t recall the sort of things you write about. Where were the leaders at these schools? My school principals. one male, two female were very much in charge and would not have permitted that sort of behavior. Furthermore at my secondary school corporal punishment was not used.

I don’t understand how adults paid to do a job could permit children to harm others.

  24. @GP September 28, 2021 8:17 AM “A WORSE FATE AWAITS YOU THAN ACCORDED TO NELSON.”

  25. We should avoid falling into the divisive trap of looking at our society as if it was divided into the vaxxed and the unvaxxed. It isn’t. The overwhelming majority of people I’m in contact with, whether vaxxed or unvaxxed, accept that the choice to be vaccinated is one for each individual. There are those, with evil intent, who are trying to push this divisiveness and its being taken up and spread by their lapdogs. But I don’t think most Bajans go along with it. Apart from a small handfull of divisive extremists, I think as Bajans we should all be able to unite on the right of each individual to choose whether they are vaccinated or not and to oppose any coercive measures to force individuals to be vaccinated against their will. Particularly with vaccines which are very much still in their experimental stages and for which there is literally no medium to long term safety data.

  26. It is clear that if you are vaccinated you are less likely to contract COVID or spread it. If you are vaccinated and contract COVID the results in most cases are minimal. In jurisdictions that have higher rates of vaccination have lower death rates. Many of those who oppose vaccinations are only here because they were vaccinated against childhood diseases. If you choose not to be vaccinated then you choose the results of your decision. In the case of Mr Phillips, it is employment, that is his choice. Barbados is like it or not dependent in a large part on tourism if a large segment of the population refuses to vaccinate, this will impact that. It is the choice of the government not to mandate vaccination for its employees or those in the tourism industry.

The problem is the small handful you speak of are in the decision making position.

They know they are in a war but they have not realized the tactics and weapons they are using are obsolete and not working but are pushing the same tactics. An analogy would be World War 1 with the Calvary charge fighting tactics against the first wide-scale use of machine guns.

Cases are spiking, have not leveled off yet and you are pursuing a vaccination everybody strategy doomed to failure as your primary solution. Reason being current vaccines take at least 6 weeks to reach maximum effect so even if we were able to vaccinate everyone today, we will not slow anything.

We need to try early treatment using known drugs other doctors and countries have been using with some success and stop waiting for the perfect study proving the perfect solution. We have nothing to lose and lives to save.

  29. The authour fails to tell us why he has chosen not to be vaccinated. I find it ludicrous that many of those opposed to vaccinations may very well be here because they received vaccinations for childhood diseases. The evidence is there, vaccinations work, they lessen the chances of being infected or passing that infection and lessen the effects if you do become infected. In some countries, government employees and those who work in federally governed employment occupations have been mandated to vaccinate or lose their jobs. Mia has decided not to do so, she is of course taking a chance that the population will do so voluntarily. I hope she is right because the tourist industry which is a large part of the economy depends upon removing COVID as much as possible from society. Just as Grenville has learnt if you choose not to be vaccinated then be prepared to accept the consequences, this can be applied to Barbados as a whole!

It is clear that if you are vaccinated you are less likely to contract COVID or spread it. If you are vaccinated and contract COVID the results in most cases are minimal.
    #####################

Can you please share links to the scientific studies which show that the vaccine impacts virus transmission and makes you less likely to contract covid or spread it? Are you aware that none of the clinical trials for the vaccines even attempted to measure their impact on virus transmission and scientists are only now trying to figure out what, if any, impact the vaccines have on virus transmission? The extract below is taken from the FDA’s FAQs on the Pfizer vaccine:

Q: If a person has received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, will the vaccine protect against transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from individuals who are infected despite vaccination?

A: Most vaccines that protect from viral illnesses also reduce transmission of the virus that causes the disease by those who are vaccinated. While it is hoped this will be the case, the scientific community does not yet know if the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine will reduce such transmission.

    https://www.fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-frequently-asked-questions

So maybe, it would be more accurate to say that at the moment scientists don’t yet know whether the vaccine will reduce transmission.

With regard to reducing the chances of developing severe symptoms from infection, this was tested for in the clinical trials and current studies appear to support it. However, this danger applies to around at maximum 15% of those infected. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus our protection on those in the at risk group, as has been normal practice for dealing with infectious respiratory diseases, rather than trying to vaccinate everybody and then threatening those who don’t want to comply?

  33. Get enuff vaccines on shore to vaccinate all
Then allow a period of time ( according to the rate of vaccinatiin) to pass
After that buy more body bags and open up the country
One way or the other We will reach herd immunity soon after

  35. @Tee White

The issue for many is that we live in times where individuals are aware more aware of their rights and reserve that right to exercise same. Oftentimes it is not about the process the vaccine went through because the average Joe is mostly ignorant.

  39. Vaccinated Michigan couple die minutes apart from COVID-19 while holding hands

A vaccinated Michigan couple died less than a minute apart Monday from a breakthrough case of COVID-19. The two were holding hands when they died.

Cal Dunham, 59, and Linda Dunham, 66, started to feel sick during a family camping trip earlier this month but assumed it was a cold. Their daughter, Sarah Dunham, said her father warned her that the couple was not feeling well. The couple was hospitalized and placed on ventilators a few days later, according to a local Fox station.

Doctors told Dunham on Sunday there was not much else they could do, and the couple would likely need to come off life-support the following day. When it came time to disconnect the couple on Monday, Cal was wheeled into Linda’s room, and the couple was reunited. Fox-17 reported that moments later, the couple held hands, and Cal died at 11:07 a.m. with Linda right behind him at 11:08 a.m.

“[My father] called me before our family camping trip and said he wasn’t feeling good, but he thinks it’s just like sinus, and [Linda] caught it, and she’s like, ‘He gave me his cold,’” Dunham told the local outlet. “The third day, they woke me up and said, ‘We’ve got to go because we don’t feel well.’ So I packed them all up, and they left.”

  40. I wonder, do they still teach statistics at primary school?

  41. Cuhdear BajanSeptember 28, 2021 8:47 AM

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Atleast the girls fight honourably!!

    https://www.nationnews.com/2015/05/14/awright-den-schoolgirl-fight/

  42. ON MONDAY NIGHT, I watched a video of two senior secondary schoolgirls fighting and though it was painful to watch, I was not at all shocked.

The video didn’t reveal what provoked the incident as it started while the girls were fighting. One girl pulverised the other, forcing the one receiving the blows to cover her head and face. It was clear that the girl on the ground had surrendered and was no longer interested in fighting. The other girl backed off and then decided to stamp and mash the girl across her body.

All this time numerous students were cheering on the girl who was doing the beating, telling her to “buss she head”. The girl lay motionless on the ground as another girl grabbed her by the hand and pulled her up into a seated position. At this point the crowd of students erupted in laughter at the girl who was beaten.

The other girl returned to continue the blows while the girl on the ground just sat and took the blows to the head.

A male voice could be heard telling the ‘aggressor’ to “beat she some more”. At this point the girl picked up what looked like a piece of PVC pipe and hit the other with it, which forced her to try to defend herself. A single male came and parted the girls.

Many thoughts and emotions ran through me as I watched and analysed the video. The cheering and expletives were indeed disappointing, but what was most disturbing was that not one single student saw it necessary to part the fight/beating or not allow it to start or restart. The students enjoyed what was going on and this reveals a growing problem within the psyche of our youth.

When I was at Foundation School, principal Major Hugh Barker had a rule that any student caught running to, instigating or encouraging a fight received the same punishment as those involved in it. I can’t say I know anyone who was a victim of that rule, but I made sure I wasn’t. Also, if my mother knew I ran to or encourageda fight or was involved in one at school, that would have been the end of me. It is my belief that all those students present should be equally punished with those involved in the fight.

Many secondary schools have a rule for dealing with fights that I do not agree with. Once there is a fight, generally all those involved are dealt with the same way, even if one was just defending oneself. Fights should be avoided but if people need to defend themselves, they shouldn’t be punished for it.

Some people may be surprised when I say this, but the behaviour displayed in the video is common in some schools and, as a result, many teachers aren’t shocked by this video. There are some teachers who deal with this type of behaviour daily and weekly. For those who are asking, it is my understanding that it isn’t the role of a teacher to part fights and many teachers are objecting to even attempting to part fights since some have been knocked out, had their clothing damaged, been seriously injured and even hit with a concrete block, all at their expense.

Regulation 23 of the Duties Of The Teacher, obtained from the Education Regulation 1982, states that a teacher in a public school shall, subject to the act and these regulations, (f) maintain proper order and discipline among the pupils under his care; and (h) assist in promoting the welfare and well-being of the pupils and fostering their social and moral development.

This should raise serious concerns for any parent. Who then is responsible for parting a fight? Is your child to be beaten until the fight stops? Honestly, some of the security guards at our schools look so shaky, untrained and unfit that I have little faith in their abilities.

Don’t believe the lies; all schools aren’t the same. I can tell you that there are some where this level of violence would not occur. I taught at a school for a full year and there wasn’t one report of theft, a fight or an altercation.

I’ll let you ponder which school that was.
