Things are so out of whack recently that I think we have gone haywire. Let me just toss a few random disjointed thoughts out there to get a real real feel for where we are right now.

  1. Persons on bail for vicious murders…BUT…end up committing others after
  2. Local parties and fetes are restricted…BUT…visitors can plan 2 months ahead of time and party soon with wild abandon
  3. Large outcry over the Trojan Riddim…BUT…and even larger outcry over the outcry over the Trojan Riddim
  4. MAM says take down the Riddim AND apologise…BUT…so far 166 thousand views, 3000 likes and Sunday School still wukking
  5. NUPW elected to represent workers…BUT….NUPW has to call in the police to save itself
  6. Minister boasts that cruise ships coming…BUT…positive cases still showing up on liners abroad
  7. We say the children under severe pressure…BUT…we force the same children to do Common Entrance
  8. Auditor General report speaks of problems…BUT…not a peep or pang from the GoB or BLP about it
  9. Cruise ships mashup Carlisle Bay coral…BUT…Minister says no problem he will plant it back
  10. Road tax removed to supposedly ease consumers….BUT……gas prices (and said tax) increasing every single month
  11. Hotel workers cannot be forced to take the vaccine…BUT…guests can demand that they do
  12. There is no price gouging they say…BUT…ask any supermarket buyer and you’ll hear different
  13. Four Seasons money written off by government…BUT…the main lawyer and main adviser running the same government coffers currently
  14. Verla’s ready to lead the DLP to next year’s election…BUT…she has to beat a certain Guy first.

    When the plant was SUPPOSEDLY FIXED under the DLP they had stop pumping into the swamp. for nearly 3 years now there is no indication that there is anymore problems at the plant why would they be still pumping into the swamp?

    Because you say so?

    Halliday is a DLP appointed man. Why is VERLA sitting on this news for 2.5yrs?

    BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, May 6, 2010 — A new environmental study sharply critical of the Government of Barbados shows the key Graeme Hall mangrove wetland is disappearing due to outside pollution and poor water quality.

    The Graeme Hall wetland is the last remaining mangrove in Barbados – a red mangrove forest that has existed for no less than 1,300 years. It is the only wetland in Barbados recognized internationally under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar). It acts as a Caribbean flyway stop for migratory birds between North and South America.

    The extensive 800-page study (www.graemehall.com/press/papers/Graeme Hall 043010 MEA.pdf) prepared for the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary by Environmental Engineering Consultants of Tampa, Florida shows the Sanctuary has suffered a 77 per cent reduction in salinity in the past ten years due to an inoperative government-run sluice gate. The huge reduction signals “an inevitable failure of the mangrove ecosystem” as freshwater flora and fauna take over.

    The study also cites damaging factors including: dumping of raw sewage into the wetland instead of the sea by the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant; contaminated storm water runoff originating from 1,150 acres of government-managed drainage systems; and, commercial and residential pollutants from adjoining properties.

    “The government owned and operated sluice gate failure confirms our worst fears,” said Stuart Heaslet, an official with Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. “It means that as the mangrove forest dies, it will not grow back because freshwater plants are taking over.”

    The original environmental investment was based on the area being protected as a brackish mangrove ecosystem.

    If you were to peruse BU’s archives, you would realize I have been consistent in my comments about the vendors that were relocated to Golden Square Temporary Market and those who legally remained on the environs of the old Fairchild Street Market.

    My involvement in the new market facility is from a personal perspective, because I have an investment interest in a stall that was located in the Golden Square Food Court.

    Besides angela cox, I’m the only other contributor who has been refuting the information she has been presenting to this forum about the new market. So, your June 22, 2021 8:58 AM contribution is an obvious reference to us.

    However, if you read my June 21, 2021 5:46 AM contribution, you would’ve noticed I told John2, “Let’s join the ‘investigative journalist’ in politicizing the issue,” before posting photographs of the abandoned stalls.

    If you believe that by otherwise highlighting the ‘shabby treatment’ of the vendors over the years, most of which coincidentally occurred under the previous administration, is engaging in a “family squabbles” or “peddling degrees of who has done worst,” then, that’s your prerogative, my friend.

    This is a govt issues that needs full transparency
    Govt needs to do an analysis to counter the 2010 report
    There is where u will find evidence which can give a full update as to what is happening with the swamp and conditions that are affecting animal and plant life

    My response to @ Donna was meant to be general in looking for truth from within the bowels of the DLP/ BLP
    In other words the trend has never been for any truth. And this is my major point. The trend or motives have always been : You doing um so we can do um too?
    Case in point: Whether than say that we have not totally solved the sewage issue on the West Coast. We say under the Dees the sewage was stinking up the road ( that is true) However to say that the sewage is now being transported out to the sea is also true.To say that the sewage problem has been solved is inaccurate.
    My argument is that no Bee or Dee wants anybody to say that after all the back and forth the damn problem is yet to be comprehensively fixed.
    Same debate with vendors. However it’s true to say that current (BLP) efforts to resolve the problem are commendable. You will never get a Dee to say that!
    And if the reverse were the same; you would never get a Bee to say that.
    That essentially was my position.
    And it stands because it’s the truth, Comrade.

He has convenient memory.I guess you see right through him like meAs you correctly stated this sewerage dumping at sea was going on for a long time.It was not a problem under the dems but it is a big issue under the bees bunch of hypocrites.Skinner speaks of duopoly but often when you mentioned something about the dems he is one of the first to speak of greenland etc.Then in another breath speaks about family squabble when he is just as guilty of doing the same.This from someone who was part of the so called or branded one man No Damn Party who saw many of them lose their deposits.Therefore it is clear to me that most bajans like the duopoly.They are unwilling to take a chance with a bunch of unknowns and mostly greenhorns.I gone.

    A few here suddenly became armchair enviromental engineers and marine biologists after the current goverment decide to construct the new outfall to correct the problem of leakage on the South coast .

    When the former goverment had SUPPOSEDLy corrected the problem and the same shit/effluent was supposedly going into the same sea there was no outcry from those that are now experts post 2018

    Second, I am not one who agrees with dumping any kind of waste in the ocean. It was obviously the best that could have been done at the time. Every idiot understands that.
    Furthermore it has been agreed that there are still problems to be fixed with the South Coast sewage system even the current administration admits them.
    Why does it have to be a BLP / DLP
    thing ? How can anyone deny that the DLP failed at attempts to stop shit from flowing in the streets. How can anyone deny that the BLP stopped the shit from flowing in the streets?
    All I am saying is that there are still problems to be solved. That is not saying that the BLP is responsible for the problem.
    I don’t care who is running the country, I don’t think any intelligent person will conclude that shit being dumped in the ocean is the final solution.

    So tell me in simple English: What the hell does the NDP has to do with screwing up Barbados?
    What legislation did the NDP pass ? Who made up the NDP cabinet? What economic or social polices were ever legislated and or implemented by the NDP?
    Please tell all on BU when the NDP government was elected to run Barbados.
    Just answer the questions or go and swim in the damn sewage just off the Accra beach.

    The above statement is what lead me at ask – what was/is the sewage problem that was not solved. The is no where in my question or any statement I ever made that that i believed or know that pumping sewage into the sea is a cure all for the south coast sewage.

    For all of you who think that tertiary treatment is the COMPREHENSIVE FIX for the south coast…

    As I stated a few years ago: Tertiary treatment is better than primary treatment and would be the prefered treatment method. BUT

    With the issues that caused the problems on the south coast …. the lack of maintenance and spare parts/ scavenging of parts from equipment to keep others working and eventually the total break down of essential equipment etc,
    which led to choke in the discharge/effluent/outfall piping etc etc.

    If you guys think that with a tertiary treatment plant the outcome of sewage in the streets, swamp and having to build a new outfall would have been different…then keep on fooling yourselves.

    Once the primary treatment is messed up then all the following stages (secondary and tertiary) will also be messed up. the remedial work would have still been the same but with the additions of rectifying the two addition processes.

    My concern and objective is to underscore the damage done to the swam
    For all and sundry the swam is a vital organism to all life once it becomes polluted it ceases to operate and maintain all source of life at its full potential
    Their are many positives advantages which the swamp have in maintaining a good quality of life it’s filtration system should not be use as a mechanism to help clean pollutants coming from systems such as waste treatment plants
    Govt when undertaking the building of the sewer plant in the area should have take into consideration the vital functions of the swamp and it’s preservation to human life
    Barbados is said to be a water starved country because of drought conditions yearly
    So how is it possible for govt to go ahead and literally destroyed one of natural source for water
    Mind boggling

    Barbados has all kinds of environmental issues which should be addressed
    The land fills which has already been filled
    Where is govt exploring long term solutions to get rid of the landfills that housed millions of tons of garbage and which can emits smells of poullants in the atmosphere
    Land fills all over the world are being closed and replaced with modern technology plants that can create an atmosphere for a healthy environment

    We have forgotten how many tons of garbage Barbados is said to produce daily, but we know that it is a huge amount for an island the relative small size of Barbados. No doubt the tonnage of our garbage will continue to increase given our reliance on tourism, large numbers of tourists equal more garbage. The high level of garbage produced has created a migraine headache for the former government. It created so much of a headache that one of most ignorant decisions made during the Arthur administration was to locate the Greenland Landfill in the Scotland District of Barbados. We can easily go further to say that the just halted Greenland Landfill is located on the most scenic part of the island. How could anyone in good conscience locate a dump which can be surveyed from the beautiful Farley Hill Park by Barbadians and tourists alike in that spot?. The news that the new government has discontinued the Greenland Landfill project has been positively received by Barbadians even if it will cost them 50 million dollars.

    Against the challenge of managing the rising garbage problem our energetic new government will have to engineer a solid waste policy in quick time. Reported in the news this week Barbadians were informed that the government will pursue a policy to use waste to generate energy. We welcome this approach which is not a novel idea and has been practiced by the developed world for many years. Garbage management is big money in the developed world. The requirement for Barbadians to separate garbage for pick-up and the retrofitting of the waste treatment system in Barbados will require significant resources from government and a behavioural change from Barbadians. We suspect that the project may require some level of privatization. It is not in our recollection that any concrete waste disposal plan was proposed when this current government was in opposition. We are optimistic that Prime Minister Thompson having made the bold decision to discontinue the construction of Greenland is aware of the void which remains regarding a waste disposal solution for Barbados.

    What is your opinion on Transport Board’s auction of 30 old units that were withdrawn from service?

    Saw the Nation News video. Also read comments from the viewers and was taken aback by the lack of knowledge of some people about these types of issues.

    One guy said the bus bodies could have been sent to Endless Electric and converted to electric buses, similarly to was was done with a Mercedes-Benz Busscar Urbannus bus, BM95, without taking the cost of the first project into consideration.

    This is a normal occurrence? The bodies have been sold in the past to plantations, business people and others to retrofit in order to satisfy various purposes. The blogmaster saw the bodies up close, nothing more than scrap.

    Meanwhile, general manager Fabian Wharton said there were 40 buses being auctioned yesterday because the Transport Board had no more use for them and most of them were without engines and transmissions.
    “They are basically shells and are over 20 years old,” he said.
    More than 30 people, mostly men, in the PSV sector and automotive and mechanic industry, attended the auction which got underway after 10:30 a.m.
    Most of the vehicles up for grabs were Mercedes, Marcopolo, Caio, Busscar, Hino and Sprinter.
    Haynes said the PSV owners were only interested in the latter two models as these made up most of their fleet.
    However, auctioneer George Edghill said the vehicles could be used for alternative purposes to transportation such as storage facilities or canteens.
    Henry Barrow, who bought three of the first four auctioned vehicles, said his daughter was working on a project but she could not attend the event and asked him to buy three buses for her. He spent about $1 100.
    Many of the vehicles were rusty and several parts were removed.
