Your message to the BLOGMASTER was sent

The Barbados government recently launched the Little Island Big Barbados campaign and immediately those responsible are having to defend against a torrent of criticism from the public. The thrust of the concern: the campaign is a tired concept several islands have used to promote tourism for which Barbados is whispered to have forked out $700,000.00.

In the blog BLP and DLP Cancer of Adversarial Politics the blogmaster raised concerns that are applicable in this case.

Yesterday the Reverend Guy Hewitt (also see: Is Guy Hewitt the Way, Truth and Light for the DLP?) was featured in the news in clarion voice calling for the resignation of Minister of Tourism Lisa Cummins. The good Reverend as spokesman for the DLP- our government in waiting- has the right to call for the resignation of Cummins. If we want to promote a culture of high performance built on meritocracy, when mistakes are made or persons perform poorly, there should be consequences. Although the facts of the matter have not been disclosed to the public – pending an internal investigation by Chairman of the BTMI Roseanne Myers – there is enough smoke to the story to suggest public concerns are valid given the large sum allegedly disbursed for the campaign.

Source: DLP St. Andrew Facebook Page

A takeaway from the imbroglio for the blogmaster is the use of the resignation tactic by politicians on both sides of the aisle. It was not too long ago the incumbent Attorney General (AG) Dale Marshall called for the resignation of then AG Adriel Brathwaite. There were calls for the resignation of Michael Carrington to resign as Speaker of the House Assembly the revelation he had to pass around a hat to collect donations to make good on a client’s monies owed. The blogmaster joined strident calls for Denis Lowe to resign after the Cahill Expose. Fast forward to the present there have been calls for Dale Marshall over concerns about crime, before that it was Wilfred Abrahams and the sordid practice by GIS staffers to emotionally and physically abuse detainees at the GIS, whomever is responsible for the fiasco at Barbados Revenue Authority re car registrations and the latest Lisa Cummins to step down or be fired. They all survived the job. No doubt when the dust is settled so too will Lisa Cummins, one of those Mottley has pencilled in on her succession plan.

A critical examination of the way recent governments have operated in Barbados is that firing has not been a go to option. The calls from political talking heads for opposite members to resign is all about generating froth to feed a perception of relevance in the eyes of a disengaged and unsophisticated electorate. One has to go back to Arthur’s obvious firing of George Payne and Elizabeth Thompson to find good examples of ministerial sackings. Some may offer that a reshuffle is a form of demotion given the pecking order of some ministries, it is not a firing.

In the climate of adversarial politics the DLP is doing what the system allows for a political party to seek traction and visibility in the eyes of the public. Especially two years out from a general election.

it takes a week to create a basic page, not more than 2 to customize a website.

there is the low intellect yardfowl again, i rarely go on FB now, got a whole publishing company to check for, ain’t got the time….most of the info i get comes to me from credible sources…since everybody is SICK and TIRED of DBLP they are TALKING OUT EVERYTHIGN….so how will some mediocre yardfowls and their masters stop that.

These are the exact words which I highlighted and copied that was quoted in the paper when Chatarani came out with an explanation
    Xxxxxx

He explained that the process began in 2018 in collaboration with brand consulting agency Brandor in collaboration with officials from the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTII), Invest Barbados, and the National Cruise Development

Xxxxx however in order for the Blp to remove the incompetence from govt officials they run around like headless chickens trying to blame me for the so called mistake

everything about them translate to low level…even a domain name.

“Domain names like .co and .com are for listing sites on the Worldwide Web, not social media channels. Hashtags – ‘#” before a name drive traffic to social media sites.

Among the younger domain names in the 28 years since the Worldwide Web began to enter general use, .co is used as a second-level domain in the Domain Name System (DNS) used to route internet traffic. Barbados is among a handful of countries to use ‘.co’ but would be used together with the country code – .co.bb”.

  11. Would suggest you copy, cut and paste instead of typing. Auto-correct and predictive text can make typing a sentence into a series of mistakes.

I took a look at the source you cite and it has Landor (correctly). However, you have successfully reduced your detractors to focusing on typographical errors.
    You go girl.

  12. Notice the white man’s language. He does not argue his case but instead he orders me to stop speaking my mind. Poor fool, you white dudes could not stop my eighteen year old mother in England in 1963. All alone in London with her big mouth! And yet you think you can silence me in 2021 on a blog!

    You delusional idiot!

I debunked your “elected a black man twice” nonsense this year already. But….

Obama was elected by less than half of the white vote. There was a serious backlash from Republicans. In fact, experts believe Trump’s election was part of the backlash.

During his tenure there was an increase in white supremacist right wing militias and death threats received were 4x that of other recent presidents.

And right there after the insurrection a black police officer fell to his knees and cried, his sense of self battered and bruised by the brutal barrage of deliberately dehumanising “n” words used like cudgels by the right wing mob.

Now… you may take up your argument with Christopher Wray the Republican Director of the FBI.

I am sleep deprived and in no mood for your stupidity.

    Piss off!

Ok before I am accused if spreading fake news
Let me get the facts right concerning the name of the consultant agency

    Xxxxxxxx
    Straight from the horses mouth

He explained that the process began in 2018 in collaboration with brand consulting agency Brandor in collaboration with officials from the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTII), Invest Barbados, and the National Cruise Development Commission.
    Xccccccccccc
What would be of interest and for the better interest of the country and people if u spoke towards accountability being open and transparent giving more details about this Brandor consulting agency location and cost
Many would have sympathize with Lisa if the truth was being told
Instead in today’s paper a henchman made entry to give barbadians a bundle of crap wrapped in gift paper expecting that the crap would suffice and quell the wagging tongues most of whom has lost respect for this govt

The above comment shows almost time date and day copied the Chatarani comments from the news paper in reference to him giving the name of the consulting agency and placed on BU
    Xxxxxx
Theo your point in referencing that it could have been a typo does not hold true since the letter L and B are separated by six letters and are on different levels on the key board

I hold fast that Chatarani in his haste to defend the indefensible did not get his facts right
and yes there is a consulting agency by the name of Brandor
Since Chatarani was so gong hoo to step up to bat
The question which he should be asked is why did he step over the crease
A sure way of showing how green and amateur a batsman he is

  21. Chatarani was the problem he opened his mouth too fast fell fast asleep at the crease and missed the ball
What is truly amazing is that this issue grew more legs as another series of “mistakes” collides with truth and fact
Now Brandor whose name was first mentioned in the newspaper can demand an apology from Chatarani and the newspaper
People name and reputation bandied about by self serving govt officials should come with a harsh repercussions
    Seriously

  22. The question which he should be asked is why did he step over the crease
A sure way of showing how green and amateur a batsman he is

    Gone or going where?

Unlike some people on this blog I don’t manufacture data [also know as telling lies] in order to prove my points.

It is a common but erroneous belief that African descended people in the USA are better off than African descended people in Barbados. Sadly for African Americans the data says otherwise.

My own sibling who moved to the USA in his youth, had a life that was 29 YEARS shorter than that of our father, and 20 YEARS shorter than that of our mother. ALL of his many siblings [except for one who is not yet his age] have so far outlived him.

    FACTS.

  27. Cuhdear Bajan Avatar

Black Americans are infected with COVID-19 at nearly three times the rate of white Americans, according to a new document from the National Urban League. The report, based on data from Johns Hopkins University, also shows black Americans are TWICE AS LIKELY TO DIE from the virus. According to the “State of Black America,” THE INFECTION RATE FOR BLACKS is 62 per 10,000, compared with 23 per 10,000 for whites.

The infection rate for Bajans is 13 per 10,000.

Please do not try to deceive the blog by pretending that all is well in black America. Black Americans still suffer from the poison of white racism. Black Americans are in fact less well off than black Bajans.

That is the TRUTH. Not a figment of my imagination.

Yes, “the work permit system IS a joke.” And, based on what has been occurring at Sandy Lane, which seems have become the normal practice, apparently there isn’t any limit on the amount of work permits granted to any establishment.
Also, to make matters worse, ‘every and any’ business is applying for work permits to recruit non-nationals for jobs such as baby sitters, live-in maids, kindergarten teachers and teachers for private schools.

They also ‘get away with murder’ by creating job titles and demanding outrageous qualifications for them. A few years ago, Sandy Lane advertised for an Engineer that must be able to speak Spanish fluently, after having a Puerto Rican working in the job for several months without a work permit.

Take Sandals Resorts for example. Their managers are predominantly Jamaican, who are also entitled to tax free concessions as well.
I remember when Princess Resorts owned Royal Pavillion and Glitter Bay Hotels, they recruited a white American Chef for Glitter Bay. He had the luxury of a company vehicle and so too his wife who was not an employee.
At Royal Pavillion, they made the post of Maintenance Manager redundant, ‘paid out’ the Black man who held that position, and applied for a work permit to bring in a white non-national for the same job, under the title of Chief Engineer.

A friend of mine was the Executive Chef at a then St. James Beach Hotels owned property. They brought in a white foreigner as Group Executive Chef/Trainer to be the ‘boss’ of all the hotels’ chefs.

I believe Immigration should launch an investigation into Sandy Lane to find out why they always seem unable to receive suitable applications for ALL management positions, except for Chief of Security, who is usually a retired police officer or a police officer who resigned from RBPF to ‘take up the job.’

I’m always reminded of calypsonian David Hunte’s 1980s Crop Over Semi-finals song, “is there no Bajan that can manage a hotel efficiently, they had to bring a man from Germany.”

    TOURISM REBOOT
Panel to come up with new Bajan brand slogan
    By Carol Martindale
    carolmartindale@nationnews.com
Barbados’ tourism sector is about to get a reboot.
After a swell of criticism and public outrage over the controversial proposed tourism slogan, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley yesterday announced that a team of Bajans on a new committee, Destination Barbados Reboot Panel, would be working on a new tourism approach and slogan to sell this country to the world.
She also confirmed that the proposed slogan Little Island, Big Barbados has been dropped.
In an exclusive interview, Mottley said any new slogan must reflect the uniqueness of this country and capture and embody “who we are” as Barbadians.
She announced the committee that will include Sir Hilary Beckles, The Most Honourable Anthony Mighty Gabby Carter, Stedson Red Plastic Bag Wiltshire, along with hoteliers, hotel workers, musicians, water sports operators, beach vendors, taximen and others, has been tasked with brainstorming and coming up with a new tag line.
Mottley credited Minister of Tourism Senator Lisa Cummins with what she described as a new bold proposal, which was endorsed by the Cabinet.
“She has said to me and Cabinet that we must go Bajan. She has proposed that how we are viewed and what we say to the rest of the world to get them to come here must be rooted in a clear understanding and expression of who we are. And, that it must be an authentic and we must trust ourselves, especially in this year when we seek to become a republic.”
    Barbados’ uniqueness
“She said that over the course of the next two weeks the committee members will meet to reflect on who we are, what is unique about us, why is that we have had consistently the highest repeat factor
of visitors, what is special about who we are, and then to reflect that in a couple statements which can be then taken by the public relations and marketing people and they will go local with that, and then at the end of the exercise, to focus-group them with the international market who must understand what we are selling,” she said.
“The local company may find linkages with the international market, but fundamentally we believe that our public relations needs to be anchored first by Barbadian reflection, thought and expression and then we can look to work with whoever we need to work with. We need Barbadians at the centre of that discussion” she said, adding that while Cummins asked for two weeks, she suggested four.
Mottley said that, as Prime Minister, she accepted responsibility for what happens across the Government “and I do so willingly”.
While expressing satisfaction that former chairman of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. [Sunil Chatrani] addressed the issue last week and explained that what transpired [with the proposed slogan] could not be put at the feet of either Cummins or the current chairman Roseanne Myers, she said there was wisdom in listening to the people of this country when they speak on matters.
“We are trusting ourselves. We will trust our own to be able to tell that story. And I suspect that is what the public wants. That is what I am hearing from the public and I believe that is what she has heard from the public and that is why I salute her to come with this programme and to allow us now to settle what is the core message we want to say to the world . . . telling our story to get them to come here.”
The Prime Minister said she hoped the process would be completed by August.
“So let us use this time to get it right and right this time. Much of what we have done in the past has not necessarily been reflective of who we are.
“We sell product in many instances as if it could be sold any other part of the world,” she said.
Mottley also refuted reports that the international company Landor was paid $750 000 for “four words”.
She said the company was paid $500 000, noting this amount covered other things including camera footage.
The Prime Minister said it was unfortunate that some people, especially in the opposition, would be calling for “a head”

whenever there was an issue in the country.
“I said last Sunday night, I don’t wear boxing gloves.
I am wearing construction gloves. What this country faces is so huge a challenge, that I really would welcome them putting on some construction gloves with me and putting some ideas on the table that are constructive.
“Because on every count, their calls for resignation are unjustified in my view.
I continue to have full and complete confidence in the Minister of Tourism,” she said.

  35. Chatarani is not a “highly paid government official” as she is suggesting. He WAS chairman on the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., a job for which he was paid about $1,500 per month.

I’m trying to understand how a former chairman explaining a situation that occurred ‘under his watch,’ making a mistake with the name of a company, means he’s a “duffus” and the ‘government’ incompetent.

On May 29, 2021 2:04 PM the “lead spin bowler” ‘wrote’ “Even Chataranil couldn’t get the name of the INSULTING agency correct.”

Following her logic, should we assume she and the DLP are ‘incompetent dufuses’ simply because she mistakenly called the man ‘Chataranil’ instead of ‘Chatarani’…….. or used the word INSULTING instead of CONSULTING?

We’ve descended into the realm of absurdity with this silly argument.

  36. WURA-War-on-U,
Cuddear has always been a good yarn spinner.

There are more fundamental issues to discuss. Did you see David’s posting: “Tourism Reboot” written by Carol Martindale? What a ting! The Barbados government has become the theatre of comedy.

Our UK pal is probably consuming his cereal with a chuckle on his face wording the phrase “I told you so; but you was too hard ears to listen”

  37. I thought it was a good reboot.
She admitted there was an issue and is now seeking a local solution. A national competition could be made a part of the solution.

    But twopoints
The fact that it was $0.5 M does not make the exorbitant sum paid any more acceptable.

Now that Mia has done an about face, those who were defending the situation should do the same. The Rapid Response Team. (RRT) needs to think issues through.

  39. Questions.

Why is Lisa Cummins still the minister of tourism? Who will be held accountable for the $750K snafu?

Is the formation of a new committee the solution to every problem?

  40. I am all for having greater participation, that is why having a competition at a national level could or should be a part of the solution.

Turning everything over to ‘five-year olds’ cannot be a solution to anything or everything.

  41. @Dullard

You are up early this morning?

Lisa Cummins is still MoT because PM Mottley has accept responsibility and as you know ministers in Cabinet serve at the please of the PM.

On the 750K the PM corrected to say it was $500k.

The public was generous with feedback to say a homegrown process/decision was better than contracting foreign agency.

Finally, can you point to an occasion in recent memory a minister was fired read held accountable?

  44. Mia address the issue
My question to Mia would the taxpayers of Barbados be refunded the cost of a slogan that was not of any benefit to the country
Also how much money would the taxpayers have to forked up for these new bunch of bobbled heads some of whom already received plenty out of the treasury
Nice to hear that the issue was address but addressing the issue which includes another committee serves little purpose in addressing the bottom line which is cost

    lillte Barbados lost in transition

  45. It seems that Mia takes an unfortunate opportunity to find work for her friend
The whole thing committee suggestion stinks the house up
When all it takes is govt having a prize award of less than what the committee would be paid to find a person on this 166sq miles to place Barbados name on the spotlight
All Mottley had to do was take a page out of the govt of the day whose efforts was a homegrown style in the making of the Barbados Flag and the rest is history
