Demand for travel determines the servicing of routes by airlines.

The pandemic has triggered economic hardship worldwide, failures and or downsizing of some airlines, and in the absence of a definitive end to the effects of the pandemic, an on-going contraction in the demand for travel. This is bad news for Barbados whose economy is tourist dependent.

Whilst the country is in a wait and see position, it might well be beneficial if it looks at establishing a connection with Western Africa via air travel. As the most easterly Caribbean country, Barbados is nearest to West Africa, 6,406 km from Ghana and 7,431 km from Nigeria. There are seventeen (17) West African countries of which Nigeria and Ghana have a population of 100 million and 30 million respectively. Ghana is defined as a third world country but with the world fastest growing economy in 2019 and Nigeria, a rich 4th world country. Both Ghana and Nigeria have controlled the spread of Covid-19 and could be the main routes.

Demand for travel between Barbados and Ghana and Nigeria would have to be assessed by the Government of Barbados. In the absence of information, Barbados could benefit from promoting its educational institutions from primary to tertiary level. Parents who can afford tuition plus boarding and all the incidental costs might for a variety of reasons, prefer their children being schooled outside of the country. It might also be possible for Chefette to expand into West Africa. How Barbados can benefit from other aspects of oil rich Nigeria and agricultural based Ghana will also require research.

This suggestion is not new; both Jamaica and Guyana tooted flights to Africa but they failed to materialize. However, the present economic climate might just be right to follow through with these West African airline routes. Though flying to Barbados, most of Virgin Atlantic airplanes have been grounded by the pandemic. Dire warnings about the continued spread of Covid-19 in the USA, UK and even Europe do not indicate this airline will return to full flight in the short term. With assets grounded and the airline bleeding money, Sir Branson might well be receptive to a route from Barbados to West African countries. His planes would be back in the air earning money. There’s no direct competition. Ticket prices can be relatively cheap because the airline would be flying to an oil rich country, Nigeria. However, the viability of each route is incumbent on Barbados justifying demand.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the former slaves in the Caribbean reverse the slave triangle to carve out trade between West Africa and the Caribbean and even North and South America.

This challenge is not outside the Prime Minister of Barbados’ orbit. The PM has resource people who can pull together a comprehensive Business Proposal. Her several interviews at the international level has raised her profile which should lead to contact and persuasion of the key international asset providers, Sir Branson or the alternative British Airways and though not discussed herein, the governments of Ghana and Nigeria.

This is not a start-up business where projected minimum start-up capital would be around $22 million in the first year as per a Business Plan done for a proposed new airline in 2010. The airport hubs, planes, personnel, etc., already exists. It would be interesting to know the flaw(s) in my idea.

  1. Is it me or is something missing in that Mia narrative…shouldn’t all this linking to Africa INCLUDE….taking down completely the slave society Barbados, instituting basic human rights for African Barbadians, including their unalienable right to their OWN MONEY AND LANDS…..AND OPPORTUNITIES that their existence generates…..INCLUDING…access to their REAL ANCESTRY AFRICAN HISTORY and not only random bullshit books written and rewritten by Barbados’ historians on the enslavement of their ancestors…….African lives DID NOT BEGIN WITH ENSLAVEMENT….there are literally millions of books, literature, etch that highlights AFRICAN HISTORY…which black people in Barbados are entitled to have access to , it’s available on many forums, i access that info EVERY DAY…EVERY DAY…

who gives a shite about slave country Morocco…they have nothing to offer Black people in Barbados…

A good analysis would be to look at the Indian population that came here centuries after the Black Barbadians and compare their economic growth with ours.
Let us look at the size of their community and compare it with ours, in terms of pure wealth accumulation. We would then see where the real argument about time lies.
It is interesting that in a Black majority country , the whites and Indians can control commanding commercial activity and the dominant Black majority is still struggling economically.
This is the discussion that will bury the myths as to what has transpired in this country.
Kindly show me the whites and Indians holding placards begging for national insurance and severance pay. Show me the white and Indian workers being laid off without benefits.
Let’s have a real no holes barred discussion about the realities confronting our country and expose the sheer exploitation of the Black majority by all and sundry.
And while we are at it, show me any white or Indian parent, in the papers lamenting that their child don’t have a tablet to go online to be taught at this time.
    “Things get curiouser and curiouser.”
    Peace

  3. “Let’s have a real no holes barred discussion about the realities confronting our country and expose the sheer exploitation of the Black majority by all and sundry.’

The populi should demand of Mia to explicate on WHY this is still happening, why are Black human rights NOT BEING OBSERVED and APPLIED, why are their money, land and opportunities ALWAYS BEING STOLEN……by eveyone…..WHY, WHY, WHY.

  4. If one of them does not have what you want, he tells you to hold on and sends somebody to another Indian store. They bring it back and sell it as theirs.

I have a cousin who does that. When she has no eggs she goes to another black woman up the road from me, and gets them and DELIVERS them at the same price to keep the customer. They have an understanding. She has thrived. Nobody even saw it coming.

I know farmers who would never do that. Some steal crops from each other and try to juck out each other’s eyes. But the St. George Co-operative farmers work well together and are thriving.

More co-operation between us would have overcome most of the obstacles.

I think we are becoming more inclined to do that. I see many younger people willing to pool their resources.

It takes time for damaged psyches to heal. That is what I meant.

  5. @William

For a big man you posit some facil positions. As Donna stated the minorities forgo the social life to focus on pooling and maximizing resources. They embed their children in their businesses to give them the opportunity to learn the operations from cradle to grave. You can do better!

Importantly they are generous with gifts to you know who. So who to blame?

  6. Mia needs to start taking all of this more seriously and stop acting as though we are her enemies, things have to change in Barbados or not even she will be able to move forward without daily controversy…..she needs to take the various advice in the spirit in which it’s being given.

don’t know how and why a majority black country WITH BLACK LEADERS is still carrying so many remnants of colonialism, slavery, slave codes, descendants of slave patrol practicing racism and robbery of the Black population in 2020……IT’S NOT NORMAL, never will be and i refuse to allow anyone to convince me that it is…how can that make any sense to Black people is beyond mindboggling.

  7. “A good analysis would be to look at the Indian population that came here centuries after the Black Barbadians and compare their economic growth with ours.”

Indians set up small businesses like shops so they can be independent and be their own boss to avoid working for prejudiced people to be exploited used and abused. Barbados could use a similar mindset to avoid depending on trade opportunities to come from west.

Like you have oft’ stated , I am an old cogger , whatever that is, Just allow me to write what I want to and I always do do respectfully. You have one view of the Black economic question.
I have certain ideological and philosophical positions on race in Barbados . I understand and respect everybody’s opinion. What I can tell you is that if we had Black progressive leaders for the last 54 years ,we would not be here having the same conversation that I was having for over fifty five years. The truth is this : For a majority race in this country , we are still sucking salt.It was the same thing fifty years ago. Now , you can go and put the perfume on the pig, dress it in the finest and it may stand up on two legs and walk the same way it did in Animal Farm.I sincerely hope you get your fair share of apples and don’t end up like Boxer.

    Peace

  9. @ William

Your observation is right, of course. The great consumers in Barbados are black people. No retail business can continue to exist without the support of black people.
I remember back in the 1960s when a manager at Abed’s, the Lebanese, insulted a black shopper and crowds of people descended on Swan Street to close down the business.
Fast forward to 2020 and the Abeds are the pillar of the business establishment and one even got angry when neither of the two leading parties selected him to be a parliamentary candidate.
Bajans have very, very short memories. Remember, James A. Tudor worked hard, established a sound business, and sent his son to Harrison College and Oxbridge. What about the five and ten Model store; Layne at the Civic; Acme, Atwell, Gertz, I can go on?
James A Tudor’s problem, like many other successful black-owned businesses, was one of inheritance, the younger generation’s dislike for the family business. The Indians are not like that. The family-owned business is the foundation of their success. Look at the Goddards.
We have the same problem in the UK. Caribbean people love Chinese food and are the biggest single customers, but you will never see a Chinese person in a black-owned business, not even a hair cut. It still has not registered.
It is also ignorance of black Barbadian culture to talk about the lack of pooling resources. This was the common cultural practice until post-independence when all young people, under Barrow’s free education project, thought they were too well educated to do silly things like pooling. What do you call meetings, or sou-sous if not pooling?
Again, we also had this in the UK until the birth of polytechnics and the mass graduation of young black people, then they decided they had degrees and could not do the same jobs or join the same organisations as their parents. Educated fools.
@William We are not even good consumers. We just do not know how to spend our money. Barbados is a statistics-free zone, but I will bet that during the CoVid period many, if not most, households have run up more debt than they did previously. This is who we are. In the UK, households saved £100bn over the last ten months.
I have just come back from taking my car to an Italian owned garage, nothing wrong with that. It becomes a symbol of regression when you realise that in the 1960s and 70s there was an over-supply of black car mechanics, many of them Barbadians. The surprise now is how few there are.
The price for this lack of progress is what I call the Nig–r tax. We must pay a price. But it comes from the top, from the failure of government, BLP and DLP, to develop a vision for the nation, apart from the fallacy of being world class.
@William, I will end with this. Pay careful attention to the language of politics. If you discuss politics in the perverse language of patriotism and nationalism and of the flag and national anthem, then you fool ordinary working people that they have something in common with the rich and well connected.
However, if you discuss national politics in terms of wealth, inheritance and privilege, then the outcomes are predictably different. There is a reason why Barbadian politicians, BLP and DLP, do not talk the language of equality and class.
They may be stupid, but they know what they are doing.

  10. I watching how the crocodiles in Caricom turning on each other
Then they are those here speaking about bonding with Africa to achieve financial gain
Good thought but a very long shot
Liat is now becoming the dividing line between Antigua Barbados and St. Vincent
Think of the many years and the leaders who have spent time and resources effortlessly to bring these small island nations together under a banner of similar ideologies and philosophies
Presently pattern of division has started to raise the ugly heads
Those that would serve purpose to create suspicion hatred between neighbours
    Does anyone really cate

If you want to buy some Black Nationalist flags to wave around, you can buy them from Chinese shops.
You never grew up in UK and your mind is as closed as can be.

  12. William Skinner Avatar

    @ Hal
Points taken. What we have now is sensible Blacknpeople either creating myths or buying into perverse nonsense in order to defend the corruption within politics, race, class and wealth in our country.
It more than boggles the mind because it is almost embarrassing , that in 2020, we are looking for the most microscopic reasons to defend the corruption that is rampant.
You have black Barbadian workers being told by a Prime Minister to behave themselves and don’t offend “outsiders “ and don’t cry out when employers rob you of your severance payments and NIS contributions. This must be a very sick joke.
There is no hope for future generations if we don’t have frank and sometimes furious discussions about race , wealth , land reform etc. We owe it to our children to stop this romanticism of perverse exploitation of our people and get very serious. I think that’s the point that @ WURA makes and it is the progressive thing to do.
    Peace

  13. @ William

The way forward is to go out in the community and hold workshops, seminars, offer free lessons to working people in English, maths, Barbadian history, civics.
Set up advice centres to offer people advice on work place problems, on managing their money, drafting letters for them, reading for those who cannot, etc. Make yourselves a constant presence in the communities and build that trust.
In the late 1960s, we had an organisation, The Black Regional Action Movement, in which the theorist was CLR James wife, Selma, a very solid woman.
So while we raised issues that affected us, she was there to put them in a wider theoretical context. Community activism cannot never be underplayed.

  14. “You have black Barbadian workers being told by a Prime Minister to behave themselves and don’t offend “outsiders “ and don’t cry out when employers rob you of your severance payments and NIS contributions. This must be a very sick joke.”

even more repugnant she’s demanding that they don’t cry out or complain when they and their children are hungry and they can’t pay their bills while hers and all they thieves gluttonus guts are filled from robbing black people….that is definitely a WTF….

how does that make sense to her as a black woman…is beyond a mystery…..so those who rob black people must be given first preference at BEING THIEVES, being wealthy having all their basic and luxurious needs taken care at the people’s expense….. while Black people go hungry….and some are actually accepting of this PURE GODDAMN EVIL against our people in 202

…as i said, i have seen wild animals on National Geographic display more of a social and moral conscience toward their own kind than i see coming from the blacks in the haunted house in Barbados toward Black people…who are their own kind…even beasts would be ashamed of their vicious pedigree attitudes..

From a base political position, I hope the third parties are reading your post. You and I were influenced by the radical thinkers of the 60s and 70s. I don’t think we ever passed the baton. The new progressives are in the embrace of the BLPDLP.
We used to be Little England now it is heading toward Little Brooklyn.
We used to talk about cultural penetration and it now looks like cultural decimation.

  16. How did we get here
Trace uh roots of our economic social environment in the sixties which had the potential of building self empowerment and ask or see who were the most adamant in breaking that economic power which took barbados on a one way track path of creating wealth for the few while leadership stampede like loyal foot soldiers begging for help at the USA door steps
How is it that other small islands can trade their goods in USA markets and barbados after lol many years cant

  17. “How is it that other small islands can trade their goods in USA markets and barbados after lol many years cant.”

    Are you sure?

I know ‘Aunt May’ products, for example, are sold in the USA.

  18. It is interesting to listen to Barbadians who ran/left Barbados telling Barbadians on the rock what are our problems chapter and verse. Some living in the USA where a White man can plant his knee on a black man’s neck for almost 9 minutes with his hands in his pockets in the 21st century. Some living in the UK where Blacks have dropped below all other minorities…

  19. William..we did recently watch a video where that dirty demon enoch powell just wanted death for Black people in UK..

How many times have we said this same thing on here, from they pledge allegiance to Elizabeth, they become representatives of dead slave masters, caricatures of the evil forced on our ancestors, but ya can’t tell titled idiots that, they believe they’ve arrived and cannot remove themselves from what they were created to be…..don’t care how ya beat this into black heads, unless you have an extremely HIGH LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS it will never stay, and most black leaders lack that necessity….It’s particularly bad in Nigeria where they think they’re better than other Africans, sounds familiar, better than Caribbena people and are only rudely awakened when they travel to Europe etc and are treated just like the slaves that they look down on others as having been, only then they realize how they’re perceived..

Someone ought to tell Professor Reparations that writing book upon book about slavery has it’s place, has now evolved into being views as continuing the indoctrination of the bajan mind to believe that’s all they were and will ever be, but this is an era where much more is required, since our African ancestors have a much more glorious history outside the numerous centuries of enslavement and this is what new generations in Barbados need to read about and reconcile themselves with…
    ..
“Africans have a very serious problem arising from the fact that they have been de-culturalised. Today the African [leader] is a pale reflection of the white man,” he says. “That has been our problem and that’s the problem in all the African countries today. [Africans] have not rediscovered themselves. No matter what kind of leader we have, the fact that he has lost his cultural background means that he has to be a surrogate.”

This cultural restoration is what will enable the African nations to prosper, according to Sagay. “In as much as Western culture is dominant in [Nigeria], we can only progress [not] develop,” he says. “Because the foundations on which we are supposed to develop is [the] white man’s structure. All our orientation is to catch up with the white man – and we cannot because by the time we move two steps, the white man will have moved 10 steps ahead. So, we are in a position of [constantly] wanting to catch up.”

Using linguistics as an analogy for Africa’s structural problems, Sagay argues that Africans are “talking to the white man in his own language and you can never speak the language better than him, because you are a student. He who is a master is always the leader [and] he can always change the rules when he wants. By the time he feels you are getting too close to him, he changes the rules.”

Sagay would like to see a return to pre-colonial belief systems in Africa. He says: “Asian countries kept their language [and] religion. These two principal factors are absent in Africa. And if you look at the world map anywhere there is Christianity outside Europe there is poverty.”

Sending fowls to shut down or threaten any activism is an extremely bad idea, am the very worse person ya could want to send a dimwitted yardfowl to threaten, in saying that, the fowls are missing from BU..

  21. Mariposa, ya can get from banks malts to everything else on a small scale in US etc and much cheaper than yall ever get them in Barbados…

William..as i have told numerous people in the last months, don’t care how they believe they’ve caught with master minds, said minds will always be 400 years ahead, and they better start accepting those truths as their reality, there’s only one way out for them, reestablish their African identity, or stay as is….

  22. Go look for the video, it’s on the blog somewhere, ask Blogmaster to bring it up, was only a couple days ago, if ya weren’t around, tough….i even posted it to other forums…

  23. I think it was TLSN posted that video too…..

TLSN…that comment was for you, sorry William..

  24. Is this another fraudulent claim?

  25. No..you are the fraudulent claim….ya little denier fraud…

am sure this book is the catalyst to Walter Rodney being destroyed by his own peopole..

“For Sagay, Walter Rodney’s 1972 classic, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, remains a relevant and vital text. It argued that European governments strategically exploited Africa, during the 19th and 20th centuries, in order to develop the global north, to the detriment of Africa.”

HERE IS A SAD FACT WHICH CAN’T BE DISPUTED.

BLACK BAJANS ARE THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY ON THE 2 x 3 ISLAND IN SHEER NUMBERS HOWEVER THEY ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOTEM POLE WITH THE INDIANS AND WHITES BEING ON TOP ECONOMICALLY AND DICTATING WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE COUNTRY BEHIND THE SCENES.

  29. So you don’t know how to kindly ask Blogmaster to post the video that TLSN posted with useless powell screaming in a microphone that black immigrants will be chased out of UK and the country returned to white people…..am not going searching for any video right now, am enjoying watching the fowls watch the blog and afraid to enter…

  30. Maybe we need to invite a Robert Mugabe approach.

Which one is true? They can’t both be right. Death and being kicked out of the UK are two different things. Be honest for once. One of these days I am going to tell the blog what fraud you attempted on me. What stops me is that some other idiot will try.
    BU is full of fabricators.

  32. Hal…isn’t your wife at home, ah hope another black man tief her…

“Death and being kicked out of the UK are two different things.”

how so?? in the 1940s being rounded up and interned in camps or deported to the islands, meant certain hardships, poverty and death for black people….just as it meant for the Windrush victims, who are still DYING OFF LIKE FLIES TODAY after being disenfranchised by the May government….what kind of halfassed journalist are you anyway, even in the 70s there were hardships on the islands, i remember well,….there still is today…

under the PM in 1948 , they did not want black people in UK and tried to redirect the Windrush ship to Africa, not even to return to the Caribbean, but were over ruled …..then the campaign began by powell and those other racist criminals to terrorize black people every damn day, but here ya are pretending that you don’t know…….ya spent so much time in UK but yet ya knowledge base is being projected as limited…

  33. When did Powell start to terrorise black people? Name the year and circumstance. Are death and being kicked out the same? Were black people in the UK rounded up and interned? If so plse present us with the evidence.
Stop playing fast and loose about the Windrush. Plse remind us what the Windrush was about? Who tried to redirect the Windrush to Africa. Give evidence.
We need historical accuracy. You are not the only one on BU, but some people believe these fabrications. Tell the truth or keep quiet. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.

  34. Oh, I forgot, still waiting to hear why Walter Rodney’s book led to his death. The good things about these bogus posts is that the poor insurance man is being ignored.

  35. @ Wura,
Here is the video. Powell was an intellect of the highest order. He was a tremendous orator who could play to the gallery. He was a nasty piece of work.

He was supposed to have been a Prime Minister in waiting, however after this incendiary speech he was forced to resign his position as a cabinet minister.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lsKeRFpyKNw

  36. @ TLSN

You are right about Powell. But what the fraudster said is a misinterpretation of what you said. Powell’s speech, Rivers of Blood, using a metaphor from his classical education, was what led to Heath kicking him out of the Tory party.
But black people were not interned in the UK in the 1940s, nor did Powell make any public speech about sending black people to their death.
Then confusing the Powell saga with Windrush, including a claim that someone wanted to redirect the Windrush to Africa, is the kind of bilge that some come on BU everyday spouting. They should be called out.
I will tell you a story about the after effects of the Powell speech. There was a massive West Indian Student Centre in Earls Court (of which Tom Adams was a big noise) and in October 1968, a few weeks after the Powell speech, there was a big debate on what exactly he meant. In fact, I am the Godfather of the daughter of the president of the centre at the time.
Those were the days before Wooding and would-be lawyers were inclined to come to London to study if they wanted to be barristers. . Those pompous buggers wanted to know if Powell meant black students or the black working class bus conductors and drivers. I was horrified.
In 1978, Powell was a spent force. Those were the days of Sus and police harassment and the rise of Margaret Thatcher. She was elected in 1979, and we have had a continuity of that sophisticated kind of racism through to Brexit.
Posting nonsense as the fraudster has done will only mislead people about the history of black people in the UK.

  37. TLSN…just as he deserved, he just a public nuisance, as are racists.

thanks for enlightening Hal, i had NO intention of finding that video for him, and he can’t ask Blogmaster……the madman and fraud he is, that’s why i let post nonsense, now he can suck salt…..lol..he thinks his posts are the only ones that count and don’t read the really informative ones. that’s why he’s out to sea on this particular one.

I posted that video to a certain forum with some scholars who are now dissecting it for the information value…..others should do the same.

  38. “But black people were not interned in the UK in the 1940s, nor did Powell make any public speech about sending black people to their death.”

you’re such an idiot….did anyone make a speech before committing genocide in Africa…clown…did anyone make a speech before the Windrush scam of making YOU PAY FOR LOSING YA ANCESTORS AS BLACK HUMAN POVERTY FOR OVER 40 YEARS…..money that THEY owed financiers for releasing your ancestors from slave masters….show me the speech…you did not even know until the last 2 years and ya helped finish pay off slave master since 2015…

some genocidal maniac is going to tell Hal…i hate you and your kind and will kill you all…no dummy, it’s systematic murder, especially when they are making tens of billions of dollars off ya existence….i now see why they hired in UK…ya dumb as shite and easy to push around by those who don’t even like ya ass.

and if ya still don’t know how to read between the lines, ya should be glad that ya too old for them to do a repeat on ya..

  39. When did Powell propose sending black people to their death? Were black people interned in the UK in the 1940s? Who tried to redirect the Windrush to Africa? Evidence plse.
Abuse will not get you off the hook. Stop fabricating and get help.

  40. Oh Sorry, I apologise. I should learn to read between the lines. I must also learn to cut and paste a fraudulent email trying to frame an insurance executive, and when that fails commit a serious criminal act only to prove someone wrong. There are others like you, but you are the worst.
If you were in the UK you will be in prison by now.

  41. What the hell ya talking about your FRAUD…you really need to catch yaself, go tell that to FT who saw all your EMAILS OF LIES ON THEIR SERVERS….if ya were still working for them, they would’ve have fired ya ass for being so deceitful.

Prison my ass, if you claimed to contact Lloyds of London, claimed you sent them an email….and lied about that, yes FT saw the email ya saved as a draft and claimed ya sent it to Lloyds…it’s going to follow you on BU all that the time, did i mention i still got all ya fraudulent emails…..i can still post them everywhere ya know…ya are never getting out of it, ya are my bitch for all those lies you told..

  42. The only person need help here is you…so did you manage Nathalee and groom her to get into the parliament as ya got here on BU asking to contact for that…so what happened to Nathalee since then, ya old fraud, ya weren’t happy i exposed you on BU, ya just had to start up again when Nathalee made her political entrance….and know ya are just another old trickster from the IVY…

  43. You are sad. You seriously need help. You live in a fantasy world.

  44. Oh really, but i got the receipts AND EVIDENCE…

  45. Wow. You are really, really sad. However, I am going to read between the lines and end this awful conversation. There is a place for all mad people.
By the way, have you got my picture on your receipts? Was that for the cash you paid me? You are not just a fabricator, but a criminal.
