Grenville Phillips, Candidate for St. George North and Leader of Solutions Barbados

From my visits to almost every community in St George North, I have found one consistent desperate need. The employed want work for the unemployed, and the unemployed want work. All other issues were secondary.

All five candidates in this by-election (BLP, DLP, Solutions Barbados, UPP, and PdP) have a responsibility to propose workable solutions to the unemployment problems in St George North. The plans must not depend on new government funding, because the Government will claim that they have no money.

If a candidate does not have a workable plan, then they need to devise one. The plan should be fully operational in the 30 months remaining in the current election cycle.

UNCONSCIONABLE PRETENSE

If a candidate does not have a workable plan, then they should stop pretending that they do. It is unconscionable to give desperately hurting people false hope and empty promises.

The people of St George North do not only need a Member of Parliament (MP) in this by-election. There are so many MP’s in the House of Assembly, that the Prime Minister does not know what to do with them. The people of St George North need someone to manage workable employment generating projects.

Our plan is designed to make St George North the most prosperous constituency in Barbados. Both the plan, and my capacity to implement it, are contained in Solutions Barbados’ manifesto (attached). Please contact us if you have not received your copy.

All constituencies in Barbados are hurting. St George North voters have a responsibility to give them hope, and not let them down. They can do this by voting for the best plan for themselves, not their party.

If people are prospering, then families, businesses, churches, and community organisations automatically benefit.

    The young man now is seemingly caught up in political mud slinging
    Hence the blp yardfowls would have plenty to say on this issue
    However when one take into consideration Mia stance on the decriminalization of marijuana Kemar problem pales in significant to the past issue of Morris who was held and accused of rape charges and who now holds a prestigious post in the blp organization as spoke person for the govt

    Ruby Park is packed with returnees most of whom fit in quite nicely. I never had a problem with any of them. Returning Bajans are just Bajans who went away and came back. What’s the big deal?????

    What happened to the presumption of Innocence? Jeez an arrest for possession of a quantity of drugs is all we know so far and the holier than thou brigade and the BLP operative are off to the races “he should resign”.

    If it is for possession of a small quantity of marijuana for personal use I don’t see the big deal but I live in a place where the laws are much more liberal than what pertains in Barbados and I don’t indulge in the stuff but the Gov’t is like the little boy with his finger in the dike when it comes to prosecuting these kind of offences. It should scrap its proposed referendum on the subject and proceed to amending the law hey it hasn’t asked the country about becoming a Republic but its full steam ahead.

    Failing that lets subject every public employee to a random drug test, starting with the politicians and the Police and let me know the results.

    i know many present politicians on both sides who smoke weed. i understand what you are saying re small quantity possession. but that is not the issue. at present it is still an offence. Stuart is in an important role in a political party. he should resign

    A couple high commissioners got involved in the so-called Windrush controversy, but that is another story. As far as I know, no actual governments got involved. One prime minister even accepted a £7bn handout from David Cameron to build a prison to house deportees.

I recall sunshine girl telling me I could never get a job in the EU.🤣🤣🤣 However, not all Bajans in the diaspora are like Hal Austin and many contribute their ideas and skills without seeking the limelight. Hal and Greene are frauds, who are constantly contradicting themselves to fit their narrative.

    Thanks. The one word I have NEVER used is hate, unless I am quoting someone else. It is a Barbadian word, not often used where I live. So, the moment you see it associated with me you know it is fabricated. Some people like seeking attention. Ignore them.

    Well argued, Sarge!

    The decimalization of marijuana would affect only a minority of people; although it would put a lot of people out of ‘profitable’ business including the lawyers.

    Why should members of the Rastafarian community be given special privileges to use marijuana based on religious grounds whereas the rest of the society is discriminated against?

    Isn’t this Unconstitutional and representing the ‘reverse’ side of the coin called religious discrimination?

    Why should same sex marriages undergo a referendum whereas the use of marijuana by a similar ‘minority’ social grouping can be legislated by 30 members of Parliament without reference to the majority of bigoted Bajans?

    So why not put the proposed change to Republic status (overturning over 300 years of a monarchical relationship) to the ‘democratic acid test’ of Referendum?

    Going the ‘Republic’ route will affect all the people in Barbados and will involve not only tremendous re-branding costs but also a political and cultural sea-change.

    For there ought to be no more Sir “This” and Lady “That” or “QC” or the wearing of royal pips and crowns.

    The young fellow should step aside to avoid the confusion and distraction. I for sure will not be condemning the young man for a spliff even though it is against the law. The law right now is silly and what is proposed to replace it is confusing though moving in the right direction.

    And yes, it is only an allegation and not a conviction but I believe it is too much to handle at this time.

    He is young and will recover.

    You will note that I only mention your name when directly referencing you. You have pit my name in almost everything you write. Kindly extend to me the courtesy of only putting my name in correspondence when directly referring to what I write on this blog or if you happen to come across anything I have written elsewhere.
    I expected you to rejoice at the young gentleman’s predicament. After all he is not a member of the BLP. I am a father and grandfather, I tend to look at things differently. I was in Barbados for the entire duration of the last election. There are several MPs and former MPs who smoke marijuana.
    I totally agree with the efforts by the current administration to decriminalize marijuana.
    In short , since I have supported the decriminalization of marijuana for over forty years, I personally consider the young gentleman’s transgression to be no big thing.
    If a random drug test were carried out in parliament right now, we would need several by-elections because quite a few maybe found to smoke marijuana.

    The young Mr Stuart has made a serious mistake. Instead of being caught with a small quantity of marijuana he should have had a large quantity of cocaine instead.

    Then he would have been let go with no issue. Happens all the time in Bim.

    I do find some remarks from @Austin to be ‘contradictory’ but that’s a vastly different thing to being a fraud!

    If you can objectively call either of them (just based on their posts, mind you) as guys ‘practicing deception’ or trying to trick us then I could just as easily surmise that your (well mine too, but you are a true-red fan) PM must be one miracle away from being anointed a saint! In sum, we can say whatever BS catches our fancy!

    Let’s be serious, fah real… regardless of critiques clearly both gents have their hearts and souls affixed to Bim’s success!

    Imagine these:
    1. A big wig corporate leader is found on a company yacht with a large quantity of illegal drugs. He is set free and back in the society;
    2. A Speaker of the House if Assembly, also an Attorney at Law, withheld thousands of dollars of an elderly client funds. He never resigned ; was told to get a lawyer;
    3. A member of Parliament publicly admits owing income tax and was not bothered;
    Some political hypocrites are now calling for a man to resign from a party position before he even goes before the law courts.
    I say no more.

    Is Mr. Stuart a member of the now defunct National Democratic Party? That’s the only party William Skinner have ever belonged to. Why do you think it necessary to put me in some box? Aren’t you tired of writing the same thing day after day? Can’t you see how you are now seen on this blog? Nobody is going to ever agree with you and your attempts to daily put whoever disagrees with you as Dees. A political heavyweight like you should know when you are fighting a losing battle.
    Once more , I support the decriminalization of mariquana. Whether it was Mr. Stuart or you , I would have the same position.

    We can all get morally confused about experiences such as Mr Stuart’s. And, in typical BU terms, the discussion strays all over the place.
    The fact is that Mr Stuart is accused of a serious offence , cut out the nonsense about possession of marijuana being a low-level offence and is no more dangerous than alcohol.
    The moment that became public knowledge, he should have resigned, and failing that, the leadership should have moved to suspend him immediately.
    If convicted, then he should be sacked. No ifs, no buts, no nonsense about being an intelligent young man. Leadership means setting an example.
    Of course, there are questions to be answered: when was he arrested? Was he aware of the likely charges when he stood for the general secretaryship of the DLP? When did he inform the leadership? Was the BLP leadership aware of the likely charges and, if so, how long for? If he is not properly dealt with now, the delay may impact the by-election.
    Tho drift off in to silly discussions about Charles Herbert is one of the awful things about whataboutism. There is no doubt that Charles Herbert should have faced a trial by jury and the intervention by the DPP on dubious grounds, including not in the public interest to prosecute him, was spurious. We have already discussed that.
    But what has that got to do with Kemar Stuart? Cut out the moral relativity and give the young man proper talking to.

    Suffice to make one small ‘two-step” of my ‘BELIEFS’… I find it contradictory (hypocritical, is how I described it) for you to label our political posturing in various pejorative terms (the Bajan condition, being one) and then opine on similar UK or other political posturing in comparatively benign ways; I find it similarly contradictory for you to opine on the importance of multiculturalism, or better stated the benefits Bajan immigrants like yourself gave to the UK and what in turn you gained from that country and yet use coded wording of xenophobic mouthing to repeatedly describe (one example) the late DPP by his birth nation!

    No need to respond bro, I know my logic and beliefs defy reason so clearly it’s all me and how you present your commentaries is perfectly in order. Nothing about what or how your process data here is contradictory or hypocritical … well let me rephrase that (so as not to contradict MYSELF) … not EVERYTHNG you say here is contradictory or hypocritical: You also post some excellent stuff!

    Steupse! My opinion on the use of marijuana has evolved over time, same as my opinion on homosexuality. I have only recently expressed my opinion on the use of marijuana, I think, during the Throne Speech where I agreed with the PM on ALL THREE of her controversal moves. Others dwelt on the negative aspect of the fine whereas I was focussed more on the chance to avoid being jailed. On further thought I agreed that there should be no fine.

    My opinion has not changed to suit Mr. Stuart. That is just you being the only you you know how to be.

    1. He thinks that he should
    2. The DLP executive /members have a vote that require him to .

    Everyone else is free to have and state their opinions on how and when buy it up to those two.

    I have said before that I do not understand your line of argument. Please give me one example of a form of social or discursive behavior which I call the Bajan Condition and a similar thing in the UK in which I have be accepting. Just one and be specific.
    I believe that you have ideas and prejudices which you try desperately to pass on to me. Give one example, on BU or elsewhere in which I supported so-called multiculturalism, not vague statements.
    Plse remind me of the things I have said Bajans immigrant ‘gave to the UK’ and what I (we) gained, apart from a job. What coded words have I use in my xenophobic mouthing to repeatedly describe ‘(one example) the DPP by his birth nation.
    I have described the late DPP as Guyana-born. What is coded about that? You have little demons going round in your head which you are trying to pass on to me. Stop trying to interpret what I say. If you are not sure ask for an explanation.
    Of course, say you do not agree with me, but do not attribute things to me I have not said. I do not speak in code. That is why I do not understand your logic. You debate with demons in your head, not with what I say.
    You have NEVER heard me talking about the relevance of multi-culturalism. NEVER, EVER. This is pure malicious fabrication, which you most probably know to be untrue.
    The more discerning reader on BU would tell you I have said on numerous occasions that the multicultural experiment has failed. What do you find difficult about that to understand?
    When the Nation and Barbados Today and newspapers all over the world describe people as X-born, that is a description, when I use it it becomes xenophobic code. Again, that is in your head. What have I gained from the UK, apart from what I have worked for?
    Let me say again, I am not here looking for validation, so if you think some of my ‘stuff’ is good or not, that is totally irrelevant to me.

    This blasted idiot Lorenzo keeps talking about my side. What good things have I said about the DLP since I’ve been here that did not involve Errol Barrow? And even then I had to relook and re-evaluate in light of the Public Order Act Skinner keeps cussing him for. I was young when that happened and not as politically aware as a Koochie Koo.

    I had no problem with Sandi until somebody belatedly told me he had raised the salaries of parliamentarians just before he took eight percent from everybody else. I was young and not paying attention.

    I have said that David Thompson’s first budget let the air out of my balloon. Even now, I remember sitting in my bathtub and thinking,
    “Is it me or was that totally uninspiring?”

    And then there was CLICO! With SOLID EVIDENCE. Not just rumours and innuendo.

    Then David died.

    New leader. Not Owen whose attitude I never liked and whose policies I did not like. The only BLP PM I liked was Bree St. John. He always seemed different. Not your typical politician.

    And so we were left with Freundel who quickly went back on his promise to maintain tuition fee free tertiary education at UWI. Strike one. Two and three followed in rapid succession and as far as I was concerned, he was out shortly after the election.

    So…when I came to BU I was thoroughly disenchanted with the Stuart administration and ready to blow.

    And then with reservation but with no real choice I voted BLP.

    Since then I have agreed and disagreed with them and have not had one good word to say about the old guard of the DLP or even Verla Depeiza who has not impressed.

    So what is my side?????

    Mottley admitted in parliament that a corporate concern of hers owed taxes which at the time , she had “hoped” to address / pay soon. This was prior to being PM.

    I am surprised that you want my opinion.

    I have a son who is 22. He has often acted different to how I instructed him. I have had to make a few adjustments and to rethink a few things.

    On this matter and young man, I have no opinion.

    If he was my son, I would tell him to hold on as long as he possibly can. I suspect he will gather more support the longer he holds out. This may end up garnering him some support for those who want changes in the drug laws.

    Hang in there young man.

    Think of Lorenzo as a light switch with just two modes, BLP or DLP. There is no intermediate position. It does not have the capacity to dim the lights.

    If you want the switch to move or to be off the list, repeatedly say something nice about the Bees or cuss the Dees.
