[We’re] not having a Budget or anything soon because it is just too fluid [blogmaster’s emphasis] . . . The budget was not intended to have any new taxes and therefore there is no reason for an immediate budget and we therefore will wait and see,” Mottley told media managers during a meeting yesterday at Government Headquarters.

Source: Mottley: No budget, we’ll wait and see

Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced this week the cancellation of the Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals  (budget). Some will agree with Mottley that government’s economic policy is heavily influenced by BERT and relieving the country from the annual talk shop starring MPs and Senators is welcomed.

The use of the word ‘fluid’ by the prime minister is interesting against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are fixated on the public health requirement. Policymakers must also think about positioning the country to recover quickly from the crisis.

The blogmaster hopes the reason offered by the prime minster for cancelling the ‘budget’ is the usual political flummery. Barbados finds itself in a tenuous position after many years of economic decline. Two years into BERT the COVID-19 pandemic could not have reared its head at a worse time. It exposes what we have always known – Barbados like other countries in the region are most vulnerable to shocks (exogenous). It defines an open economy.

It is the observation of this blogmaster that commenters in this forum and elsewhere experience difficulty walking and chewing gum when discussing the issues.  Of course public health safety is the priority but it cannot be the only priority.

Discuss for 25 marks how we must use another global crisis to reorder the way Barbadians do business at the household and national level.

What we have to worry about is that the virus DOES NOT force us to reorder how we manage our affairs at a national and household level. If we reorder how we manage our affairs then we would have nothing to worry about. If we continue to be lacking in vision, planning, willpower, effective leadership, active citizenship and energy we will soon regret it.

There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat. And we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures – William Shakespeare

This is an OPPORTUNE time to pause and reflect. This pain need not be in vain!

  1. @WURA-War-on-U March 19, 2020 10:06 AM “Barbados will continue exporting cases until they are stopped.”

Barbados has NOT exported any cases. The two initial cases in Barbados were BOTH IMPORTED FROM THE great USA, which as we all know is not a shithole country.

  2. @WURA-War-on-U March 19, 2020 5:20 PM “who could forget that, Barbados forever being Backward Central…deported the doctor, think his name was Schollsberg or some such, just because he warned them about the Aids epidemic.”

    This is a LIE.

Barbados was aware of the AIDS epidemic long before the English doctor arrived. The English doctor’s contract was not renewed because he said that by the year 2,000 half of Bajans would be dead of AIDS. We are still here. Dr. Mickey Waldron refuted the English doctor’s modelling/his thesis. Dr. Waldron was right. The English doctor was wrong.

The English doctor was working primarily with prostitutes and their clients, and he seemed to have assumed incorrectly that the average bajan has as many sexual partners as prostitutes and their clients.

    We do not.

Most of us have very boring sex lives, same old, same old partner for decades and decades at a time.

  3. @ Silly woman,

boring sex life ? speak for yourself. lol

  4. @ Hants March 19, 2020 11:02 PM @ Silly woman, boring sex life ? speak for yourself. lol”

You is bare, bare trouble. Galong do.

    Lol!

  5. I got yam skins to grow and English potatoes but I never tried this!!

  6. Spring break!!

What was the point of having children?

  7. Haiti has 2 cases now.

    Barbados has 5!!

  8. Trump should quarantine Fort Lauderdale and Miami and the universities get rid of those who don’t return.

These young idiots are the ones Bernie wants to get free university education, paid for by their parents!!

  9. @ Silly Woman March 19, 2020 10:40 PM

If I am not mistaken, the English doctor referred to the fact that would be a rapid increase in infected persons and as a result Dr. Jacob was appointed to lead the AIDS task force and an advertising blitz was launched.

Dr. Mickey Waldron is a pompous fellow ( I am declaring an interest ): he once was of the opinion that I knew little or nothing about microbiology. Had the nerve to say so in the press. I soon showed him the error of his ways by revealing that not only was my doctorate in microbiology ,but that I had gone on to do post doctoral studies in the same discipline. I reminded him ( in the press) that what I had forgotten about the topic he would do well to learn. The problem here in Barbados is that medical doctors are held with high regard even when they do not know what they are talking about. Take for example the current viral affair: A microbiologist and an
epidemiologist should be giving updates on the matter not the medical officer. Thus you have this bit about the viral particles being only in droplets not aerosols.
I have no problem with your being nationalistic ( for some one who is opposed to the shedding of blood) you seem ready in this instance to take up arms.

  10. Spring breakers are kamikaze, the invincible young until they get sick.

This is one way to push back at the speed of the infection. With the island’s limited resources, that may be quite the challenge, but those countries will soon be in a shut down phase anyway, Canada already shut it’s doors and only citizens and residents are allowed in, many of whom are now stuck in other countries trying to get home.

“Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has declared that persons arriving in Barbados from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe must undergo quarantine for a period of 14 days.

As the PM updated the nation this afternoon at Illaro Court on local developments of the COVID-19 illness, she stated the decision was made in response to the three new cases of the coronavirus, where the virus presented itself in Barbadians coming from New York.

She indicated that from Sunday, March 22, 2020, nationals and non-nationals must either be quarantined or undergo self-quarantine.”

  11. Silly…you are days behind.

still trying to figure out how ya going to “starve to death” in the comfort of your home” when you grow so much food and always in ya garden from sun up to sundown. The Miller will soon come out and tell ya that ya only catch the minivans once a week to ogle at young boys…what starve to death what….in the meantime take a taxi and go get a Pricemart card and buy ya necessities in bulk, once a month or even longer to expose yourself again when you do that.

Proactiveness is the key. Importation and EXPORTATION of cases have always been a problem.

“But both students are praising the Asian country’s “proactive” response amid the second wave of imported cases again threatening their safety, and are hoping Barbadian authorities take a similar approach as the country records three new cases.

Latest statistics indicate that South Korea has the highest infection rate in Asia outside of China with more than 8,400 cases resulting in 81 deaths.”

  12. @ Robert

You are right. We deify doctors and whatever their specialism we treat them as all-knowing Gods. So a basic qualification makes them qualified in everything.
I have said on here that we need medical scientists and not just doctors (applied scientists, who do not do anything original research). Is this the Mickey Waldrond who opposed Cuban doctors and young people who got their qualification in Cuba?
Barbados is more class-ridden than Apartheid South Africa. Just look at the most incompetent lawyer for an example of how this plays out. Or at those who boast of how many properties they have and their qualifications and their privileges. Or the inverse, the smearing and hostility to anyone they suspect might have had a few opportunities which they were denied.
@Robert, you SHOULD be part of any coronavirus task force, but you are a son of the soil, they prefer a foreigner.

  13. @ Hal March 20, 2020 4:13 AM

Thanks. I also had to deal with Henry Frazer in the same article: he was trying to assert that he, a medical doctor, knew more than I did about food science
By the way today is the funeral of Lucas Hinds who went to Combermere,,you may remember him, he was called by the nick-name Hannibal. He was from St. Andrew.

  14. @ Robert

Can’t remember the name. But if I saw a pic I may remember him. Condolences to his family. Is Dr Frazer the amateur historian?

  15. Is it possible to focus on the topic to bring value to those looking for looking for construct debate?

  16. I am probably wasting my energy saying this, but at the time Scholsberg made his Aids epidemic PROJECTS…important scientific data was not readily available on the disease and all it was, just a simple projection and nothing to get kicked off the island for, shortly after that health authorities had to start scrambling when all their Queen of the Bees contestants and other transexuals and closeted dudes started dying off like flies…

  17. If i remember correctly the only Queen of the Bees contestant and transsexual, including the closeted dudes left standing in that AIDs debacle was a popular one called Erma La Douche…am sure all the dudes remember that flamboyant one.

  18. @ Hal March 20, 2020 6:32 AM

    Yes.,the same Frazer.

    @ David March 20, 2020 6:40 AM

Isn’t stating that a microbiologist and an epidemiologist should be dealing with the information salient to the topic? You seem to be in panic-prone state. Relax yourself.

  19. @ Silly Woman March 19, 2020 10:06 PM
“@John March 19, 2020 8:10 AM “What’s the difference between corona virus and flu?”
Apparently this corona is much more infectious as the flu, and 10 times as likely to kill. Basically the difference is the same as the difference between me and Usain Bolt.”
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    \
You are right on the comparison between you and Bolt.
A volte-face of a Lightning turnaround in your early position when you argue that Covid was nothing but another garden variety of the common harmless yearly bug called the flu.

They are related just like the chimpanzee is related to humans since they are both members of the primate family tree; but clearly one being much more dangerous than the other.

But we are all here to learn from our mistakes. At least you have learned that “ground food is also good for you since, in their skins, they contain rare minerals (selenium, copper, zinc etc) required to maintain your immune system in a fit condition necessary to function as the daily fighting army against microscopic enemies to protect the human body.

You ought to thank your god you are able to work that land in the Sunshine not only to provide you with a ‘naturally cheap’ form of exercise but also your ‘free’ daily intake of vitamin D.

It is looking more and more that there would be no need for the ‘Fat Tax’ now that imported processed food might find it rather difficult to make a come back.

  20. Simple Silly…is lucky she is growing her own food…. Just want her to remember those who never surivived the Aids epidemic and also thanks to the ever present dependency tourism many thousands of local unaware victims died when there was no need for that..

That is always the problem with cruise ships and planes, floating and flying petri dishes.

“Three people on-board a cruise ship that docked in Sydney on Thursday have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Two passengers and one crew member who were on the Ruby Princess cruise ship returned positive results, and one is in a serious condition.

An additional passenger is also very ill in Tasmania and is likely to have the virus.

Authorities are trying to track down others who were on-board the ship after it docked in the city following a short cruise to New Zealand.

NSW chief medical officer Kerry Chant said the ship had been considered ‘low risk’ before the diagnoses.

Four people on-board the Ruby Princess cruise ship have tested positive for the coronavirus (pictured at Circular Quay on Thursday) after it docked in Sydney

The ship had more than 1,100 crew and close to 2,700 passengers, New South Wales health minister Brad Hazzard told reporters on Friday afternoon.

Mr Hazzard said those on board were told to self-isolate and authorities were desperately trying to phone the thousands of passengers to ensure they were aware of the infections.

Doctors tested 13 unwell patients for COVID-19.

‘Two of the three positive results were people who were passengers on board the ship,’ NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told reporters on Friday.

  21. @Dr. Lucas

Is that all you and your stated?

Are you sure those skill sets are not being leveraged behind the scenes?

The local authorities are rolling out protocols informed by WHO and PAHO no so?

“RÉCIT Les mesures diffèrent d’un pays à l’autre, mais, désormais, c’est le continent entier qui tourne au ralenti.

Rues désertes, cafés et restaurants fermés, écoles silencieuses, files d’attente devant les magasins d’alimentation, touristes envolés : en l’espace de quelques jours seulement, les capitales européennes, en confinement ou pas (encore), ont été plongées, les unes après les autres, dans l’inconnu.

  25. @ Robert

What you and @GP are saying is relevant to the coronavirus pandemic as it speaks to how Barbadian authorities deal with shocks, in this case a health shock.
Science, like the social sciences, is based on competing theories and, by fair means and foul, the dominant one is the one that has defeated the others in the popular imagination.
For example, European medicine has defeated African and Native American medicines by outlawing them. In our case, African medicines were called obeah/voodoo and dismissed as primitive. We now know that many of the cures and treatments recommended by traditional doctors have been incorporated in to European medicines. Just go to any health food shop.
I remember once staying in a hotel on Paradise island and hearing a mature Bahamian woman explaining some magical powers about some bush. When I looked it was what we called love vine in Barbados. She came to me and whispered not to say anything.
I am not sure what she was saying, or the truth of it, but common sense tells us that the reason old people called it love vine was for a reason.
Where are our research scientists? Where are our competing theories of scientific knowledge? When people should be deleted they are not (ie @Lance) when free speech should be allowed so as to develop knowledge, it is threatened with closure or ridiculed. Why? The Bajan Condition at play.

  26. How is Barbados dealing with the pandemic that is so different to other countries? We are doing the best that we can given the constraint of financial and other resources. Is there anything that we do in Barbados that you support besides always wallowing in an opinion informed by he Bajan condition? If we are a failed state what do you expect anyway.

  27. @ David March 20, 2020 8:26 AM

“The local authorities are rolling out protocols informed by WHO and PAHO no so?
    Moving on.”

I maintain that the viral particle will also be found in the aerosol in a sneeze. Are the WHO and PAHO which are political organizations God? Why then was there mess-ups in Haiti and with Ebola? Stop panicking..

  28. Not sure who is disputing your view, certainly not the blogmaster. Time will tell.

Do you have the science to support your position? Such an opinion should be evidenced base?

  29. RE What you and @GP are saying is relevant to the coronavirus pandemic as it speaks to how Barbadian authorities deal with shocks, in this case a health shock.

IT IS RELEVANT BECAUSE IT POINTS OUT THAT A FEW VOICES DETERMINE WHAT SHOULD BE SAID OR BELIEVED ACCORDING TO THEIR BIASES OR SENSE OF IMPORTANCE.

SOMETIMES GOD HAS ENDOWED “LESSER” LIGHTS TO SHINE—–LESSER IN TERMS OF THE THINKING OF THE POWERS THAT BE

E.G HOW IS IT THAT E O DOUGLIN IS NOT A MAJOR PLAYER IN PRESENTING ANY OF THE MOH’S PROPAGANDA IN THE CURRENT CORONAVIRUS CONUNDRUM?

NOT ONLY IS HE NOW ONE OF THE MOST SENIOR DOCTORS LEFT, BUT HE IS ONE OF THE FEW, IF ANY WHO STRESSES BOTANICAL MEDICINE IN HIS THERAPEUTIC REGIMES

  30. Further comments ofthis type will be deleted. Here it is we are faced with a pandemic and you guys see value in rehashing old stuff

Blogmaster. There you go again. Why can’t GP and Lucas shed light on some of the nonsense that goes on in this joke of a country we have?

Many who interacted with the knighted former guardians of the local medical profession would say the same thing.

Are you trying to mine ideas for your political masters?

  31. How we deal with the pandemic is nothing to do with fake nationalism. What resources? What finances? Our fight back should be led by the science, not just medical practitioners, or politicians. Doctors have limited expertise, especially public health specialists.
We want our epidemiologists to be involved; our mathematicians; our biochemists; micro-biologists; we need sound policies such as social distancing, closing borders to travellers and allowing in only goods; we need to protect businesses and jobs; we need to protect the vulnerable.
Most of all, when it comes to human resources, we need people of the calibre of @Robert Lucas to be involved in our thinking. Not just politicians suffering from verbal diarrhoea. This is the health of the nation, not a political campaign.
Then again, the Stuart government was responsible for coronavirus.

  32. Here is an idea..

…New Yorkers are still waiting desperately for testing, the authorities have started drive through testing in some boroughs but it has not reached everyone yet…..doctors are being proactive and speaking to their concerned patients and those feeling ill by telephone until help arrives.

    copy the positives..

  33. Not sure who is disputing your view, certainly not the blogmaster. Time will tell.
Do you have the science to support your position? Such an opinion should be evidenced base?.(Quote)

How confusing. One minute the threat of being deleted, now this nonsense. Further, some dimwit questioning the scientific knowledge of a proven scientists with nonsense about evidence.
What is good about all this is that it proves to the blog that my view of the chairman is not biased, but simply based on his contributions to BU. Had these been anonymous contributions most of us would just ignore them.

  34. WHEN I FIRST POSTED ON BU IN 2008 I WAS DEEMED THE DR IN RESIDENCE……..BUT NOW?

MY FATHER ALWAYS USED TO SAY “FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT!”:

  35. Ordinary people do not have to understand biochemistry to appreciate what Doughlin is saying, he attached a layman language as well. In other words is content catered to people at different points of the learning index.

  36. Spot on!

  37. @ David March 20, 2020 9:40 AM

“Do you have the science to support your position? Such an opinion should be evidenced base?

An aerosol is basically what is known in physical chemistry as a colloidal sol. Particles of a certain size and molecular weight are too heavy to remain suspended in the air and by gravity fall to the ground.Smoke is an example of a solid aerosol, because we have soot particles (solid) in the air. Similarly when one sneezes ,the viral or bacteria particle represent the solid part. The solid part is called the disperse phase, (in this case the viral/bacterial particle) and the air, the disperse medium. As is the case with smoke, the heavier particles fall by gravity out of the sol. Similarly, this also occurs with the aerosol when one sneezes. Viruses range in size from about 20 to 400 nanometres in diameter (1 nanometre = 10-9 meters). By contrast, the smallest bacteria are about 400 nanometres in size. The molecular weight of viruses is much smaller than that of bacteria.

@Mr Blogmaster re comment… “Further comments of this type will be deleted. Here it is we are faced with a pandemic and you guys see value in rehashing old stuff.”… I wish you luck with that.

This is a normal part of life so not sure how you can separate a standard human condition of ego (envy, one-ups-man-ship,superiority complex et al) from this novel, way-station stop on our life track!

Whether we like it or not that intrigue or drama of those stories simply reinforces the simple fact that those on the inside get there and stay there because of sharp elbows and often nefarious acts…those on the outside generally would use the same tactics to get inside if personnel conditions were more to the liking i.e. they worked with those who were less ego driven.

It’s that human condition called life!

  39. @Dr. Lucas

Your position is understood. So far based on what this blogmaster has read all is not known about Covid 19- maybe you will be proved correct. You should write an article.

  40. @Dee Word

Understood but intelligent people should be able to make relevant comments to address the urgent matters at hand and leave egos at the door.

  41. @ GP

You have hit it the head. Familiarity breeds contempt. Those wise old heads. By coming on BU and trying to engage in popular discussions your expertise is dismissed. That is why when some people with trained knowledge keep away from the mass discussions they are sometimes ridiculed. There is a good reason for it in Barbados. In the UK such people are celebrated.
In Barbados it is a spectator sport, pulling people down. There is a reason why we are where we are. I again say to young people, get out and stay out.

  42. Thanks for your advice. Very constructive.

    Now go and advise Boris.

  43. There are videos available from survivors who are giving real life accounts of their experiences while consumed by the virus, none of them are pretty to see and hear and they are circulating on whatsapp, have been for days, particularly when those patients were at their lowest point and never thought they would surivive and are still left crippled although recovering, it is noted that some of these people were extremely healthy before infection.

Am sure leaders in the Caribbean including many doctors and other health professionals have seen these videos, so work from there to achieve containment, there is still a little time left..

  44. Is government /the ministry of health testing frontline workers? If so, what are the results? If not, why not?

  45. RE Ordinary people do not have to understand biochemistry to appreciate what Doughlin is saying, he attached a layman language as well. In other words is content catered to people at different points of the learning index.

    THIS IS PURE BULL
DOUGLA GAVE A BIOCHEMISTRY LECTURE IN PART TO A CONGREGATION THAT HE HAS BEEN DISCUSSING CERTAIN ISSUES TO, BECAUSE THIS IS THE MODUS OPERANDI OF THE SDA ORGANIZATION

COME ON THEN TELL ME BOUT ALLICIN AND GLUTHATIONE AND N ACETYLY CYSTEINE AND HOW IT WORKS

ALL YOU KNOW IS THAT WHAT DOUGHLA SAID SOUNDS GOOD

RE intelligent people should be able to make relevant comments to address the urgent matters at hand and leave egos at the door.

INTELLIGENT PEOPLE NO LONGER make relevant comments to address the urgent matters at hand BECAUSE THEY MEET WITH BULLSHIT FROM THE BU BARKERS BRAYERS AND BRIMBLERS WHO DO NOT KNOW AND WILL NOT BE TAUGHT, BUT SERVE ONLY TO PULL DOWN

INTELLIGENT PEOPLE LEARN TO KEEP QUIET AND LISTEN

  46. We had to know biochemistry to understand what he stated about boosting with Vitamin c?

About the use of garlic etc ?

    Piss in muh pocket do.

You may have the last word.

There is a reason why Doughlins radio program is a must listen to ordinary Bajans .

  47. AM I TO BELIEVE THAT THE BIOCHEMISTRY WHICH BRIGHT MEDICAL STUDENTS FIND DIFFICULT TO GRASP
IS UNDERSTOOD BY BU BLOGGERS FROM A PRESENTATION WITH RELATIVELY LITTLE INFORMATION?

  48. RE SO YOU GOT SOMETHING FROM WHAT HE SAID ABOUT Vitamin c AND About the use of garlic etc ?
SO IS THAT ALL YOU LEARNED?
HE SAID LOTS OF MORE IMPORTANT THINGS
    DID YOU GET THOSE TOO?
