The Coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to soak up the resources for both under developed and developed countries. At the time of posting this blog the global medical community has been unable to inform about a vaccine. The blogmaster read the perspective of a leading Australian virologist recently where she opined that the world will have to live with the virus, in fact it will become as accepted as the Flu.

The disruption caused by COVID-19 will impact service based economies like Barbados and others in the reason where it hurts, in the breadbasket. One could rehash old arguments about the folly of putting all our eggs in one basket. If we are to work hard to move from the unsustainable position we find ourselves, we have to do more to shift our over reliance on tourism. Government’s current investment pipeline has signaled there are no immediate or medium term plans to modify the economic engines firing the economy.

If there ever was an opportunity to message our leaders there is an urgent need to reorder how we do business, it is now.

The local authorities based on public announcements and news coverage have been rolling out awareness campaigns, bumping up screening at ports of entry, building health infrastructure and leading discussions at the regional level to ensure a regional COVID-19 approach. Given the pandemic nature of COVID-19, it seems a matter of time before Barbados reports its first case. The biggest challenge for Barbados and service based economies is the fatalistic impact disruptions to global supply chains will bring.

    Let me repeat what I have stated previously, I would not be surprised if the virus is not already present in Barbados. For those who want to use alcohol as sanitizer, you will need to use the 70% strength one. if the alcohol being used is 80% or more one can easily convert by using the following formula from school days chemistry: N1 V1= N2 V2.
    where N1 represents the 80% alcohol and V1 the volume being used to convert to 70%.
    substituting in the above formula we have :

    80% x 100 = 70% xV2, where 100 represents the volume of 80% alcohol being used and V2 the volume to which V1 must be diluted with water to reach 70%

    8000= 70V2 V2 =8000/70 = 114.25

    Therefore 100 parts of V1 must be diluted to 114.25 with water. to get 70% alcohol. You can add glycerol to the alcohol to prevent the hand drying out.

    Bleach can also be used. As a matter of fact it has more disinfectant qualities. There a plenty of bleach on the market. A tablespoon or two to a gallon of water would be adequate enough.

    Health Min­is­ter Ter­rence Deyals­ingh says no cruise ships will be al­lowed to berth in ei­ther Trinidad or To­ba­go for the rest of the cruise ship sea­son.

    Speak­ing at a post-Cab­i­net me­dia brief­ing on Thurs­day, Deyals­ingh said the de­ci­sion was tak­en as the Gov­ern­ment steps up its ef­forts to stop or de­lay the coro­n­avirus (COVID-19) from reach­ing T&T’s shores.

    He said ac­cord­ing to the cruise ship sched­ule, there were five cruise ships sched­uled to berth in Trinidad and sev­en in To­ba­go be­fore the end of the sea­son. The cruise ship sea­son runs from De­cem­ber 12, 2019 to April 24, 2020.

    Deyals­ingh said the de­ci­sion was tak­en by Cab­i­net note on Thurs­day morn­ing.

    “We don’t feel that we need to take on that type of risk, we want to pre­serve our health care sys­tem, our sup­plies and our test kits,” Deyals­ingh said.

    He said the ban will af­fect trade and tourism but said the move is for the greater good to pro­tect the health of T&T’s 1.3 mil­lion pop­u­la­tion.”

    Lol Waru you should be more scared than me as that boyfriend of yours is capable of having it but lucky for you transmission from mans best friend hasn’t been proven yet.
    Sarge what I was saying is that the numbers put out about the number of people who have it in Ontario is low , and I don’t believe our open flight policy gives me any belief in those numbers. If I was in Iran and felt tired etc I would be trying to get on a plane to a country where I knew I would be taken care of wouldn’t you.So if that is the case and we have had x number of people coming everyday from seriously infected areas believing that we only have a few cases defies logic..

    Based on what i have heard coming from the CDC and WHO i am yet to hear mention of people under 60 that are at risk to contracting the virus
    The emphasis has always been placed on the elderly and people whose immune system is compromised because of certain illness
    Telling me that a school in Georgia was closed does not answer the gist of the question as to why a low emphasis was placed on children and people under 60 to contract the virus

    The coronavirus pandemic has killed over 4,000 people around the world, affecting over 100 different countries. It is making its way through the U.S., impacting 35 states so far with over 1,300 confirmed cases.

    There are likely far more cases that medical professionals aren’t aware of — and that’s because of the lack of available coronavirus testing kits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    Making it’s way to the Caribbean one person at a time.

    A” passenger on a Caribbean Airlines Ltd (CAL) flight from New York to Guyana via Piarco International Airport tested positive for covid19, the state airline said in a statement Thursday.

    The passenger, CAL said, travelled on March 7 on flight BW 521, from the John F Kennedy International Airport in New York to Piarco International Airport, Trinidad in transit (on the same day) and on to BW 526 to Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Guyana.

    The person subsequently tested positive for covid19 at a public health facility in Guyana. “Caribbean Airlines assures all stakeholders that the safety, security and good health of its customers and employees is its highest priority and when the information on the passenger was received, immediate action was taken,” the airline said.”

    Mariposa…anyone can and will get infected with the virus, a baby boy in Calgary just got diagnosed, it’s the luck of the draw that the elderly and the immune compromised are the ones dying, the others stand a better chance of recovery and some only show mild symptoms, never get the full blown experience, the lucky ones live to tell the tale.

    Experts are wondering why Africans are not being infected at the rate of others. lots of questions still to be answered.

    Waru nice to see you just got back from ithe island, its a pity they cant find someway for the seaweed at the crane to cure the virus it would all disappear for sure.I don’t know about the African blood but I would suggest more people are trying to leave Africa than move there so that might account for part of it.
    I was pretty careful on the plane back avoiding touching things etc when I finally got home had a sense of relief to be back in Canada. Go for a bagel and coffee in the morning as I am eating it the east Indian working there is rolling a bagel in each hand and coughing and sneezing over the dough. Freaked on the manager threw the food away but came to the realization the working poor wont stay home if there sick in any industry so we are all gonna get it.

    In the meantime, Caribbean drama is still in full swing, i was wondering if he had gotten the diplomatic passport from Barbados, but now we know..

    Douglas, speaking at a news conference of his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNL), said that he had been informed by his lawyers that the Court, sitting in St. Lucia had handed down the judgement and that he has no intention of pursuing the matter further.”

    A Real Remedy for the Coronavirus Panic. Could it be something as simple as ozone?

    For those who failed Chemistry 101, Ozone is an unstable oxygen molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms as compared to the the more stable and common form of oxygen molecule consisting of 2 oxygen atoms. Ozone is formed in nature by electrical discharges (lightning) or the action of ultraviolet light. However, it can also be easily created in a lab or clinical setting with the appropriate equipment.

    Just listened to the Governor of Ohio admitting his state has 1000 test kits. When questioned about the number he said, a time is coming soon when authorities will stop testing because the the infection rate will be off the scale (blogmaster’s words).

    It is really a stretch to think that the whole world is colluding to get rid of Trump. Iran and China may have good reason and so do many other countries, even many in the EU BUT IN ITALY I”M PRETTY SURE THE RACIST RIGHT WING LOONIES LOVE HIM just as much as the Muslim-hating Indians do.

    I do believe that people are panicking too much. I do believe that the death rate will prove to be lower than the current estimate BUT IT IS STILL FAR MORE DEADLY THAN THE FLU and is not to be sneezed at .(pun intended)

    Take it easy. The worst part of all this is the fear. More people die from the flu, car accidents, or guns.

    As of Saturday, March 7th, 19 Americans had died from COVID-19, compared to 1,177 every week from the flu, 746 from car crashes, and 294 from gunshots.
