To return to Trump ….Today is day 1075 since President Trump’s inauguration in January 2017. According to the Washington Post, by December 16, 2019, he, Trump, had made a mere 15,413 false or misleading statements (otherwise known as lies). Some claim that he even lied about his father, Fred Trump’s place of birth.

Arguably, the Post’s figures might well have been inaccurate. We do not know and we will never know the exact number of lies Trump would have told family, friends, acquaintances, strangers, his Cabinet members individually or collectively, or even lies he might have told himself during the period. The Post’s figures might therefore have been limited to his “public” lies, and the Post’s estimate far too low.

Such has been POTUS’s achievement here – a far cry from President George Washington who allegedly never told a lie – that American social scientists have now developed a new category pertaining to lies: awarding politicians, such as Trump, “the bottomless Pinocchio”. He is clearly unable to control his lying; a medical condition sometimes known as “mythomania”.

By contrast, a pastor friend, a diehard Trump supporter and a black evangelical here in the N.E USA, like another friend and former Barbados unsuccessful political candidate in last year’s May 24, 2018 election; these see Trump, notwithstanding his “truthful hyperbole” as a great man of destiny. To be fair, the Pastor’s wife, more wise, more discerning, early intimated that as far as she could see “God is not the author of confusion”.

The die, however, has now been cast; the Mueller Report completed; the transcript made available; the Whistleblower’s report publicized; ditto the IG’s report; the respective House Committees have done their inquiries and Reports. and the House has voted its two Articles of Impeachment. The Senate reconvenes in short order.

It now remains for the Senate under Chief Justice Roberts to schedule and conduct its impeachment trial of the President, a rarity, in the context of looming Primaries and a 2020 Presidential election. Senators McConnell and Graham, prospective jurors in any impeachment trial, have said that they already decided the matter. What happens if or when Senator Schumer and the Democratic Senate minority somehow file with C.J Roberts a motion to disqualify McConnell and Graham and any other juror who has already prejudged the matter? And, witnesses such as Bolton and Mulvaney? Remember that for many Republicans Trump remains the only game in town.

It is therefore appropriate to essay some brief, if random, remarks on POTUS, his Administration, certain of its policies and his prospects at this juncture.

In using the term “pre-mortem”, I do not mean to suggest that Trump’s defeat this November is a foregone conclusion. We have been here before with disastrous consequences, as former Secretary of State Clinton belatedly discovered. In a sense, he must harp on the economy. and his apparent “success” …. the economy stupid”?

Yet, there is an inescapable law of diminishing returns. Just ask any older man. (Even King David, 1 Kings 1, when he was old and cold). This law, it seems, applies in almost every sphere, including politics.

Consider a politician, a man not unlike Trumpf who thinks one way. He then speaks a second way. He then acts a third way. He trifles, obfuscates, deflects, dissembles, even lies. Bullshit and trivia persist as standard, daily political fare. His public, usually fickle, often misinformed, uninformed or even dis-informed. But, as Lincoln remarked, you can trick them some of the time, but not all of them all of the time.

As reasonable people, we must therefore resist the idea of The Idiot Posing as Intellect, or some Trump (The Tramp-in-Chief), a renegade bolshevik businessman and Putin stooge masquerading and declaring himself (soi-disant) a man of high IQ and “a very stable” geni-ass. (Cf. his late Wharton School Professor, William T. Kelley, a nonagenarian, who described him as “the dumbest goddam student” he, Professor Kelley, ever had in more than 40 years teaching at Wharton; Kissinger’s reference to him as not having “a very orderly mind”; or Tillerson’s description of him – unretracted – as a “moron”; his former lawyer, Attorney Cohen’s testimony that he pressured Fordham and Wharton not to release Trump’s academic transcripts; his absence from the Dean’s list at Wharton despite his boast that he had graduated “top of his class” at Wharton; all in the context wherein he (Trump) demanded to see President Obama’s transcripts and academic materials). Truly, a man of seemingly impregnable, untouchable ignorance, with legions of rats of all varieties scurrying around upstairs.

Perhaps, Republican Senator Romney, when he was thinking more clearly, had Trump’s measure, when he counseled Trump against releasing his tax returns, and then subsequently described him as a “fraud” and a “conman”. Thus, by way of example, Trump has always proclaimed his love for the military. Yet, beyond his serial draft dodging, and whatever his personal demons, the only war he (Trump) seems ever to have fought may well have been limited to some gilded boudoir with relatively expensive “toys” such as “Stormy” Daniels and Karen McDougal, going rate between US $125K and $150K.

No one can say that he (Trump) had been in the US Air Force; then exiled himself to Canada, Sweden, Denmark, the U.K., or elsewhere, rather than kill so-called “gooks” in the “swamps” and muddy/paddy fields of Vietnam. He made the great escape. He now poses as a “chicken hawk”, like many another draft dodger.

The Reader might still note that in terms of re-election strategy, it is still open to Trump and his advisers to start a war, if necessary, and before the elections, if this will gee up his domestic support. E.g in the case of Iran. Many a red blooded American would then rally to “the cause”, with typical shouts of “USA” “USA”. The problem will be one of graduated response and escalation? In response, the Ayatollahs and the Iranian National Guard may have to decide on the feasibility of shutting down the Gulf – following up on their attack on Saudi oil infrastructure some time ago. Beyond profiteering by armaments manufacturers, the military-industrial complex, billionaire investors, what would be the implications for the world economy, OECD and LDC countries and the least developed countries?

As to the issue of race, Trump’s re-election strategy, the Black, Latino and minority vote.

Fortunately, many no longer deny the fact that POTUS is a racist. For too long, the naive denied this fact, despite the overwhelming evidence, (his spawning of birtherism, his notorious ads about the Central Park Five after their sentences had been vacated and all criminal charges against them withdrawn; the EEOC housing discrimination complaints against him – I would not be surprised if there was not at least one Barbadian family allegedly victim of his housing discrimination; his abuse of African countries and Haiti as “s—hole” countries; his attacks on the inner city as “rat and rodent infested”; his own admission that he is a “white nationalist”).

As to his palpable disdain for Mexicans, rumor once did percolate that his daughter, Tiffany, had dated a wealthy Mexican young man while at Wharton. Imagine some Mexican with his grubby paw on his beautiful, pristine, blonde, blue-eyed daughter! Enough to make a “nationalist” nauseous! Who knows the source(s) of his animus against Mexico and Mexicans?

To my mind, to deny that President Trump is a good old fashioned racist largely surrounded by white supremacist advisers, such as Stephen Miller, is like witnessing a man in a bank, pointing his gun at employees and customers on the bank’s floor, and denying that the gunman was a bank robber. What stupid poppy cock!

Yet, Trump can still make inroads into the Black Vote (with “Blacks For Trump” and some of his allies). What if Trump and his advisers, including Secretary Carson, following the reparations advocates decide to expend some political capital and give black families some sort of money (not “40 acres and a mule”, far less will do), or even Yang’s “Freedom Dividend”? Many a hungry belly black may well be seduced by such an obvious political ploy and vote for Trump.

As to his foreign policy, unlike the Kennedy Doctrine, the Johnson Doctrine, the Nixon Doctrine, and others, the Trump doctrine seems at best a series of ad hoc, incoherent, non-sequential non-points, never going beyond slogans such as “MAGA” and “America First”, reflecting Trump’s typical, torrential nonsensical tweets.

Several decades ago, the British Yearbook of International Law kindly published an article that I had written on some aspects of trade in the natural resources of Namibia (1990?). The French Revue des Revues subsequently dismissed the article in two words “tres interessante”. However, we all got it wrong. There was/is no such country as Namibia, per Trump in one of his recent addresses to the UNGA, He should be forgiven for not knowing the name of such a namby pamby “s–hole” country. And, thank God for small mercies insofar as he did not confuse Namibia with NAMBLA.

Imagine, also, that iyou were an immigrant, a green card holder, and a veteran who had been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria. You return “home” to the USA. You find yourself in conflict with the law, felony or misdemeanor. You are convicted in a court of law. You are then deported to Mexico courtesy of a Commander-in-Chief who never served. (ICE officials who might never have served either). And, there are several hundreds such deported veterans in limbo in Mexico, a country they would have left in their very early childhood when their parents brought them to the US as minor children.

We need not speak of the moral obloquy involved in Trump’s policy of separating immigrant children from their parents and caging them, with resulting psychological problems.

In the final analysis, in Trump, we have a man singularly classless, embarrassingly clueless, uninformed and unfathomably uncouth. Bristling with hubris, fire and brimstone, he is more the common man’s” Lord Haw Haw”. But, give him credit. He has normalized the abnormal…He has successfully weaponized unspeakable, mass ignorance and intellectual dishonesty in the U.S. No wonder he says he loves “the poorly educated”). He has so consolidated his leadership of the Republican Party, and might yet demoralize his divided 2020 democratic opposition, all with untold implications.

Caveat: As I have said, always beware of any politician who promises that he will end corruption and “drain the swamp”. Experience teaches that he merely brings in his own new, personal swamp, a la Trump.

A second term, however, is no picnic. Just as Nixon defeated George McGovern overwhelmingly and was then driven from Office, early in his second term; just as Bill Clinton’s Presidency was almost derailed early in his second term by the Lewinsky affair, so too Trump’s chickens may come home to roost before any second term or early in his second term if he should win. Few, if any, at any rate, can indefinitely survive a thousand cuts.

Here we go, drip, drip, drip.

They win the impeachment battle but lose the election war…

“The Department of Justice revealed in a court filing late Friday that it has two dozen emails related to President Donald Trump’s involvement in the withholding of millions in security assistance to Ukraine…”

One can’t expect that the emails would be too conclusive showing their grave wrong doings but the fact that the WH continues to obstruct a basic request to review the ‘people’s business’s is remarkable.

We shall see, we shall see.

Slow water torture can be very destructive to the psyche!

  6. The impeachment campaign launched by Nancy Pelosi has had the unintended effect of tarnishing the Democrat frontrunner, Joe Biden. Biden just lost the lead he briefly held in Iowa.

If Biden is defeated in the Iowa and New Hampshire contests, and Bernie Sanders exploits these defeats to win the Democrat presidential nomination, Trump will likely win re-election against Bernie

Which would make Nancy Pelosi the most incompetent American politician since … Hillary Clinton. Women really aren’t as bright as men.

We notice how you have apotheosized the Trumpeter to invincibly divine status equivalent to Jesus the only son of your god Yahweh and being protected by the Halo of Sol Invictus from the pusillanimous slings and arrows of impeachment coming from the Democrats.

A rather ‘interesting’ but copied piece of Satanic art. Well done, daughter of the Capitalist Devil!

The maddeningly confused trumpeter has a date with destiny. Let him blow his way back into the W H in order to fulfill his mission ordained by Beelzebub.

Or are you hoping he is stopped, short, in his quest to outdo Icarus in trying to see the face of God?

America could be falling behind in the race of technology and needs a big war to prove its Almightiness.

  9. BY EVERY MEASURE OF CONFIDENCE AMERICANS, FEEL BETTER ABOUT THE DIRECTION THEY ARE MOVING IN NOW.

For those of us who were awake in the first term of the Obama Administration knew that America was being taken in the wrong Direction. Americans saw clearly during the second term of Obama time and did not want to go in that direction any longer for they deemed it Wrong. Therefore, they Choose a Disrupter President that would also make America Great Again and who has made good on his Promises…

    Economic Prosperity
    Religious Freedom for All
    Energy Independence
Second Chance for Felons to Find Gainful Employment and Prison Reform
On the Job Training for Unqualified People in the Workforce and Advancement
    Record Employment Numbers
Lowest In History Unemployment Numbers Especially Among Minorities
    Opportunity Zones
Lower Drug Prices that will become even Lower
    Reform at the VA
    Right to Try
Consultation with the Various Segments of the Population and LISTENING TO THEM
    Trade Deals that Benefit America
Building Deterrence by improving the Military
Working to Stabilize Trouble Spots in the World
    Protecting Americas Sovereignty
Awareness of Legal and Illegal Drugs and steps taken to Reduce Incidences of Drug Addiction and Enhanced Treatments to Combat this Epidemic.
Willingness to Confront and Isolate those Countries that mean Ill to their own People and to others e.g. Iran, North Korea and Venezuela
Showing the American People that the Better Path is Free Enterprise Rather than Socialism which Promises Everything Free while Delivering Poverty, Destitution, Repression, and Loss of Individual Rights.
Trump is showing that under Free Enterprise all Peoples can Benefit, the Largest Wage gains and to those at the Bottom of the workforce. Socialism is Seductive because everything is Promised Free but in Practice it is Ruled by a Few People who Deem themselves better than others and who Use Force to Impose their Will. If you look at History, you will See that Socialism and its Cousins Kill. Socialist does not Empower people they take by Force and Rule by Force and the End Result is Great Death and Destruction. A Few Examples… 12 Million Dead in Germany, 20 Million in the Soviet Union, 50-70Million in China a Third of the Population in Cambodia, no one Knows how many DISAPPEARED IN CUBA while five Million People Recently Fled from Venezuela from Poverty, Starvation, Repression and Death a country with the Highest Known Oil Reserves in the world.

BAJAN’S NEED TO BE AWARE THOSE THAT PROMISE FRESHNESS HAVE TO FIRST TAKE FROM THE WHOLE POPULATION WHAT THEY HAVE EARNED AND THEIR ASSETS WHILE RETAINING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FELLOW CRONIES AND THEN TRICKLING DOWN WHAT IS LEFT. IN SUCH A SITUATION, WE END UP WORKING FOR THE STATE THROUGH EXORBITANTLY HIGH TAXATION. WE THEREFORE BECOME INDENTURED TO THE STATE WITHOUT A RELEASE DATE. THAT MEANS YOUR WHOLE LIFE YOU SPEND WORKING FOR THE STATE RATHER THAN IMPROVING YOUR OWN LOT.

    LONG LIVE FREEDOM AND PROSPERITY!

  10. Sen. Lindsey Graham: “Impeachment ends if and when Trump is re-elected and Pelosi and Tlaib are fired”.

  11. The Democrat Iowa Caucus imploded last night. US TV networks went to great expense to prepare for the presentation of Caucus results, but the reporting system of the Iowa Democrat Party broke down so completely that no results were available for broadcast.

This is an example of the difficulty public sector organizations often have in meeting their objectives. Team Trump is reminding America that if the Democrats cannot successfully organize an election in a small state, they cannot be trusted to improve the massive US health care system by state intervention.

    Socialist medicine doesn’t work.

  12. @ Ewart:

Predictably, Trump pounced on the problems that the Iowa caucus organizers had in getting out their caucus results this past Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Even now the results are still trickling in, as Trump blames what he labels the “do-nothing” Democrats for incompetence, and argues illogically that if “they” (a small number) can’t handle a relatively small set of Iowa state caucuses, how can they manage the national economy and the national health care system.

However, Iowa and any fumbling by the Democrats there teaches any political observer/operative the need for a QUALIFIED RAPID RESPONSE TEAM TO ANSWER IMMEDIATELY TEAM TRUMP’S BOGUS ALLEGATIONS.

This is one reason why the late Lee Atwater, GHW Bush’s campaign manager, and a master of dirty tricks, was able to decimate Governor Michael Dukakis’s Presidential campaign, coupled with errors in the Dukakis campaign.

Similarly, the Clinton-Gore Rapid Response team was tasked with and typically able to refute GHW’s claims within the 24 hour news cycle. They were quite successful in helping defeat GHW Bush in his re-election campaign.

It is political malpractice for any political candidate involved in a serious election not to have a Rapid Response Team to answer wild allegations emanating from people like Trump. E.g Trump’s nonsense about “socialism” – the bogeyman for many Americans. Is Bloomberg ($52 bn) a “socialist”? Is Steyer ($37 bn) a “socialist”? Even millionaires like Governor Deval Patrick (Bain Capital) and other millionaires among the Democrats, what makes them “socialist(s)”? Duuuhhhhh!

In the final analysis, who knows the exact reasons for problems with the new apps which the Iowa caucus organizers have experienced?

But, just as Trump pre-emptively accused the Democrats of incompetence, the Democrats, based on Russian pattern and practice of hacking in the 2016 Presidential election (uncontested), the Iowans – without scare mongering and past American history of Joe McCarthy and Russians on the brain – would be equally justified in the prevailing climate, of raising the issue and calling for a prompt, comprehensive investigation as to possible Russian or “Ukrainian” interference into the Iowa 2020 caucuses.

It is not over until …..

  13. Later today, the U.S Senate votes on President Trump’s Impeachment. This is a historic event, the third such trial in U.S constitutional and political history.

Let us remember Mark Twain who reportedly once said that the only native criminal class in the United States was/is the Congress. Twain’s argument might well find support in the Senate’s decision later today to acquit Trump of the 2 charges in his impeachment trial.

The Republican majority swamp, featuring its usual suspects and customary swamp dwellers, e.g. Majority Leader “Moscow Mitch” as he is known to some progressives, and Lindsey Graham previously described by Trump as a “disgrace”, “a nut job”, and “one of the dumbest human beings”, along with other Senate Republicans, will predictably acquit Trump later today Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Just as POTUS’s excesses have brought the art of lying into disrepute, there seems to be no limits to the Republicans’ absolute subservience.

The Impeachment Trial has however been deeply flawed from the very start. American jurisprudence held that seeking the truth is a fundamental goal of any trial. To this end, a trial typically requires evidence submitted by way of sworn witnesses who usually testify, either from personal, direct, or expert knowledge, and are subject to direct and cross-examination; as well as relevant and material documents and exhibits admitted at trial.

The decision by the Senate Republican majority to prohibit the calling of the former national security advisor John Bolton and other witnesses, e.g. Mike Mulvaney as well as Lev Parnas, witnesses with direct, personal, first hand, relevant, material knowledge of the events at issue – Trump’s unlawful attempt to extort and bribe Ukrainian President Zelenskyy as a quid pro quo for already Congressionally approved military aid and a White House visit/meeting – shows that the fix was in early and the ultimate decision to acquit skewed and pre-determined.

Do not forget that McConnell, Senate majority leader, and Graham both stated before the trial that they intended to acquit Trump, that their defense would be closely aligned with the White House, making a grotesque mockery of their oath and their sworn duty to do “impartial justice”. They remind us of a juror in one of the late John Gotti’s prosecutions, which juror was subsequently convicted for accepting a bribe by the defense.

The Republican majority decision not to call witnesses and deny further probative evidence also flies in the face of standard trial practice, civil procedure, established and persuasive precedents, and American Jurisprudence. House Impeachment Manager, Val Demings detailed in her excellent presentations the numerous witnesses in previous Senate impeachment trials. This may well be the first trial in which the Senate has refused to call any witnesses.

But, while a win is always a win, acquittal by a simple Senate majority of 51 to 49, or 53 to 47 can NEVER provide an overwhelming mandate for any President’s agenda.

However, political chicanery by a slender Republican majority may well cause the Republicans to suffer serious losses in this year’s upcoming elections.

Nevertheless, based on the political landscape, Trump, remains a daunting opponent for the divided Democrats, even if he is essentially another greedy, vulture capitalist, a man of extraordinarily doubtful psychology, and a predator, capitalizing on historic divisions (e.g in matters of race, gender, disability and xenophobia) in American society.

In the final analysis, he will have made history as one of the few American Presidents to have been impeached, but history will not have absolved him of his impeachment.

‘Miscow Mitch” despises the alias but I suspect it’s better than ‘Piked Head Mitch’ or ‘Mitch the Con’… This is the man afterall you smiled broadly and said to effect that ‘Of Course’ he would appoint a SCOTUS judge during an end term lame duck period now because what he did to Justice Garland under Obama is irrelevant now!

‘Lindsey the Lizard’ has slithered along in the slimy swamp of this man’s making like the chameleon he is.

But as you highlighted dirty , self serving political trickery didn’t start with this presidential impostor …

Both Moscow and Lizard are political swamp creatures of the highest calibre so winning ‘by any means necessary’ is the creed… It’s not ethical or pretty and brushes the line of legality but they still control the levers of power and aim to do so for another 4 years hanging on this man’s coattails … and they will eat their own spawn, enshrine lying as the 11th commandment, ensure that hypocrisy is taught from kindergarten and shred legality to achieve that

@David, the first rule of public life: keep your pretty face in the NEWS , spin every ‘hit’ with your most grandiose chatter and you are assured to improve your popular appeal regardless of how grave the news!

A verse of wisdom from Sun Tzu or ‘The Prince’ may say it this way :

All men can see these tactics whereby I conquer, but he who becomes a Prince through the favor of the people using lies and deception should always stay on those terms with them; it keeps your subjects in awe of your supreme confidence.

Furthermore, when one is capable of thinking for oneself that is excellent but when one is able to understand the thinking and fears of your subjects and can manipulate it to your advantage that is MOST excellent; your reign will be much favored by those fawning masses and those who seek power to govern them.

  19. Although there is a long time in politics to go before the next presidential election, Trump seems to have his head in front. The Democrats have presented no serious contenders so far.

  20. @ Blogmaster:

Yes, but as the late U.K. Prime Minister used to say ” Twenty four hours is s long time in the life of a politician”.

I don’t know @David, a head in front does count at the finish line but as @Pilgrim suggests we are well away from that line!

And the only thing that will create more anger and flurried tweets of things like: ‘he begged me for the Sec of State job like the dog he is’ or maybe ‘Mad Mitt should be impeached himself … in the old days we would go to the grassy knoll on him’… is for a moderate Dem to vote to acquit!

Says Romney: “Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine.”

“The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the president committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a ‘high crime and misdemeanor’. Yes, he did.”

    As the blogger says, whaloss.

  23. The left somehow feels Trump is unaccountable because this tsunami of scandal coverage isn’t damaging his public standing. In fact, Gallup just found that “Trump’s job approval rating has risen to 49%, his highest in Gallup polling since he took office in 2017.” Since the start of the year, Trump’s approval is up 6 points among Republicans and 5 points among independents.

This leaves the overall impression that Trump has a very good chance of becoming the first president to be impeached and then reelected. That’s because this impeachment exercise was so transparently one-sided and partisan. And so was the press.

  25. Nancy Pelosi and the sisterhood of Democrat women in the US House of Representatives, dressed all in white, waged gender warfare against President Trump on Tuesday night.

Many of them heckled him loudly throughout his speech, and some walked out of the House chamber. Pelosi disgraced herself and the office she holds by refusing to use the deferential language that is customary when introducing the President to the joint session of Congress, and then by ostentatiously ripping up her copy of the President’s speech for the television cameras — because, she claimed, it was “full of lies”.

Feminism is the most poisonous ideology of our time, and when men outperform women at the polls, the result is often a prolonged display of spiteful and treacherous rebellion by defeated candidates (e.g., Hillary Clinton, Stacey Abrams) and their allies.

  27. People want to know how come Mitt could one day vote for more witnesses because the case was unproven and then turn around and vote as he did and claim the case was proven.

So he hates Trump …. so what.

Heard a suggestion that he throw his hat in the Democrat Primaries and see if he can’t save the Democrats who can’t run a caucus but want to run a country.

  28. de pedantic Dribbler Avatar

And other sane people want to know why Mitt who was the standard bearer for this same Republican party just over 8 years ago is now so hated….Why is there RDS for a man who proudly offers Republican principles like reduced budget deficits , something this POTUS dismisses …

But to correct your universe of unacceptable disinformation (also called lies) please note:

Sen Romney NEVER said he believed, thought or considered *”the the case was unproven”. The man said: “I think, with the story [about Bolton’s book] that came out […] it’s increasingly apparent that it would be important to hear from John Bolton.”

He suggested that he was leaning towards conviction based on the evidence but wanted to hear Bolton to determine if what he had to say was “relevant” as he “…had the hope that [Bolton] would be able to say something exculpatory and create reasonable doubt[…].”

After he opposed this man candidacy he then kowtowed and paraded himself at the President’s estate in NJ for a cabinet job interview that was NEVER going to happen.

Not the actions of a man filled with hate surely. Rather a man who governs on reason, party orthodoxcy and principle.

Other Republican also govern along those lines but came to a very different verdict… contrived, based on the EVIDENCE (and their own words) but politically prudent. It clearly shows a lack of spine and fear of being lambasted by the WH and losing their political power. In sum: having their head on a spike.

One Democrat Senator referenced a statement from a 2002 Senator (but bluntly referring to his current colleagues): *“We can act out of fear” or “we can stick to our principles.”

He said of this group: ‘In private, Republicans admit they acquitted Trump out of fear.’

And this is what a retiring Sen Alexander (no fear In his case, just amazing logic) said before he voted : ““…there is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven and that does not meet the United States Constitution’s high bar for an impeachable offense.”

So he clearly thinks it is PROVEN that “…the president asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son… [which he] said […] on television on October 3, 2019, and during his July 25, 2019, telephone call with the president of Ukraine. There is no need for more evidence to conclude that the president withheld United States aid, at least in part, to pressure Ukraine to investigate the BidensThe question then is not whether the president did it…”

The wise and venerable senior senator can make the DEFINITIVE statement that a sitting President subverted a congressional vote on national security for his PERSONAL gain but yet conclude its OK!

Alexander’s fabrications are nicely worded…just like Dershowitz…lots of flowing verbiage leading to incredullity.

How does one really argue against that style and type of incredible reasoning.

Here are excerpts which are examples of getting a valid, honest BIPARTISAN assessment from an investigation.

Senate Intel report Vol 3 of 5:

+“After discovering the existence, if not the full scope, of Russia’s election interference efforts in late-2016, the Obama Administration struggled to determine the appropriate response,” Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said in a statement. “Frozen by ‘paralysis of analysis,’ hamstrung by constraints both real and perceived, Obama officials debated courses of action without truly taking one.”

+“Sen. Mark Warner (Va.), the panel’s top Democrat, said there “were many flaws with the U.S. response to the 2016 attack, but it’s worth noting that many of those were due to problems with our own system.”

“I am particularly concerned however, that a legitimate fear raised by the Obama Administration — that warning the public of the Russian attack could backfire politically — is still present in our hyper-partisan environment.”

    And that’s the kicker.

When the Obama folks did act here is this admin investigating them for a supposedly false predication to launch …

Damned for doing and yet condemned for not doing !

    Screwed whatever u do!

  33. There are plenty of US government documents attesting to President Trump’s general reluctance to release the foreign aid voted by the Congress for various countries around the world, especially those like Ukraine with a reputation for intractable corruption.

It was reasonable for Trump to look for an excuse to delay or withhold the release of funds to Ukraine, and unfortunate but understandable that he ended up referencing known red flags about the corrupt Biden family in his phone call with the Ukrainian president. The Democrats are the bad guys for making a mountain out of a molehill.

I disagree, Bloomberg as he has the money to outspend Trump and the Americans worship money. BTW at the “Prayer Breakfast” what were Trump and the Evangelicals praying for or should that be “preying”. I am spending my spare time trying to come up with a system to monetize “hypocrisy”. I expect to join the billionaire ranks soon.

@Archer, you have advised us that you spent most of your career discharging wisdom to college students but based on some of your writings here it seems you – like many professors – often wandered off into illusory intellectual mumbo jumbo that did nothing but kerfufflled your students.

How in heaven’s name can you state with a straight face: “but understandable that he ended up referencing known red flags about the corrupt Biden family in his phone call with the Ukrainian president. The Democrats are the bad guys for making a mountain out of a molehill.”

Any president can condition aid based on any US national interest … because OF COURSE that’s WHY the aid is given: to further promote US requests/demands.

NO president can condition that aid for ANY personal beneficiary reason. NONE.

Six Republican senators said that is wrong … One actually followed the reasoning to it’s logical conclusion and voted guilty on that count.

If Joe Biden is corrupt so be it…but the POTUS CANNOT ask or demand that a foreign nation help him to confirm that… The legitimate US police authorities carry out THAT role.

We know from Nixon that a president CANNOT get involved in the political affairs of his opponent by putting his thumb on the scale of justice (or injustice).

One more time to repeat: the Feds had COMPLETED their review of the corrupt Ukraine leaders and had given the new team a stamp of approval as heading in the right direction out of the graft …POTUS did nothing more than take them right back in… the version of events that he was concerned about corruption generally is totally cow dung based on ALL the evidence…. so please stop with the intellectual BS, do!

  39. @ Blogmaster

Do you think, for one minute, that polls – like many others, I have never been polled – 8 to 9 months before the Nov 2020 elections, are that significant? If so, why?

HRC led in the polls up to the very day of the last Presidential election. The pollsters mostly if not all got it wrong,

  40. The bottomline is that the DEMS have no compelling candidate. Trump has a good change to win by default.

  41. LAST TIME HE WON BY DECEIT
THIS TIME HE WILL WIN BY DEFAULT?

WHAT EVER HE DOES HE CANT WIN LOL

  42. @ Ewart Archer February 6, 2020 5:18 PM

What word should she have chosen to describe the man’s appearance? Tranquilized?

You very well know that what took place was just a political pappyshow.

The unsound trumpeter has to be returned to the WH come November (DV).
How else can he be a “Great” president unless he engages in a full-scale war overseas instead of those silly ‘hit-and-run’ incursions in the ME which make him look like a mere bully in the playground.

He should declare war against China blaming them as the source of the virus which could turn America into a quarantine camp.

  43. @ Blogmaster &
    GP

Not yet! I fear we are being way ahead (too previous).

I seem to remember that Pres. GHWB led by an overwhelming majority in the polls after the Iraq War I, but not long after, he was defeated by a relatively young, unknown Arkansas Governor (whose only international experience- per Pat Buchanan- was that he and his running mate had had breakfasts in IHOP).

Ditto P.M Churchill, a British war hero and the Conservative Party defeat in the war’s immediate aftermath.

Who knows what will transpire in the next 8 to 9 months? (Especially given that Trump, like Bull Connor, is so easily baited, and can be led to explode, or is it eventually implode?)

  44. Dribbler

You keep overstating the case against Trump.

Trump did not DEMAND an investigation of the Bidens during his telephone call with the Ukrainian president. He merely URGED an investigation.

And he never told the Ukrainian president that the release of aid was dependent on a Biden investigation, or anything else. The Ukrainian president may never have been aware at the time of any aid conditions, and did not even find out for several weeks that the aid had been blocked. (It had been blocked before the call was made.)

American officials have given conflicting testimony about whether the release of the money depended on an investigation of the Bidens, or merely an announcement of a plan to investigate the Bidens. If the latter, no actual investigation was contemplated by Team Trump. But all of the talk about the reasons for suspending the aid was among the Americans. It did not involve the Ukrainians.

These details are important because they create some ambiguity about Trump’s motives for suspending the aid. In other words, the situation was much more complex than you have described.

@Archer, there are excellent timelines and detailed unbiased reporting on this Ukraine matter so if u care to step away from your right wing sources you can be properly updated .

First up I do not overstate. I always try to UNDERstate.

So to simplify here with no lotta long talk…

You are totally off based and the basic facts shout that out.

1.POTUS as early as July 2017 was publicly mouthing off about an investigation of the whodunnit re Ukraine involvement in his campaign and the takedown of Manafort.

2.Just a few months before that his attack dog Guiliani had already met with the then leaders in Ukraine.

3.Then in April 2018 Guiliani officially created the attorney -client secret bond with POTUS… Hint, hint.

4.And but a few months after that we had the now famous dinner meeting with POTUS and those henchmen he DIDNT know trying to get rid of the Ukraine ambassador. Wink, wink!

I’ll stop there and pivot to this.

When POTUS selected AG Whittaker one of the FIRST things he did (reported without denial in media) was to ask the AG to intervene with the NY Southern District office and have the Trump appointed US Attorney (who was a Tump friend and big campaign donor) to run the growing investigation into Trump business matters!

Whittaker could NOT ethically or practically do that… and didnt.

Before that POTUS had cussed badly because his first AG Sessions did not control the the FBI and then the Mueller investigation.

    My point is very simple.

Right in front of our eyes this man brazenly demands federal law enforcement officials who are loyal to him to bend the rules, the laws and ethics in order to protect him and when he uses the SAME playbook in Ukraine we act unawares…. Get real.

So u coming here with these bogus platitudes that he wasn’t making demands from the git-go is beyond hilarious.

The call was the end game play…NOT the beginning or middle… Guiliani, Parnas et al had long ago twisted arms and set the table…. as was clearly noted during House testimony by the Ambassadors and NSC officials.

You are not that stupid or naive so clearly you want to act as if u are ignorant and that this leopard has changed his orange hair… because clearly he cant change his deplorably spotty behaviour!

    Carry on smartly, senor.

  48. Here is a poll CBS did regarding the SOTU speech by Trump.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/state-of-the-union-2019-most-viewers-approved-of-trumps-sotu-address-cbs-news-poll/

Seems like most of America liked it.

Commonsense seems to suggest he may get close to 70% of the popular vote in November!!

82% of Independents favour the speech.

They may end up joining the 50% of voters who supported him in 2016.

Plus, for the moment the Dems seem to be in disarray!!

    Time will tell.

  49. Not much point in frigging with the Electoral College!!

  50. “They may end up joining the 50% of voters who supported him in 2016.”

Trump was the white backlash of the black face who did not know his place in the human race

65% of the 75% white majority voted for racist platform,
which was an improvement of the 60’s, 70’s racism

but whites win by cheating breaking rules,
whenever they lose they change the rules

Blacks are used on frontline in wars as they are they treated as the least valuable troops to lose
but the stone that the builder refuse shall be the head cornerstone

There is a phrase in news reporting that says something like 1 white death is worth 1000 asians or 10000 black deaths to be worthy of reporting, but I cannot remember the exact numbers that white news use in their golden rule
