Today, it is useful to understand the basic preparatory training for those who want to follow Jesus.

Jesus gave a set of commandments.  Some Christians found them challenging to follow, so they developed diverse and conflicting traditions about these commandments, including:

  • they should be followed;
  • they are optional;
  • they are a guide;
  • they are impossible to follow; and
  • their purpose is to show us how sinful we are, and our need for a savior.

However, rather than speculate about whether we should follow them or not, we should go to the first rule on interpreting the Bible – what does Jesus say about it?  If Jesus is silent on the matter, then we can go to other rules.

Jesus introduced His commandments by stating:

Whoever breaks the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:19)

Jesus ended His commandments by stating:

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I [Jesus] will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

It would seem that Jesus intended that that all of His followers should obey all of His commandments, which are included in what is popularly called, ‘the sermon on the mount’. A descriptive outline of this sermon follows. The details are provided in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapters 5 to 7.

  1. Expect to face challenging situations, so count the cost before making a commitment to follow Jesus. (Matthew 5:3-12)
  2. Be visible and effective in your obedience to God. (Matthew 5:13-16)
  3. Do the right thing, especially when there is no expectation of a reward. (Matthew 5:17-20)
  4. Maintain good relationships with others, and reconcile quickly with your adversaries. (Matthew 5:21-26)
  5. Do not sin in thoughts, words, or deeds. (Matthew 5:27-30)
  6. Be faithful to your spouse. (Matthew 5:31-32)
  7. Tell the truth always, regardless of the consequences. (Matthew 5:33-37)
  8. Submit to everyone and trust God. (Matthew 5:38-42)
  9. Love your enemies. (Matthew 5:43-48)
  10. Do charitable deeds in secret. (Matthew 6:1-4)
  11. Cultivate a relationship with God, your heavenly Father, and genuinely forgive everyone who hurts you. (Matthew 6:5-15)
  12. When fasting, do not make it obvious to others. (Matthew 6:16-18)
  13. Let your principal security be in heaven. (Matthew 6:19-21)
  14. Do not be distracted with things that can cause you to lose your way. (Matthew 6:22-23)
  15. Trust God for your security, rather than trusting in your wealth, or your ability to generate wealth. (Matthew 6:24)
  16. Do not worry about anything, but first seek God’s kingdom and righteousness. (Matthew 6:25-34)
  17. Do not attempt to correct others while you are struggling with the same challenges. (Matthew 7:1-5)
  18. Wisely share information with those who lack understanding. (Matthew 7:6)
  19. Treat others the way that you want to be treated. (Matthew 7:7-12)
  20. Stay on the responsible path, even when you have little company. (Matthew 7:13-14)
  21. Beware of counterfeit leaders – you will recognize them by their irresponsible behaviour, which they cannot stop doing. (Matthew 7:15-20)
  22. It is not only acknowledging Jesus as Lord that will allow you to enter the Kingdom, but by practicing these commandments. (Matthew 7:21-23)
  23. If you obey these sayings, then you will be stable, otherwise, you will be unstable during challenging times. (Matthew 7:24-27)

Jesus commanded His followers to obey both the letter and spirit of the law. Jesus did this by contrasting His commandments with those given by Moses and Jewish tradition, for example.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. (Matthew 5:21b, 22)

Jesus’ commandments not only instruct believers to avoid doing what is wrong, but to proactively do what is right, motivated by love.

Many of these commandments appear to be contrary to our natural tendencies.  However, we normally improve at doing whatever we practice. Therefore, with persistent practice, this behaviour can become habitual.  Enjoy your improvement journey.

  1. THIS MONDAY SERMON – BASIC PREPARATORY TRAINING, EFFECTIVELY DEMONSTRATES THE PATH TO PERFECTION IN KEEPING THE COMMANDMENTS AS OBSERVED IN THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT AND NOTABLY DEMONSTRATES AS FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SHARE ETERNAL TRUTHS…

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matt. 5:48)…

Coming unto Christ is the only way back to the presence of the Father. That is why the Savior’s invitations to us include: “Come, follow me” (Luke 18:22), “Learn of me” (Matt. 11:29), “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).

The Way to come unto Christ is through Obedience to the Principles taught in the Commandments. For each of us to ‘come unto Christ,’ to keep His commandments and follow His example back to the Father is surely the highest and holiest purpose of human existence. To help others do that as well—to teach, persuade, and prayerfully lead them to walk that path of redemption also—surely that must be the second most significant task in our lives.

Perfection is an eternal goal, not an earthly possibility. It is, however, a commandment that can, over time and because of the Atonement. I believe the Lord meant just what he said: that we should be perfect, as our Father in heaven is perfect Matt. 5:48). That will not come all at once, but line upon line, and precept upon precept, example upon example, and even then, not as long as we live in this earthly life, for we will have to go even beyond the grave before we reach that perfection.

But here we lay the foundation. Here is where we are taught these simple truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ, in this provisional state, to prepare us for that perfection. It is our duty to be better today than we were yesterday, and better tomorrow than we are today. Why? Because … if we are keeping the commandments of the Lord, we are on that road to perfection, and that can only come through obedience and the desire in our hearts to overcome the world.

IT IS THE DUTY OF EVERY MAN TO TRY TO BE LIKE HIS ETERNAL FATHER.

The Sermon on the Mount is perhaps the most significant testimony of our Lord ever recorded. It is a BLUEPRINT FOR PERFECTION. It is a Revelation of His own character, which was perfect thus making it a “BLUEPRINT FOR OUR OWN LIVES.” The Sermon on the Mount is essentially an invitation from the Redeemer of all mankind to come and watch Him, listen to His words, do what we see Him do, learn of Him, and receive eternal life.

WHY THEN ARE MORE PEOPLE OR ALL PEOPLE NOT DOING THESE THINGS?
    WHAT DOES ROMANS 4:4-5 MEAN?

  4. REMEMBER WHEN AS BOYS WE WANTED TO GROW UP AND SING THE TENOR OR BASS IN THIS HYMN

  5. JUST SUPPLYING HYMNS AND ANTHEMS TO GO WITH THE MORNING SERMON

  6. DID YOU ALL KNOW THAT WORDS OF THE TE DEUM LAUDAMUS ARE SCRIPTURAL?

  7. Why is it that aspiring Bishops and priests, pastors and deacons find it so hard to obey these basic commonsense instructions themselves but rather do not practice what they preach and in so doing causing the youth to lose faith in righteousness

  8. CHARLES
IN THE NT WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BISHOP AND A PASTOR?
HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THAT “these basic commonsense instructions” WERE GIVEN FOR THE KINGDOM?
    WHEN WILL THE KINGDOM OCCUR/
IN WHAT DISPENSATION WAS THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT GIVEN? TO WHOM? WHY?

DONT YOU THINK THAT the youth lose faith in righteousness BECAUSE THEY DONT SEEK AFTER righteousness

  9. What a wonderful selection of hymns GP to usher in a glorious morning and what in your view could be responsible for aspiring Bishops and priests and pastors and deacons unable to follow these basic commonsense truths but rather prefer not to practice what they preach thereby causing a generation of youth to turn away from righteousness

  10. “DONT YOU THINK THAT the youth lose faith in righteousness BECAUSE THEY DONT SEEK AFTER righteousness”

AS A YOUTH I AM SURE YOU DID NOT SEEK RIGHTEOUSNESS BLINDLY BUT THROUGH EXAMPLE

ACTUALLY I WAS ALWAYS KEEN ABOUT SUCH MATTERS FROM THE TIME MY GRANNY TOOK ME TO CHURCH AT PATRONAL FESTIVAL AT ST PAUL’S

ONE OF MY FIRST AMBITIONS IN LIFE WAS TO BE A CHOIR BOY

LATER I LEARNED TO STUDY THE WORD IN THE BAPTIST CHURCH

I LEARNED THAT I WAS A SINNER BECAUSE I HAD A SIN NATURE
I LEARNED THAT JESUS DIED FOR MY SINS
    AND IT WENT FROM THERE

I AM HAPPY FOR MY PROGRESSION

I HAVE NEVER FOLLOWED ANY PRIEST OR PASTOR…….I HAVE TENDED TO FOLLOW THE WORD
    BUT I AM NOT PERFECT

  14. Two beautiful inspiring hymns. The doors of the Anglican Church are still open to you. Feel free to walk back in anytime.
    WHY?
WHAT WILL I LEARN NOW THAT I DIDNT LEARN FROM AGE 6 -16?
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANYONE TEACH BIBLE LIKE IN THE SWEET SUNDAY SERMONS IN THE ANGLICAN CHURCH? I DIDNT LEARN THAT IN THE ANGLICAN CHURCH. I ONLY LEARNED HYMNS AND HYMN TUNES AND LOVELY ANTHEMS

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD ANYONE EXPLAIN THIS PASSAGE FROM ROMANS 1O IN THE ANGLICAN CHURCH?

5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

    8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  16. HOW CAN YOU FOLLOW JESUS AND BE PERFECT IF YOU DONT KNOW HIM AND YOU NEVER LET HIM INTO YOUR HEART?

  17. THIS ONE IS BASED ON HEBREWS 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

    19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

  20. These sermons – Monday, Tuesday whatever the flavour, are very entertaining. It looks like the place where everyone gets to show off how much scripture and hymns he/she knows and pat himself or herself on the back.

If I were an unbeliever, especially, a young unbeliever, I would be asking myself:

Are these guys for real? Is this what Christianity is about? Is Christianity relevant to today’s problems? Can It help me cope with the pressures of life? Rid myself of habits and addictions? Why should I become A Christian? Is it for quinqa-,sexa- and septuagenarians. Would I be better off being a Muslim?

    And on and on!

IN THE OTHER I ASKED THE MAN WITH NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS TO EXPLAIN HIMSELF BY ASKING POINTED QUESTIONS

  29. VINCENT , DAVID & OTHER BIBLE ILLITERATES

HERE IS SOMETHING YOU MUST LEARN FROM 2 PETER 3

16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

THOSE that are unlearned and unstable wrest, the scriptures,
BUT ONE MUST NOT be led away with the error of the wicked, & fall from your own stedfastness.

INSTEAD ONE MUST grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ

ONE CAN NOT TEACH A SUBJECT THAT THEY HAVE NOT LEARNED

  30. Charles:

There is a reason why Jesus warned his followers about false teachers. Jesus asked His followers to teach only one thing. Hear Jesus on what that is.

“teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you”. (Matthew 28:20)

Many religious leaders have not been through Jesus’ required basic training. Instead, they replaced it with academic training. Therefore, they cannot overcome temptations to do wrong. Hear Peter’s warning shortly before he was martyred.

“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies”. (2 Peter 2:1)

Hear Peter’s description of them, for our benefit.

“For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” (2 Peter 2:20-22)

Those who completed Jesus’ basic training to prepare them for leadership, normally encourage others to do the same.

Those who reject Jesus’ basic training and pursue leadership only through the academic route, tend to mislead those whom they lead, that Jesus’ commandments should not be followed now. Jesus has already judged this matter.

  31. Vincent, David, adn others seeking the Truth:

Please note that Peter was mainly referring to the letters of Paul, which tended to contain some complex ideas.

Jesus’ ideas were simple, and easy to understand when read with a fair degree of common sense. Note that Jesus asked His followers to simply teach others what He had taught them.

  32. Ironside:

From the article, the young believer would understand Jesus’ basic training requirements.

From the subsequent comments, the young believer would simply be exposed to two opposite approaches to commenting.

  33. GRENVILLE FILLUPS

RE Those who reject Jesus’ basic training and pursue leadership only through the academic route, tend to mislead those whom they lead, that Jesus’ commandments should not be followed now. Jesus has already judged this matter.

PLEASE KINDLY IDENTIFY THE SCRIPTURES WITH “Jesus’ basic training”

WHO IS HERE pursuING leadership only through the academic route OR PERSUING LEADERSHIP AT ALL?
IS IT NOT YOU THAT IS PERSUING LEADERSHIP IN BARBADOS, BUT WITH NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS?

WHO ON BU HAS SAID THAT Jesus’ commandments should not be followed

RE Those who completed Jesus’ basic training to prepare them for leadership, normally encourage others to do the same.
WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THIS BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM TO PREPARE PEOPLE FOR LEADERSHIP?

WHO TEACHES THE COURSE? WHERE? DO YOU GET A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION?

HOW CAN ONE encourage others to TAKE THIS BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM TO PREPARE PEOPLE FOR LEADERSHIP IF THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE?

IS THIS BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM ONLY FOR WOULD BE LEADERS?
WHY IS IT THAT AFTER TAKING THIS BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM FOR WOULD BE LEADERS, THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS?

RE Jesus asked His followers to teach only one thing. Hear Jesus on what that is. “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you”. (Matthew 28:20)
DOES THIS MEAN THAT THIS IS ALL THAT IS TAUGHT IN THE BASIC TRAINING COURSE FOR LEADERS YOU SEEM TO HAVE TAKEN? OR ARE THEY OTHER THINGS IN THE BIBLE TO BE LEARNED?

RE Many religious leaders have not been through Jesus’ required basic training.
PLEASE KINDLY NOTE THAT I AM NOT NOW, OR HAVE NEVER BEEN A RELIGIOUS LEADER ANYTIME ANYWHERE

RE Instead, they replaced it with academic training. I STUDIED THE WORD FORMALLY BECAUSE I LOVE TO DO SO.
DID YOU NOT GET ACADEMIC TRAINING? IS ACADEMIC TRAINING ONLY SINFUL WHEN IT IS DONE IN BIBLE?

RE Therefore, they cannot overcome temptations to do wrong. PLEASE KINDLY NOTE THAT ALL MEN ARE TEMPTED TO SIN AND DO SO. THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS TEMPTED BUT YET WITHOUT SIN IS JESUS

RE But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies”. (2 Peter 2:1)

NO ONE HAS BROUGHT IN ANY DESTRUCTIVE HERESY HERE
I HAVE ONLY SAID REPEATEDLY. THAT SOLUTIONS BARBADOS HAS NO SOLUTIONS FOR BARBADOS

I WILL SAY THIS UNTIL YOU PROVE ME WRONG

RE Jesus’ ideas were simple, and easy to understand when read with a fair degree of common sense.
THE TEACHING OF PAUL WERE ALSO VERY SIMPLE and easy to understand when read with a fair degree of common sense.

EG ROMANS 1 SAYS THAT THE GENTILES SINNED

ROMANS 2 SAYS THAT THE JEWS SINNED

ROMANS 3 REASONABLY AND LOGICALLY CONCLUDES THAT ALL HAVE SINNED

ROMANS 4 TEACHES THAT FOLK WHO HAVE SINNED CAN BELIEVE GOD AND BECOME RIGHTEOUS AS ABRAHAM DID OR AND THEY CAN CONFESS THEIR SINS LIKE DAVID DID

ROMANS 5 TEACHES THAT ON SO DOING ONE IS JUSTIFIED AND STAND IN GOD’S GRACE

    EAST EASY EASY SO

RE Note that Jesus asked His followers to simply teach others what He had taught them

SO WHY IN ACTS 2.42 WE READ THAT JESUS FOLLOWERS ” continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

DID THEY DO THIS BEFORE OR AFTER THEY ATTENDED A BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM FOR LEADERS

    (2) Many religious leaders have not been through Jesus’ required basic training. Instead, they replaced it with academic training. Therefore, they cannot overcome temptations to do wrong.

    And from your substantive post:
    (3) Today, it is useful to understand the basic preparatory training for those who want to follow Jesus. Jesus gave a set of commandments etc

In summary sir, it seems to me that you are preaching another gospel! Let me explain:

    +++Prescription to follow Jesus+++

Your prescription for people to prepare to follow Jesus is entirely erroneous. As I understand it, Jesus’ position is that you must be “born again” to even enter the kingdom of heaven, far less follow Him. It is all there in John chapter 3, that famous passage from which only verse 16 is remembered. The conversation starts out with Yeshua’s conversation with Nicodemus [A leader of the people, please note]:

(Yeshua speaking) “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again”. Berean Study Bible v.3

You err considerably because human nature will not get better by trying to practice the commandments! That is humanistic legalism a.k.a “religion”. incidentally, I now understand why you are so addicted to ISO 9000 as a solution to Barbados’ problems!

Listen, sir: the Adamic nature that we inherited cannot be redeemed:

“Because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: It does not submit to God’s Law, NOR CAN IT DO SO [emphasis mine]. Those controlled by the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8:7- 8, Paul speaking).

Your prescription is like putting a rotting fruit into the refrigerator with the expectation that that will halt or reverse the rot!

In contrast, Jehovah’s solution is the “death” of this old Adamic (carnal) nature and a radical change from within called the “new birth”.

You err regarding the purpose of the commandments:

“And so the Law was in charge of us until Christ came, in order that we might then be put right with God through faith.
Galatians 3: 24 Good News Translation

Personally I like the New King James 2000 Version:

“Therefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified BY FAITH [emphasis mine].”

If you have not got it yet, here is Paul again:

Know that a man is NOT [emphasis mine] justified by works of the Law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and NOT [emphasis mine] by works of the Law, because by works of the Law NO ONE [emphasis mine] will be justified. Galatians 2:16 New International Version

    You Are Teaching Another Gospel!

Finally here is Paul speaking to the Galatians again. He was responding to the idea that some Jews were telling the converted Galatians that they needed to go back to observing the demands of the Mosaic Law.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, LET HIM BE UNDER GOD’S CURSE! [emphasis mine].
    Galatians 1: 6 – 8 New International Version

    Check yourself, sir!

  45. So much rambling..so many picking from chapters and verses what please there selfish intellect
Jesus words supersedes above all others words
Jesus principles directs all into a simplistic way of life
Jesus summarize the ten commanments into two commands making it easy for all to understand and to follow
Paul expound in his teachings things which would glorify and please God as principles for the Christain walk with Christ.
