I’m to ask and every right thinking person must be wondering: in whose interest is the Mia Mottley Administration managing the affairs of this country?

I would not be so silly to suggest that previous administration left this country in good order.  And I would be the first to admit that the new administration needed to take measures to restructure and stabilise the economy.  But so far, the measures imposed by this new labour party administration has shown a merciless disregard for the plight of the most vulnerable in this society.  As promised, the Government removed the much vilified National Society Responsibility Levy (NSRL), which was collected from the merchant class up front, and replaced it with a series of punitive measures that took particular aim at the poor and labouring classes in the country.

This country is badly in need of revenue and the Government seems content to raise the necessary funds to run the country by taxing the people that a labour party was philosophically set up to protect.  On the other hand, this administration has moved swiftly to ensure that its friends and family are protected from the ravages of this marauding tax collecting machine that came into power on May 25, 2018.

This administration has even placed a tax on water, while at the same time forgiving the billions of dollars in income taxes that were owed mainly by the merchant class, who fund election campaigns, and by their close friends and family.

Last December the Government introduced and passed an amendment to the Income Tax Act to write off taxes that were owed by persons between 1968 and 2000.  The cynical among us, including me, believe that this was a measure aimed at giving tax relief to the Prime Minister’s father.

The country did not cry out about that atrocity and that has emboldened the Government to prepare legislation that would write off the Value Added Tax (VAT) that was collected and stolen by VAT registrants between 1996 and 2000.  The furniture store, Courts, is set to receive a write off of the principal sum of $35 million not included interest and penalties, that will also be written off by this legislation.

Lord, the people of this country prayed for a change but if they only knew what they would have gotten.  I am reminded of what my grandmother would say:  BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PRAY FOR, YOU MIGHT GET IT.

The amendment bill is attached.

  1. My goodness. The VAT is not the government’s to write off. It belongs to the poor people who paid it. This government is a government for the rich and elites. Heaven help the poor Bajans. I almost cried when I read about the sewer tax added to the water bill. The majority of Bajans are are on septic tanks or wells. Yet the poor in the country who cant get water have to pay this added tax. Now the Madam want us in the diaspora to gather so she can fleece us too.

  2. And one can bet that the Mottley’s and her associates would benefit
I do remeber hearing Mia stated that the law firm with which she is an associate owed taxes
It would be of interest to know how much they owed.
    Well so much for transparency
The rich filled their bellies off the govt coffers and the poor must walk barfeet skin teet and be contented
Btw wuh happen to the Unions
Ever since May 24 th they have gone to sleep
Maybe it is about time Caswell give them a wake up call
Mia was not elected but selected by a group of Capitalist bandits to do their bidding after Stuart became stubborn and remained steadfast in his will not to tow their line
These are a bunch of ruthless conservatives who could not care less about the social enviroment of a country

  3. And this is to be added to the lowering of corporation tax rates to next to nothing? I heard her saying that this is to be revenue neutral. There are rumblings that she may be looking to increase VAT or reduce the no. of items in the vat free basket of goods. Revaluation of properties for land taxes has already begun. If she is looking to increase land taxes it had better not be on poor people’s properties. Bus fares are going up quite sharply according to the minister. This woman would have to be looking for riots if she squeezes the poor any more than she already has while easing the rich over and over again.

Please read sweetie Caswell account of the very thing I highlighted in ”Is the Prime Minister of Barbados looking out for all” and my bone of contention over the tax amnesty. Mottley is rogue and the several major decisions she has made so far, the main one being the tax amnesty is intended to put to rest the concerns of her father and those friends and business affiliates who no longer have to worry about prosecution. She also has just bought all their loyalties in this scratch ma back move That means all of them are now part of the I OWE YOU or I own you rogue-works machinery.

  5. Dame Bajans,

i believe it is the interest and penalties that she is looking to write off. That would still amount to the businesses borrowing our money at 0 % interest rate since they had the use of it and we didn’t. I did not consent to offering them an interest-free loan. Every loan I have had I paid heaps of interest on.

The ruse is going to be that they are looking to encourage speedy payment of the principal amount but that does not fly with me since they can demand payment regardless.

@Caswell? “write off taxes that were owed by persons between 1968 and 2000.”

Truly no government was able to collect those 1960’s taxes. If they could have, they would have, not so?

Since no government “B”/”D” was able or willing to collect what was the point of keeping those taxes on the books?

But “yes” government/BRA has to do a better job of collecting taxes as they become due. because if a person can’t pay one year’s taxes, how will hey be able to pay two, or three, or ten or twenty years worth?

Taxes due, today, this week, this month. Collect today, this week, this month. Don’t even look at the the names of people who owe. Just collect.

The Americans/the IRS give their tax compliance officers guns, and the training to use them.

All power comes out of the barrell of a gun.

Maybe we need to empower BRA’s officers.

I bet that Bajans wouldn’t “F” around if they knew that an armed tax compliance officer was on her way (or his way) to collect.

Instead both parties have pulled the teeth of BRA. Emasculated BRA.

    Instead of arming BRA.

So..protect yourselves, stay away…and spread the word in the diaspora…she cannot be allowed to get away with this…not in this era.

Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Njagua THE STAR

    FacebookTwitterWhatsAppFacebook MessengerEmail
Starehe Member of Parliament Charles Kanyi Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar, is proposing the death penalty for leaders who will be found guilty of engaging in corruption.

On his Facebook page, Jaguar stated that young parliamentarians were going to sponsor a motion in Parliament to amend the Anti-corruption Act 2011.

Currently, the penalties for corruption offences provide a fine not exceeding Ksh1 Million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years or both.

    Starehe MP Charles Njagua
The young parliamentarians feel the penalty is lenient and will petition a motion to change it to a death penalty for anyone involved in corruption cases.

If the motion is passed, the MPs want the death penalty to start with Cabinet Secretaries who will be found guilty of misusing public monies.”

What happened in the first three years when these persons and businesses were not paying taxes. This is bare shite. Both political parties showed clearly that they sanction this and permitted it to continue under their watch. Bare shite I tell ya. Bare shite.

It is time to ARM the tax collecting agency officers with guns, there is no way that VAT should have been written off when the businesses collected the money at their points of sale and STOLE IT instead of turning it in to government…that is grand theft.

But then ya will get the ….they said and the other they said…with bribery being the common denominator.

Yo Caswell…ah don’t think the US is too pleased…all that money given to one or the other tag team government to fight the drugs and guns crimewave…there should have been multiple cameras throughout the port…years now and most ..TRAINED ON CUSTOMS OFFICERS…to see what many get up to…

…..there should have been at least 5 scanners at the port ..,all maintained and in consistent working order to scan the multiple containers arriving weekly thtough the port…but none of that ever happened did it…we dont even want to know who tief all that money belonging to US…we just want to hear them all admit like the COP has been saying for quite a while…that the drugs, guns and stolen car parts come right through the ports, including charles and ferdinand….with the blessings of many..in the parliament.

Your problem is that you have an inestimable confidence in the humanoid. Maybe its the only way you know. However, we have gone through this same cycle many, many, many times previously. The outcomes were long pellucid!

It should have been clear, given the external environments and even internal conditions, that the promises to protect ‘the vulnerable’ could not have been keep. For Mottley had very few options, within the capitalist system to extract more surplus from the poor. And, her government acting as agent for the rentier class, would have increased that extraction. Such is the nature of financial imperialism. Poor MAM has had no choice.

You may want to tell us where the IMF or international finance ever cared about the poor, the vulnerable. Just give us one example.

THOSE WHO WOULD SEEK TO REWRITE THE RECENT HISTORY OF THE DLP BY EITHER CUSSING MOTTLEY OR GIVING THE IMPRESSION THAT THINGS WERE NOT AS BAD AS THEY ACTUALLY WERE SHOULD RECALL ANY MODICUM OF HONESTY STILL IN THEIR RESERVES.

Notwithstanding, we maintain that your heart is in the right place and somebody has be hopeful. Unfortunately, that remit falls to you.

  29. @Pacha

    There is no easy fix.

All roads lead to a lack of leadership at the household level.

An apathy regarding citizen involvement on our governance setup.

  30. MAM has been implementing socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor. Just like the DLP.

  31. David

Yes, we agree. And you have always tried to be honest about circumstances. On that, we will always defend you.

We however, as you would expect, disagree that any other leadership culture could have produced any different results. We need to go deeper than that.

  32. What a government, what a disgrace? Will there be anything left after a further four years? We need an individual or organisation to carefully list every fiscal policy of this government. The numbers will be important in four years’ time.

At this trajectory we would now expect the Bajans to make another fateful leap into the fire of the DLP next time around.

We’re hoping that there is a sensibility that something is very wrong with that political culture. A culture that is likely to produce, for the dead DLP, a result next time of 30-0, in their favour!

  44. Sir William Skinner

David, as moderator, has to be the one who tries to investigate whether the centre could hold.

For us that is a highly reasonable expectation. We have never found him to be adverse to conceding or admitting defeat when the evidence is thusly presented.

When it comes to ‘severing’, we have long been calling for a kind which is too drastic for most. And always, for both sides. Even third parties too. Other elites like COW.

We all have our political ‘proclivities’. His are no less relevant than others. We have seen him support the status quo in the early days of the DLP. Have seen that position shifted to wanting a change last time around. Maybe next time he will want a change again. His choice though ill-advised.

You of all people should understand the deep-rooted culture of a duopoly. If David has determined that a third party is unlikely or is inviable he certainly cannot be blamed for acceptance of the present political culture, as a given. That is his choice. We rend to think differently.

If the DLP runs the country so far into the ground, is it not unreasonable to expect that most would seek help from where ever it may come from. Especially, if a good ‘story’ is sold.

The only martyrs we recognize, in the context of Barbados, are Bussa and those from the events of 1939. For us, there can never be an alternative to death which comes in fighting for the people, period! War.

There is nobody here who has interrogated the prevailing orthodoxy more than this writer. We certainly don’t see David as any apologist. And there are many here. But he’s not one.

  45. @Donna:
From what Caswell has posted, it is the taxes, penalties and interest:

“This Bill would amend the Value Added Tax Act, Cap. 87 to provide, among
other things, for a write-off of certain outstanding tax and of penalties and interest
incurred in respect of arrears of tax.”

Caswell attached a copy of the proposed bill. This is the description of the Bill on the cover page.

  46. @Vincent

We can agree but institutions develop cultures that if left unchecked overwhelm the capacity to refresh itself and they cease to be relevant to the mandate it was meant to serve.

From your vast knowledge, could you adumbrate where societies have so renewed without some type of cataclysm.
