    Battleground-state Dems who opposed Kavanaugh all defeated
    By Maxim Lott

    Incumbent Senate Democrats in battleground states who opposed the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination appeared to have paid a price on Election Day, with senators Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Indiana’s Joe Donnelly, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Florida’s Bill Nelson all suffering defeat.

    In fact, every Democrat incumbent who opposed Kavanaugh in states rated “toss up” by Fox News lost their race. In contrast, the lone Democrat who voted for Kavanaugh, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, won his race.

    “Every Dem Senator in a competitive race who voted against Kavanaugh lost,” tweeted Tom Bevan, Co-founder of RealClearPolitics. Fox News polling offered evidence the Kavanaugh issue was a major problem for those battleground incumbent Democrats.

    A Fox News poll from early October, just before the Kavanaugh confirmation vote, found 34 percent of North Dakotans said they would be less likely to vote for Heitkamp if she voted against Kavanaugh, with just 17 percent saying it would make them more likely to vote for her.

    In Missouri, among the 28 percent of voters who said they could still switch candidates, almost twice as many said they’d be less likely to support McCaskill if she opposed Kavanaugh.

    In Indiana, a Fox News poll found 32 percent said they would be less likely to vote for Braun if he voted against Kavanaugh, compared to 30 percent who would be more likely.

    Sen. Manchin got grief for his vote for Kavanaugh, and was shouted at by protestors with chants of “shame!” One reporter asked him: “Do you think there’s still a place for you in the Democratic Party after this?”

    Manchin replied by saying, “I’m just a West Virginian.”

    Manchin also came under fire from his Republican opponent for waiting to announce his vote until after the Republicans had already secured enough votes. Many speculated that had been the deciding vote, he would have gone against Kavanaugh.

    But he survived that charge.

    The other incumbents Democrats took a different tack. Heitcamp told CNN she had been ready to support Kavanaugh until she heard his testimony. “I saw somebody who was very angry, who was very nervous,” she said.

    Donnelly came out with a more full-throated statement. “As I have made clear before, sexual assault has no place in our society,” he said. “When it does occur, we should listen to the survivors and work to ensure it never happens again.”

    Lindsey Graham, who was outspoken in condemning what he saw as unfair treatment of Kavanaugh during the hearings — he told Senate Democrats “God you all want power. I hope you never get it — chimed in on the subject Tuesday night.

    “One of the reasons we are winning big in the Senate tonight is because of the way Democrats treated Brett Kavanaugh,” he tweeted.

    Gains for the Democratic Party in Tuesday’s “must win” election were well-below historic averages for a minority political party. While Pelosi has made it clear that she has no intention of stepping aside as House Speaker, the reality is she may have no choice.

    Pelosi barely won her reelection to the speaker position in 2016. Since then, her popularity has only declined.

    “At least 12 of the new House Democrats have made statements critical of Pelosi on the campaign trail, ranging from a general call for new leadership to a firm refusal to support her election as speaker,” The Washington Post reported Wednesday. “Seven more Democratic candidates in that category are running in races yet to be called.”

    The IRS has investigated Trump for decades!!!

    Like Mueller, although over a far longer period, they have found zip.

    Is Pelosi saying the IRS is incompetent and she Pelosi will get to the bottom of their incompetence?

    Incidentally, her lot under Obama set the same IRS on conservatives and anyone who opposed them, probably why they audited Trump for decades.

    For those gloating over the Senate ‘win’ for the GOP,it is the combination of gerrymandering the polling districts and the 200 year old constitution that allowed 50% of urban America to send 20% of Senators to D.C. while the other 50% in rural(read ignorant redneck plaid shirt wearing white American)send 80% of the Senate to D.C..Think of that stupiditity.The GOP changed the rules to benefit from a onesided contest.One half of the city and urban heavily populated American dwellers have 20 Senators to represent them while the remaining 80% in rural and sparsely populated America get to send 80 senators to represent their interests.This state of affairs will end after the 2020 presidential elections so do not expect change until 2022.

    40 or 45 Republicans, eg Paul Ryan, resigned their seats in the house.

    Normally, 98% of incumbents will win a reelection.

    Had they stayed, the house would be Republican.

    I am not sure if the Democrats won their 20 odd majority or if the Republicans gave it away!!!

    Why would they give it away?

    1.Retirements are a standard feature every new congress…in this case surely many repubs resigned because a) they feared just this defeat and did not want to be in the minority again, b) the rotation system of seniority would have seen some losing status even in victory and c) for change of scene, seeking new challenges, to make more money or whatever. POINT is …its NORMAL.

    Back n Obama’s blood bath of 2010 the Repubs gained over 60 House seats in that midterm election. There were 37 RETIREMENTS…20 of whom were Repubs….in 2012 some 41 retired.

    So NO…they could not just ‘stay this year’ because you wanted them too…and absolutely no guarantee that would have made a jot of difference…didn’t you read about the congressman Brat who took out the other big wig leader Cantor in 2010 and who got badly DEFEATED himself yesterday despite the major backing from his boy POTUS!
