Johnson and Johnson, the American company that manufactures Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder — a product that is sold in Barbados and used extensively by Barbadian women and children — has been hit with a US $4.69 Billion judgment in a law suit in which 22 women (and their families) claimed that asbestos in the company’s talcum powder products caused them to develop ovarian cancer.

According to the New York Times newspaper, the judgment — comprising US $4.14 Billion in punitive damages and US $550 Million in compensatory damages — was handed down by a Jury in the Missouri Circuit Court on Thursday 12th July 2018.

The 22 female Plaintiffs had specifically accused the company of failing to warn them about cancer risks associated with its baby and body powders.

The New York Times article also revealed that the company is facing some 9,000 other Plaintiffs in a number of law suits across the United States !

The question that arises for us in Barbados is : Who is informing the women and children of Barbados about these developments and looking out for their interests?

And since we know that many many Barbadian women and children literally lather themselves with Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder, we need to inquire whether any Barbadian females might have developed ovarian cancer from use of this product.  And, if this is the case, we then need to determine what can be done to ensure that they receive the financial compensation that would be due to them.

If there are Barbadian victims, who will assist them to mount a similar class action law suit against this American multi-national corporation?

Way back in 1981, the Government of  Barbados established an agency known as the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) to maintain proper consumer product standards in our country and to protect our people in matters of this nature.

In addition, in 2003 our Government enacted a Consumer Protection Act and gave the relevant government Minister  the power (after consulting with the BNSI) to make regulations for the purpose of protecting Barbadian consumers from such defective and health-destroying products.

Thus, we Barbadian people are entitled to ask why we have not heard from our BNSI on this matter up to now.

Surely, the Court case in Missouri must have been based on credible scientific evidence and must have been going on for some considerable time before last Thursday’s verdict. In this age of Information Technology, does the BNSI or any other local regulatory agency monitor these types of developments internationally? And if so, why have they not alerted the Barbadian people to the cancer causing danger associated with this very popular product ?

And — most importantly — when is this product going to be banned from Barbados?

  1. Health risk issues
In December 1985 two physicians urged parents not to use baby powder, stating that it was unsafe to inhale and Johnson & Johnson responded with an official statement that “product is safe when used as it is intended”.[38]

In February 2016, J&J was ordered to pay $72 million in damages to the family of Jackie Fox, a 62-year-old woman who died of ovarian cancer in 2015. She had used Johnson’s Baby Powder for many years. J&J claimed that the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence and it plans to appeal the verdict. The British charity, Ovacome was quoted as saying that while there were 16 studies which showed that using talc increased the risk of ovarian cancer by around a third, and a 2013 review of US studies had similar results for genital, but not general, talcum powder use they were not convinced that the results were reliable. Furthermore, they said, “Ovarian cancer is a rare disease, and increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk.”

  2. Even though Johnson & Johnson is taking the lashes, if talcum powder is associated with ovarian cancer then all brands of talcum powder may be problematic.

However for years now Johnson & Johnson has also produced a range of baby and body powders made with cornstarch, a vegetable and not with not talc, which is a mineral.

  3. The pertinent issue raised by the Ambassador and should concern all women who rub power between the legs is who is addressing the matter in Barbados? What does the NOW have to say? Which agency should women hold responsible?

  4. Modern life. Who remembers when arrowroot grown in St. Vincent was marketed in Barbados in little buff or pale yellow boxes.

Back in the day my mother put a bit of this arrowroot starch in a clean cotton cloth and dusted the baby’s diaper area with this.

The baby is near 60 and in very good health.

We were too poor to afford the fancy branded American products.

  7. Archaeological studies in the Americas show evidence of arrowroot cultivation as early as 7,000 years ago. The name may come from aru-aru (meal of meals) in the language of the Caribbean Arawak people, for whom the plant was a staple. Saint Vincent has a long history of arrowroot production. The industry started as the food and medicine of the Carib and Garifuna peoples, and developed to the status of a major export of St. Vincent during the period 1900 to 1965.

I don’t know how to tell you this, but women don’t put the powder on their legs.

“It has been suggested that talcum powder might cause cancer in the ovaries if the powder particles (applied to the genital area or on sanitary napkins, diaphragms, or condoms) were to travel through the vagina, uterus, and fallopian tubes to the ovary.”

“Forty-five years ago, British researchers analyzed 13 ovarian tumors and found talc particles “deeply embedded” in 10. The study, published in 1971, was the first to raise the possibility that talcum powder could pose a risk. In 1982 a study in the journal Cancer by Daniel Cramer, an epidemiologist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, showed the first statistical link between genital talc use and ovarian cancer. “

Like I said to FREEDOM Crier on another blog I do not know about the substantive article nor its mechanics but what I do know is that BNSI has been an organisation that for the most part is an army of occupation

They have never initiated any national recall of any product I have ever heard of.

And while that may not be their mandate in its entirety it would at least help to know that they were looking out for bajan interests

Without knowledge of the medical facts supporting this case, I do find the decision of this case surprising. I am therefore very interested in reading informed opinion on the use of talcum powder and its effects on human health.

ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT JOHNSON AND JOHNSON PACKAGES sanitary napkins, diaphragms, or condoms IN TALCUM POWDER? OR DID SILLY WOMEN APPLY THE TALC THEMSELVES? CAUSE THAT IS DUMB!

THE SAME CAN BE SAID OF ITS ANALOGOUS ORGAN- THE TESTIS

Women can decide if using this product is an acceptable risk.

Those with Ovarian cancer can join a class action suit if they can.

  20. @ David of BU, you and your bajans may be inspired by this woman, although my experiences weren’t of the UK, I saw too many black west indians women who were accepting of the racial prejudices so long as they accomplished. Even now she’s glossing over the shit her sisters and brothers went through, talking shit about, ” glad days and bad days.” I’m sure those thousands who did just as well as she did, but railed against the racist shit meted out weren’t rewarded with promotions. I saw many west Indian women undermining the black struggle with their kiss ass and brown nosing island mentality.

Yes we can take away many things from the interview one of which can be minorities entering at the ground floor into a shitty system and achieving some level of success. Are you able to say the system today is as it was in the 50s and 60s?

  22. No David, the system has not changed since the times you mentioned. It has become more covertly and sophisticated.

  25. @Georgie Porgie July 15, 2018 7:34 AM “ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT JOHNSON AND JOHNSON PACKAGES sanitary napkins, diaphragms, or condoms IN TALCUM POWDER?

No. I am suggesting no such thing.

@Georgie Porgie July 15, 2018 7:34 AM “OR DID SILLY WOMEN APPLY THE TALC THEMSELVES? CAUSE THAT IS DUMB!”

No. I am suggesting no such thing. But if the powder was marketed as a product safe to use on the diaper area of babies, it is not so strange that women would assume it is safe to use in their panty area, since the diaper area and the panty area are essentially the same.

  26. Do you know how many generations of well off Bajan mummies dusted the diaper area of their little boys with talc? Do we know, have we even looked to see whether dusting talc in the diaper area of baby boys is associated with prostate cancer in older men?

Do we know if there class, gender or geographical difference for the use of talcum powders? Do people in the tropics use these things more because in the tropics people sweat more and talc is useful for absorbing moisture. Do women use talcum powders more because women are under greater social pressure to smell “nice”?

On behalf of the Future Centre Trust and Barbados concerns was expressed about RoundUp and Gramoxone and we were ignored by Ministry Of Health, Ministers, BNSI and could not even get a response from the Pesticide Control Board.

I am no scientist nor expert but the cancer rates per capita in Barbados are too high and factors other than our small genetic pool must be triggers.

What are the triggers be they environmental or imported that’s fuelling this cancer epidemic?

Diesel is cheaper and what`s our air quality in highly trafficked areas during peak times?

Who uses acid upwind of the Martindales and Belmont Road area as very often Sulphuric Acid is present in the air?

Cabinet decided not to publish water quality as its a national secret so we will never be Blue Flag Certified. Open Government is an elusive concept in Barbados.

  28. Thanks Kammie, you should email/Whatsapp David Ellis the question for later.

  29. Too many lazy technocrats in government. I think that some positions in government should be on contracts basis starting with the Permanent Secretaries.

  30. @Bu David, I expressed concern about the role of BNSI and it seems they are clueless and limited in their scope. Do you we do not even have a simple protocol on the handling of bottle water? How often do we see trucks transporting bottle water on open trucks exposed to sunlight within flimsy bottles despite the warning on exposure to sunlight #BisphenolA. Many in ignorance accept hot food in styrofoam containers #Styrene

I always try to be objective in my views. However, I must say studies are conflicting on Bisphenol A and Styrene thus its better to err on caution as we all have different genetic resistance.

  31. Roundup products are registered in 130 countries and approved for use on more than 100 crops, and glyphosate has been found in food, a variety of water sources, and the urine of agricultural workers and others. A number of countries have policies banning or restricting the sale and use of glyphosate.

  32. i don’t use glycophosphate myself because I work a small plot and I have the time and energy to use hand tools to remove weeds. But for commercial farmers what would you suggest as a replacement for glycophosphates?

Right here in his back yard there is the sewer plant killing the swamp with the release of raw sewage by govt in that enviroment
Also place for natural habitat to live in peace and nah word coming out of his mouth about that disgusting action
    #:#::::::##
    Hypocrite

  34. On the election platform we heard what Dr. Estwick suggested be done with the sewage. Since that is not a viable option, what do you suggest Mariposa?

  35. Too late to ask for suggestions the damage has been done it is only a matter of time before mother nature takes control and the plant has to be closed
Then and only then would govt find sustainable solutions that favour the enviroment and a solution for sewage
By then the WTE plant would become a more viable option as much of the crap people throw into sewer lines would then be going to the WTE plant which would mean reducing volume and unnecesary wastage to the sewer plant
But that might happen in another thirty years because bajans fear of change is real

If per say the powder is put on the private parts and mixes with the natural secretion of body fluids especially in these tender parts of the body could the body not absorb the chemicals resulting in the cancer over a period of time?
