Nelson statue defaced on the eve of Independence Day.
The person left a message.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I wish to remind Barbadians that it is not only the usual Afrocentric activists such as Trevor Marshall, Anthony “Mighty Gabby” Carter, Sir Hilary Beckles and David Comissiong who have been persistently calling for the removal of the Lord Nelson statue from its central and prestigious location in our capital city of Bridgetown.

In the year 1999 the then Barbados Government established a governmental “National Heroes Square and Gallery Development Committee” to consider and decide upon this issue of the correct location of the Nelson statue (among other issues).

I was a member of that National Committee.

The Committee held three Town Hall meeting on the issue and also solicited and received scores of written submissions from the people of Barbados.

In May 2000 the Committee issued its Report and recommended the REMOVAL and RELOCATION of the Nelson statue to one of two possible alternative locations.

The Committee also recommended that the statue be immediately taken down and kept in storage pending its relocation, lest it provoke “public controversy.” (See page 15 of the Report)

Membership of the Committee consisted of several very eminent and qualified Barbadians.

Sadly and regrettably the Recommendation of the Committee on the Nelson Statue has never been implemented.

I say that it is never too late to do the right thing, and hereby Call upon the present Government to take immediate steps to implement the recommendation of this National Committee by removing the Nelson Statue from its current prominent location in the heart of our capital city.

    My reading of history suggests that the removal of the artifacts of history achieves nothing. The citizens have to look in the mirror and ask”Am I satisfied with me? Can I be a better me? What do I need to do to improve my situation?”

    It is a good thing that the procurators of Museums sequestered pre- modern documents ,tablets, and monuments. These are ample proofs that the colour of one’s skin is not a barrier to achieving great engineering and scientific heights. Out of that evil came a correction of history and misinformation.

    However, White supremacist ideology is a profound barrier to achieving our full potential as human beings in any field. It was so when the expression of White supremacist ideology was the Barbados Slave code; it is still so when the expression of White supremacist ideology is the determination to keep the icons of this ideology, the statue of Nelson is one such icon, placed exactly where the colonial plantocracy placed it.

    We, as a global civilization, have been unmaking White supremacist ideology over the past few hundred years; sometimes we make progress, at other times there are setbacks. Although the arc of progress is in our favour, its is still an arduous struggle that demands a lot of energy, even for small icons of White supremacist ideology like the statue of Nelson.

    Agree with this comment. We (Black people) can try to be as confident as we can be but the reality is that the establishment is designed to support a ucture which gives Whites an advantage. As Black people we have to continue the struggle for equality/justice.

    Some artifacts of history only belong in a museum, Only a crazy pelau would believe that signs that stated “Whites only” or “Blacks and dogs not allowed” should not be torn down. Those sign should be kept in a museum and only to serve as a reminder of where we are coming from.

    Do you think that racist messages are conveyed only by horrific signs?

    Many of the monuments in the US that are being attacked were created in the 1960s as a response to what some saw as progress by Blacks. When these racists built monuments of their racist heroes, do you think they were interested in the history of all people? Do you think they were sending a positive message to blacks? No!

    To one group they are saying saying ‘you are powerless and we will fight to keep you in that state” and to their supporters “here are our symbols of the good old days.

    Tear them down.
    Throw them into the sea.
    Remove the comfort blankets from the hands of fools.

    It is generally accepted that most Bajans are of mixed ancestry.

    Blacks are not really black and whites are not really white!!

    Since whether you are black or white is a matter of self identification, then all that an individual has to do to get an advantage is to self identify as white.

    Immediately, everybody in Barbados would then have an advantage!!!

    The solution is so simple it is funny!!

    Just self identify as white!!

    Funny thing, I had to google axiom to find out what you meant!!!

    It is that long ago!!!

    I don’t know if there was particular emphasis but I do remember doing a lot of logic and of course in digital electronics at University logic gates took up a lot of the syllabus.

    Truth tables, OR, AND, NAND and NOR operators are now all coming back to me.

    If this is what you mean, then yes, I did a lot of logic both in math and then in electronics.

    Never thought to apply it to the issue of race and wasn’t even trying to when I came up with the simple solution to most Bajans colour problem which I presented above for serious consideration!!

    It is a simple fact that has been accepted, most Bajans can claim African or European ancestry.

    …. even PLT, which he has on several occasions.

    Once we have gotten past that hurdle the rest is simplicity itself!!

    Barbados becomes 99.995 % white and suddenly the whole issue of a white minority controlling everything disappears!!

    White people then control everything because they represent the vast majority of Bajans.

    Hey presto, problem gone, now lets get to work!!

    A couple of points.

    Nelson – get rid of the silly statue. Ever heard about worshipping false gods? He was a man, no more, no less. Get rid of it from a position of prominence, send it to the museum, where such statues and busts belong as sculptures.

    Get rid of all of the statues. Send them to the museum.

    Learn to worship respect, ethical behavior, peace and love. That should take all of five hundred years.

    Secondly, as for race. Barbados is no more or less than any other country. Some animals are more equal than others.

    Look at the Trump people in US, passing tax laws to benefit the rich. Forget the poor, white or black.

    They do not give a damn about their own, white, redneck, black, whomever. It is dog eat dog.

    Barbados is just the same. A lot of smiles and no genuine love. Black, white, red.

    As the old saying goes, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    Now, putting things in a more traditional tone, look around the world, look around you.

    Everything is pointed at a resurgence of extreme capitalism and a theme of the wealth for the few.

    The USA/ north Korea thing is a smokescreen for putting the masses where they want them.

    Any country that starts a war, should be met with a ‘fight it yuhself’, by their citizens.

    I warn that they will use any excuse to remove half of their citizens from the earth, even if it means a trumped up war.

    Answer? ‘Fight It Yourself’. Do like Ali, refuse to fight. If everyone does that, they cannot do anything about it.

    You are echoing Nelson himself in his conviction that Wilberforce could “not prevail.” My predecessors include Wilberforce and he did not fail at all.

    I notice that you have not dared to dispute my assertion that the statue of Nelson was and is an expression of White supremacist ideology. It is a monument to a proud racist erected by other proud racists and defended today by the same 😉

    There are two majority blood lines in Barbados, one is European and the other African!!

    No one has so far disputed this truth!!

    The vast majority of us are of mixed descent, admittedly a postulate of the fake doctor but most of us would agree this to be true.

    If an advantage is all that is wanted AND it is obtained if you self identify as white, then almost everybody can get an advantage by truthfully self identifying as white because the majority of us are of mixed descent.

    The problem is that regardless of what you self identify as, there is no guarantee you will be happy.

    It is possible to self identify as black and be totally miserable as is evident from many contributors.

    It is really sad to read of the misery contorting these poor demented souls.

    No Christian thinking person would want to inflict this misery on his/her fellow human being.

    Self identifying as white and getting the advantage alleged to be attached is also no guarantee of happiness.

    I am sure the Bjerkham guy who killed his son may, more than likely be, with all his advantage, one of the most miserable soul in the world.

    But he does not need to be.

    What is done is done.

    So, what state of mind can a person, whether he/she self identifies as black or white, unite us all, get us back on track and make us happy?

    Happiness is a matter of choice.

    Are you skewering the blogger as being book intelligent but of limited mental dexterity or damning our school system. AGAIN. Lol.

    But I don’t recall any tutoring or curricula plans that involved logic (the axiom interpretation by blogger John) from my school days…admittedly , however I also did not do A’level maths.

    I do recall tho discussing at length truisms in other classes. I believe that’s a more practical interpretation of axioms.

I know that Bernard was trying to direct it at me, I am the onliest one who used the word somewhere in some post here, but as he was completely unable to mount any substantive critique of anything that I’ve posted it simply made me smile.     People who are conformists tend to like algorithms …and to be guided by such established rules ..which may sometimes be confused with axioms.

    For example, In Barbados, there is an axiomatic understanding that in order to ‘succeed’, one must follow the ‘rules’ and be a ‘good boy’.
    This leads hoards to join the Lodges, Churches, Political parties and Social clubs such as Rotary, Lions etc… and play the game like Enuff wants us all to do…

    This may even have seemed to to have worked for a time…. but the difference with algorithms is that they tend to be much more epistemological in nature – and MUCH more long term in impact.

    REAL success actually comes from understanding the UNDERLYING rules of the game ….the algorithms… and playing for long term results.

    So while people like Stanford and Jack Warner may SEEM to have made it…. in the long run, we all get exactly what we deserve…
    Not THAT is a spiritual axiom that always works.
