How The Hell Would Anyone Know That This Resort Is In Barbados An English Speaking Country? Since when did Barbados Relocate to China? This Sign Must Be Removed. It Is An Insult To The People of Barbados!

The following composed by Heather Cole

Anyone offended by the above title should also be deeply offended by the disturbing signage outside of Sam Lords Castle that is now being rebuilt.  This historic property has been a part of Barbados since the days of Slavery.  It comes packaged with folklore about the exploits of Samuel Lord, who has since been immortalized in song by the Merry Men regarding his exploits as a pirate, hanging lanterns on coconuts trees for ships to run aground on the reef so that he could pillage its treasure.

It is unfortunate that the property was allowed to run to ruin.  All Barbadians are happy at the prospects of it being rebuilt bringing jobs.  However, Barbadians do not speak far less read Chinese.  No one knows what the signage says.   We speak a Bajan dialect and English is our national language.  Our days of colonialism ended in 1966.  We have a flag that is blue and gold not red and white, we have a Coat of Arms on which is written in English “Pride and Industry” not Chinese Characters, we have a national anthem that is written in English.

Chinese is not the national language of Barbados.   Signage in Chinese must not be allowed on such a significantly historical property in Barbados.   If the Chinese want to build a Sam Lords Castle in Shanghai, Shandong, Guangdong, Sichuan, Henan or any of the other Chinese Provinces they would be well within their rights to put Chinese characters at the entrance but not in Long Bay, St Philip Barbados, the signage must be remove immediately.  It is an insult to all Barbadians.

One wonders if it was done in oversight by the Government or on deliberate action.  However, there is no Chinese sign on the Gymnasium.  In Barbados we have a preference for other cultures to assimilate to our culture and our language and want to keep it that way.  Mrs. Ram Mirchandani has a hotel in Barbados and there is no signage at the entrance in any of the Indian languages. The previous owners of Sam Lords Castle kept its original name and in the English language. Why can’t the Chinese?

  1. Confucius say He who pays the piper calls the tune

  2. He who pays the piper calls the tune…….that is true, also true is the fact that not many people visiting Barbados speak Chinese. The real insult Barbadians face is today’s Democratic Labour Party. Bold faced shameless bastards! Even though it spewed from the mouth nothing but excrement was delivered last Friday at George St. Trevor Marshall’s history lesson might have been of some substance, had he sought to make a comparison of TRADE COMFIRMERS and CLICO rather than focus on Grantley Adams and Ernest Motley in 2017 when the very people that are being buried beneath the weight of the NSRL are the same ones who have not seen a raise in their pay packets in almost ten years. Let the noted historian explain to us how is it that Prime Minister Brown in Antigua in response to a telephone call from his high commissioner in London, immediately called the GG and revoked the ministerial designation of Mr Michael, for an arrest even though he had not gone before a judge. Here a judge spoke….but our Michael was told ” go and get a Lawyer”. Talk bout dat in the context of transparency and accountability…..and stop talking joby Trevor. Bajans sick ah wunna.

When you sell your soul to the devil, what do you expect? Mind you, I thought that the devil would have spoken English.

  4. We are now a colony of China. Maxine McClean and her lack of thinking is to blame. If you think Europeans are racists, wait until the Chinese feel comfortable enough to flex their muscles.
What is wrong with saying that all public signs in Barbados must be in English. We have areas in London where not a single shop has an English-only sign. Who at e they appealing to?

So reactionary, just ask the Chinese, who is doing the building to translate the sign to english on the other pillar…

I myself get hell understanding the bajan dialect, because it was banned in my household growing up, I was not raised on the island, only learned to understand some aspects of it later, can get the gist, write some if it….but get hell to understand it when spoken by others, to me German is easier to understand……and guess what…..

So being narrowminded about a chinese sign will not help….

I am trying to learn chinese…it will come in handy.

Trying to speak bajan dialect but I mangle it…lol

  6. @WW&C,
Damn, your comments seem out of character, hadn’t expect this from you.
Why is everyone seems to be so ready to jump on Hal Austin? Am I see that anti Bajan abroad or anti returning national syndrome so often displayed by those at home.
Quite recently I read where this prospective candidate and an economist on the BLP ticket proposing there be a creation of a post office bank.
Hal suggested such a while back in his writings, no one went upside the head of this politician verbally with a 2×4.

  7. The signage is offensive for many reasons, topping the list- this is a building owned by Barbadians although funded by the Chinese, if there was a decision to list a message in Chinese at the entrance there is a way it could have been respectfully and tastefully managed using the discipline of good communication.

Whitehill……..it is not out of character, the only issue I have with the sign, is that it is not translated into english as well…..on the other pillar…..in my opinion, the island…as a tourist destination, needs more foreign language signage.

The hotel will more than likely have Chinese tourists, who do not speak english, they need chinese signage, it is simply a matter of being accommodating…

….in saying that, I dont see why not as time goes along, dialect cant be added as signage as well, for people/tourists who dont pick up on what is being said in dialect…..globalization.

More languages gives the citizens more powers of communication.

  9. Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger. Avatar
Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger.

Hal does not get on any forum in UK and oppose signage in other languages…he won’t dare, he should not be allowed to get away with it in Barbados either…to keep the island backward as is always his intent…

Post office banking is now happening in larger countries as it has in Europe, where Hal first learned of it…..like all trends they will try to introduce it in the Caribbean and it will be politicians who learned of it the same way as Hal did, who will attempt a trial at the government owned post office facility coordinating with banks….that is how things work.

In my opinion….from primary school level, unimportant subjects not needed for everyday living should be replaced with foreign languages, at that age children absorb languages much easier and better….continue it into secondary schools, by adding 3 more languages…drop alot of those meaningless subjects and replace them with foreign languages. …by the time college/university arrives….you have young people prepared to assimilate into any world society…, because they have language skills…..besides just a dialect and very basic english…which will enrich the island with their best resources…people skills.

Annually you will have graduates who can converse with visitors of different languages…and those are the ones who decide to stay on island and not traverse the world with language skills…..

… that does not take anything away from dialect or basic english…I tend to look at the bigger picture, keeping oneself insular keeps the society stagnated with very little to no options for future generations….making them always dependent. ..on let’s say…Chinese investment….as is now happening..

  10. These fields and hills…a little island bombarded with cultures from every where. What is Bajan?

  11. Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger. Avatar
Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger.

The island is being bombarded anyway, wuth all the insularity, it’s foreign entities and people control the black government, bith of them…..and the majority Black population has nothing to show for it..

.,,,, but as a population with several language skills…, it levels the playing field significantly, the majority will never keep on losing…or be consistently dependent and helpless.

…..as things now stand, inclusive of hills and fields….all the majority population does…is lose and are helpless.

Continued insularity will never help and will only make things worse.

  12. Here is the problem- what does the sign mean?

  13. Am I missing something here?

What is the correlation between trying to understand the “Bajan dialect” and a sign written in Chinese?

And your mentioning you “don’t see why not as time goes along, DIALECT can’t be ADDED as signage as well, for people/tourists who DON’T PICK UP on what is being SAID in DIALECT,” is UTTER NONSENSE…………

…………….especially when one takes into consideration that Barbadians speak English and ALL signs are WRITTEN in English.

In Bajan dialect, for example, some Bajans refer to “New Orleans” in the city as “de Erleans.” And I have never seen a sign with “Erleans” written on it…….. all the signs have “New Orleans.”

Unless of course you could direct me to anywhere in the island where signs are WRITTEN in “Bajan dialect.”

It stands for ‘Welcome to the Tropical Retreat of the Chinese god called Caishen’

    LOL!!

  15. I was just told that the sign says”Workers Entrance”, does this mean that there will be no English (or bajan speaking workers) working on the site?…………

Artax as usual your comments are banh on.

Lol…..now am thinking on it….are we only seeing one side if the story….or picture, the chinese writing and not the english translation…cause somebody may only be giving half the story..

They lucky Massy is not also written in Hindi…lol

Art…ya missed the point, but ya have been doing so a lot lately so it’s becoming a trend..

    Example..what’s wrong with..

The Orleans. …signage, and another saying…….”Erleans”…showing people who dont know….how bajans actually pronounce Orleans…..

Half the damn time I dont understand what is said in dialect and I was born in the Caribbean.

Ask tourists and they will tell you the challenges they get understanding dialect…..so signage in certain areas…combined with basic english….will help.

My daughter who was born on the island, raised and schooled in other countries…cannot understand the dialect…I try to translate what I can understand…

And dont talk about Jamaica and the other dialect flavored islands…I dont understand a damn word, will have to spend time there to learn all.

Ya got it now, dialect is a language all its own.

The chinese and indians can tell ya about dialects….they got about 100 or more.

  17. @Tudor

It needs to come to RH down!

Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger.

And there yall are believing ya so english.., ya have a dialect ya inherited along the way, with several different sounding languages combined over the centuries, African included, which is a language all its own.

Then ya got very basic english…..got it now.

  19. Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger. Avatar
Well Well & Consequences Observing Blogger.

So the sign is to accommodate chinese workers who speak no english…now I get the other side and the picture….the chinese can say fine, you cant accomodate our workers with a sign, it’s my money, give it back.

    As I said…too reactionary.

And that is why the island is regressing….at a very alarming rate.

  20. Artax

Hahahaha…..de highah de monky clime de moh um show um tale…………….

I hope you realise now that the resident topsy turner not only hates whites, mixed, blacks but also our very own dialect.

And from what I understood from years ago, the Chinese usually use their PRISONERS as foreign workers…eg….they dredged the Bridgetown Constitution River, which means they rotate them, you really want these people wandering around that desolate area of the island, think rationally.

  22. Vincent,
The resident liar, cut and paste artist, whoever s/he it is, is in need of psychological help. Pray for him/her/it. S/he, it, does not have a single original idea, no matter how weird, in its head.
How can you equate the recolonization of Barbados with the need to learn languages?

Vincent…ya being a fraud, with ya fake bajan dialect.., show me one comment where I used the word hate….I even promoted the dialect so tourists can understand it more via signage…

The only person you are foolingb with ya fake dialect it yaself….

…not understanding Japanese in no way translates to hating it…old fool and wannabe colonizer like yaself.

What Ha, Ha….fraud2 should do is get the UK to take down all foreign language signage….see how well that works out fpr him, in no time he will back in Barbados staring daily at the Chinese signage at Sam Lords..

Besides…… fraud1 Vincent will not tell us where he comes from there are signages in 3 different languages,……..Dutch; Papiamentu and English the official languages , as well as Spanish and the place is flooded with Chineses business and signage…cause I have been there…

Both of you are fraudulent…wanting to keep the island in the dark ages.

  25. @Vincent
From what I understand from years ago…..another lie from this inveterate liar. Chinese prisoners working in third world countries has been raised in BU on a number of occasions. It is part of the new colonialism. Have you ever seen published unemployment figures for China?
I know, because I mentioned it in relation to Grenada, both here and in speeches. Part of these infrastructural Chinese deals include allowing the workers to settle in the receiving country. Get Maxine McClean to say if the Chinese workers have a right to settle in Barbados.
The permanent secretary and senior civil servants can also blow the whistle on this betrayal of our island home by using a pseudonym.
Will the BLP/UPP/Solutions Barbados bring a halt this this scandal – given that under our constitution governments cannot hold future governments to this bogus deals.
But, then again, if you know of 20 Barbadians who studied actuarial science in foreign universities over the last seven years, and fail to name five (or one), then you will lie about anything.
Good thing s/he it is anonymous.

Ha, Ha, the idiot…..if Chinese prisoners are being used to build Sam Lord’s Castle because Barbados has no money….and the government already agreed….more the reason to control these workers…with signage they can understand…

Why dont you with ya lying, braggadocious, pretensious wannabe british self give government the money……Or…, rebuild Sam Lords castle yaself…that way you will not have to read chinese signage in Barbados…only in the UK where ya dumb tail is too helpless to do anything about it.

As a matter of fact….ya cant do anything about it in Barbados either…ya useless.

I was in Barbados in 2004 when Chinese were dredging the wharf, saw them with my own 2 eyes and was told they were prisoners and the government uses them for foreign projects….

I do not know if BU was around then or not in 2004, but I did not start posting to BU until 2012….do the math if it is not too difficult for you..

  27. @ WW&C

    Missing the point, shiite!!!

And I ask again………what is the correlation between trying to understand the “Bajan dialect” and a sign written in Chinese?

You wrote silly statements and rather than admit they are silly, you go on to “back pedal” and write more shiite…… just to CONVINCE yourself that you must ALWAYS be CORRECT and the most” brilliant blogger” on BU, while all other are always “missing the point.”

Admit you wrote shiite and is now attempting to quantify it with a shiite argument.

Definitely not a Bimmer or any connections to Bim…..I presume its master has them assigned to blogs all over the world to spread a certain amount of disinformation via the cut and paste root as you wisely spotted.

…….but the liar is on BU trying to fool us that Barbados should only have dialect….which he does a very poor job at imitating…..and very basic english….

    Ya are a fraud Vincent…

Vincent……ya got exposed, no amount of trying to dress it up will change the fact that Curaçaoans are adept at speaking at least 5 languages comfortably…..and there is signage for all….

Ya cant lie ya way out of that…or mislead the blog. ..I been there, seen it, spoke it.

My issue is with a language sign being fought, when I know bajans go to China to study, so a number of Bajans can soeak Chinese….

If they sign had read ….welcome to the Republic of Chins…chinese only….no bajans orBlacks allowed, then I will see a big problem….

Blacks/Bajand cannot go into the horrid ass cocained fuel white local or foreign owned nightclubs on the island without being assaulted physically, verbally or otherwise in their own country….and none of you say a word on this blog, especially that RAT Vincent..

……..but a sign for Chinese workers got you up in arms, which is usually temporary unless there is an arrangement to have Chinese workers at the finished hotel…..am I missing something.,

What the heck are we hearing here? Hal Austin recommending the use of monikers/pseudonyms aka the puerile masks of cowardly anonymice?

    Never in our wildest dreams!

But why would Hal want “the permanent secretary and senior civil servants” to blow the whistle? Blow the whistle to whom? Themselves?

These are the same people entrusted with the responsibilities of enforcing and maintaining good governance in keeping with the Westminster and Whitehall traditions copied from the British and not the Chinese.

What the Chinese are doing (according to you) is no different than (or should that be ‘from’?) what the British did to Australia and even earlier to Barbadoes’. It’s called ‘penal colonization’.

In any event, the Barbados today needs to widen its gene pool; too much inbreeding causing bottle genetic necks and leading to too many congenital diseases.

BTW, the word pseudonym is not an ‘English’ word; ‘unlike “nom de plume” and “sobriquet”.
