Sewage leaking into the sea on the South coast of Barbados

The revelation in recent weeks that sewage (raw) is spewing into the sea on the South coast should be of concern to all Barbadians. Along with the health concern there is the potential to dent the good reputation of Barbados as an idyllic tourist destination.  The members of the BU household are fiercely patriotic and it pains us no end to observe how our infrastructure -built on the backs of our forefathers- is crumbling with a disastrous result.

Of even greater concern is the lack of transparency shown by the government so far. Barbados is a signatory to Rio Principle 10 adopted in 1992 as a part of the Rio Declaration. A relevant  extract from the agreement states:

Environmental issues are best handled with participation of all concerned citizens, at the relevant level. At the national level, each individual shall have appropriate access to information concerning the environment that is held by public authorities, including information on hazardous materials and activities in their communities [BU’s emphasis], and the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes. States shall facilitate and encourage public awareness and participation by making information widely available. Effective access to judicial and administrative proceedings, including redress and remedy, shall be provided.

Clearly the Barbados government is in breach!

  1. For more than thirty years, academic papers and monographs have been written about the discharge of hospital and hotel wastes along the south and south-western coasts. Our lazy environmental “experts”, many of them with advanced degrees earned at public expense from prestigious North American and British universities, have never seemed to master the problems involved.

There is no excuse for the current situation, but allocating blame between the professionals and the politicians is not a straightforward matter.

Democracy is a lousy for of government.

Why doesn’t the Chief Public Health Officer publish the coliform count on waters around Barbados? This is absolutely normal in most other cities in the US/UK/Canada/Europe. Beaches get closed all the time when the count is beyond the limit established by the authorities. We have no way of knowing what the level is here…….it’s all a big secret!!!!!! This testing should be performed on a daily basis and the information made available as a matter of record for the public to feel confident that they are not swimming in waters that could be loaded with diseases.

  3. very soon after Dr. Mwansa took over at BWA the water situation has been going down hill steadily and at a brisk clip. The alleged pumps at the sewage treatment plant was long ago reported and nothing was done about it until it got overbearing to the businesses and the residents in the Worthing ares. It was sated then that that broken or malfunctioning pump was repaired(fixed) and another pump broke down. I am not impressed by that statement.

The goodly Dr. surprisingly made a statement blaming anyone for removing the manhole covers without even visiting the sites of the afluent and blaming the God-send downpour for the tissue and other gook in the important tourist belt without leaving the ivory palace in the Pine to see firsthand before making his empty speeches.

Remember the stink was well before the showers which incidentally is a God-send for the Minister of Transport who estimates that Millions will have to be spent to fix the holes especially on Oistins Hill. Did he take a look at the damaged road opposite Wanstead on University hill that was just as bad and repaired the very next day?

He indicated that he toured affected areas which happens to be on his way from his residence in St. Philip to Bridgetown with a detour through Oistins or he got his information from social media which was circulating very soon after the downpour.

Remember the saying “you can fool some of the people some of the time but certainly not all of the people all of the time”.

  4. I am not up to date, but years ago, you could visit the Bellairs Research Institute for all the coliform data you wanted.

  5. Information about the quality of the water should be made public given the current situation by the government of Barbados.

  6. So if they are in breach, what is anybody doing about it? I personally don’t see anybody taking ownership or accountability for the issue. Maybe something is happening behind the scenes, but as somebody looking in, it seems to be the proverbial ‘hot potato’. This has blown up this week with many tourists posting on Trip Advisor, not a good endorsement for Barbados. Maybe if everybody buries their head in the sand, the issue will go away!

  7. Wuh loss, more rain possible on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

By mid to late Wednesday, moisture preceeding the axis of a surface to mid level trough system now along 48W, will begin to move into the area. Model data is presently suggesting that a relatively deep pool of moisture will trail the axis of this feature, however, further analysis is indicating that this pool of moisture will predominately be over the southern islands. Given that the upper level environment is expected to become more favourable, there will be the potential for some significant convective activity to occur. Despite model guidance indicating that Barbados will remain on the northern edge of this moisture, there will still be the potential for this type of activity to also occur over the island. In addition to these, winds speeds are also expected to increase and some higher gusts near showers will also be likely. Late Thursday into Friday, a drying of the atmosphere is anticipated as a surface to mid level ridge begins to exert its dominance over the area.

  9. So long as raw sewage is pumped into the swamp the whole intention of reducing the fecal coliform levels in near shore waters is defeated.

A typical Zone 1 buffer around a pumping station gives an idea of how far bacteria can travel before its concentration will decay to safe levels.

Just take the distance from the ABC highway to the Belle pumping station as a guide for the distance away from a pumping station “development” is allowed.

You quickly realise that if a pumping station were to be put in the near shore waters the sewage plant would probably be in the Zone 1 buffer …. its a crude measure and I stand to be corrected.

The monies borrowed and paid to the contractors to build the South Coast Sewage System have thus been misspent and our leaders need to be held to account.

We all know our inglorious leaders got a cut too!!

At the moment the only way to redeem the investment is to make the sewage plant work perfectly, perhaps even consider putting a secondary system as a backup so that there is no way raw sewage gets into the swamp.

I am willing to bet there is already backup but if not then it should be provided.

No engineer is going to design a system like that without backup.

I think the long term goal should be to remove the sluice gate and let the sea and lake figure out their respective levels on their own with no man made interference.

Nobody needs to go shooting in the swamp in these days.

But that can only happen if the sewage plant never breaks down or if there is a failsafe backup to avoid dumping raw sewage into the swamp.

…. and if both do breakdown, our leaders need to be given buckets and a moses so they can transport the crap out to sea for disposal at a safe distance from shore.

  10. The MOH was fast to create an Ebola confinement building let us hope they have one for Cholera. This country is being run by a group of jackasses. Barbados is ripe for a serious epidemic. The government has run everything down to the ground. That 7 million + dollars for that piece of shit on the Garrison could have been used to rectify this problem. They are sitting on their fat arses pretending they are working for the people of Barbados. Can anyone see what improvements they have done for this island?

  11. First there was watergate, now there is sewagegate. No matter what the DEMS do or don’t do nothing will work. Isn’t it time that we get electionsgate?

  12. The lack of leadership on this matter is astounding, we have the GM of BWA intimating without proof that the issue of overflowing sewage is due to some unknown person committing an act of sabotage by removing manhole covers; the Minister is yet to be heard on the matter. Surely there are enough experts within the various Ministries to assess the situation and propose a solution which should be provided to the Minister followed by an explanation in a public forum.

This lack of transparency about an issue which affects the life blood of the island is nothing less than criminal, the Minister’s counterpart in the Ministry of Tourism should be screaming at him to get this fixed ASAP. The s..t will really hit the fan when the numbers decline after the negative stories on the various Travel sites. In another thread, I wrote that fecal coliform readings should be taken at beaches as a matter of course, I now understand that these are done but the results are a State secret.

BTW what is the ultimate destination for the “sand” that is being dredged from the Careenage? That sand will be chock full of toxins and should be discarded some place where it wouldn’t come into contact with people.

Again, I repeat…a cholera outbreak would end all the idiocy of state secrets and government cover ups and incompetence because tourism will be gone.

And if ya think that is bad, certain bacterium, when in contact with open wounds, manifest into flesh eating bacteria, in sea water or fresh water, or John Boyce’s brackish water………

………flesh eating bacteria is fatal, if the antibiotics manage to halt the rapid pace of eaten flesh, it may not be before you lose your face or all your limbs, or die…all of that is presuming QEH Hospital carries such powerful antibiotics.

……the dummies, oh I am so sorry, the best educated in parliament are playing with people’s lives, the local people might foolishly accept it but they will be severely punished by the tourists…..who do not even accept crap from their own governments in their own countries, who know much better than to pull these carelessly stupid, dangerous and deadly stunts..

People must be very careful with the sea or any type of contaminated water that comes in contact with their skins.

The government and BWA are getting exactly the type of publicity worldwide that they deserve.

I want to thank the Leader of the opposition for leaving the business of the PAC to show interest in more sewage. Who would not have believed that she helped to build it . Would you believe that she knew about the problems from the time it was built. Why would she build a primary plant when the one in Bridgetown needed help. Would you believe that it had to assist Bridgetown .Remember the Windmill in St Lucy the buses and sanitation trucks that were new to Barbados with old tyres? Every project is just a show piece built by them to embarrass the DLP. Please do not give the BLP a chance to waste the money and then blame the DLP for now having to clean up all their mess. while we are dealing with correcting the water problems that were left by them, we now have to find money to correct their mess. At the same time we have to build the west coast Sewerage plant with limited funds. Can you show me one productive project she built?

Liz Thompson Actually Denis, the planning for the South Coast Sewerage Plant was done by Brandford Taitt not Mia Mottley. Perhaps you will get an opportunity to ask him why a primary plant was built.

The answer is though, that that is what the IDB was prepared to fund. The plant does have the capacity to be stepped up to tertiary.

Perhaps the real issue is why you’ll chose to ignore her when she was cautioning that urgent attention was needed at the plant

  19. Yall behaving like every and anything in Barbados ought and must run perfect at all times. I am sure quite the government knows about the situation and is taking action to address the problem, but maybe not to yall liken. And intelligent minds ought to concluded that this sewage situation if continues will affect the image of the island and subsequently, the tourist industry, so why would a conscience government neglect such a pressing concern? I have faith in the power to be that something will be done about the sewage situation because it is within the best interest of all Barbadians to see that something is done about it because it is our beautiful island.

The lack of leadership on this matter is astounding,

There has never been any leadership of or from the DLP gov’t post-Thompson. It has been ‘every man for himself’ and ‘grab the family silver’ since his last breath.

The results are becoming more apparent every day, the breakdown of every type of social service and infrastructure.

But plenty projects with steal in them going on. Skyscrapers at the grotto, BWA skyscraper in the Pine, SSA skyscraper in Vaucluse, hotel skyscraper in UNESCO site, etc. etc.

And now we hear the Public Accounts Committee has no authority to hold anyone accountable for squandering (and teefin’) public money.

I think the time for ignoring the other party’s teefin’ has passed, Mottley will have no credibility post-2018 unless she goes after the people responsible. The old ‘they’re all the same’ mantra we hear at election time cannot be our leadership, management, transparency and accountability destiny.

  25. @ Bushie

I have heard Kellman on the radio saying the accrual system allows government to borrow money. Yet, on his FB page, about the prison, etc, he mentioned “All of these projects would not be able to service themselves and WE knew that, but WE KNEW that the Accrual system would choked them.”

Under the accrual system, revenues are recorded during the period in which they were earned and expenses when incurred.

His statements are conflicting and perhaps indicative of one who does not know how to use accounting jargon or understand the meaning of those terms, but use technical terms to sound professional.

How can they so blantantly lie when the public was complaining about raw sewage in the streets 2 weeks before any flood.

  36. This is the second time in less than a month that someone in leadership made comments of sabotage.
First it was the Combermere issue where the headmaster spoke of sabotage with manholes although during the first stink and the school was subsequently closed for investigation. Now the latest stink is manholes.

The second is the Sewage situation in Christ Church. BTW, the emission of the stink was long before the rains last week. Now yesterday, the BWA manager comes up with the theory of manholes and someone sabotaging them. Why keep blaming manholes. We need to stop the blaming game and start with simple maintenance. Why wait till the stink escalate to the extent that it is affecting home-owners, businesses, pedestrians and our guests- the tourist. What in earth name can a committee do at this moment, probably sit around a table writing notes, passing them on to someone and nothing is done.

Sometime between 2012/4 a serious backup in sewerage affected the Bridgetown area and our main Broad Street shopping area had manholes being push open by sewage even a leading jewelry store suffer actual affluent within the store.

Come on BWA, get the maintenance on these sensitive equipment fixed and running and stop playing politics laced with stupid excuses.

It seems ministries are allergic to maintenance.

When natural disasters occur (and this was due in part to a natural disaster) they can overwhelm any country but the ability to respond with alacrity is one of the hallmarks of good governance. If tourism is our number one source of income, then sewage leak (on land and on the coast) Is likely to cause serious harm to the economy. This industry is very fickle and bad press can kill the golden goose in a very short time. The road to recovery can be much longer.

The point here is, neither the local population nor the tourists who do not deserve garbage strewn, raw sewage streets and contaminated beaches have to docilely accept unapologetic behavior and lies from government officials and their lackeys…it’s a health hazard, deadly in its existence and destructive to the island’s reputation…as ya can see Trip Advisor is on the ball, the tourists did nit hesitate to report what the smelled.

Manyncountries get the occassional sewage leaks, but it’s dealt with immediately, not weeks later to accomodate a celebration ..and to prevent diseases and death…..and the governments are intelligent enough not to insult their taxpayer’s or their guests..read tourists…with lies and deception…..no one has to accept that, they do not accept in in the US, UK or Canada…and neither should bajans.

If they are allowed to get away with this, what else will the government think they can do to the people and get away.
