Pro-Shottas Soccer School proudly displays the sign on the gate of the BET Sports Club.

The battle to win the taste buds of our youth has gone into high gear. Our society has reached the point where convenience is being given priority above eating healthy by a modern day Barbadian. Bear in mind the national health budget is over 700 million and per capita ranks as the third highest in the Caribbean.

If we accept that the health of a nation is the wealth of a nation then we should be very concerned about what 2010 research has revealed about the incidence of obesity in our youth population.

  • Over 30% in the 9 to10 age group are obese/overweight
  • 12% had high blood pressure

One does not have to be a medical practitioner to know that obese individuals are vulnerable to many types of health risks e.g. hypertension and heart disease, respiratory disease and of course the big D (Diabetes). They they are the non-medical issues which have to be managed as well read low esteem, signalization etc.

Parents are responsible for the upbringing of our children. Marketeers also know that purchasing decisions of adults are influenced or in this case manipulated by targeting the message at children. The image above is one example where a popular football school in Barbados that recruits young boys and girls has been able to attract sponsorship from fast food Chefette restaurant and all that comes with it. A visit to many primary schools will also reveal the Chefette brand printed on exercise books, pencils, book covers all done with the objective to keep the Chefette brand top of the young minds.

The fast food experience has become so embedded in decision making that a trip to Chefette restaurant has become threaded in our lifestyle. In recent weeks Barbadians have witnessed ministers of government featured at ribbon cutting ceremonies at the opening of Burger King and Chefette restaurants.   What message is our leaders sending? Our leaders publicly support the littering of fast food restaurants across the landscape of Barbados and at the same time struggle with executing policy to promote behavioural change in the citizenry. The BU household is not saying that fast food restaurants are to be blamed solely for the bad food being ingested by our youth. However, the question must be asked what is being done to counter the aggressive messaging of fast food restaurants.

Burger King and Chefette fast food restaurants are headed by Bizzy Williams and the Haloute family. The influence of big business or well off individuals on government will be difficult to counter. Government is in the business of promoting economic activity. Also as political parties contributions to the campaign coffers are welcomed from individuals and businesses like Bizzy and Chefette restaurant.

Is it too late to save improve the health of our children and in the process the wealth of the nation?

  1. Alas, Mitchlans, it is not practical to grab a man by the scruff of his neck and force him to do that which is wise and prudent. We are not even allowed to do that to our children of late – least we ‘infringe their rights’ to do shiite (which can endanger their future).
Even if you could, …and forced Bajans to live healthier and longer lives, they would still be brass bowls at heart … and would probably spend those long, healthy lives kowtowing to their beloved, selfish, adopted, albino-centric ways.

    No boss.
The solution is to reverse the brass bowlery, …to bring back wisdom and common sense and let individuals apply these attributes to the benefit of all areas of their lives.

  2. Quite correct Bush Tea. However I firmly belive assistance in one form and another to find the path to wisdom and common sense will be required. And it may sometimes not be pretty!

“She took home a garbage bag full of leaves and gave me hell for not eating them. The Africans, Philippinos, Chinese in the allotment garden grow them for the leaves only. Same with beans. They eat the leaves and if some mature it is a bonus.”

    Leaves, nuts pumpkin….all very healthy.

Tumerica kills information in the body.

Many leaves build up resistance to sickness.

Lots of herbal teas, moringa, rosemary, pomegranate etc. …these things help fight infections in the body.

    Re your last comment

How come Pachamama is not seen as a ‘prophet’ when we predicted these September/October surprises in the US elections, amongst other things.

We judged then that they will work to Trump’s benefit and that elements within the security services will aid these projects.

When will Pachamama be included in your BBE, scripture

Even a prophet of doom and gloom will suffice, LOL.

  8. Well Wel:
I am sure you mean “inflammation”, not as you write: “Tumerica kills information in the body.”
Won’t comment on the disinformation you gave in your first contribution

  9. Alas Michians,
You are not aware of the culinary competitions that have been running on CBC every Sunday evening (6-7) Caribbean Cuisine; keen competitions between school children utilizing recipes using local products. You should endeavour to see them. Therefore you should not be so quick to criticize what you are ignorant of.

Stop lying Alvin…I gave no disinformation in my first post…as usual ya trying to cover up shit..it wont work.

As someone who has nerve damage because of a very old accident…I have to spend at least 2 weeks out of every month taking care of my health, I am very in tune with my body needs to stay healthy, if ya listen, the body tells ya what ya need.

You just want to see the fast food industry lead by minorities kill off ya fellow bajans…while the slaves for politicians and government ministers in parliament steal from their own people and give it all to the 5% minorities and slugs sucking the island dry.

    Yall are traitors

  12. It all comes down to time, after a hard days work it is a lot easier just to pick something up rather than go to the effort of cooking . Maybe a shorter work week makes sense

Morning guys readers, I was wondering how many vagrants who eat from garbage cans and bite of rats heads die suddenly?”

None that I know of – I saw ninja man drinking water from a gutter and he still looks in ggod condition. a study needs to be done on those vagrants exposed to the elements and who eat garbage daily to see what keeps them going.

  14. Nonsense Lawson. This fast food thing is recent. Bajans always cooked their own food. In our house who ever got home first from school started the dinner, cleaned the fish or whatever. Bajans used to get up in the morning and cook food for their husbands to carry work in a carrier, or put it on the bus if they worked in town. We used to get up in the morning and cook food, real food to eat before getting on the school bus to Bridgetown.

In those days most people did manual labor and worked HARD.

  15. “Why not impose an indirect tax on the sale of fast food the same way taxes are heavily levied on at the sale of alcohol and tobacco? Why not levy an annual charge on all fast food outlets whose turnover exceeds $400,000?”

Shite man this Government lather you ass in taxes and you begging for more. If you have an aversion to greasy foods then do not eat them but do not punish me for your licorishness or the licorishness of others. And are you including the fast food joints in Oistins and Baxters road and all those other places which serve the greasy delicacy that tourists enjoy.

  16. Alvin, I have seen the programmes of which you speak. The quality of the production and their content is beyond dismal and is clearly watched by few more than the contestants and their families, who are equally clearly not impressed enough to carry the lessons (such as they are) of their children, into their homes and communities.

CBC is a graveyard of tired outdated attempts at television with extremely rare exceptions. And with hundreds of options on cable and MCTV, few need to go through the agony of watching it. The viewing figures and consequent lack of advertising revenue tell a very sorry story. The sooner it is sold off and run as a real television station bybpeople who actually know something about the medium, the better.

  18. it seems more and more both the wife and husband work just to make a decent living. in our home we both work long hours and have no energy or inclination to make dinner. I don’t think I am alone in our lifestyle. Many houses in Barbados employ cooks ,maids ,gardeners but a lot of people cant so you may say nonsense but the fact is unless the wife is a homemaker it is difficult. Welcome to the middleclass you wanted it now you have to live with the pitfalls of a higher standard of living

Yep…they wanted middle class with all the bells a whistles, they got it.

I know how tired ya can get in big cities, particularly if you work 2 jobs and have children to raise…so every 2 days, I would cook and freeze it.

You do not know what ya getting when other people cook ya food, if they are pissed off, they would spit in it…or worse.

There used to be a TV show with hidden cameras showimg the nasty things people get up to in restaurants and the customers always got caught in the middle.

I always found time to cook thank you very much, even if I had to rest, then get up at 2 in the morning, cook and get ready to catch the 5 am train into the city….I am very thankful I did that now, doctors cannit get my money for a while.

But that is the big cities, what excuse do bajans have, the Caribbean, perpetual sunshine, tiny islands.

Come on balance, where is the right side of the scale of your argument? Now which you would prefer? A tax on lazy gluttons or a social responsibility tax on everyone? What about a combination of a 1% Social responsibility imposition along with this fat tax on the persistent lazy? You can certainly avoid the fat tax but clearly not the social responsibility levy.

Would you be so outrageously gluttonous in your stupid quest in support of fast food if additional taxes were levied on the consumption of alcohol, tobacco or even prostitution or the use of marijuana if the latter two were legal?

Why punish those for drinking and smoking while allowing the lazy gluttonous NCD ridden segments to have the latest brand-name fridges and stoves as show pieces in their kitchen?

Let them pay upfront for their public health care just like the drinkers and smokers and soon-to-be marijuana consumers.

Why not the fast food joints in Oistins and Baxters Road if the purveyors’ annual turnover exceeds the threshold which make the business a rather viable enterprise whose patrons are most able to contribute to the government’s coffers for the general good and to provide in advance for their inevitable drain on the public health care system? Isn’t a similar regime in place at it pertains to qualification for VAT registration?

  21. Mitchlans, I watch some of those programs and the guy who is supposed to be atop chef talks too much and interrupts the students to ask dumb asses questions. What I noticed is that they put sugar in everything, coleslaw, potato salad, even gravy and mashed potatoes.

  22. Well well, as a single parent who had to work, I got up every morning at 5 or 6 am and cooked my son’s food for him to take to the babysitter and when he was in school, I put said food in a wide mouth thermos for him. No hot dogs, if hamburger, I made it at home with lean beef or chicken. No kraft dinner. Vegetables, potato or rice, fish and real meat, no near meats (cold cuts). Sometimes I would give him an egg salad sandwich.

He told me kids used to tease him about bringing food to school. I told him to tell them that his Mommy loves and cares so much about him, she gets up early to cook him a proper lunch. He told them and that was the last time they queried his hot lunches.

My Chinese lady neighbour at the bus stop complained to me that her kids did not like taking hot lunches to school, because of the same thing. I told her what I told my son and she told her kids, who passed on the message and that was the last of that too. She was surprised that I also gave my son a hot lunch. She said Canadians like to give their kids too many sandwiches. People just too damn lazy and will find excuses.

  23. If you kept that thermos tight between your legs you could have got up at 8

Bajans…that’s it, laziness, they find time for other crap, but they could use that same wasted time to prepare heathy foods, less doctor visits fir them and their whole families if they do.

I have come to believe that people love misery and sickness in their lives, it gives them something to bitch and whine about, while burdening the healthcare system.

  25. Well Well I have to tell you our family tradition on every trip to the island is to pick up chefette on the way home from the airport, I crave chutneys roti with all the sauces like kfc they must put some secret ingredient in it. But all kidding aside I live on junk food you are right it is bad for me but honestly there never seems to be time and what I eat is not as important for me as it is for some but more of a thing I have to do to keep going.

  26. What are you saying Bajans?

…that it is beginning to look like a SENSIBLE arrangement to have a loving and caring mother running the home and family …while the (relatively dispensable) man is out hunting …or seeking FOREX to support that effort?
…are you suggesting that a family unit consisting of two completely different (but complimentary) male and female personalities, could actually solve basic problems related to the health, well-being, education, development and nourishment of the whole unit – and in particularly the children and future generation…?
…whereas the current shiite ‘family’ of two ‘equal’ individuals – fighting to outdo each other in salary, job status, bank account and bling has been failing on ALL these counts…?

Be careful what you say girl…. some here on BU would want to crucify your donkey if they even suspected that this is what you were saying….

Chefette, KFC, Burger King etc, are the least of our problems.

Look outside every school at the beginning and end of each day and see the utter crap being peddled, laden with

If we put aside the emotion and reflect for one moment we would remember that selling outside school gates have been a cultural pastime since we were children and is nothing new; what is new is that the preparation of the condiments used in the sale of such items like sugar cakes, black bitch, guava jelly and sometimes souse cakes might have been done in better hygienic conditions now than then. Let me make it clear I am not making a case for or against fast foods just for balance in analysis.

The Bushman..I dont think Bajans is saying that cause she is well aware for the last 50 years and even before, females cannot depend on males….not even and particularly if ya married to them. ..some females in decades gone by learned that they had 10 children with the husband and he acted like he is part of the furniture…and always found something better, in his mind, to do with his money…the mithers and grandmothers were forced to do the man’s job…support and raise his children.

Is it any wonder that in 2016, Adril Nitwit, Dimwit Jackass for an attorney general still believes that men are NOT responsible for their children, neither raising nor supporting…that it’s all the fault and responsibility of the mothers and grandmothers. ..where did yall get that idiot though….steupss.

You cannot force men to be responsible or family oriented….if they have different intents.

The retard Bush..tried that in the US, trying to get everyone married, ya can see for yourself, daily, how well that one is not working out.

Females have mothering instincts, most of them, men don’t, many do not have fathering instincts, they were not raised that way, given the track records of the males in Barbados and the Caribbean, or were not born with fathering instincts, very rare to find that connect…males and females are not equal in many ways….given the thousands of children males feel compelled to litter the islands with and then abandon and neglect the children and their mothers.

We have to live with the reality of how things are and not how we would like them to be or how they should be…if women stay home, their children starve…

….Most women are forced to juggle everything…2 jobs, 5 children, cooking, washing, attending their children’s school activites, a business..etc…they are called SUPER MOMS.

    Lawson…pick up a hobby…..cooking.

Drinking beer for 5 hours every day, is not a hobby…ya retired and have very little else to do, watching porn is not a hobby….., lol.

I understand that when traveling, even if staying in a self-contained hotel, you eat out, it’s natural…who wants to cook every day while on a 12 day vacation…bad business.

…… While in university in Canada my daughter always wanted a Chefette roti or 3 when she knew I was traveling to the island, her fiance visiting the island liked it too, but he likes anything unhealthy with the full knowledge that his health cannot handle it, of course he then has to visit these doctors after…just like you…lol

But ya really should cook your own meals as often as ya can.

  31. Your right porn is not a hobby but it is the only exercise I get. I am going to Scotland next week hopefully I can pick up some good eating habits there. I have never tried deep fried mars bars but I am sure they taste better than kale.

Why can’t it be 4 or 5 women at home? Why are you so wedded to the western conception of your ‘nuclear’ family formation? How come we can’t be like the fictional King Solomon, or the fictitious King David?

We even know of a family formation where there are 4 men going out to work, with one women at home.

These people are Tibetan and this has become their custom thanks to China’s one-child policy. Too few women.

All the men are the fathers of all the children.

  43. David, in Tibetan culture if one brother gets married and he has other brothers who are not, they all share the same wife. It is so, especially if a younger brother gets married first. Then all the older brothers gets a piece of the pie. To my knowledge, this has been on-going before the Chinese one child policy.

  44. @David Blogmaster? “Burger King and Chefette fast food restaurants are headed by Bizzy Williams and the Haloute family.”

And please note that Bizzy is a real, real bony man. I bet that he has a wife or a cook at home who prepares proper old fashioned meals for him at home.

    Sensible fella.

  45. I stopped buying sweet drinks years ago. I let the sweet drinks stay on the merchants’s shelves. I only buy small quantities of unsweetened juice.

If I don’t have a “nice” cool soft drink waiting for me in the fridge at home or at work, then when I am thirsty, I have no choice but to drink a nice cold water. i drink 3 or 4 ounces of unsweetened juice at breakfast time. After that it is water all the way.

  49. bajans September 24, 2016 at 12:08 PM #
David, in Tibetan culture if one brother gets married and he has other brothers who are not, they all share the same wife. It is so, especially if a younger brother gets married first. Then all the older brothers gets a piece of the pie. To my knowledge, this has been on-going before the Chinese one child policy.

And this is not just wuflessness. It is actually a sensible survival strategy.

The land in the Himalayan highlands somewhat barren. If one woman is married to several brothers then the family will typically have fewer children as a woman can generally only bear one child every 12 months regardless of how many times she has intercourse, and regardless of how many people she has intercourse with. So this strategy keeps the population small, keeps the land in family hands, and reduces jealousy since a man is less likely to be jealous of his own brother than of a strange man. it also ensures that the children are supported because really it does not make much difference if a man is supporting his son or his nephew, your brother’s children are almost as good and almost loved as your own.

But the primary purpose is to keep the population small enough so that the land can feed all of the people.

  50. Pachamama September 20, 2016 at 7:16 AM “Why can’t it be 4 or 5 women at home?”

Because dear Pacha. it is impossible for one man to adequately provide sexual services to 4 or 5 or 10 women in the long term.

And when this inadequacy occurs your life won’t be worth living with 4 or 5 or 10 frustrated/miserable women around.

That is why monogamy is the norm.

Wunna men can’t manage more than one…at least not in the long term (and long term means the number of years it takes to raise a child)
