A BU family member visiting from the cold North sent us a note with the following observations:

I have read about the growing problem of garbage that is a blemish on the Gem of the Caribbean, and yesterday experienced it first hand.

As is my usual custom, after clearing Immigration and Customs at GAIA following 5-6 hours on Air Canada flight 966 from, I picked up the hire car and my first stop was, as usual, at the rum shop, PUGS, at the roundabout by the SOL Gas Station by GAIA.

  • PUGS, which could use a cleaning and a paint job.
  • Pile of trash awaiting pick up at PUGS
  • Pile of trash awaiting pick up on the roadside by the crosswalk from the airport parking lot to the bus  stop.

Is that what is meant by Welcome to Barbados

I think that if I was a first time visitor and this was my first impression, or one who has no particular affection for the people on this lump of coral, I would have been inclined to return to GAIA and get on Air Canada flight 967.

Something has to be done about the trash NOW.

By the way, the sign on the tourist welcome office in the arrivals area just before leaving the building still says Barbados Tourism Authority!

  1. Off topic

In the same edition of Barbados Today Reuon Eversley has an article on homosexuality which is accompanied by a picture of “Benjy” the gay bull. Only those familiar with the Bajan dialect will get the unintended humour in that photo.

Bajans can be funny, thanks Barbados Today for starting my Friday with a laugh.

  2. Ha!Ha! sarge this barbados uh fuhget politics banana republic style govt supposed to do all the dirty work for a bunch of nose pickers and free loaders who want no part of contributing any thing worthwhile of substance to the enviroment but bitching and bellyaching. what a f..king shame.

I believe that part of the blame should be placed on the people and part on the Industry especially commercial fast food vendors . In the same edition of Barbados Today there is a voice over commercial from Chefette extolling the virtues of their product why shouldn’t the Chefettes of the local scene have wording on their containers reminding the public to dispose of these containers in a responsible manner.”

You have to admit that the Government (aka authorities under either D or B political administration) is indeed responsible for the overall protection of public health. Unless the rules and regulations are stringently enforced the situation will not improve, given the irresponsible attitudes of most Bajans and the general lackadaisical culture that has enveloped the modern materialistic throwaway society.
Just telling people not to litter is certainly not getting through to Bajans.

I have previously proposed that these fast food throw-away businesses be required to pay a levy to help defer the cost of removing the disposed food containers from the streets and landscape of Barbados. Of course the levy will be passed on to the consumers.
As an incentive some of the levy can be paid out to those enterprising persons prepared to collect the many plastic, cardboard and styro-foam containers and take them to some recycling centre.
A similar system is in place with respect to drink bottles.

  4. The buck stops with government charged with governing the country. Through good leadership from the government stakeholders must be galvanised to meet shared goals.

  5. Ha!right also good goverance requires govt seeking and implementing policies which people need to adhere to.a society of educated people should not have to be told that littering is wrong and unhealthy after having acess to free education system.at least such a simple task should have been one of the benefits derived
Most of these social problems stem from an irresponsible mentality that has convinced self that these social eyesores should be left up to others

  6. @ David the next major issue to discuss on BU could be the changes to banking at FCIB_CIBC.

  7. But you must give jack his jacket,or in this case Jackie. Through all the tons of garbage that we have to wade through to get where we are going, St Lawrence gap has been kept surprisingly clean given the mass of people who frequent this area almost 24/7. This oasis of cleanliness is due mainly ,to the always busy lady from the SSA who is assigned to service this section.
Well done lady, you have secured more credit for the SSA, than the Minister responsible. I do hope that when next the Barbados Tourism Authority,or what ever handle it goes by these days, give this lady some consideration, when handing out awards.
