Submitted by a resident of Coral Bay, Virgin Islands who wants to learn about the Barbados experience with the Six Men’s Marinia.

I am interested in any comments pertaining to the Six Men’s marina project. Now that the South has been filled, and the West has been filled they’re moving further north. I live in a quiet, almost too quiet sometimes, laid back community where most people chose to reside and build their lives around the peace the water and cool breezes offer. Much of the land is native owned and sits dormant from the days when the main town was in Coral Bay with it’s largest plantation later farm on the island. They still had some cattle when I moved here in 1991.
The family is under pressure like everyone to keep up with their taxes and yet are afraid to invest in their land with the fear of losing it all together. So they’ve allowed “progressive” minded state-siders to sweep them off their feet and leased their land long term, some of it waterfront, in hopes of procuring a future income for themselves and their families. No one can blame them, as education has not been as highly valued as it should and lack of financial skills leave them in a quandary as to what to do with inherited land.
There are numerous concerns about water flow in and out of the harbor, the affect on marine life including the seagrass beds. Boaties, i.e. live aboards will be forced into small mooring fields with limited size boats. In addition the proposed marina is at such scale there will be no room left for the nearby Moravian church to implement plans they’ve had for their property which included a marina.
We will be having a well attended public CZM meeting on the 20th of this month. Any ideas of how to reshape or better yet stop this vision of theirs will be much appreciated!
