Lately, I have found myself reflecting ever so often on recent happenings in my fair land. And, as events continue to unfold, I shake my head and smile in partial disbelief; and come up with the same thematic, satiric question: Who Would Have (Thunk) Thought?
So, here goes!
Not even the world’s most spot-on clairvoyant would have predicted that in 1993 a junior Opposition MP would have leapfrogged over his colleagues and later become PM of Barbados; and, for almost 14 years to boot?
Furthermore, who would have thought that the same person – “the BLP’s saviour”, “We Going With Owen”, “Owen Now More Than Ever”, “He’s the Best Thing Since Slice Bread” – would have unceremoniously resigned from the BLP and leave them “high and dry”?
Who would have thought that the so-called BLP ‘s modern day Moses, a man synonymous with a revitalized BLP over the last two decades, would quit the party just like that?
Who would have thought that a particular person who – although a lilliputian – walked this place like a colossus, instilled fear in the hearts of many and behaved like a megalomaniac during his tenure, would so abruptly abandon his party?
Who would have thought that a man, whose shelf-life had supposedly expired in 2008, would have rebounded and toppled a person missing-in-action, not once but twice, only to leave the BEES paralyzed and in a state of total shock.
Who would have thought that a former Big Man who wrote a note to the current Big Man asking: “please take her off my hand” would, in a strange way, eventually get his nemesis off his hands.
Who would have thought that the person who got one Asscolll to leave the DEMS and join the BEES would have walked away suddenly and left him in the lurch?
Who would have thought that the person who enticed the likes of Rudy, Kerry Lotion, Ralphie, etc. to leave the DEMS and be ‘included’ in the ranks of the BEES would turn his back on the Grand Ole Party?
Who would have thought that a particular man isn’t backing Ascoll to succeed him, but a home-town boy instead?
Who would have thought that Asscolll, aka de co-leader and Malik wid teet, would be like a loopy-dog in the BLP camp today, trying to get a footing, scrambling to find a seat to contest (and will secure none) while his latter-day mentor has taken his leave?
Who would have thought that Ascoll would be out in the cold now? If the hasty, impatient Dr. Booby had remained faithful to the DEMS, the political chameleon (more like a grasshopper) could have been PM today. Imagine that! Thank God he’s not. A scholarly, level-headed man is at the helm. The Almighty knows best, He works in mysterious ways. Amen!
Who would have thought that a certain ex PM’s several opponents would be singing his praises now, saying he saved Barbados from devaluation in the 1990s?
Who would have thought that after all the back-stabbing and the treachery, a certain ex PM would now be so at ease and very much at peace with himself, watching the persons who engineered his no-confidence motion go after each other in a most vicious way, as the BLP implodes. These days, that gentleman, a true statesman, has been relaxing enjoying a much deserved retirement and observing developments from his balcony, reading voraciously and sipping home-made mango juice? Yes-I!
Now looking back; who would have thought that a power-hungry, opinionated Richman – the then self-proclaimed, unelected, second most powerful man in Barbados – who back-raised Bree, left Sandi and the DEMS because he thought he was more important than all others around him, and joined forces with the BLP to defeat his “beloved party”, would not be around now? Wow! He has gone the way of the do-do birds. Yet, some people still act as though they make themselves.
Who would have thought that a particular Talk Show Moderator, an omniscient Walter Mitty, who left the DEMS and joined the NDP to contest a seat in St. Michael South (his little car was plastered with pics of the Richman and loud speakers that were bigger than the car) would have lost his deposit, pull up stumps and skedaddle from Barbados in a most ignominious way?
Who would have thought that a Pain in the ‘you know what’ would join forces with The Great Economist after a most cavalier and humiliating firing?
Who would have thought that one parliamentarian would call another parliamentarian from the same party a TEEF, and that he should be up at Dodds getting ………?
Who would have thought that a female (is she really a female?) would be the brains behind wiring tapping in a particular country?
Who would have thought that a party colleague would deride a particular woMAN aspirant as being”unfit for public office”? Something to do with her morals or lack thereof.
Who would have thought that a woMAN, one of the Power Puff Girls, would cause the Great Economist to resign out of frustration. Imagine that! – More like Panty Puff Girl or more appropriately the Big-Bloomer Puff Girl in this instance! Ha, Ha!
Who would have thought that a motley crew would be striving for dominance in the Grand Ole Party and to assert themselves as undisputed boss?
Who woulda a have thought that a past Minister of the Crown would publicly declare that “Bajan Men Must Learn to Take a Horn”? So Vulgar!!!
Who would have thought that a past Minister of the Crown would have advocated legalizing homosexuality in this very Christian society? Thank God, Barbadians dismissed that and the proposer outright.
Who would have thought that a “cantankerous woman”, who oversaw excavating an expansive and expensive $50 million hole in the ground at Greenland, is not here now to witness the effects of her stupidity, as we could do with that $50 million now and forgo the solid waste tax. Oh, I forgot that it was a Collective Cabinet decision, so the Big-Bloomer Puff Girl was also party to that!
Who would have thought that Barbados would be in this serious economic situation after the BLP frittered away billions?
Who could forget squandermania and cost overruns on these projects:
the famous Ackee Tree, BIDC building at Newton Roundabout, Kensington Oval, World Cup, the $30 million ship for World Cup that nobody used, the 62 Consultants in 13 years, the Concorde Hangar, George Washington House, the Vauxhall Senior Citizens Home, Kensington Lodge complex repairs, 3S and the ABC Highway expansion, the exorbitant Lady Bird and Bumble Bee low-income houses that Lizzy couldn’t get sold, the $675,000 Golden Showers, Dodds Prison that was first estimated at BDS$80 million, then BDS$100 million, then US$110 million; the GAI Airport expansion, Crab Hill Police Station, the Supreme Court Complex, Greenland – that according to the Pain was pure environmental madness, the Eagle Hall Market fiasco; and, of course, who could forget GEMS, EDU-TECH, St. Leonard’s School, the Barack building, and Ascoll’s HARDWOOD, just to name a few.
Who would have thought that a mere fraction of all the money that was squandered would do wonders for the economy now.
Who would have thought that a former Big Man would have stood up in The House and accepted full responsibility before the whole country for what took place then: “I take full responsibility for all of those things that occurred during my administration”.
Well, he was big enough to take the blame for all and sundry as well as what transpired in his government. And, you know what? We accept his apology and remorse. He finally came around to the folly of his administration’s errant ways. But, not that woMAN; she still behaves like she is like Caesar’s wife, when she isn’t.
Who would have thought that a woMAN who served in an administration that had three consecutive terms in parliament, and wanted a fourth before it was defeated, would now be advocating a limit of two consecutive terms for a party. How times have changed! She now wants to narrow the goal posts. Imagine that!
Who would have thought that a sword of Damocles would be hanging over the BLP at this moment?
Who would have thought that the BLP would be in disarray at this time?
Who would have thought that …
