Barrel trade is big business in the islands.
The Barrel trade is big business in the islands.

I have a story to tell! Here are the facts: 2 barrels were shipped from NYC to Barbados. Arrived in Barbados June 30th 2014. No document received via mail and no calls were made by the broker to inform of shipments’ arrival to Barbados. After finally getting through to the broker, we were advised that the forms were still with them and can be picked for clearance of said barrels. This is now July 10th 2014, TEN DAYS AFTER THE SHIPMENT ARRIVED ON THE ISLAND. Final day to collect barrels before flight back to NYC just 3 days after. My brother-in-law was the one who collected on our behalf and when the barrels arrive at home, there was NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE SHOWN TO EXTERIOR BUT TAPE WAS PLACED OVER COVER TO RE-SEAL WITH A NOTICE TO CHECK CONTENTS FOR DAMAGED BARREL. Finally opening the barrel at home after it was cleared with customs and this is what was discovered vs what was shipped…

1 half gallon Wesson Oil vs 5 half gallons shipped

1 bottle of Maxwell House instant coffee vs 8 to 10 bottles shipped

0 large containers of Lipton Iced Tea vs 4 large containers shipped

3 tubes of Crest toothpaste vs approximately 20 tubes shipped

0 bottles of 100% cranberry juice vs 3 lg bottles shipped

1 tin of Spam lite vs approximately 10 – 15 tins shipped

4 tins of Pink Salmon vs approximately 10 – 15 tins shipped

These are just a few of the other items that were STOLEN … the list is too long to continue. WHO IN THE *explicit* RIGHT GIVES THE STAFF AT THE BARBADOS PORT AUTHORITY PERMISSION TO STEAL THINGS THAT HAVE NO *explicit* CONCERN TO THEM.

When will this stop? I know that countless complaints were made in the past about this kind of thing, how is it that no investigations are being performed, why is it that the police aren’t doing anything to stop this.

And here is the *explicit* punch line: A KNIFE WAS FOUND IN THE BARREL WITH THE TIP OF THE BLADE BROKEN. THE KNIFE WAS NEVER INCLUDED IN THE PACKING OF THE BARREL FROM NYC TO BARBADOS.

We plan to ship two more barrels to Barbados for the month of October 2014. A detailed list will be placed on the top of the barrel, a photo will be taken to show how the top of the barrel will be packed with the letter. Both photo and a copy of the letter will be sent to Barbados before the barrel is shipped. The minute that barrel is opened and anything is missing, The Barbados Port Authority will be put on a stand still because the police will be contacted. There is too much going on for people working in other countries, trying to help others back home live an easier life for working staff who collects a salary to steal constantly like this.

  1. Isn’t the Port suppose to have tightened security? How is stuff smuggled out? Must be collusion?

  2. And it will get worst! Sorry to hear that happened to you the author.

  3. Firstly, sorry for your loss.
I have heard of many things going missing around customs. But if your goods are itemised and duty paid the direction should be more than an accusation. Therefore, it is unreasonable to wrongfully accuse Barbadian customs for stealing your valuables during inspection. You should share the responsibility for not paying attention of this inventory list in the first place of exit. Better luck next time.

  4. DE People at de Port love to t’ief yo stuff –and damage yo barrels and they play a game of talking to the supervisor–but de dam supervisor already conspiring to clear someone’s asc!
My wife got a barrel from Canada last year – dem buss up de dam barrel and spoil 3/4 of the food stuff- They just taped it up after dropping de barrel- bussing a 5gal bottle of cooking oil and there was a lot of sweet talk and no recourse. It was a total waste!

  5. Life changer the author did not accuse Customs at all. The theft could have taken place at the port of departure or the arrival port. Customs only handle the barrel when it is brought to them by the Port Authority to be inspected. Yes theft at the Bridgetown port is nothing new to Barbados.

  6. Even though the goods could have been stolen before they left USA, I believe your story. I never had anything stolen from barrels sent in from the USA to me, but I have had money stolen from a birthday and christmas postcards my mum sent back in my teenage days. It didnt use to occur when she first started but then all of a sudden, my mail received use to come to me stamped ‘damaged’, and whosoever got away with about 20USD on twice. My mom still sent postcards but minus the money, but still each and every time the mail was stamped ‘damage’ and you can tell it was opened.

Now to your issue. 1. Yes I believe you should itemized your barrels but for YOUR personal reference only. Only reveal that list and pics to the police. I went to collect some barrels very recently and government is looking for money in every way possible. The customs officer made me pay a greater amount of money than I am normally accustomed to and told me she has the right to itemize everything and make me pay duty. I told a delivery guy what happened and he told me that customs are now suppose to try to collect as mush duty as possible. So when you so boldly display the list and pictures of items within the barrels you could be putting yourself to pay even more 2. Even though the barrels can be sealed, they can also be locked. Next time place a small padlock or suitcase lock on them. Even though those locks can be broken as well, it might deter the thieves. 3. Yes I may sound silly with this one but postmen and other freight agents are being held and charged for stealing peoples cellphone and other gadgets, that has GPS tracking devices in them. Ship down an old phone that you dont want but has that capability.

  7. Even though the barrels can be sealed, they can also be locked. Next time place a small padlock or suitcase lock on them. Even though those locks can be broken as well, it might deter the thieves.
    +++++++++++
Locks are no deterrent, in fact they may act as a red flag and draw attention to your barrels indicating they may contain something useful or important. A shipper advised us against using them as they also may become dislodged during transshipment.

Also how does a phone help track contents of a barrel if someone takes out the goods and leaves the phone?

There is only one answer- the dreaded “C” word i.e. Cameras, but we know how the Union and the personnel would react.

  8. Somebody fingers light and their hands want “licking off”.I hope you get some sort of satisfaction.I hope its not from our Port because day runs till night catches it and might end up Saudi Port Authority. Then Bajans will regret “teefing” from other Bajans.

  9. Last year my friend in the US sent me a barrel .My 50th birthday was coming up and it contained some party items as well as other household things. When I received my barrel it only 3/4 full and knowing my friend I found this rather surprising. I was very disappointed when we did an inventory list together and found many of my plates, cutlery and other items missing including shirts for my husband and clothes for my daughter.
I have no idea who took them or if the items were stolen in New York, in transit or here in Barbados.
Some dishonest person or persons help themselves to items that were clearly intended for me. This was the first and hopefully the last time this happens to me.
It is so sad these things happen especially now that we have to pay for every bag on some airlines.

  10. @ Sargeant,

I was just throwing out ideas. But you are correct. Camera installation at the ports of entry are long overdue. We all saw how those airport employees in the USA were caught rummaging through peoples laugguage and stealing their items.

  11. Come on peeps, the poor Port Workers with those gargantuan houses on Shop Hill have to STOCK those houses and some unfortunate person has to PAY!
They nor the Pols give a RODENT’S RECTUM for other Bajans!

This is why I sometimes laugh when some pun here are so focused on how BAD Whitey is, as if the Darker peeps are so innocent and helpful to your life. The most likely humans to mess up a Black Bajans life ie by theft, murder, shooting, stabbing et cis another Black person. This is true in every society where one race is predominant.

Wunna really think removing Whitey will solve anything? Few Whiteys left in JA, is the average Jammie much better off as a result?

  12. In hard times the barrels provide important support to local families. If there is a threat to this qctivity it must be dealt with firmly.

  13. Don’t confuse Customs officers with port workers

  14. I have never had a problem with my personal stuff, only grouse was last year I had to pay over $400 in duties for my stuff. I spent so many hours down there,Ii pay and left.

I have relatives in the UK and each time they planned a visit, they would send down barrels which I would clear before they got here. Once the barrels arrived after they arrived…….. and boy was I so glad that they did, as we all know how these returning nationals can be. They would have never believed what I am about to relate.

They cleared the barrels themselves and on opening them, sitting on top of one of the barrels was a bunch of green bananas. Unimaginable but true! This could only have been done here as it would be difficult for a bunch of green bananas to be put in in the UK and for them not to be rotten by the time they reached here.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how do the stolen items get out of the port when there are so many checks in the port and at the gate?

  15. Customs and Port Workers are different but they work together, they have to make things happen.

I am not interested in what was stolen. That deed already done. What I am interested is to hear the fangle dangle story as how the items went missing by those in charge.

  17. Sent home a barrel years back it had yellow tape around he top when it was packed received it minus the tape contents were missing as well while going over the items I received one of the port workers asked me for a tin of coffee old him I only had two left and was not sharing at the point e told me he had to pack back my barrel for me when he moved off I saw that his pocket looked bulky do you know same coffee he ask for was missing when I got home who ever took half of my barrel it will get worst, cause nothing is being done.

  18. This is scary! If it is so easy to unseal/reseal barrels at originating port and destination port, is it possible that some enterprising individual(s) could just as easily open barrel at originating port and introduce contraband substances i.e. guns, ammunition, drugs etc., and have an accomplice remove said contraband at destination port with or without the knowledge of the authorities? Scary!

  19. @Capt Boots
You are correct Customs Officers not necessarily Port Workers!

  20. Wunna didnt know bout Port “Taxes” of the product variety?????

Dem people would a teef the Moon and carry it home by dem if they ever locate a long step ladder! lol

  21. Colonel Buggy Avatar

Is it possible also that the theft of these goods could have occured between leaving the Bridgetown Port and the arrival at the importers home?. Just Asking. After all we have had massive containers broken into between leaving the port and arrival at importers place of business.

  22. It would be very funny if like in a bank bag or fire alarm pull station they could have a purple dye go off in a top compartment of a barrel when opened incorrectly . It would be fun to see someone explain how he got covered in dye. The upside would be if it happened once the low life’s would be scared to break into another one. We don’t send money by mail anymore because it has disappeared in the past.

Some pretty wild accusations being tossed around. A lot of pilferage takes place in Ports in Miami , Trinidad and Tobago and in Puerto Rico- Ports where these ship carrying the barrels might have passed d through. Check and see where the ships bringing the barrels might have transited .Those items were probably huffed a long time before reaching Barbados. The Blog Owner can verify information and get back to the blog with his findings. .

  24. @8 Pussy
U may ave a point BUT nuffff nufff teefing going on in Bim!

  25. No stealing happens in Barbados, none!

  26. LOL We are a Christian Society and have a strict adherence to the Ten commandments especially “thou shalt not steal”. Only Borrow LOLLL

  27. Did not the woman from the Hoe and Sickle Bar in Belleplaine say that the barrell business is big business and has to be taxed accordingly.Blame Irene De Sandiford Garner for the increase in Customs Duties in the Port for the processing of barrells. These dems are so mindless. Now here is a nice example of thrift and commonsense and trust the dems to implement a higher tax on it.The mighty Errol said”The lord giveth and the lord taketh away,bless-ed is the name of the lord”.Then he went on to say Harl was singing and saying “mumbo jumbo” in the people cathedral ,an lo and behold Harl say “mene mene” and Errol was through the eddoes never to rise again. He got up,but did not rise, neither did his party of buffoons other than to tax the middle class to the kingdom come.
And so it was in those days of the corrupt and those of light fingers in the treasury, that there rose one in their midst and he said nothing, did nothing and achieved nothing, for the great man had perished and left no successor of worth. They were weighed in the balance and found wanting. And a once prosperous country, known for punching above its weight was brought to nought by wild boys and wild hoes. They cried ‘A pension, every one of the political class must serve his time and get a pension,a pension at all costs’.

We just give it a fancy name like Municipal Solid Waste tax, to keep it legal.

  29. The barrel trade is very important to many people in B’dos, I don’t know if the complaint is the norm or if many other people have similar experiences. We send the occasional barrel and I have never had an issue but I may be lucky.

Those barrels are just part of the goods sent to B’dos by expatriates, according to the World Bank remittances to Barbados in 2012 was $41 million from the USA; $23 million from the UK and $14 million from Canada, while remittances from Barbados to other countries was $25 million for the same year.

  30. Never lost one yet. Never could complain about a duty, Just put a lock on it, several wraps of tape around the cover, and general information on the packing list for shipment.

Better security by the shippers, and cameras at the ports wouldn’t hurt. I have more worries about certain items being put in my barrel during transport, than taking out.

  31. The Port need better managing this has happen to lots of individuals from the very small of things to the largest.

Sorry for what happened to your items and by now something show be done so we know when we shipped stuff to Barbados Port entry, what we send will still be there.

  32. What recourse does a barrel consignee has if they believe that their barrel have been tampered with? Can they initiate a claim? Does the Port/Customs has the avenue to raise the matter at the originating port? What purpose those Port Security serve and is it adequate.

  33. Whatever became of the decision to install cameras in the port where these items are stored and dispatched?

Right now the unions are so weak and demoralised by this government with whom they went to bed that this inept incompetent government can go ahead with the installation of these cameras and the unions would not bark!

On second thought, no the government cannot do this………..they are dead broke and the NIS fund cannot be tapped into anymore, its nipples are sore.

As a country, we are in ducks’ guts especially now we rad today’s paper that investors who were falling over themselves according to the clown from St Lucy to invest in Barbados have backed out of any investing due to our junk status!

Nice going Stinkliar, are we still going to get growth by year end?

  35. Customs officers protest cameras in Arrival Hall

    By TIM SLINGE | Sun, August 15, 2010 – 12:05 AM

THE INSTALLATION and recent operation of close circuit surveillance cameras in the Arrival Hall of the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA), seems headed for a showdown with customs officers.

According to well-informed sources, a delegation of union shop stewards is to meet with Comptroller of Customs Frank Holder on Wednesday to protest the latest development.

“The cameras are operated by the GAIA and also have audio or eaves-dropping capacity. The customs officers see this as an insult to them as a law enforcement agency to have another agency monitoring them on a 24-hour basis,” a customs source told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.

The officers charged that due to the nature of the work performed by them in the arrival area, including examining passengers’ baggage and conducting interviews, it is inappropriate to have “an external agency having access to such intimate knowledge of customs operations”.

Perhaps next time you post a barrel , you should put on the outside
“Pork- DLP ” No one will rifle it ,as they will believe that it is consigned to one of the Constituency Councils.

This is old technology. With some things, it usually can take us down here quite a while to catch up. I have seen this system being used by the Royal Military Police, way back in 1974.

There is some misgivings about using padlocks on barrels. Many of these small padlocks, are easily picked, or collective have a small range of keys. Probably worse than anyone taking anything out of one of these barrel, is the likelihood of someone putting something in. Namely narcotics ,as in the past we have seen drug pushers operating via sea and air port handlers. Its about time that these barrels and other packets are sealed with a specially recorded tape.

  44. Someone placing drugs in, might assure U of clear passage since the potential retribution from the owner could cause much more circumspection.

  45. Goods are stolen from Barrels when they transit certain countries in the Caribbean before the goods reach Barbados and also at the Port of Origin. After these goods reach Barbados, they are safely secured and are not stolen in the Bridgetown Port. I check and received this information form those who know. You can stop the witch hunt now.BARBADOS IS NOT TO BE BLAMED !

  49. There is a major difference between inkjet, laser and dye sublimation printers,
with dye-sub printers, instead of the color being transferred as an individual ‘dot’ or ‘smear’ of color on to
the paper’s surface, there is a roll of cellophane looking
sheets with dye imbedded in to it, as the print head
heats up passing over the film it causes the dyes to vaporize and permeate onto the glossy surface
of the paper before returning to solid form, this causes the ink to almost blur together
with each passing of the print head creating a more real and natural look to your photos that
are being printed. The A4 single printing was designed to
be economical and fast. Open Printers or Printers and Faxes, depending on which version of Windows you are using.
