Leader of the BLP Mia Mottley (l) Former Leader of the BLP Owen Arthur (r)
Leader of the BLP Mia Mottley (l) Former Leader of the BLP Owen Arthur (r)

At a time Barbadians are crying out for leadership the official Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has pursued a strategy to retreat into political obscurity.  In the same way many believe the government is responsible for rolling out policies that are heavily influenced by the dictates of international lending and credit rating agencies so too the behaviour of the BLP is being dictated by a high level of factionalism.

In is not uncommon for political parties while in opposition to engage in internal squabbling. Unfortunately this is an aged old process which serves as a crucible for the best of the best to emerge. Our democracy was tested in the Thompson versus Mascoll years and history seems destine to be repeated with the Mottley versus Arthur saga now playing out.

Mia Mottley has had to suffer the ignominy of being rejected by parliamentary colleagues. We all remember the so named Gang of 5 who anticipated an easy win at the polls with Thompson’s death imminent and in the Prior Park Accord recalled Arthur to keep out Mottley. What cursory study reveals is that there is an influential element in the BLP who come hell or high water will fight against Mottley becoming prime minister of Barbados.  What makes a mockery of our party system is the political gimmicks which an unsuspecting electorate must endure as narrow and selfish interest play out within political parties. The irony is that Arthur has suffered two devastating defeats and yet the message is still not clear to the Arthur faction.

Up to now Barbadians have not been given a cogent explanation by the BLP hierarchy to explain BLP Chairman George Payne at the time statement to the media, “Owen Seymour Arthur is the person we support as the leader of the opposition”, when the group replaced Mottley with Arthur. We have been given an insight in to the DLP election strategy by Reudon Eversley, one which targeted a tired Arthur smeared by allegations of corruption. It seems obvious if the BLP is to have a credible shot at recapturing the government it must settle the leadership issue sooner rather than later.

The call for Mottley to step down by political scientist Tennyson Joseph has some merit if one appreciates the role of the opposition (an opposition leader) in our system of government. What we have playing out at Roebuck Street – as it did during the Thompson versus Mascoll saga – is narrow political party chicanery trumping national interest.   There is a simmering frustration building within the citizenry at the ineffectiveness of TwiddleD and TwiddleB to wrestle so many problems confronting the nation.  The level of patronage which has characterized the reign of the BLP and DLP has no relevance in a world demanding transparency and meritocracy. If a small open economy of Barbados is to sustain itself in a global market which offers no preferential treatment, good governance and high productivity must become ingrained how we manage our affairs.

On of the big disappointments which BU admits to has been the inability of a highly educated nation to mobilize in the face of an unprecedented challenge. There has been a lack of leadership from all spheres of society and therefore no innovation, creativity or agility in thinking. The focus has been to present cold economic measures but missing up to now has been a message from our political directorate and NGO leaders which kindles confidence and hope. Without a relevant message from our leaders that resonates we are wasting time.

Our democracy will remain weak if the BLP opposition is weak. So far Arthur and those who managed in the boom years of the 90s and 20s have not addressed the criticism  from a large percentage of the electorate that sqandamania of public funds has become his legacy.

Barbados finds itself in a strange place .

  1. What ever happened with the law suits or those threatened by David Estwick and Ronald Jones?

  2. @ David
Yesterday a commenter bravely suggested that Barbados needed a ‘Dictator’. The truth is that any leader of Barbados has been a dictator. Any future leader of Barbados will be a dictator, given current systems. So Barrow, Adams, Adams, OSA, Stuart, Sandiford, Cummins, all dictators. And there were some intended dictators who never got a chance. These would include MAM, Richie Haynes, Cheltenham, The Pit Bull from St. Philip, and so on. These are all dictators. The only difference is that some failed to actually get a chance to govern the whole country.

  3. We forgot Bree St.John and David Thompson, dictators. The deeper truth is that Bajans really love their dictators. We will have it no other way. Even now people are calling on Stuart to show more strength. To talk to them more. To let them know who is in charge. So collectively we suborn a system from which demands are made for the strongest dictator. The maximum leader. Richie Haynes went to his grave feeling unfulfilled, after deploying tens of millions of his own and other people’s resources, because he could not get his hands on ‘the power’, as he would say. So the dictatorship mental complex has at least two sides to it – demand and supply

  4. @Pacha

Expecting a leader to be assertive read show leadership qualities does not equal dictator.

  5. @ David
You may split hairs as much as you want. The anatomy of dictatorship is the same everywhere. In Chile, the people were calling for more assertive government too. And we could go on. This lack of assertiveness you see, we see as openings in the system for intervention from the public, not consolidation of the power of one! That will be a very different mental construct. The power is RIGHTFULLY ours! And nobody else has a right to it.

  6. @Pacha

What are you talking about, egalatarianism or dictatorship?

You know why the Dems going to keep fumbling and fumbling and fumbling and going from mistake to mistake? They have no one with experience to communicate their message. Hartley Henry gone. Reudon done with dem too. It was Henry and Reudon who got the Dems in power in 2008. Henry was the campaign strategist. Reudon was the communications director. Before the 2008 election, the two of them wrote a column every week that turned public opinion against the BLP towards the DLP. Donville keep talking about how the party got to improve the public relations but you aint see nothing has happened. They simply aint got nobody.

It is good to see someone like Independent who can think clearly and independently.
    Mia shiite!!
Both she and Owen should go away….
    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
We have numerous party strategist on BU. Every time we have issues confronting Barbados, bronze bowls appear shifting the debate from issues at hand to the Owen/Mia dilemma. This type of behaviour is synonymous with party strategies in shifting the goal post, like criticising Bobby Clarke with his march and now Owen with the municipal tax,

We are overlooking the financing of Waste to Energy plant which is now being financed by the people of Barbados. Will we be financing the Pierhead Project? Will we be financing the Andrew’s Factory? Will we be financing Four Seasons? Will we be the sole financiers of every conceivable project by this administration? Come on BT, you criticized the Municipal Tax in an earlier article, yet you enjoy criticizing Mia and Owen which gives us a clear picture of your political preferences. This is why our country is going down hill at a fast pace. We cannot tax our country out of recession. We need to free up the flow of monies with our people in order for the Government to obtain more revenue. Tax us and many people and businesses drop out of the tax net. We need “big mouth” people with “nuff guts” to drill the amount of “-hite” that is going on in our beloved country. We need diamond bowls

  9. Many here can see who are bare shite talkers and who are doers. Bush tea belongs to the shite talkers. He is the biggest Brass bowl leading the bunch.

  10. @islandgal

If you knew Bush Tea in ‘real life’ your assessment would inaccurate.

  11. @. David
    Skippa…why you don’t leave the people though….?
…that woman armed and dangerous yuh…if she say Bushie is a shiite talker – he is a shiite talker….
..but wait though…you ain’t suppose to know that Islandgal wrong.. 🙁

    @ Tell me why
“……bowls appear shifting the debate from issues at hand to the Owen/Mia dilemma…”
    +++++++++++++++++
    …wait bozzie….you read the topic?……
This is an excellent opportunity for Mia’s apologists to come and list her record of accomplishments and to outline the qualities that make her suitable for national leadership…
Once such qualities are evident, all Bajans would call on Owen to leave her alone…

Do you think that the array of problem that you listed could be solved by the same kind of incompetence and flawed characters that created them in the first place…?

  12. Question: after what we have been through during our enslavement, we do we continue to teardown on another?

  13. Bushie. My submission is based on the shifting of the goal post. If Owen and Mia or Mia and Owen want to have a tete a tete, so be it. But why the constant discussion of two people who ain’t have nothing to do with all the imposition of these cruel taxes on the people of Barbados. The more we concentrate on Mia/Owen, the MoF pelting more taxes in our tail. I bet if we had a survey regarding these horrendous taxes, you will be surprised with the outcome.

David, I ain’t telling you how to run your BU baby, but we need to get an idea regarding other countries who would have introduced this type of tax. As a matter of fact, garbage collection has reached an all time low. It seems the more taxes collected, the poorer the service. Why are people hooked up to the Sewerage system and paying almost 25% more to the BWA and now have to pay a further % to the Municipal tax.

That cannot and will not happen again. A compromise or grand bargain will be reached thereby allowing Mia to lead them in an election they will surely win.
If this compromise is not reached and Mia decides to work against the BLP then they will lose again.

  16. This be not connected, but the other day I saw an advertisement about “elections for BARP”. Those “running for office” were the likes of Billie Miller and Da Silva. After brass bowling this country all of these years even in the golden years the “political class” is still up on us.

    I would NEVER join BARP!!

I am also seeing the same thing being played out in our credit union system. A lot of thiefing political class people are buzzing around the finances like bees: Roland Jones (Minister Of Education ) was recently elected to the Teachers Credit Union Body!!

  17. Sharks all about:
The winning or losing last time had little to do with who was running the BLP. Dennis Johnson was very very correct on Brass Tacks today. It all had to do with “campaign financing”. The DLP had the most money; the DLP won!!

  18. Sharks

I cannot help but to think that the recent failed march, which was organized in protest against the DLP government, should have given us the collective feeling of the masses. And judging from the small turnout, it does not look good for the BLP. Providing of course, if the current trend persist!

    Sharks

I am very confident that the DLP will win two more terms before the BLP regain power. And maybe I am far out there psychologically, but I am not to often wrong in my predictions.

  20. boy in the video did OSA say he did not want to lead a divided party…..or did he intend to say the party was divided….. so be it,,,,,,,with his third and counting bite at the apple,,how does he expect the voting public to believe other wise…

  21. in the above video mia speaks as one who have dismissed unfairly,,,…,how ironic that the blp are now at the forefront for calling for fair treatment of dismiss workers,,,,, but saw no reason to apply such rationality in their haste to dismiss Mia .in order to gain political mileage,,,,,..

  22. @ ac

Hit it right on the nail. Worse than that, Mia “with audacity” files motion of no confidence against Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler. Sad to say it FAILED PASSING but against her it did. Five BLP party members filed a no confidence motion against her and on 10/18/2010 successfully REVOKED her appointment as Leader of Opposition. That same day, Owen Arthur assumed position of Leader of Opposition. Sooooooooo funny!!!

  23. @ ac

Owen Arthur forwarded letter to Prime Minister Stewart, asked him to take Mottley off his hand. You know this already, Right?

  24. @Look

Like ac you are clueless about local politics. It does not escape BU what you are attemping to do.

  27. Minister Donville Inniss has been quoted in the news all day urging Barbadians to hitch their wagons to Massey and Trinidad businesses if when the opportunity presents. Is this the same Minister Inniss who stood behind the late PM Thompson who promised to extricate the B&ST deal from Trinidad? Is this the same Minister Inniss who stood behind Thompson when he stated he wanted to buyback ”BNB” shares? These politicians truly play us for fools.

  29. Well, OSA has been persecuted for $75, 000 which he NEVER spent.

But David Thompson does very very well when he pockets $3.3 million of poor Bajans money!! And Parris is hailed a ONE of the FEW friends that Fumble Stuart has.

And some body bout here had problems with me calling the situation in Barbados a Banana Republic!!

@Hamilton A Hill the cry people suffering is tired as shite because it is not true. Times are hard. But Bajans are not suffering. The problem is that they have big taste and low pockets; have a sense of entitlement that people like you encourage. They probably NEED some real suffering in order to understand how to spend scarce money. She cannot give the child tea because of the nasty ass nails and thousand dollar fake hair and a lazy ass father on the block as we speak who wont see the sense in asking people in the district if they want grass weed for a $20. But that same man, breeding yearly and taxpayers gotta pay no less than 3 grand for the ‘free” delivery of that baby. So he aint blige to work. And he got the best herb every day to smoke. Push some, rob some people, pimp out he woman, whateverr to get by. And pay not a fuck in tax. Not even cock tax. YOU pay that. And all like you crying for them. Them same people going in supermarkets and buying strawberries, Hennessey and Johnnie Walker!!! She will tell you she cant buy tea to get a hundred outa yo Hammy Hill..
It is the working middle class who saving, paying mortgages, looking to educate their children, pay for a car or keep the old jalopy pun de road who are feeling it. They do not tell a soul they suffering because they know how to cut and contrive. They could buy big drinks but dont because they know what to do with the civil servant or private sector money they getting. The taxes mekking the middle class shite. But they will pay and find a way to eat, drink and live.
This government got to give these same people hope. They are trusting because they read, used to travel and they watch pictures other than Die Hard and Best BlowJob. Right now they do not want- wait- and -see- the suffering- gine- pay- off. They want here- is -what- is -doing. Regularly.
They sure as ass do not want back the we-aint-had-time-to- diversify -the economy-but-tiefin -tiefing -lying- bluffing- cant -survive in opposition BLP.

  31. The final cost of that prison in St. Philips I believed was never announced. Owen Arthur, Mia Mottley and Dale Marshall, etc. benefited from that VECO Alaska company, VECO benefited from them too.

Owen Arthur recently in the Bahamas offered them advice on VAT and the Bahamans were not impressed. The Weblog Bahamas on 07/20/2013 reported said statement: “I must admit it galls me a bit a politician that has left his country [Barbados] and citizens with debt and taxes up the wazoo would consider giving advice that we should follow his lead”.
Please comment post master/Barbados Underground Mr. David King

  32. @ lemuel

OSA didn’t spend 2+ million dollars on that Nigerian Water Heater Project, he just gave it away. Arthur invested 2+ million dollars on that Nigerian Water Heater Project. No water heaters were ever produced and the 2+ million dollars, ALL tax payers money was just lost and or unaccounted for.

    Please comment.

    Excellent, David,
When my little girl heard this yesterday evening, she said…………..”tell me he did not just say that. Were they not the same people who cussed OSA for selling BNB shares and said Owen selling out Barbados to Trinis?” She said what hypocrites they are…………..they young ones are paying attention!

  34. The TnT lobby in Barbados pays well albeit not enough considering those who take the bait are effectively selling out their country by batting for the other team.

Can anyone who is following the debate on the merits or demerits of the Municipal tax argue that the Nation newspaper has been balanced in its presentation or does it seem that the BLP has a express line to get on the front page.
I raise these points on this blog because there is a consistent pro BLP bias to all the presentations that come from the Nation newspaper especially in its editorials and particularly from its selected columnists, all of whom I now mention who either sat in a BLP cabinet or spoke at BLP campaign meetings- Ezra Alleyne, Clyde Mascoll, Glyne Murray,Harry Russell, Tennyson Joseph and Peter Wickham(Mottley’s political advisor) to name a few.

There is a journalistic whoredom taking place at the Nation newspaper and it is scandalous how that paper is being prostituted for political reasons.

  41. Nation BLP:
Present the counter arguments here and show why the tax is good, whole some and beautiful. Without that you are only blowing hot air!!

  42. NationBLPnewspaper Avatar
    NationBLPnewspaper

The BLP writer Albert Branford who can NEVER be balanced in his consistent attempts to only tear down one political party has now cost the Nation BLP newspaper to payout some money to Finance Minister Chris Sinckler after defaming him in an article earlier this year.
They have published the apology a few weeks ago which is usually a part of the out of court settlement.
The people of Barbados would be shocked if they knew of the collusion between the Nation writers and the BLP.

    Albert is Clyde’s other mouthpiece

    Carol is Mia’s

    Glyne is Owen’s

    Peter is Mia’s

Ezra is the official party line’s

Harry and Tennyson are the general attack dogs.

If Caswell ever changes his tone and slants hi articles towards constant criticism of the BLP or praising any one in the DLP, his column will be stopped.
I know of what I speak.

  43. NationBLPnewspaper Avatar

Lemuel, You miss the point. Is the purpose of a newspaper to only present one side of the issue?

The Nation newspaper editorials constantly criticized the government for not cutting spending and then when the government started to cut its largest expenditure item – wages and salaries, you know what?
The same Nation newspaper every day put the people who were being laid off on the front page with them crying portraying the employer as heartless.
Nowhere could an editorial be found about the need to cut spending, it was now all about how the poor people with children now had no work because of the layoffs.
My point is there is a consistent trend here of a biased coverage regardless of how you feel about a particular policy.

The Nation newspaper sings the song which the BLP management wants them to sing.

  44. @NationBLP

Perhaps if the government was honest in the period leading up to the last general election it would not provoke negative commentary. Let us agree austerity measures should have been rolled out long before the last general electjon was called BUT there was an election to be won and we ALL have to pay for it.

  45. Nation BLP:
I take your point but I was only reacting to what you had written!! And I agree with you that there should be some balance. But what about balance at the Advocate and CBC!!

  46. these are the words of the BLP mouth pieces on cutting wages and salaries,,,,,,,that is why nobody is going to take the blp mouthpiece Briticism of govt policy seriously as they have proven themselves over and over again to be piss poor political pimps and yardfowl liars,,, just read the following post,,,,,,,,

Why does NationBLP think that he/she should tell the people what to write in their damn paper?….Why don’t you start one and support the DLP exclusively?

The damn Nation is there to support TRINIDAD.
….don’t you get it yet? BLP shiite……. The newspaper has been purchased from the traitors Harold Hoyte and Gollop in ORDER to promote the “one Caribbean” shiite – namely, let the Trinidadians buy up every shiite and take over the whole place.
What the hell can ANYONE find to write in the DLP’s favour anyhow….?

By constantly harping on the ‘anti DLP’ foolishness you are assisting them in hiding their TRUE agenda….
It will soon be call Massy News…. Can’t you see how EFFECTIVE they have been…?
Everything that Bajans owned is being taken from under our noses and the Nation has been telling us how wonderful the experience is and how much we should appreciate it……
The Nation is acting as Vaseline to help us to take the pain up our donkeys…..

    Don’t mention Donville Inniss……KING of Jackasses …..
He must have someone who can help him to understand what a female rabbit he sounds like …..
