Leader of the BLP Mia Mottley (l) Former Leader of the BLP Owen Arthur (r)
Leader of the BLP Mia Mottley (l) Former Leader of the BLP Owen Arthur (r)

At a time Barbadians are crying out for leadership the official Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has pursued a strategy to retreat into political obscurity.  In the same way many believe the government is responsible for rolling out policies that are heavily influenced by the dictates of international lending and credit rating agencies so too the behaviour of the BLP is being dictated by a high level of factionalism.

In is not uncommon for political parties while in opposition to engage in internal squabbling. Unfortunately this is an aged old process which serves as a crucible for the best of the best to emerge. Our democracy was tested in the Thompson versus Mascoll years and history seems destine to be repeated with the Mottley versus Arthur saga now playing out.

Mia Mottley has had to suffer the ignominy of being rejected by parliamentary colleagues. We all remember the so named Gang of 5 who anticipated an easy win at the polls with Thompson’s death imminent and in the Prior Park Accord recalled Arthur to keep out Mottley. What cursory study reveals is that there is an influential element in the BLP who come hell or high water will fight against Mottley becoming prime minister of Barbados.  What makes a mockery of our party system is the political gimmicks which an unsuspecting electorate must endure as narrow and selfish interest play out within political parties. The irony is that Arthur has suffered two devastating defeats and yet the message is still not clear to the Arthur faction.

Up to now Barbadians have not been given a cogent explanation by the BLP hierarchy to explain BLP Chairman George Payne at the time statement to the media, “Owen Seymour Arthur is the person we support as the leader of the opposition”, when the group replaced Mottley with Arthur. We have been given an insight in to the DLP election strategy by Reudon Eversley, one which targeted a tired Arthur smeared by allegations of corruption. It seems obvious if the BLP is to have a credible shot at recapturing the government it must settle the leadership issue sooner rather than later.

The call for Mottley to step down by political scientist Tennyson Joseph has some merit if one appreciates the role of the opposition (an opposition leader) in our system of government. What we have playing out at Roebuck Street – as it did during the Thompson versus Mascoll saga – is narrow political party chicanery trumping national interest.   There is a simmering frustration building within the citizenry at the ineffectiveness of TwiddleD and TwiddleB to wrestle so many problems confronting the nation.  The level of patronage which has characterized the reign of the BLP and DLP has no relevance in a world demanding transparency and meritocracy. If a small open economy of Barbados is to sustain itself in a global market which offers no preferential treatment, good governance and high productivity must become ingrained how we manage our affairs.

On of the big disappointments which BU admits to has been the inability of a highly educated nation to mobilize in the face of an unprecedented challenge. There has been a lack of leadership from all spheres of society and therefore no innovation, creativity or agility in thinking. The focus has been to present cold economic measures but missing up to now has been a message from our political directorate and NGO leaders which kindles confidence and hope. Without a relevant message from our leaders that resonates we are wasting time.

Our democracy will remain weak if the BLP opposition is weak. So far Arthur and those who managed in the boom years of the 90s and 20s have not addressed the criticism  from a large percentage of the electorate that sqandamania of public funds has become his legacy.

Barbados finds itself in a strange place .

This is indeed good news. In war, it is always better to have one’s enemies destroy themselves. And both the DLP and BLP are sworn enemies of the people of Barbados.

Now, the void created by the internecine warfare amongst the political elites can be filled by radical civic action. Their leaders have openly admitted that the system is unworkable. That they have no answers for us. In affect, they are calling on us to replace them. And we must. All of them across the board/s.

If the legacy of the Owen Arthur administration is the squandering of public funds, then it has been endorsed by the present administration who initially won office on a platform of transparency, and is yet to expose the evidence of malfeasance . While the middle class struggles to survive lest it becomes a part of the low class, the high class continues to call and dictate the shots to the POLITICAL CLASS….that we put there, that sticks together. The honorable Freundel Jerome Stuart told us so.

  5. the dark shadows that dwelll behind the windows of the BLP with an increasing and vocal force to destroyed the blp party..are doing themselves a disservice …most barbadians would never allow such a force to ever again hold reign in barbados and for such a cause throwing out MIA for OSA might be the eventful fall of the BLP….right now those who are watching this wrangling..see more than a OSA vs Mia fight,,,but an intolerant and powerful force who are adamant that the way for total control of Barbados is through one OSA,,,,but let them be warned that among the few who are watching and understand the tangible and intangible movements of this political force and what they want to accomplish,,,,,, that such control would never happen……………WARNING

  6. ac,
You could really hush, you have no credibility to utter a word in this matter. You don not want me to remind you of the YEARS of infighting that brought down Sandi, the anniversary just past nor the YEARS of in fighting with your dead king, Stuart and Mascoll.

I admit that I am very frustrated at these public mutterings of friction in the BLP and I am concerned. I believe in my heart that there are people who benefited from being Arthur’s close associates who want him back in the leadership for their own personal gain when this government falls and I know it will. It cannot go on like this for much longer.

I note what Albert Brandford wrote today………”While in a previous incarnation, the BLP Opposition was able to accept the voluntary resignation of its then leader Henry Forde and coalesce around Owen Arthur………………” My point is Henry Forde walked away and kept his silence. He was not in the background sniping at everything OSA did. This is the problem I have with OSA even though I still rate him very highly. Instead of helping Mia, he is pulling her down and the party. Who benefits from this? Who has the party’s interest at heart? Under OSA reign, he tolerated NO descent, everyone had to tow the line or be fired. One wonders why he is behaving the way he is, he has lost a lot of support by his constant attacks on Mia.

But is this not what the dead king did to Dr Clyde Mascoll? Politics as usual. I am convinced that the BLP will survive this.

If Mia talks, rub shoulders or hold people’s assemblies, she is power hungry, when she keeps quiet, she aint doing nothing. What is she to do? I am sure Mia would have like to lead marches but the people got frightened when Jones talked about cracking heads and police would have to shoot people and then after George Bell’s speech, they said they were looking at what he said as treasonous.

I agree with Mia better not to march than to try it with only a few people. Then her adversaries would then have to reason to laugh at her.

  7. @Prodigal Son

Good comment, all it takes is for Arthur to give a clear nod to Mia and tell Payne, Kerri and Co to back off.

  8. Prodigal Son, you could zip your lips, you have a short memory and should cease and desist from demeaning AC for expressing her mind. Do you remember when Dr. Don Blackman exposed the inner workings of the BLP? Come on now, he who is without SIN cast the first ROCKSTONE….

  9. @ David
We think yuh wrong. MAM is damaged goods now so no amount of sequestration of the pretenders by OSA or anybody else can restore her credibility. And the DLP too is failing every day, more and more. Even if MAM could be rehabilitated it will not be helpful to Bim.

But our present PM fits that bill. He is so far out front, blocked off and not looking back, that his minions at the rear, believe that they are the real leaders and are therefore doing as they like with impunity.
We have not one , but about 15 Dictators. Seig Heil!!

  11. It serves to remind everyone the number of votes which separated the two parties last general election.  Maybe some now understand what PW meant when he stated this DLP is the weakest of all our governments. There is a very large number of Barbadians who voted for the BLP. The DLP has not dealt with this reality yet.

  12. Prodigal your analysis of the MIA OSA is poor,, one important piece of the puzzle is missing ..that is the political and powerful element that is being engaged and which OSA and his henchman can not divorce themselves,,,as those two are the major components of turning the wheel…..furthermore the past political infighting’s pales insignificantly to the dynamics and the undercurrents as to what is now happening inside the blp party,,,,,too much money and power at stake,,,u need to ask yuhself if OSA is an intelligent man why would he by his own actions try to hurt or damage his party,,,,,,,,,it just does not make sense

  13. Prodigal Son

I am sure you have heard it said here time and time again that: Arthur is much too old and this mere fact has in all intents and purposes, contributed to what some are calling his cognitive- declined. So your best bit I would assume, is that you put your hopes, dreams and aspirations, on a more worthy candidate. lol

  14. Moody’s knocking down Barbados THREE NOTCHES does not help it. The BLP didn’t help during their fourteen year reign and certainly not helping it now.

  15. any political damaged done to MIA was not by her own making…but an intentional political ploy which would make it seem to the public that her chances of wining was unlikely and in a broader sense would arouse the consciousnesses of the people giving a favorable approval rating to OSA,,,,in order for such a rating to be achieved there had to be a window of opportunity ,,,, one which has apparently been now opened … now riding off the back of the failed march,,,,a march which was once called for by MIA,,,

  16. @Pacha

Agree with your position somewhat. There is hope new blood will surface, if not, it is musical chairs we continue to play.

Pachamama is on point .Though some may choose not to accept it as fact, the rift within runs way deeper than it did initially. When we witness the collapse of this circus clown administration that noise will be minimal in comparison to the rumblings coming from deep within the bowels of the corrupted Barbados Labour Party. All who truly love this country should be receptive, for Barbados will be better served through its demise.

  18. David wrote, “At a time Barbadians are crying out for leadership the official Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has pursued a strategy to retreat into political obscurity.”

Yes David. It is a POLITICAL STRATEGY.

The BLP is just staying “out of sight” waitng to swoop in and RESCUE Barbados.

  19. david no matter how many numbers you put up there ,,the reality is that OSA is still not the PM…..and that is the long and short of the story,,,,,and for those who want to have their power restored he is the only one they trust to do it,,,,until that is achieved ,,there would be no rest within the BLP party….let the games begin..DLP 1 ..BLP …..still trying to get their act together after 6 years,,,,

  20. Hamilton Hill

Can we really make a sustainable case which points to the fact that the current government, has derailed the progress made by the BLP, during it fourteen year tenure? As George W. Bush has done after the Clinton tenure….!

  21. Surely all must agree that ignorance knows no bounds.

  22. @Hants

Retreating is not a strategy which one of the BLP factions agree,

  23. Hamilton Hill

It is an obvious short- sightedness on the part of those persons who blames the members of both parties for conduct unbecoming, when in essence, there is an obvious need to implement the appropriate checks and balances which would war against the self- interest that is so prevalent in the halls of parliament these days.

  24. David, you and your alter-ego obviously agree that one should never underestimate the power of stupidity?

  25. “Our democracy will remain weak if the BLP opposition is weak” – David of BU fame in the above lead article.

The above quote is absolute rubbish!!

Barbados is not a democracy!! NOT EVER!!

This is the sometimes dangerous comment that many serious readers in political analysis allow people like David to get away with.

Barbados IS NOT a democracy. Barbados is an oligarchy which sees a few thousands of people in different segments of the political market govern or rule over the many thousands of people in those same segments.

Too, a proper survey of local political market and certain many activities taking place in it, would show that it is clear that there are many social political forces and trends that are continuing to rightly help destroy the intellectually and politically bankrupt discredited backward BLP and DLP in this country.

This survey will show too that these forces and trends are altogether themselves far STRONGER (politically, organizationally, etc) than the same wicked corrupt DLP/BLP are, and that on those bases and those bases alone – if we may write so – the local political market remains FAIRLY STRONG – and NOT WEAK – in dealing with various demands and supports/inputs and outputs in systematically dislodging the DLP/BLP from the mainstream of politics in this country.

Too, this survey will show that the BLP is not the ONLY “opposition”. Rather there is no such thing as the BLP opposition, when there is clearly the case that there are so many many people in this country performing so many roles and functions that are at the same time – or at different times – not only in agreement but that are also in contradiction or opposition or neutrality to one another over various issues matters ideas, and that are so as well in these roles and functions’ inputs and outputs, et al.

The fact is that there is really no monolithic no uniformity no homogeneity called the opposition. What rubbish!!

So what biased infantile foolishness about “democracy in Barbados remaining weak if the BLP is weak”.

The media in America, especially the investigative aspect of the media, plays a pivot as well as an integral role in bring to the public awareness the wrong doings of those persons who occupies high office. BU, is making a focused effort but cannot be regarded as an effective tool for the masses to air their grievances against government.

  28. Both parties lack public relations specialists.

When Owen spoke against Mia with reference to the IMF strategies the DLP had implemented, Mia had every right to have replied in the public and let it be known that Owen spoke as former PM his views a valid and her initial statements were based on the info she had in hand having been unable to consult with Owen.

Damage control for her image was badly lacking and she went down the ladder of leadership by command 4 steps.

It was at that point that Owen was being given respect as leader without compromise. People wanted to hear from him and not the Leader of the Opposition.

  29. BU can play an important role in change,,,,,however bU must first be able to mastered the art of balance and not be caught up in the ongoing outflow of yarfowlism…as many of the articles that are published prone to do,,even in this article i sense an approach by BU to bend over backwards not to mash the BLP yardfowls toes by gingerly tiptoeing around probable reasons and entertaing and injecting the past infighting of the DLP……. i believe that latter would have presented itself as both sides battle it out in their efforts to defend,,,,,,without any necessary intervention from BU in the article,,,,,

David Thompson is without a doubt the worse Prime Minister Barbados has ever had, although some might say that the current PM runs a close second.

Of late as if it is a sort of chant I note that two BU-ians of prolific postings have taken to decrying the BU site saying how terrible the site is, how it suppresses the people, how it should do this and that, it is not “reaching the people” and a who set uh gobbledeegook.

“One, sometimes referred to as unity, is the integer before two and after zero. One is the first non-zero number in the natural numbers as well as the first odd number in the natural numbers.”

Now I want the two of you to stay with me on this ride of reason which a few are quick to point out is somewhat lacking for the two of you but tarry a while.

Just focus on the part that says .. is the integer after zero and before 2.. then cast your eyes across the landscape of Bulbados’ media the Nation (where I am begging for a job) the Advocate, the other blog that critiques the writers on this blog etc, etc and tell me if there is “anyone else” in the local constellation.

Now, and I know that this is going to take a little while to soak in for you, tell me where across all of Bulbados, there is one corner where men and women, and both, and transgenders, and transvestites and wickers and I gine bite it out fuh you, can come and talk so freely about things that they know nothing about?

Where can wise men and women come and say that the municipal tax that Sinckliar imposing on the people is not only onerous but ingrunt for if a man cant pay he mortgage nor sen school he chilren whey de badword he gine get de badword, badword, numerous invectives and jawbreaking words that would get me ban for life from BU, is that person gine get said tax? Point me in the direction of one initiative, just one Dompey that this government has taken in their quest to get us back on tract where the burden has not been shouldered primarily by those who could least afford to carry the weight. Dompey long before the election anyone with half a brain knew full well that redundancy was on the cards, so lets forgive the election ploy that not a single soul would go home. Time was bought in lets say 2010,11, 12 and 13. How in hell do you send home those at the very bottom of the totem pole without putting in place some facility to ensure that the monies owed to them are paid promptly? Dompey have you ever had occasion to tell your child “son ya gine had ta settle fah just dis cup of hot tea?” That happens Dompey, There are people still employed in Barbados who are about to suffer the loss of electricity all because they have not been paid in months, hence light bills have gone unpaid. Might I remind you Dompey that the fat cat against whom we all kicked hell in the Arthur years was still connected to the ministry of agriculture reaping sweets while poor people suck salt? If these are such austere times why have the delegations that continue to fly hither, thither and yon not been trimmed in size, especially when we are yet to realize any significant benefit from their extensive travels? Then to add insult to injury, or insensitivity to misery your PM feels the need to tell us that his standard of living has changed too. If it were up to me so would his residence. Somewhere in St Phillip. Dompey ah begging ya! Please stop writing so much shite. Some things are just indefensible.

Roy Morris editor at the Nation newspaper recently said in a column that the Nation newspaper was trying to give different perspectives on economic issues and that is why they put Pat Hoyos and Clyde Mascoll columns out – to give an alternative to the central bank.

Will Mr. Morris then explain – which columnist does the Nation newspaper use to give a different perspective to the anti DLP columns of Harry Russell, Peter Wickham, Tennyson Joseph, Albert Brandford, Ezra Alleyne and Glyne Murray?

    Fair Question.

  49. Hamilton, if America is still experiencing economic difficulty, why would you not think that Barbados and the likes, who depends on the America dollar, would be in a better position economically speaking?

Listen! Hamilton, I know some here dislike the idea of drawing a comparison between Barbados an America. But the reality is little in the way of progress has been achieved in terms of employment in this country. People here still cannot find full time employment that can support a family; let’s say of four. We still have a national debt that has reached and unprecedented/ astronomical level and progressively climbing. When you look around the grocery stores in this country, everything read Made in China because the nincompoop GW has sold the American future down the river to China. And lastly, there is a common practice by Corporate America to import highly skill Indian workers to replaced the American worker because its cheaper to do so. So why would anyone with a reasonable amount of common- sense expect Barbados to be in the position it is in, given the economic affairs of America?

  50. Are we reading correctly. Noel Muscle Mary Barney Lynch posits there is no infighting in the BLP. The most discredited not to mention ridiculed buffoon in the said BLP should not only be punished with laughter his travel documents should be withdrawn on account of unprecedented stupidity. You cant have that level of idiocy running around the globe with a Bim passport. What a block head.

Muscle Mary for your information the literate citizenry including the blind man on the trotting horse fully knows of the cut throat politics in the BLP. Its been public since Mia was overthrown by the Prior Park gang. The BLP disunity has only gotten worse since then. Muscle Mary not known for truthfulness or common sense insults our intelligence by denying the obvious.

The BLP is in a state of complete confusion. Who really is in charge. Is it OSA with Simmonds. Is it Prescod who wants OSA and Pain expelled. Is it Mia and her groupie St. Thomas MP. Is it Horace Bailey the taxi man. What about the deluded Hinckson he comes across as an out of control hot head. People the good folk of Bim are looking for proper representation and a way out of the economic crises. We hear when it is said the DEMS are trying but struggling. The question must be what is the alternative. It cant be a BLP fighting among themselves like wild dogs over rotten meat in an overturned garbage bin.

Muscle Mary the less you say the better no one takes you seriously not even your BLP every man jack for himself members.
