Soccer stars Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo
Soccer stars Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo

Every time world cup soccer (football) comes around a plurality of the peoples of the world recall the glorious Brazilian teams of 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s. The Brazilian teams of Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) and his band of magicians. Things are unlikely to be any different this year with the tournament being in what some consider the Holy See for soccer lovers with Pele as its eternal Pope. But this Brazilian team of 2014 is unlikely to repeat the dazzling brilliance of their forebears, even if they won the cup.To a large extent it was the Brazilians who led the transformation of soccer from a slow physical game to the faster, more technical, tactical, precise, flowing and the easier to watch marketing product it has become. This product is now more diffused and the sources of competition Pele’s Brazil had to counter are now more numerous, as the European leagues will show as they more and more rely on players from elsewhere.

The leagues now draw from a larger pool of African and Eastern European players as soccer continues to be the leading sport of the masses almost everywhere. We have seen young boys in the Ivory Coast playing barefooted in the streets and confined places. In Benin, we watched as half-naked youths with skills, courage and determination competed for time and space on over crowded and uneven fields. Some with boots, others without but where the individual is not only competing against known opponents but against his own teammates as well. This must have some implications for the wider society, no?

The winner of the World of Soccer 2014 is most likely to be a country that has won before. A country that has a large population. A country with vast resources and a soccer infrastructure of the highest order. Of the 32 team in the finals, Germany, Russia, United States, Nigeria, Argentina, France, Italy, England, Netherlands and Brazil meet most of these limited criteria. Not all of them have won previously, of course, and a few lesser countries have, but the general tendency is for the winners to come from European or South American nations suggests a number of commonalities. But countries such as Uruguay won in 1930 and Portugal finished third in 1966 largely through the efforts of the Great Eusebio Da Silva Ferreira.

This year it shall be Portugal which will present Cristiano Ronaldo as the chief rival to His Holiness Leonard Messi of Argentina in a sub-plot for the crown of Pele, The Archangel, Himself. These intrigues have never really lived up to expectation. On some occasions others have emerged. The most likely scenario however is that neither pretender will see the face of God. The game is too popular. Everybody knows the tendencies of the key players. There is not to much difference in the physicality and skills levels of a much greater number of world players. It’s now easier to mark strategic threats out of the game all together. And so on.

At the tactical level teams are more likely to sit back and defend with 9 or 10 men, hoping to score on the counter-attack, especially in the earlier rounds. The general application of these tactics is likely to lead to many boring games and a number of draws. But the main objective would be getting through to the next round, not satisfying the marketers or the viewers or spectators. This is our general forecast for World Cup of Soccer 2014. You may make your best guest as to which team will eventually win this 2014 World War of Attrition, we like to call soccer.

At a time when empires are crumbling and new pretenders are emerging the World Cup of Soccer 2014 may portend a very different New World Order. Soccer as a devise to prevent national military rivalry may indeed give a quantum leap to one of the BRICS, if Brazil wins. Or maintain the Old World Order, if a European team wins. But for the tens of millions of poor Brazilians, World Cup of Soccer 2014 is unlikely to see any substantive change in their circumstances, any time soon.

  1. When the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) suggested opening up the world cup to more African nations the representatives from The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) expressed their disgust; citing that there would be a diminution in the quality of the world cup as the proposed idea would mean that the higher calibre European football nations would have to cede two berths (seats) to two inferior footballing African nations.

Quite frankly the experiment has failed. The inferiority of African football nations in both past and present world cups could be described as an on-going embarrassment. One would hope for some form of progression, sadly all I see is regression.

Pachamama is right the standard of African football is sadly naïve. Throw into the mix child-like. How sad!

By the time you read this, it’s possible that every single person on the planet will know who Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior is.

The image above is of Neymar from five days ago.

This is Neymar from one year ago:

  3. African football suffers from the same problem as West Indies cricket, no robust domestic leagues.

  4. @David
One difference is that Nigeria, Libya et al have major OIL $$$$$$ to easily develop such a league BUT the “corrupt leaders” would prefer to SCREW OVER the peeps!
WI should be putting $$$ into Cricket having first signed all the youngsters to contracts similar to those in Soccer ie we develop but you play in IPL on loan for a FEE + to the WICB.

  5. @ David,
Your post on Neymar is quite a scoop. It seems like this young man has jettison his roots. The video below may partly explain his reasoning:

  6. They could really put Russia and South Korea in the group of death and even up things!! Both played to a one- one draw!!

Interesting link and story on Neymar, If Neymar was from the US/ Britain or our part of the world he would be in for some withering criticism but his remake would hardly cause a ripple in Brazil where their concept of race is different from us who were schooled in an English colonial world and whose social norms are heavily influenced by events in North America. When Barack Obama became a Presidential candidate in 2007/2008 Brazilians were astounded that he was considered “Black” in the American context as he would not be considered Black in Brazilian culture.

The issue of race is forever in our collective consciousness and we like to embrace people if we think that they are just like us when it relates to race (colour) and distance others who may not have the same background. When Mariah Carey became popular the buzz was “is she Black?” I think that she put the word out that she was “Venezuelan”,( her father is from Venezuela) and we have a love hate relationship with Tiger Woods whom the world sees as “Black” while he describes himself as Cablinasian ( a mixture of Caucasian/Black/American Indian and Asian) which he considers paying homage to his lineage. According to the US census because of the rising number of unions between people of different ethnicities and colour there is a growing trend for people to self describe themselves as bi-racial or some other mixture which encompasses both parents or gives equal weight to their heritage.

I have met people from European countries who in the West Indian parlance would be considered “brown skin” but they would describe themselves as Italian or Spanish etc.

The author of the piece relates to being dark skinned in an Indian family and the angst that it generated among various family members. India is a special country when it comes to complexion as the TV is inundated with commercials aimed at women encouraging them to lighten their skin, there is even a commercial for a vaginal wash which is intended to “bleach” that area of a women’s body.

In the comments section some Trinidadians are taking issue with each other as they debate the colourism in that society.

Whatever race or colour people consider themselves to be one unmistakable fact is that people with darker skins no matter where they live whether its in the US, Brazil, India or the Caribbean, they somehow end up with the shitty end of the stick.

    And that’s a fact.

Why, why, why…since all cats are grey in the dark.

  11. @”The 12 Years A Slave star admitted that when she was younger she wanted to wake up ‘just a little bit lighter’, because she was ashamed of her dark skin.”

    I’v never felt this way.

Is there something wrong with me that I’ve always liked myself?

  12. So if one bleaches ones private, especially if this done frequently dosn’t this hurt the parts, won’t it eventually dry out the parts? or cause the skin to become to become thin and sore and fragile, and not much use for anything?

Am I wrong to think that healthy robust parts produce better sex?

  13. We can’t see any glory in the centuries scored yesterday. Not when you could run rats through the stadium. Not when the reverse is true at the Marcana for world cup football. Not when the ‘brassbowls’ are still saying that a dead game will be central to the strategy of the wicb(c). Brathwaite and Bravo might as well be speaking Latin too!

  14. I am very very glad Brathwaite got his century. We need to bat like him!!!

  22. Spain 0 Chile 2 half time. Spain has to fight really hard not to be eliminated!! People have underestimated the ability of Chile to play football, especially the “ass – ists” who provide pure fun on CBC TV!! We have analysts here who only watch to or three games read some magazine and then pontificate at half time, and they always get it WRONG!!

  23. Spain has shocked everyone by not turning up!
    Chile is not easy.

  24. Spain has pedigree at this level when compared to Spain. Spain has the players, it seems this maybe about poor strategy execution.

Its about the same Spain and Spain

  26. David:
Brasil exposed Spain in the Federation Cup and the whole world noticed to note and executed Spain’s world cup demise!! But the hypocrites would never acknowledge that. And when brasil beat them they were playing at their highest level!!

  27. Cameroon out Croatia 4.

  28. Cameroon is a disgrace to Africa, so many fellas playing for big name clubs. Song gets Red Carded for stupidness and Akuu of Spurs butts his own player????
Defence was a JOKE! Aunt TEEB TEEB would a be better!

Cameroon has 5X the population of Croatia!
    Ivory coast better step up.

  29. Money:
The commentator was saying that the Cameroon team was quarreling over bonuses for wins at the world cup! But they haven’t won a game, as usual they shall be on top their game against Brasil.

The Croatia Mexico shall be interesting. The European commentators are wishing and hoping for a win for Croatia, but knowing Mexico I do not see that scenario!!

  30. @Lemmy
Mexico has been flowing with their passes so Croatia will have their hands and feet full! Should be a good game.

Why England did not fully utilise their speedy front players is beyond me. They scored on a 2 pass, very quick move BUT didnt really try that again, WHY BLOODY NOT? Speed kills the opponent in many sports Cricket, Soccer, Boxing et al! Always building slowly from the back is nonsense! Variety males sense and utilise the advanyagwe you have ie speed.

  31. WEST INDIES WIN. Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!

  32. And won big!

Sets up the Barbados Test nicely.

  33. We need a careful start like what Kraigg B attempts to provide, that is boring but so goes Test Cricket.

  34. Kraigg Brathwaite is a Test Cricket Opening batsman.

Brathwaite has ice in his veins. A remarkable ability to stay focused at age 21.

  35. 60 min into the IRAN vs Argentina game and the hunt is still on for the Messiah.

  39. Ghana was impressive and should have won going down the stretch as the German Whiteys looked real tired, while the Ghanians looked good for overtime, as all African teams should, in hot, humid conditions.

Ghana has finally represented Mother Africa with distinction!

  40. @MoneyBrain
“Ghana has finally represented Mother Africa with distinction!” I don’t think so. Ghana was the stronger team in the mid till latter part of the second-half but failed to confirm their physical superiority over a team who was visibly wilting. They had two guilt edged opportunities yet failed through players making poor and naïve decisions. The question is not whether they put on a good show for the public rather it will go down as a missed opportunity to collect three points and probable qualification for the next round. They have blown their chances!

African football will only be taken seriously when it becomes pragmatic, and ruthlessly professional. That means winning ugly at all costs. It’s time that African footballers drop their performing minstrel tag. Let’s hope that Nigeria gets a positive result from tonight’s remaining game. I will not be holding my breath!

  41. @exclaimer
Well it was an improvement after being beaten by the USA, which I would not expect. It may have been a lil hype on my part but I did say they looked stronger at the end and should have won. African teams have been way below the required standard so a lil hope is good.

  42. @ MoneyBrain,
I understand your sentiments. Ghana played extremely well. I’m just a tad fed-up that African nations continue to underwhelm me at this world cup. They appear happy to accept the crumbs from the cake when they should be looking at taking the whole cake. This, sadly, is a metaphor for black countries we lack ruthlessness in our ambitions.

I have to admit Nigeria was impressive. They should have won by more than one goal.

  43. Ronaldo just showed why he is one of the best. Brilliant cross..

  44. @Hants
The game is on tape delay in Bim so don’t give the results out but anyone with a computer knows the results.
